Young gospel artist triumphs over adversity with new single ‘The People’s Cry’ By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net
Y
OUNG gospel artist Thomas Maxwell believes in putting it all out there when it comes to his music. Being vulnerable enough to share his challenges with depression and rejection, as well as matters of the heart, he said, makes for good worship music. And being completely open and emotionally vulnerable is what he’s doing with his newest single, “The People’s Cry”. Thomas is a passionate singer who is adamant about creating worship music that is “powerful and inspiring; leading listeners to a place of worship and victory.” He recently hosted a single release concert called “Ascend: Zion is Calling You Higher” at Deliverance Tabernacle on Sealink Avenue, Summer Haven Estates. The night featured Pastor Kellen Russell, Cara T Newton, Davian Chase, Stermon Rolle, Joinae Gibson, Glory Seekers and other gospel artists. “The concert was a huge success. God did what He wanted to do. From the intercessor to the singers, the dancers and those that made prophetic declarations, and myself, who ended ushering God’s people into the prophetic. It was truly a move of God,” he said. From a young age, Thomas dedicated his life to the Lord. When he was 12 years old, he joined the praise team with a deep desire to contribute to the ministry. His inspiration came from his parents and his praise team leader, Joinae Gibson, who provided valuable guidance and mentorship. He hopes to create music that makes people feel the power of the Lord. "The People's Cry”, he said, came from a place of
brokenness and desperation; at time when Thomas struggled with insecurities. One night, he said, he found himself at a half-broken piano, pouring his heart out to God through music. “It is important for me to share it because I want the listeners to realise that God is still the saving, healing and miracle-working God we sing about,” he said. The song, he explained, strives to be a pillar of strength and a “stronghold breaker”, taking listeners on a journey of worship and spiritual warfare, and ultimately claiming victory. The single also features a special guest appearance by the Latter Glory Praise Team, adding an extra layer of spiritual depth and musical excellence to the song, he said. "The song has exceeded my expectations. It moved me to tears with its powerful words. I stand in awe of how God has transformed my life completely. When you listen to this song, expect God's power and His calling. Be ready to answer when He calls,” he said. Looking forward to the future, Thomas hinted at the possibility of revisiting “The People's Cry" with a music video. Ultimately, he hopes to leave a lasting impression on the gospel world. "Expect great things to come. Very soon, you will hear new music from me. I have always dreamed of doing a live recording and God has allowed me to record my first single,” he said. “I am ecstatic and excited about what He allows me to do next. If God is for you, who can be against you?” “The People's Cry" is now available on all major music platforms.

Bishop John Ferguson hopes to help transform this generation By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Writer acadet@tribunmedia.net HAVING years of experience working with young people, Former Assistant Commissioner of Police, Bishop John Ferguson was delighted to present a youth-centered speech at a recent Rotary Club of Nassau event. Under the theme “Transforming This Generation”, Bishop Ferguson spoke about a topic he described as vitally important. “It was (necessary) for them to hear it is because they are in position to assist in the task of pushing this generation towards excellence. The Rotary Club has a proven track record of being the catalyst for youth advancement,” he said. Bishop Ferguson commended the Rotary Club of Nassau for the great work and contribution they have made in the development and advancement of people in general throughout the Bahamas. A retired Assistant Commissioner of Police, and founder of the Big Harvest Community Sunday School that caters specifically to underprivileged children and at-risk youth in the inner city of New Providence, he is also an ordained bishop in the Church of God of Prophecy.
FORMER Assistant Commissioner of Police, Bishop John Ferguson speaks at a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Nassau.
