BAISS championships all set after sudden death playoffs By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net THE Bahamas Association of Independent Secondary Schools (BAISS) championship series are all set after the sudden death playoffs concluded at the Freedom Farm baseball complex in Yamacraw last night. In the senior boys’ matchup, the CW Saunders Cougars advanced in thrilling fashion with an 1817 win over the Queen’s College Comets. Natt Ferguson came in to pinch hit with the score tied in the bottom of the seventh inning and his sacrifice fly drove in the gamewinning run. Jason Wood was a force at the plate for the Cougars and went 3-3 on the night, including a grand
slam and eight RBI. The Cougars built a 14-6 lead before the Comets’ late surge. With eight unanswered runs, QC would eventually tie the game at 14 in the bottom of the sixth inning, setting the stage for a dramatic finish. The Comets plated three runs in the top of the seventh inning for their first lead of the game and took a 17-14 advantage into the bottom half. In their turn at bat, the Cougars drew several walks and, with the bases loaded, Vanhusen Woods blasted a three RBI triple to tie the score and set the stage for Ferguson’s heroics. They will advance to face the St Augustine’s College Big Red Machine in the championship series. “This one really means a lot to me. I’ve been at CWS for five
years and every year we would make the playoffs and get put out early,” said Cougars pitcher Kawan Dames. “We just need to work on our hitting and our defence ahead of next game.” In the junior boys’ division, the NCA Crusaders advanced yesterday with a 6-3 win over the Comets. They will advance to face SAC in the final after they defeated the CW Saunders on Tuesday afternoon. “This one was really special for us because it’s the first time in the school’s history that the junior boys have made it to the championship,” said Crusaders coach Richard Wilson. “We went 5-1 on the season, and we had an okay game against SAC, so we’re optimistic. We just have to come in focused and lock in for the final game.”
The Comets finally got a muchneeded win in the junior girls’ division when they advanced to the championship series with an 11-10 win over the St Augustine’s College Big Red Machine in come from behind fashion. Trailing 10-9 in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Comets scored two runs, capped by Carnitra Mackey’s RBI single. They will face the CW Saunders Cougars in the final. “It’s a great feeling being able to move on to the next round,” said Comets coach Sandrea Holmes. “Our goal was to make it to the championship round, and now we have to take it one game at a time.” The win ensured the Big Red Machine would be unable to repeat their feat of sweeping championship titles in all four divisions
Buddy scores 14 in loss to Kings ROOKIE guard Buddy Hield had 12 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter as the Sacramento Kings defeated the winless New Orleans Pelicans 10294 on Tuesday night. “I’m not use to this at all. But it’s a long season,” Hield said. Hield struggled in the first half, missing his first four shots and had two first-half points. “We just have to stay confident. We’re 0-8 right now, but we’re going to find a way and we are going to break through this. We have a lot of games left. All we need is a win to build our confidence up.” Anthony Davis had 34 points, eight rebounds and four blocks for the Pelicans, who have started the season with eight straight losses, matching the 2004-05 team for the worst start in franchise history. It’s been a miserable start to the season for New Orleans, which is without three starters - Jrue Holiday (personal reasons), Tyreke Evans (right knee) and Quincy Poindexter (left knee). “We just have to play better. There’s just no way of getting around it,” Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry said. “The effort is good and I talked to the guys about the fact that I love the way we are playing hard. But we all have to play smart. In some cases we are not playing smart.” After Hield scored six straight points to pull the Pelicans within five, Afflalo hit a 3 and was fouled. He made the free throw, completing a four-point play and giving the Kings a 97-88 lead with 45 seconds left. Despite 14 points from Davis, the Pelicans could not cut into the Kings’ lead and still trailed 7670 entering the fourth. The Pelicans finish a three-game trip today in Milwaukee.

