RELIGION SECTION C

RELIGIOUS NEWS, STORIES AND CHURCH EVENTS

Bishop Gilbert Thompson celebrates 62 years in the Anglican priesthood LAST Wednesday was a red letter in the parish of St Barnabas on Baillou Hill and Wulff Roads. The Anglican church was a beehive of activity, starting at 7am, as the members prepared to celebrate Bishop Gilbert Arthur Thompson’s 62nd anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. Bishop Thompson, one of the longest serving rectors of St Barnabas, requested from the incumbent sitting rector, Rev Fr Roderick Bain, to celebrate a private eucharist mass at the church at 8am. Fr Bain gladly accepted and the stage was set for a grand celebration.

The introit hymn was “O Thou who makest souls to shine…”, the same song that was played at Bishop Thompson’s original ordination service at Christ Church Cathedral on a balmy Saturday morning in November 1961. The first and only scripture was read by Regina Huyler, whose wedding ceremony he presided over during his tenure as rector of St Barnabas in the late 1980s. The gradual hymn was “Blest are the pure in heart”, followed by the Gospel led by Rector Bain which was taken from Matthew 6:24-33.

Bishop Thompson in his short homily expressed his sincere thanks to Fr Bain and his assistant Rev Chester Burton, the last priest under his tenure as rector of St Barnabas to be ordained. After Fr Burton’s ordination, he was chosen by Bishop Thompson and was subsequently moved to the Anglican Diocese Head Office on East Street and Sands Road. Bishop Thompson was humbled by the number of parishioners who attended his eucharistic celebration after being out of the parish for some almost 25 years. He further posited that he gives God the thanks

for the vision and direction, and for God allowing him to build an edifice that stands as a beacon on the intersection of Baillou and Wulff Roads. In his closing words he reminded the congregation, as he did many years ago, “We are standing on the shoulders on giants!” After the eucharistic celebration, members retreated to the Parish Hall, which is named in Bishop Thompson’s honour as a testament of his hard work and unselfish ministry in the surrounding communities of Englerston and Bain Town.

PRAYER WORKS INTERNATIONAL PRESENTS INAUGURAL INTERCESSOR’S FORUM PRAYER Works International will host its first ever Intercessor’s Forum and Desk Launch on Saturday, November, 18, at the Church of God of Prophecy, East Street, Children’s Chapel beginning at 9am. world. Prayer reaches into the very throne room of God to procure miracles for impossible situations. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much, according to James 5:16,” said Minister Bain. Registration for the forum is $25. Refreshments will be served. Germans commemorate ‘Night of Broken Glass’ terror as antisemitism is on the rise again By KIRSTEN GRIESHABER Associated Press ACROSS Germany, in schools, city halls, synagogues, churches and parliament, people came together Thursday to commemorate the 85th anniversary of Kristallnacht — or the “Night of Broken Glass” — in 1938 in which the Nazis terrorised Jews throughout Germany and Austria. Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Germany’s main Jewish leader, Josef Schuster, spoke at an anniversary ceremony at a Berlin synagogue that was attacked with firebombs in October. “Jews have been particularly affected by exclusion for centuries,” Scholz said in his speech. “Still and again here in our democratic Germany — and that after the breach of civilisation committed by Germans in the Shoah,” they are being discriminated against, the chancellor added, referring to the Holocaust by its Hebrew name. “That is a disgrace. It outrages and shames me deeply,” Scholz said. “Any form of antisemitism poisons our society. We do not tolerate it.”

