O’Neil and Suzannah win Bahamas Half Marathon By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net

T

wo new champions were crowned yesterday at Arawak Cay as O’Neil Williams, making his debut, and Suzannah Eneas, improving on her first appearance last year, finished as the top competitors in the Roadmasters’ fourth annual Bahamas Half Marathon. Both earned a hefty $1,000 in prize money offered by the organising committee and their sponsors. Back from his training in Kenya, 33-year-old Williams clocked one hour, 21 minutes and 37 seconds to outclass the men’s field that included his local training partner Mackey Williams and Grand Bahama arch-rival, Delroy Boothe. Eneas, 38, improved on her fifth place finish in her first appearance last year to win in her second appearance in 1:35:42 as she surpassed her fifth place finish in her debut a year ago, running 1:47. Williams said it was good to be competing on the local scene again. “It was pretty good,” Williams said after the victory. “I didn’t get much sleep last night. I just came out today. I wasn’t concentrating on the time. I just wanted to win.” The field, according to Williams, was a pretty good one with some rising young competitors coming up. But he said he’s looking forward to going back to Africa to continue his training in January, if he can secure the necessary funding because he said it’s been difficult getting the government and the governing body for the sport, the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations, to fully support him in his endeavour. 2014 champion Mackey Williams, also back in action on the local scene after a brief hiatus, said he just started his training a couple months ago with O’Neil Williams. “Coming back for my first race, I had to work a little harder, but I kept my constant pace,” Mackey Williams said. “David Ferguson was encouraging me to go on, but I want to first give thanks and praise to our

He made it possible for me to be here.” During the race, Mackey Williams said O’Neal Williams pulled away from him at the third mile and that has given him the incentive to go back to training to regroup as he prepares to go full time into competing next year. For Eneas, she only started running last year so to come from fifth to first place in her second time around was a remarkable accomplishment. “Great conditions, nice breeze and excellent course with no bridges,” she said. “The cyclists were really helpful, taking care of the traffic with the police motorbikes, so that really made it a great race. I really enjoyed it.” Comparing last year to this year, Eneas said she was able to improve because she’s now getting used to competing. “I spent the last year getting consistent with it,” said Eneas. And now that she has been bitten by the running bug, Eneas said she’s looking for the next event to compete in. “This is a fantastic event to have in the Bahamas. We don’t have to travel to compete. We can do them right at home,” she said. “So I will definitely be back next year. But I will be doing my first

full marathon at Marathon Bahamas in January. So wish me luck. I’m looking for it. It’s the next big race.” There was also a 5K and 10K race during the competition. Gabriella Thompson, 17, took the ladies’ title in 26:38 and Tyrese Kemp, 17, was the first male finisher in 28:58. And in the 10K race, Diane Murray-Fowler, 47, won the ladies’ title in 51:11 and Germany’s visitor Alexander Schaumburg, 33, won the men’s title in 41.29. The top relay team was ‘No Limit,’ which comprised of the combination of Glenroy McKenzie, Jackson Ozias and Marcus Williams, who clocked 1:29.33 for the win. Winners in the various age groups for the half marathon are as follows: Miranda Thompson, under-19 female in 1:50.58; Ryan Bethell Jr, under-19 male in 1:26.30; Stephanie Deroo, 20-29 female in 2:15:15; Jonathan Balan, 20-29 male in 2:15:06; Anna Zywiolek, 30-39 female in 1:47:56; Joya DeGregory, 40-49 female in 1:54:41; Mackey Williams, 40-49 male in 1:23:41; Kathryn DeSouza,50-59 female in 1:52:53; Carlton Russell, 50-59 male in 1:48:23 and Terry Benjamin, 60-69 male in 2:41:56.

Charles Johnson, president of the Bahamas Roadmasters running club, said the event lived up to its advanced billing and they met their goal in terms of the registration, even though they closed out earlier than anticipated because of the passing of Hurricane Matthew. “The event was well organised and everybody came out and performed,” Johnson stated. “We’ve had for the first time, three Bahamians who led in the half marathon, O’Neil Williams, Mackey Williams and Delroy Boothe. “Even though we had some international runners participate, it’s an indication that the local runners are taking distance running seriously and we can only see this Bahamas Half Marathon growing from strength to strength.” Bahamas Roadmasters features more than 70 members, all of whom would have ran in marathons around the world. They are hoping to enhance the sport here, but Johnson said the only way they can do it is by putting on events such as the half marathon so that they can sensitise the public to what they are doing. Part of the proceeds will be donated to the Crisis Centre and Lupus 242.