for the fourth consecutive year. In the senior girls’ matchup, the St Anne’s Blue Waves advanced with a 7-5 win. They will advance to face the Big Red Machine in the final. “This win really feels good. We haven’t been to a title game since year before last and now we have to play strong in the final game,” said St Anne’s head coach Chercovie Wells. “Ahead of Monday’s game, we want to tighten up our defence on the infield and focus on a few other minor details.” Game one in all four divisions is scheduled to be played on Monday, November 14, followed by game twos on Wednesday, November 16 and third and deciding games if necessary on Thursday, November 17 – all at Freedom Farm.
SWIFT TO HOST OPEN WATER SWIM RACE AT PALM CAY FOR the third consecutive year, Swift will be hosting its open water swim race at the Palm Cay site. It has proved to be an ideal location with a beach and shallow water stretching for miles. The open water event is being sponsored by Palm Cay, Subway, Higgs & Johnson, Deloitte and Australian Gold. Another unique attraction for the open water race is that the Bahamas Swimming Federation has set tougher standards for those who would like to represent the Bahamas in open water swimming. Swimmers will have to compete in two open water races a year and will be required to make a qualifying time standard for the regional meets like CARIFTA and CCCAN. This year’s event will be more popular since the Bahamas is hosting the Youth Commonwealth Games in July, 2017. Event organisers anticipate that most of the local clubs, including Freeport and Abaco, will be represented and that we will see some great competition that will result in swimmers qualifying for CARIFTA and CCCAN and going on to represent the Bahamas well next year. The age groups are 10-and-under, 11-12, 13-19, 20-49, and 50-and-over. There are three courses, 800 metres for 10 and unders and a 1.6k course for all 11 and older age groups, and the 5k course for the 12-and-older age groups.

Danrad addresses his role as emerging leader for Cougars By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net HEADED into his senior year, Danrad Knowles was one of the team leaders to address issues surrounding the Houston Cougars men’s basketball programme on media day. Knowles, who averaged six points and 3.7 rebounds per game as a junior last season, addressed everything from the changes in this year’s squad to strength of schedule to his role as an emerging leader. “It hasn’t been easy, but we’ve developed over time, and that’s a big plus. We’ve still got a long way to go, but we’re going to get

Most of the time it has been just our families, the band and the cheerleaders supporting us. We’d really like the fan support to bring that energy and intensity for us. It’s a big deal.” The Cougars will begin their season on November 11 against
Morgan State. They finished last season with a 22-8 win/loss record. Despite the fact the Cougars were solid throughout the regular season, they suffered a disappointing 81-62 loss to Georgia Tech in the first round of the NIT tournament. “It gives us confidence, but it’s also a new season. We have to step up more and improve. We need to keep winning those big games so we can expand more,” he said. “I’ve just tried to help [my teammates] when they’re down. You’re going to get down sometimes. I want to lift my teammates up when they are down and help them any way I can. Keep your head up. Don’t get too high or too low.”