In his speech at the Rotary Club of Nassau, Bishop Ferguson said he believes the key to a successful generational transition is to understand the previous generation. He said it is unfortunate that this generation of young people perceive the world much differently from their elders. “We are dealing with a generation that has no patience. For them, everything must happen instantly. We have to mobilise our children and young adults today to become agents of change. We have to make the development and welfare of our children and young adults a
national priority, and empower our young people to live out their purpose and potential. Empowerment can only happen when we as leaders apply this knowledge in the formulation of policies,” he said. “Public policy in this regard must focus not only on the educational aspect of development, but must simultaneously focus on the emotional, physical, social, economic and spiritual needs of this up-andcoming generation. If we make these changes now perhaps the country’s next generation will not inherit some of the
AILING POPE FRANCIS MEETS WITH EUROPEAN RABBIS AND CONDEMNS ANTISEMITISM, TERRORISM, WAR By FRANCES D'EMILIO Associated Press POPE Francis met with European rabbis on Monday and decried antisemitism, war and terrorism in a written speech he declined to read, saying he wasn't feeling well. Francis told the rabbis during the audience in the Vatican's Apostolic Palace that he was
very happy to receive them, but added: “I’m not feeling well, and so I prefer not to read the speech but give it to you, so you can take it with you." Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said the pope "has a bit of a cold and a long day of audiences.'' The 86-year-old pontiff ”preferred to greet the European rabbis individually, and
that's why he handed over his speech." Bruni said the pope’s scheduled activities would proceed, and they did. The activities included an hour-long meeting in late afternoon in a Vatican auditorium with some 7,000 children from 84 countries. Francis seemed at ease, chatting with kids and answering their prepared questions,
negative attitudes of the present generation.” He said one of the main social ills that is plaguing this generation, particularly the young men, is lack of conflict resolution skills. “The sense of reason does not appear to exist with some of them. The years after high school are the period in which many of our young men, in particular, lose their way and get into trouble. To effectively transform the generation, we cannot leave out programmes that build character. I wish to emphasise the urgency of starting the transformation of this
generation. As we examine the circumstances, let us not just stand and complain, or sit and wonder why. We need not regret the past; it is gone. We need not fear the future, because it is on the horizon and beckoning us. If we act now, we can start to shape the future of this generation,” he said. Bishop Ferguson said the inspiration behind his address on the subject came as a result of not only working with young people for many years, but particularly, those from low-income families. “Watching them either become successful in their personal and spiritual development or failing for lack of support from those who are able to help them, I am of the opinion that there is hope for this generation if genuine love is shown to them,” he said. “The feedback to the address was excellent and I feel honoured and humbled to be able to contribute in this regard. The research that I did, to me, was an obligation. As the year comes to an end, I will continue to highlight the success of our young people right into the new year and beyond.”
including about how to make peace — “extend your hand” — and about war — “war is always cruel, and who pays the price? Children.” As he sat in a chair, he shook dozens of young hands and autographed many caps and at least one sports jersey. In his prepared speech to the rabbis, Francis said his first thought and prayers goes “above all else, to everything that has happened in the last few weeks," a clear reference to the October 7 Hamas attack in Israel, including the taking away of hostages to the Gaza Strip,
and the ensuing Israeli-Hamas war. “Yet again violence and war have erupted in that Land blessed by the Most High, which seems continually assailed by the vileness of hatred and the deadly clash of weapons," Francis wrote in the speech. With France, Austria and Italy among the countries in Europe recently seeing a spate of antisemitic vandalism and slogans, Francis added: “The spread of antisemitic demonstrations, which I strongly condemn, is also of great concern.”

Civil servants encouraged to always act ‘like God’s people’ By Vanessa C Smith CIVIL servants who were recently invited to worship at Ebenezer Union Baptist in Exuma for National Public Service Week, were encouraged to “act like you are God's people and always be thankful.” Rev Stephen Smith and the Ebenezer church family of Ebenezer hosted the public servants during the special week of celebrations. Pastor Smith spoke on the topic, "Don't Go Back To Egypt" derived from Genesis 26:1. “If you want to enhance your presence, you must remain faithful to God. You don't need the number house to help make up for your salary...God knows your needs,” he said. He further encouraged all to attend church on a regular basis and always make time to serve and thank God. “When you're on the job, act like you are God's people and always be thankful,” said Rev Smith.
Committee chairman, Inspector Tawarii Fulford of the Royal Bahamas Police Force, brought remarks and expressed sincere thanks to Pastor Smith for allowing them to be a part of as well as participate in the worship service. “We came together as heads of departments and professionals who continue to serve our country under the theme ‘One Nation, One People, Our Public Service’ to plan for our National Public Service Week,” he said. The committee consisted of Jetta Scavalla Rolle, co-chair (Department of Agriculture); Tamika Scott, treasurer (BAIC); Rosemary Poitier, secretary (Department of Agriculture), along with members Phillippa Whyms (Department of Labour), Mrs Lightfoot and Janae Nottage (Ministry of Health), Mrs Cooper (Port Department), Shannell Thompson (Water and Sewerage), Julian Johnson (Department of Inland Revenue), Craig Thompson (Ministry of Works), Wendy Gray (Department of
Environmental Health) and the Island Administrstor Earl Campbell. The week of events included a radio interview at 98.3 FM with host Shamarko Rolle who spoke to past and present civil servants. A fun run/walk and a careers day expo were held on the grounds of the Regatta Park where ten government
departments showed members of the public the work they do on a regular basis. Inspector Fulford thanked the committee for their hard work and cooperation. “Today is our closing and we want to take time to thank God,” he said. Chief Councillor Kendal "Iceman" McPhee pointed out that many public servants face
daily challenges by simply doing their jobs. “Every day hundreds of dedicated public servants go to their jobs to ensure that the government is working for their citizens. Thus, we must recognise our public servants. Being a public servant is working hard for a noble purpose and being committed,” he said. He encouraged civil servants in attendance to have the right attitude at all times. “All of you are smart and talented. Thank you for dedicating your personal career for public service,” he said. In attendance were Island Administrator Earl Campbell, retired administrator Rev Everette Hart, Officer-in-charge of Bahamas Customs Pam Williams, Officer-in-Charge of Immigration Daron Bodie, Manager of Water & Sewerage Karen Rolle, Manager of Road Traffic Feron Clarke, Manager of the Port Department Trina Cooper, and Police Assistant Superintendents Adrian Knowles, Darvin Munnings and Trevor Curtis.