SHAUNAE, BUDDY, LEEVAN AND CHRIS WIN AWARDS THE Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture held its 2016 National Sports Awards in the ballroom at the Atlantis resort on Paradise Island on Saturday night. The event closed out the ministry’s Sports Heritage Month, which included the induction of 16 more persons into the Hall of Fame last week at Government House. Shaunae Miller, the winner of the women’s gold medal at the Olympic Games in August in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, carted off three awards, including the Prime Minister’s Award for National Pride, the overall Female Athlete of the Year and the Bahamas Olympic Committee award. Miller was not present but Leevan ‘Superman’ Sands, the BAAAs athlete representative, accepted the awards on her behalf. Sands, by the way, received the National Sportsmanship Award for making his comeback to the Olympics after he went down with a near careerending injury in the men’s triple jump at the last Olympics four years ago in London, England. Chavanno ‘Buddy’ Hield, coming off a sensational four years of college experience with the Oklahoma Sooners that ended up with him being drafted as the No.6 pick by the New Orleans Pelicans in the NBA draft in June, was named the overall senior Male Athlete of the Year. Chris ‘Fireman’ Brown picked up the Tourism Impact Award for hosting his Bahamas Invitational for the second time this year. His Olympic team-mate Stephen ‘Dirty’ Newbold, who helped the Bahamas men’s 4 x 400 metre team secure the silver at the Olympics, was awarded the Triumph Award. The most improved Athlete of the Year was Pedrya Seymour, who ran the 100m hurdles for the first time this year, competed at the IAAF World Indoor Championships, made it to the NCAA Championships where she suffered an injury in the final and bounced

Ayton shines on the hardwood with 2-0 outing at home By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net THE Sand Between Your Toes Showcase proved to be a welcoming homecoming experience for the most highly regarded high school basketball prospect in America. Bahamian prep superstar DeAndre Ayton had his first opportunity to play at home in several years and powered his Hillcrest Prep Bruins (Phoenix, Arizona) to a 2-0 outing in the showcase hosted at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium. Ayton averaged 27.5 points, nine rebounds and 2.5 blocks on the weekend. In game one, he posted 21 points, seven rebounds and two blocks in a 69-62 win over 22 Feet Academy (Anderson, South Carolina). Local teams participating in the showcase included the defending Hugh Campbell and national champion – CC Sweeting Cobras, the GI Gibson Rattlers, the Tabernacle Baptist Falcons and the St George’s Jaguars. The Falcons, led by star guard Franco Miller, emerged as the most impressive team in the group and finished the showcase with a 2-0 record. In game one, they defeated the Rattlers 88-73 and followed with a 55-22 win over the Cobras. The Jaguars opened with a 3424 over the Cobras in the opening game of the event. In the local finale, the Rattlers defeated the Jaguars 51-39. In addition to the Bruins, other visiting schools which competed included Prolific Prep (Napa, Cal-

ifornia), Victory Rock (Brandenton, Florida), The Conrad Academy (Orlando, Florida), The Tech Academy (Ontario, Canada) and 22 Feet Academy (Anderson, South Carolina.). Prolific Prep is arguably the most highly touted of the group featuring an elite backcourt of Gary Trent Jr and Paul Scruggs. Trent, the recent Duke commit, will play in the Bahamas for the third time after participating in both editions of the Nike EYBL Bahamas exhibition series. A five-star recruit, the 6’5” 200 pound guard is ranked No.8 in the ESPN 100 and has been listed as a USA Today Preseason All-American. Prolific Prep remained undefeated on the season and won both games at the showcase (8767) over Conrad and a win in the finale over Victory Rock. Tech Academy also finished at 2-0 with a 72-66 win over Victory Rock and an 83-71 win over 22 Feet Academy.

Baseball in the Bahamas a step closer to a new stadium AS work on the longpromised Andre Rodgers Baseball Stadium advanced last week with the announcement that the government has opted for the installation of a synthetic field at the new facility, I for one issued a round applause from my little corner of the local sporting universe. It is no secret that this facility - named in honour of the country’s first athlete to play in the major leagues - and the plans and efforts associated with it, has been in the works for some time. Whether a campaign promise or not, I am enthused that this long-awaited dream is finally moving closer to becoming a reality. For the Bahamas, a country that now boasts 14 players throughout Major League Baseball’s ranks, this $21million, 4,500-seat facility, which is expected to occupy a 24.8 acre plot just east of the Government High School, will quickly become what I like to describe as the “much needed Mecca” for baseball. If I recall correctly, the facility was torn down at the tail end of the 2002 Christie administration’s regime; now back in the saddle, this incarnation of the Progresssive Liberal Party government seems dedicated to giving us a world-class facility the likes of Antoan Richardson, Lucius Fox and so many other baseball standouts would feel proud to say we rear talent there. It was Prime Minister Perry Christie who, in July, saluted the likes of Senator Greg Burrows, who started Freedom Farm, as well as the members and representatives of the Bahamas Baseball Federation and the Bahamas Baseball Association, persons who have