WEEK 9 AWARDS THE “Everyone Watched Me Fall Flat On My Face In Crunchtime But I Swear I’m Good At This” Award presented by Hillary Clinton - Chris Boswell. Sunday notwithstanding, he’s successfully done the Rabona onside kick before. THE “Saying Whatever You Want Works” Award presented by KellyAnne Conway - Mike Zimmer said his players can “suck it up” if he can tolerate eye surgery and that he still believes in Blair Walsh despite his disaster of a season. THE “You Don’t Have To Believe, But Watch These Numbers On The Board” Award presented by Donald Trump - Matt Ryan. NFC Offensive Player of the Week with 344 yards, four touchdowns, a 144.7 rating and a 75 per cent completion. Matty Ice leads the league in passing yards and touchdowns.
WEEK 10 Kansas City Chiefs at Carolina Panthers RENALDO: Travis Kelce lost his mind last week, and it was the most entertaining thing a team that lost only two of their last 18 games has done in that stretch. Nick Foles swaps in for Alex Smith, running back by committee swaps in for Jamaal Charles and nothing changes. Last place in the NFC South is the perfect place for the Panthers to make a run for no apparent reason. PANTHERS over Chiefs SANNIE: This is a very sad day for me. Cam is my favourite but I need a win and let’s be real, he isn’t going to give it to me. Forgive me Cam. CHIEFS over Panthers Los Angeles Rams at New York Jets SANNIE: California did not disappoint me, they came through for Hillary so I will come through for them. RAMS over Jets
RENALDO: So did New York, but I digress. Jeff Fisher….that’s enough. Play Jared Goff. If your number one overall pick is a downgrade from what your offence has in place now, then he shouldn’t have been the number one overall pick. Four straight losses, fading from contention and going against a reeling Jets and Bryce Petty at quarterback is the time to make the move. Let Jared Goff be great. RAMS over Jets Atlanta Falcons at Philadelphia Eagles RENALDO: All in with the Falcons. We have to spend less time waiting on the other shoe to drop and more time accepting the fact that after years of coming close and falling apart, this team has built up the sweat equity to contend. Clearly Carson Wentz was winning in spite of the talent around him, now we see what they really are…the Eagles. FALCONS over Eagles SANNIE: RHOA is BACK!!!!!!!!! And bet-
ter than ever, my Sunday’s now have meaning. Now if they would only bring Nene back. FALCONS over Eagles Houston Texans at Jacksonville Jaguars RENALDO: Gus Bradley is 14-42 halfway through his fourth season as the Jaguars’ head coach. He said that the Jags “need to win one to get hot.” No Gus, winning one makes you 3-6. What exactly does he have to do to get fired? TEXANS over Jags SANNIE: I am having a real love/hate relationship with Florida right now. They could really go to hell right now for giving Trump that win. TEXANS over Jags Denver Broncos at New Orleans Saints RENALDO: The Orange Crush fanbase is questioning whether Trevor Siemian is the guy at quarterback moving forward. Bare in mind…this is a team that won a Super Bowl with Peyton Manning’s carcass, so if they don’t think
Siemian’s the guy, that speaks volumes. The Saints have won four of their last five games which leads me to believe that Drew Brees will not only live, but be great at quarterback forever. Even with his Wrangler endorsement. SAINTS over Broncos SANNIE: Yep. I am still mad I didn’t get to go to New Orleans as I was supposed to for my birthday, so even though the city did nothing to me, I am bitter and mad. BRONCOS over Saints Green Bay Packers at Tennessee Titans RENALDO: Aaron Rodgers spent his entire career telling people to relax because his belief in his ability to elevate this team would always be good enough to win. After last Sunday’s loss he called out his team for their “uncharacteristically low energy.” I don’t think Rodgers sees elevation possible with this group. The most surprising thing about the Titans is that they have one of the best offences in the
league. They rank eighth in yards (379.4) and 12th in points (24.1) . TITANS over Packers SANNIE: The Titans have lost more games than they won, so I think the safe bet is Green Bay. PACKERS over Titans Minnesota Vikings at Washington Racial Slurs RENALDO: How long before Adrian Peterson gets back? That’s literally the only thing that stops this Warriors/Cleveland Baseball Team/Clinton Campaign like collapse. Remember when the Vikings were undefeated? Me either. RACIAL SLURS over Vikings SANNIE: Vikings. Just because I am back on the ‘this team needs to change their name” wagon. VIKINGS over Racial Slurs Chicago Bears at Tampa Bay Buccaneers RENALDO: The first game back for Doug Martin means the Bucs returned to
some semblance of normalcy. The Bears are a much better team with Jay Cutler than without him, but that team’s still not very good. BUCS over Bears SANNIE: I am not supposed to the choosing any Florida teams but the Bears suck and I want to win. BUCS over Bears Dolphins at Chargers RENALDO: Jay Ajayi is the fourth best team in the NFL. Irrefutable facts. At halftime he should be fitted for his Hall of Fame jacket and with about 1:30 left, the Dolphins should be up by four, the Chargers will have the ball and Phillip Rivers will have to go the length of the field. He won’t. DOLPHINS over Chargers SANNIE: Not happening Miami, not today. CHARGERS over Dolphins San Francisco 49ers at Arizona Cardinals SANNIE: The 49ers real-

‘I still don’t see any Dolphins playoff berth or win ahead’ OKEY dokey, 9-4 last week and still the leader of the pack. And I picked the Dolphins to win and they did. The Dolphins and their fans still are laughable losers, they just don’t know it yet. We will revisit this topic in about another 3-4 weeks and you will see why they call me ‘Naughtydamus.’ I can see into the football future, and I still don’t see any Dolphins playoff berth or win anywhere ahead, not even on XBox! Trust me, I just looked again. The short and sweet approach continues to be the source of my ‘hot streak’ so if it isn’t broken, why should I fix it? • Here’s who I like this week:

FIRST SUPERBOWL WINNERS UNDER PRESIDENT TRUMP WILL BE THE PATRIOTS MY, oh my. As I write this week’s picks column I realise I have been away for two weeks on vacation, and arguably, mentally away for four of the last five weeks due to the circumstances associated with the passage of Hurricane Matthew. Well, if our government can blame countless delays and obvious backtracking on the passage of that storm, I for one can certainly do the same; please don’t judge me. Today, two things are clear. Donald Trump’s policies resonated with many Americans and the Patriots are well on their way to a fifth SuperBowl title. Here is to February. In this world of know-itall media outlets and outspoken prognosticators, I am a robust 73-55-2 after a commendable 8-5 Week 9. Drawing off my “I refuse to notice the obvious” pick of the Buccaneers over the Falcons, my “I just have to help them, despite it being clear they are going down fast” pick of the Vikings over the Lions and my “I love the QB so they terrible nature of the team doesn’t matter” choice of the Eagles over the Giants ... in Week 10 I will look to right all of these wrongs and try
to make up some ground in this tough, Tribune picks competition. Here goes the often incorrect, but always slanted picks you all came to see: Cleveland Browns (0-9) @ Baltimore Ravens (4-4) As was the case with most Patriots fans, I too was devastated by the news that Jamie Collins, a player that I hold in high esteem, had been traded to the winless Browns. I was irked at the thought that a player I was sure would help my Pats clinch a fifth title this winter had to spend the rest of the fall in lowly Cleveland. It breaks my heart and I feel for a guy I am certain will, at some point, claim the title of Defensive Player of the Year. On the other end of the spectrum, the Ravens are division leaders after pummelling a battle-scared Steelers team last week. This week they are playing chalk and will look to prove that they are serious competitors in the AFC. RAVENS Green Bay Packers (4-4) @ Tennessee Titans (4-5) Let’s just call it now: the Packers are not who we thought they were. Their offence hasn’t produced