The commemoration of the pogrom comes at a time when Germany is again seeing a sharp rise in antisemitism in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war, which started with an October 7 Hamas incursion in southern Israel that killed 1,400 people. Israel responded with a relentless bombing campaign in Gaza that has killed thousands of Palestinians. On November 9, 1938, the Nazis killed at least 91 people and vandalized 7,500 Jewish businesses. They also burned more than 1,400 synagogues, according to Israel’s Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial. Up to 30,000 Jewish men were arrested, many of them taken to concentration camps, such as Dachau or Buchenwald. Hundreds more killed themselves or died as a result of mistreatment in the camps years before official mass deportations began. Kristallnacht was a turning point in the escalating persecution of Jews that eventually led to the killings of 6 million European Jews by the Nazis and their supporters during the Holocaust. “I was there during Kristallnacht. I was in Vienna back then,” Holocaust survivor Herbert

Traube said at an event marking the anniversary in Paris on Wednesday. “To me, it was often repeated: ‘Never again.’ It was a leitmotif in everything that was being said for decades,” Traube said, adding that he is upset both

by the resurgence of antisemitism and the lack of a “massive popular reaction” against it. While there’s no comparison to the pogroms 85 years ago, which were state-sponsored by the Nazis, many

Jews are again living in fear in Germany and across Europe, trying to hide their identity in public and avoiding neighborhoods that were recently the scene of some violent, pro-Palestinian protests. Jews in Berlin found the Star of David painted on their homes, and Jewish students in schools and universities across the country have experienced bullying and discrimination. Schuster, president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, said that “something has gone off the rails in this country. There is still an opportunity to repair this, but to do so we must also admit what has gone wrong in recent years, what we have been unable or unwilling to see.” He said it’s wrong that pro-Palestinian protesters have been able to call for the death of Jews and the destruction of Israel openly in recent weeks across Germany, and said that hatred of Jews by far-right and leftist groups has been on the rise. “We want to live freely in Germany — in our country,” Schuster said.

The German government has been one of Israel’s staunchest supporters since the Oct. 7 attack, and Scholz and other leaders have repeatedly vowed to protect Germany’s Jewish community. Still, Anna Segal, manager of the Berlin Jewish community Kahal Adass Jisroel, which was attacked in October in an attempted firebombing, told The Associated Press that not enough is being done to protect them and other Jews in Germany. She said the community’s 450 members have been living in fear since the attack and that authorities haven’t fully responded to calls to increase security for them. “The nice words and the expressions of solidarity and standing by the side of the Jews — we are not very satisfied with how that has been translated into action so far,” Segal said. “I think there is a lack of a clear commitment that everything that is necessary is invested in the security of the Jews.”

Finding spiritual guidance in everyday life By CARA HUNT Tribune Features Writer cbrennen@tribunemedia.net FEELING God’s presence can sometimes be challenging during the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Normally, attending Sunday service helps you reset your faith for the week ahead. But sometimes when life is doing it’s thing, it’s important to have a mid-week pick-me up, and for many Christians that may include a call or visit with that special person they can depend on for spiritual upliftment. Tribune Religion spoke to readers about their go-to person when it comes to a faith refresher. “It was always my grandma,” Laneice said. “Anytime I was upset or needed someone to give me

“So my aunt is the one; we named her the ‘family bishop’. Every day her job is to send us the scripture and a message for the day, and you would be surprised at how those messages speak to you and tell you just what you need to hear.” Mariah a word, I would call her and she would pray with me and encourage me. I truly miss her spiritual presence in my life.” Gina said she has a coworker in her office who serves a similar role. “One of the older ladies at work is like my work mommy and one day I was at my desk near tears because I was going through a really rough time with my baby daddy and we

were on the verge of breaking up. She asked me what was wrong and I ended up telling her and just unburdening myself, and she sat with me and prayed with me and gave me some really good advice that helped me save my relationship. She has continued to be someone I go to that helps me with my faith and walk with God,” she said. For Brian, his mother is the person he talks to when

he needs to be reassured in his faith. “I’ll just admit that I don’t go to church probably as often as I should, but my mother is who I go to when I get stressed out and when I need spiritual guidance. She just has this very strong faith and the way she talks about God, you feel it in your soul that everything will be OK,” he said. Mariah noted that sometimes it just takes that one person in the WhatsApp family chat. “So my aunt is the one; we named her the ‘family bishop’. Every day her job is to send us the scripture and a message for the day, and you would be surprised at how those messages speak to you and tell you just what you need to hear,” she said.