“SO MANY REMEMBER THE MEMORIES MADE ON THAT OLD SOFTBALL PITCH AT THE QUEEN ELIZABETH SPORTS CENTRE – A FACILITY TAKEN AWAY UNCEREMONIOUSLY NEARLY A DECADE AGO WITH PROMISES THAT IT WOULD BE RE-BUILT, BIGGER AND BETTER. IN THAT CASE, WE CAN ALL SAY PROMISE IS SURELY A COMFORT TO A FOOL.”” worked tirelessly to get the stadium off the ground while still ensuring the growth and development of the sport. To reminisce on his words: “This point has arrived at through the sweat and glorification of baseball by many who have passed on to their eternal reward and others who are still around like Asa Ferguson.” You see, I know this field doesn’t come without history. Many celebrate the plans we have now gone over thousands of times, but so many more remember the memories made on that old softball pitch at the Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre – a facility taken away unceremoniously nearly a decade ago with promises that it would be re-built, bigger and better.

In that case, we can all say promise is surely a comfort to a fool. Baseball and softball purists alike agreed that the move to tear down the old complex, in favour of land space for what was to become the new Thomas A Robinson Stadium and flaky promise for a new one, was certainly an unfair trade-off. Thousands of Bahamian youths can recall days and stretches in which they either played in or cheered on counterparts in that old facility. Yes bases were stolen, strikes were pitched and titles were won - but, more importantly, memories were made. For the government to make such a move, evidently prematurely, was a mistake and one that ought to have been corrected almost instantly.

MINISTER of Youth, Sports and Culture Dr Daniel Johnson last week talks about the progress made so far with regard to the new Andre Rodgers Baseball Stadium. Photo: Felicity Ingraham The facts are what the facts are. It is time to move away from the political conversation and acknowledge that we all played a role in this debacle. The civic sporting organisations that stood with the government when plans were first revealed, all the way down to the passive baseball and softball fanatics that adopted the view that if they don’t want to rebuild, we will do it on our own. While I applaud the attitude of the latter, in hindsight I am sure they can admit that their actions only grew the sport in spurts and

small circles. The construction of a national field then would have given a level of validity to what the country has produced when it comes to the overall sport. Woslee Construction, whose bid of $24,956.004, was selected earlier this year, won out over Forbes Construction ($34,077,621); Scorpio/Inline Construction J/V ($29,980,689) and Consolidated Construction Management/Cavalier Construction J/V ($26,017,915). As proposed, construction efforts on the modern facility are expected to take between six months and a

year. Once completed, in addition to its 4,500 seating capacity, the new Andre Rodgers Baseball Stadium will have two secondary practice fields to the east of the stadium along with locker rooms, meeting rooms, training rooms, vendor spaces, eight luxury boxes, state-of-the-art audio/visual scoreboard and facilities for the sport’s partner, the Bahamas Baseball Federation. • Ricardo Wells writes Fourth Quarter Press every Monday. ‘Tum Tum’ and Spartans top the Eagles By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net NCAA Men’s Division I basketball moved into its second week and several Bahamian players were in action over the weekend. Lourawls “Tum Tum” Nairn and the Michigan State Spartans got an early start to this week’s festivities when they defeated the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles in the Battle 4 Atlantis Campus Game. Nairn scored the first field goal of the game and finished with two points, seven assists and one block. It was his second consecutive game with seven assists. Michigan State began this season with one of the toughest November schedules in recent memory. They began the year with losses against No. 10 Arizona and No.2 Kentucky. They face No.1 Duke on November 29 and have a potential matchup against No. 12 Louisville at B4A. They have also travelled further than teams traditionally would with the home opener at the Armed Forces Classic in Hawaii, Champions Classic in New York and the B4A in the Bahamas. Ending with the return flight from Duke on November 29, the Spartans will travel more than 13,600 miles in 22 days.