at the level we have come to expect and that defence hasn’t done nearly enough to hold this team over. Despite my apprehension with the Packers, I feel like they have enough to get by the Titans this week. PACKERS Minnesota Vikings (5-3) @ Washington Redskins (4-3) The Vikings have been trending down the last three weeks. Norv Turner has resigned, but that offence still looks wounded and incapable of putting up the kind of numbers seen earlier this year. We overlooked these flaws because the defence was so spectacular. With a view to this week, I want to say the Vikings get it right. VIKINGS Chicago Bears (2-6) @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers (3-5) If this game was in Chi-
cago I would go with the Bears … but this game is in Tampa so I will go with the Bears. Ha - you see what I did there. Jay Cutler is on a mission and is looking to earn a contract this offseason. BEARS Kansas City Chiefs (6-2) @ Panthers (3-5) The Panthers have lost that mystique that they had for much of the 2015-2016 season. I don’t know if they lost it in last year’s SuperBowl or early this season, but it is gone and all that team has to hold on to is the sheer skill and prowess of Cam Newton. While Newton has had his struggles and issues with the way games are being called, he is still one of the game’s best and could put his team over in two to three games per year. This is one of those games. PANTHERS
Atlanta Falcons (6-3) @ Philadelphia Eagles (4-4) I am still on the fence with the Falcons. A win this week will go a long way in tilting my stance. FALCONS Los Angeles Rams (3-5) @ New York Jets (3-6) I can not say emphatically that any team in this matchup will win on Sunday. As of now, I am leaning toward the Rams … that could change by Saturday. For now let’s just say. RAMS Denver Broncos (6-3) @ New Orleans Saints (4-4) Here is one of those games that my heart and mind gets torn on. Heart is with the Saints, mind is with the SuperBowl champs. I am going with logic. BRONCOS Houston Texans (5-3) @ Jacksonville Jags (2-6) The Texans are back this week and are looking to firm up their hold on the AFC South. TEXANS Miami Dolphins (4-4) @ SD Chargers (4-5) So Florida went Trump. The Dolphins have won three straight … something is afoot here. CHARGERS
Dallas Cowboys (7-1) @ Pittsburgh Steelers (4-4) Dak is great, but sorry Naughty, all good things come to a end. STEELERS San Francisco 49ers (1-7) @ Arizona Cardinals (3-4-1) There is absolutely no reason to consider the 49ers in this matchup. The Cardinals are the better team and are at home. CARDINALS Seattle Seahawks (5-2) @ New England Patriots (7-1) SuperBowl rematch check. Doubt growing around the thought of Tom Brady winning season MVP check. Pats coming off of a bye, well rested - check PATRIOTS (big) Cincinnati Bengals (3-4) @ New York Giants (5-3) These two teams are mirror images of each other - inconsistent, unbalanced and at times, poorly coached. Toss up. BENGALS Teams on bye Buffalo Bills (4-5) Detroit Lions (5-4) Indianpolis Colts (4-5) Oakland Raiders (7-2)
TIME FOR BROWNS TO WIN THEIR FIRST GAME? NOPE By BARRY WILNER AP Pro Football Writer THE Cleveland Browns are winless, 0-9 for the first time in this version of the franchise’s history. They are ranked dead last at No. 32 in the AP Pro32. And now they must play on a short week at their hated rival, the Ravens — who used to be the Browns before fleeing to Baltimore in 1996. Baltimore was floundering, losing four in a row before beating Pittsburgh, another hated rival for both the Ravens and Browns. A win over Cleveland could give the Ravens sole possession of first place in the AFC North. It’s a benefit for John Harbaugh’s team that it is taking on Hue Jackson’s squad tonight. And no, not only because the Browns have the league’s worst record. “You just have to get right to the next opponent, which
NFL PICKS, FROM PAGE 2 ly won only one game? Gee what’s happening there? CARDS over Niners RENALDO: What’s happening here is the exact formula of how to build a God awful football team. It’s amazing that this team was in the Super Bowl a few years ago. To sum up what happened since: Chip Kelly, mass retirement, Harbaugh exodus, Jim Tomsula, Chip Kelly, injuries, quarterback speaking out against social injustice but not voting and Chip Kelly. Dallas Cowboys at Pittsburgh Steelers RENALDO: We were at this point last year with the Steelers and a hobbled Ben Roethlisberger. They went from 4-4 to 10-6 by the end of the year and earn a spot in the playoffs. In fact they’ve ended the season strong for the past two years. Big Ben said “it’s halftime” indicating a second half surge. I wouldn’t trust him alone with a woman, but I trust him about this. STEELERS over Cowboys SANNIE: I have no clue about any of these teams soooo Steelers.
For no real reason at all. STEELERS over Cowboys Seattle Seahawks at New England Patriots RENALDO: This is the exact game Jimmy Graham was bought in for. With the backfield the Seahawks have right now and Russell Wilson constantly with tired legs, this would actually be the time to throw the ball from the one-yard line with the game on the line. PATS over Seahawks SANNIE: Wow, so today is the day I don’t choose any of my goto-picks. Sorry Russell, forgive
me. PATS over Seahawks Cincinnati Bengals at New York Giants SANNIE: This is another matchup I don’t really care about. So Giants, because I love New York. we did being Cleveland,” Harbaugh said. “Fortunately, I think for both teams probably, they are opponents that we both have familiarity with, being a rivalry game and in the division, and we played each other once already this year. “So that helps the preparation mentally, but things change, Cleveland has changed scheme and personnel a little bit, so we really have to look at that. “More than anything, it is getting back physically. The guys will be emotionally ready to play. It is a big game for both teams. ... It is a national game. Everybody is going to be excited.” The Ravens (No. 16 in AP Pro32) are 10-point choices over the beleaguered Browns. Is this the time to go out on a limb — way out on a limb — and take Cleveland to finally win? Nah, because Pro Picks is pretty beleaguered these days, too.
Cleveland Browns at Baltimore Ravens SANNIE: I stopped picking this team when I stopped calling myself Brown. Also they’re God awful. RAVENS over Browns RENALDO: It was hard to imagine Thursday night football being more disgusting than Jags/ Titans. This game... not the election, not Map, but this game and Roger Goodell’s quest to make football less fun are directly responsible for a drop in NFL ratings this year. RAVENS over Browns