Reaching people, transforming lives, building legacy – Local church takes purpose statement from the page to the park – By The Legacy Media Group
H
OPE isn’t something we can see, but we can certainly see when hope manifests in a community: people dream, they smile, they dance, they enthusiastically plan for their futures. On Sunday, October 29, the Legacy Church took their weekly service beyond the four walls of their building to Christie Park on Nassau Street. Their goal? To spread hope abroad throughout the surrounding community. Senior Pastor of Legacy Church, Apostle Rosmery Pena, said: “Part of the vision of Legacy is to reach people. One of the ways that we reach people is through remaining active in the community. Whether it is through our monthly visits to the senior care facilities, our prayer walks in the communities, our active participation in the schools, we go to the people. We don’t just expect the people to come to us. Bringing our Sunday morning service to the park was an extension of the commitment we have made to reach the people.” Legacy Church’s mission and vision, under Apostle Pena’s leadership, are expressed and executed through various components, one of which is Legacy Love, the outreach arm. Pastor Sophia Hanna, who leads this component, explains that in this case, “LEAD” is not just a verb, but an acronym for a whole lot of action. “Church on the Park is a component of our LEAD programme, which is a commitment to Love, Empower, Assist, and Disciple at the grassroot level. This initiative focuses on the importance of vision casting, goal setting, budgeting, financial planning and resume writing seminars, as well as feeding and grocery assistance. The event was a successful commissioning

to begin working in both the Chippingham and the Bain and Grants Town communities,” she said. Apostle Pena preached a sermon on the breath of God, then passed the baton to the leading pastor for Legacy Education, Pastor Tavaris Adderley. “Much like the journey of Israel in Egypt, humanity before Christ has been toiling under the cruel conditions of the Pharoah called sin, and at times even though we’ve come to faith in Jesus, we slip back into the bondage of the Pharoah called religion,” said Apostle Pena. “Under that level of toil and bondage, we slip into despair and lose our hope. Exodus 6:9 says that even after Moses announces the great plan of deliverance for the Israelites,
Kodesh , the Holy Spirit, to recover our breath.” When Pastor Adderley took the mic, he began with the scripture: “Let everything that hath breath, praise the Lord.” In many regards, it was one sermon, just with two different vocal expressions. Pastor Adderley added, “We tend to look at it as a consequence or a response to a call: because I have breath, I should praise but I believe it’s both a consequence and a prerequisite. In order to continuously have praise, we need breath. We have to take moments to take a breath so we can continue in our praise.” He contended that having breath to praise is related to the goal of restoring hope. Citing Proverbs 13:12, he reminded
they could not hear him because of ‘anguish of spirit’ . The original Hebrew uses the Kodert Ruach (anguish of spirit, short of breath).” According to Apostle Pena, the level of despair highlighted in this passage points to a complete loss of hope. The people could not hear because they no longer hoped for or believed that their situation would change. She continued, “Unfortunately, many of us even as believers find ourselves in this kind of condition. Our church, our people and our nation have lost their breath. But God has a solution for the problem and at the birth of the church the Lord poured out the Ruach Ha
those in attendance: “Hope deferred makes the heart sick but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.” As Legacy continues in and beyond the Bain and Grants Town communities with these outreach efforts, that is exactly what they are hoping to accomplish by the grace of God: simultaneously healing sick hearts while planting more and more trees of life and hope throughout our nation. For more information, check out Legacy Church on Facebook. Sunday services are 10.30am on John F Kennedy Drive, and once monthly, on the first Sunday of each month, at 6.30pm, they hold Tehillah Nights: a combination of spontaneous worship, healing and deliverance.