Anthony has 31, Knicks beat the Hawks for 4th straight home win By BRIAN MAHONEY AP Basketball Writer NEW YORK (AP) — Joakim Noah's illness made it an unsettling morning for the Knicks' backup centres. Carmelo Anthony made sure it was a smooth afternoon. Anthony matched his season high with 31 points and New York beat the Atlanta Hawks 104-94 yesterday for its fourth straight home victory. Anthony has never been a morning person, but he wanted to come out aggressively Sunday after the Knicks followed a loss Thursday in Washington with a lengthy meeting Saturday featuring players, coaches and even team president Phil Jackson. "Some nights like today calls for me to get it going early," Anthony said. "My mindset was just to come out and get it going early." Kristaps Porzingis added 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Knicks, who led most of the way against one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference. Dwight Howard had 18 points and 18 rebounds, but point guard Dennis Schroder missed all eight shots as the Hawks dropped their second straight following a sixgame winning streak. "I feel like we didn't play well enough on the road. You have to bring a better game but give the New York Knicks credit," Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said. "Carmelo played a heck of a game, hit a lot of tough shots." The Knicks didn't have Noah to defend Howard after doctors sent him home because of an illness. Kyle O'Quinn was told during pregame he would start, and rookie Marshall Plumlee had to rush into the city by train and then taxi after he received a morning phone call and was told he would be called up from Westchester of the NBA Development League to make his NBA debut. "Opportunity knocked and we were all ready as a team defensively," O'Quinn said.

momentum. Anthony banked in a long jumper from the right side to end the first quarter, giving the Knicks a 24-20 lead that they expanded to 46-41 at halftime. TIP-INS Hawks: Howard had his 10th double-double of the season by halftime. ... Thabo Sefolosha was active after missing the last two games with a sprained left knee but didn't play. Knicks: Plumlee was scoreless in 5 ½ minutes after getting out of his cab in traffic and sprinting to the arena. "When I got here they said, 'Hey, do you need a warm up?'" he said. "I said, 'No, I'm already warm. I ran here.'" ... The Knicks beat the Hawks for the third straight time. SCHRODER'S STRUGGLES Schroder finished with one point and three assists, sitting out the entire fourth quarter. "Personally didn't feel good," he said. "I didn't hit my shots. I didn't play like I did before but I got to do a better job of being ready to prepare myself."

KNICKS guard Derrick Rose (25) goes to the basket against Hawks forward Kent Bazemore (24) and guard Tim Hardaway Jr (10) during the first half of yesterday’s game at Madison Square Garden in New York. (AP Photo/Mary Altaffer) Howard bounced back nicely after he was ejected for a flagrant foul Friday in the Hawks' 100-96 loss in Charlotte, while Paul Millsap led Atlanta with 19 points and Kyle Korver scored 17. Derrick Rose and Courtney Lee both scored 14 points and O'Quinn had eight points and eight rebounds.

The Knicks led by two with 7½ minutes left in the third quarter before Anthony's jumper started them on a 12-0 burst. Willy Hernangomez's three-point play extended New York's lead to 65-51. Atlanta never made a serious dent in the lead, as the Knicks repeatedly hit 3-pointers every time it seemed the Hawks were building

HOWARD'S HACK Howard was tossed Friday when he elbowed Cody Zeller midway through the fourth quarter. Budenholzer said he talked to Howard about the play but wants him to keep providing toughness. "Hopefully he can find ways to be physical, let the other team feel him but still do it within kind of the confines of what's appropriate," Budenholzer said. "I think to be ejected was probably the right thing and he knows it, but he also knows he wants to continue to play physical and be a presence on the boards." UP NEXT Hawks: Host New Orleans on Tuesday. Atlanta is 6-1 at home. Knicks: Host Portland on Tuesday, trying to snap a four-game home losing streak to the Trail Blazers.

MCCOLLUM SCORES 33 POINTS, TRAIL BLAZERS BEAT NETS 129-109 By MICHAEL SCOTTO Associated Press

TRAIL Blazers guard Damian Lillard (0) goes up for a shot yesterday. (AP)

NEW YORK (AP) — C.J. McCollum scored 33 points, Evan Turner had 19 and the Portland Trail Blazers beat the Brooklyn Nets 129-109 yesterday. Portland snapped a three-game losing streak and extended Brooklyn’s skid to four. Damian Lillard added 18 points for the Trail Blazers, and Allen Crabbe had 14. Crabbe signed a four-year, $75 million restricted free-agent offer sheet with Brooklyn before Portland matched in the offseason. Brook Lopez had 21 points for the Nets. Trevor Booker had 16, and Bojan Bogdanovic 15. McCollum made four 3-pointers and scored 12 points in the third quarter to help the Trail Blazers take a 99-84 lead into the fourth. McCollum extended Portland’s lead to 22 by making a driving lay-