Strikers girls, Shockers boys emerge as SWIFT ALL winners of Temple Christian tourney SET TO HOST OPEN WATER SWIM RACE AT PALM CAY St Cecilia’s and St Francis and Joseph’s basketball teams recently celebrated victory at the 8th Annual Temple Christian Primary Schools Basketball Tournament. St Cecilia’s Strikers girls and St Francis and Joseph’s Shockers boys teams won all of their games. This year the tournament attracted a total of nine New Providence public and private primary schools. During the week of October 24, four girls teams and 10 boys teams battled it out for the win. The tournament ended with the final games on October 28. The Temple Christian Primary School Basketball Tournament was established to meet the need for more local basketball tournaments that give primary school students the opportunity to showcase their talents. Veteran broadcaster Marcellus Hall explained the importance of established physical education programmes at the primary school level. “We are all aware of the many benefits of sports and the opportunities, particularly in terms of scholarships, that are available. It is critical for kids to get that early foundation in sports at the primary school level if they are going to be successful moving forward,” he said. “In situations where kids matriculate to high school without good sports fundamentals, high school coaches have to put in extra hours teaching basic skills that a student at that level should already know, it also waters down the competition.” Catholic school community spirit was evident at the Temple Christian Tournament, with strong involvement and support from parents and teachers.

the Shockers boys’ basketball team on their recent victory,” said Claudette Rolle, director of Catholic Education. “Your hard work and dedication is an inspiration to our entire school system. I extend a special thanks to coach Johnson, coach Freemantle and coach Culmer for the countless hours committed to their teams on and off the court.”

New set of clubs for Junior Golf Scholarship Programme YOUNGSTERS enrolled in the Junior Golf Scholarship Programme at the Ocean Club Golf Course, Paradise Island, were surprised and delighted to be presented with a new set of clubs by Chris Kilvington, owner and CEO of Global Pacific Produce, last month. The Ocean Club Golf Course General Manager Robbie Leming said the generous donation
from Mr Kilvington, an Ocean Club Golf Course member, is a much-appreciated compliment to the programme, which is making strides and has had a tremendous impact on its participants. “Since our January start, the programme has been going very well,” he said. “We have been making strides and can boast of several successes, namely Inecia Rolle who is now playing Divi-

We are ecstatic about this gesture from Chris and Global Pacific Produce as it adds to an overall positive experience for these kids who have been working so hard on their game all year, and we say thank you as we continue developing these juniors into better golfers.” Ten local youths, between the ages of eight and 17, were se-
lected at the beginning of the year to take part in the 12-month programme, which is designed to promote junior golf as well as instill life skills that surround the game. The programme’s personalised sessions cover fundamentals of the full swing and all aspects of the short game, rules and etiquette, and on-course instruction. It also includes complimentary “stand-by” playing
privileges on the Ocean Club Golf Course. Participants are selected based on their character, integrity, passion and potential for success at a competitive level. Cavs to visit White House on same day as Trump RONALDO SIGNS By TOM WITHERS AP Sports Writer CLEVELAND (AP) — LeBron James and his Cavaliers teammates will be at the White House today. An unexpected guest will be there, too. The visit by the reigning NBA champions will coincide with President-elect Donald Trump’s meeting with President Barack Obama to discuss the handover of power and transition following a shocking election that left James — and millions of Americans — wondering about the future. Gov. John Kasich, a onetime Republican presidential rival who refused to endorse Trump and boycotted the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, also was to visit the White House today. James had supported Trump’s Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, appearing on stage with the former secretary of state at a campaign rally Sunday to urge Cleveland residents to vote. Yesterday, just hours after Clinton had conceded the election to Trump, James posted on

his Instagram account that he woke up “looking and searching for answers on what has happened.” He posted the audio to “Alright,” a song by rapper Kendrick Lamar. James wrote: “Parents and leaders of our children please let them know they can still change the world for the better! Don’t lose a bit of faith! They’re our future and we must remain stronger than ever!! Yes we all wanna lace up the boots, put on the hard hats and strike but that’s not the answer. Love, genuine LOVE and FAITH will be the only thing that can get us through this.” The Cavs’ trip to Washington has been planned for weeks. Coach Tyronn Lue, who received a phone call in June from Obama shortly after Cleveland rallied to beat Golden State in the NBA Finals, wanted the visit to happen before the first African-American president left office. Cleveland plays at Washington on Friday night. James has openly expressed his views on numerous political issues in recent years. Following Trump’s election, the three-time champion and father of three said he felt the need to offer en-
By The Associated Press NIKE and Cristiano Ronaldo have extended their long-term sponsorship deal. The Portuguese soccer star has had a contract with Nike since 2003 and wears its Mercurial cleats. In a video released by the Beaverton, Oregon-based apparel maker, he suggested the deal was “for life,” although terms weren’t released. Ronaldo said in a statement released Tuesday by the company: “I have a great relationship with this brand, I have great friends here in the company. We work as a family, too. This is my brand.” Ronaldo, a three-time world player of the year, is captain of the Portuguese national team that won the European Championship this year. On Monday, the 31-year old signed a new five-year contract with Real Madrid that runs through June 2021. Ronaldo has scored 372 goals in 360 matches for Real Madrid, helping the team to two Champions League titles and the La Liga crown since joining it in 2009.

THE TRIBUNE
One year after doping report, Russian track team seeks return IN this May 8, 2015 file photo, a lab technician shows a sample to be tested for doping at the Brazilian Doping Control Laboratory, the lab that did drug testing for the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. (AP Photo/Felipe Dana) By JAMES ELLINGWORTH AP Sports Writer MOSCOW (AP) — A year after the release of a damning report into widespread doping, Russian track and field is hopeful of a way back into the global fold. On November 9, 2015, the World Anti-Doping Agency’s independent commission unleashed a strongly worded, 323-page account of how Russian athletes, coaches and officials had colluded in the use of performanceenhancing drugs before and after the 2012 London Olympics. That report set in motion a year of turmoil and legal battles for Russia, which had more than 100 athletes in various sports barred from the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, including all but one member of the track and field team. The Russian track federation remains barred from international competition, with no date set for when it could return.
“We’ve lived through a hard year, very hard,” All-Russian Athletics Federation general secretary Mikhail Butov told The Associated Press. “Not just regarding the participation of our athletes at the Olympics, which was the most important thing for us, but in terms of recognising the situation and understanding which way to go.” Despite being under the heaviest sanctions in track and field history, Russian officials insist they are making progress on antidoping reforms and plan to send athletes to major competitions in the coming months. The main target is the European indoor championships in Belgrade, Serbia, from March 3-5, federation president Dmitry Shlyakhtin said after talks with IAAF representatives in Monaco. The IAAF will hold a special congress in Monaco on December 3. Any Russians who are allowed
to compete will probably have to accept “neutral status” in IAAF events rather than officially representing Russia, Butov suggested. The IAAF declined to comment on the talks. “The work has continued and there is something to show for it,” Butov said. The only Russian who competed in track and field at the Rio Games was long jumper Darya Klishina, who was allowed to take part under IAAF rules because she had been based in the US for several years, away from the Russian drug-testing system, which faced accusations that officials and lab staff had covered up hundreds of failed tests. Russian track and field officials and athletes hope the IAAF will accept individual athletes’ applications to compete, even if the federation as a whole remains suspended. “Now it seems as if that criterion about living abroad can prob-
ably be disregarded,” Butov said. “The issue now is that the testing that has been done in this period is considered convincing and guaranteed to give an athlete the opportunity to be considered for competition. If it’s not like that, it’ll be an endless process.” The Russian drug-testing agency has been suspended for almost a year, with testing carried out in reduced numbers by Britain’s anti-doping agency. Russian Olympic Committee president Alexander Zhukov said the situation was “totally unacceptable” because UK AntiDoping plans to collect only 6,000 samples in 2017, compared to the 20,000 collected by the Russian agency at its peak. He said that only national team athletes are being targeted for testing, leaving youth and junior athletes out of the system. “So, in a situation like this, why not to find a fast-track way to give the accreditation back to
RUSADA and to renew its activities, especially since it is under the full control of WADA?” Zhukov said in a speech to IOC officials released yesterwday. “What is preventing this? For our part, we would like to appeal to you as WADA’s founders to assist in the prompt reinstatement of the Russian anti-doping agency and the anti-doping laboratory in their rights.” Among those who missed the Rio Games was hammer thrower Sergei Litvinov, who had hoped to compete in his first Olympics. “I’ve spent the whole year on edge,” he said. Litvinov, a vocal critic of drug use, had requested extra drugtesting by the IAAF to prove he was clean, but still came under the Russian team’s ban. He still doesn’t know when he can compete again. “Whatever will be, will be,” he said. “It could all change at any moment.”