up and then sinking a free throw. TIP-INS Trail Blazers: Coach Terry Stotts praised the growth of Mason Plumlee as a playmaker. “What we use the most is his playmaking ability, his passing. We give him the freedom to get a rebound and take it up. We play through him out on the perimeter because he’s a good passer. He sees the game. I think he helps our perimeter guys get better shots because of his playmaking, passing and rolling, rolling to the weak side.” ... Al-Farouq Aminu (left calf) and Festus Ezeli (left knee) were inactive. Nets: Coach Kenny Atkinson left the door open for former No. 1 overall pick Anthony Bennett to have an expanded role going forward. “That was a pleasant surprise to see Anthony come in and help us out. We’ll keep looking at it. We’re going to keep looking at

our rotations and, really, we want to give guys opportunity. When we see something in practice, when we see another guy might need a rest, I think we’re always looking at giving our guys opportunities. Yes, you’ll see him and other guys thrown in there at times.” ... Jeremy Lin (strained left hamstring) and Caris LeVert (left foot rehab) were inactive. Lin Return? “Jeremy is progressing well,” Nets coach Kenny Atkinson said. “I can’t give you a timetable or an update in terms of a specific day he’s back. I just think he’s progressing on schedule.” UP NEXT Trail Blazers: Visit New York on Tuesday night. Portland heads to New York as losers of three of its last four. Nets: Host Boston on Wednesday night.

ALDRIDGE SCORES 23 AS SPURS HOLD OFF UPSTART LAKERS By GREG BEACHAM AP Sports Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) — Gregg Popovich emerged from his first look at the revamped Los Angeles Lakers with enormous respect for the work of fellow coach Luke Walton. Popovich’s veteran San Antonio Spurs also showed Walton’s Lakers just how far they’ve still got to go. LaMarcus Aldridge scored 23 points and Kawhi Leonard added 23 points and 12 rebounds in the Spurs’ fifth straight victory Friday night, 116-107 over the Lakers. Tony Parker had 16 points and seven assists for the Spurs, who improved to 7-0 on the road this season. They’ve won six straight over the Lakers, but this back-and-forth victory bore little resemblance to San Antonio’s regular demolitions of the Lakers over the previous few seasons. “Luke has done a great job of making them believe and playing aggressively, and you can really see it,” said Popovich, who earned his 1,099th win to pass Larry Brown for seventh place on the NBA’s career list. “They came back and stuck it to us. ... We got after it and executed better, but I am just so impressed with what (Walton) has done with this group.” Pau Gasol scored 16 points in his first trip to Staples Center with the Spurs, who went 18 for 19 at the free throw line to hang on after the Lakers rallied late. Parker hit a clinching 17-foot jumper with 33.6 seconds left. “They’re talented,” Parker said of the Lakers. “They play hard for Luke. They play with great energy, and they have a lot of pieces. Now it’s all about chemistry and how they’re going to gel.”

PELICANS EDGE HORNETS IN OT FOR 2ND STRAIGHT VICTORY By BRADLEY HANDWERGER Associated Press NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Anthony Davis spent much of the final seven minutes of New Orleans’ game against Charlotte around the rim, cleaning up missed layups and jumpers from teammates. He was only doing what he was told to do. Davis had 38 points and 16 rebounds, Jrue Holiday added 22 points and nine assists, and the Pelicans beat the Hornets 121-116 in overtime Saturday night for their second straight win. “Those guys usually make those shots but you never know,” Davis said afterwards. “Jrue even told me, ‘If I’m going to the basket, just follow behind me.’” New Orleans (4-10), which hadn’t won back-toback games all season, overcame a 14-point, fourthquarter deficit and found unlikely bench scoring from guard Langston Galloway to keep Charlotte (8-4) from tying its best franchise start through 12 games. Galloway finished with 23 points, including 18 in the fourth quarter. Tim Frazier added 17 points and eight assists for New Orleans. “He was really good and he’s capable of doing that,” Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry said of Galloway, who has had at least 15 points in three of New Orleans’ past four games. Kemba Walker led the Hornets with 25 points, while Marco Belinelli added 22 points and 10 rebounds. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist added 10 points and 12 rebounds for Charlotte. Davis, though, was the biggest difference down the stretch. He had his ninth 30-point game of the season and scored 11 of the Pelicans’ final 16 points.

Dolphins spoil Goff’s debut with rally to beat Rams, 14-10 By GREG BEACHAM AP Sports Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) — DeVante Parker caught a 9-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Tannehill with 36 seconds to play, and the Miami Dolphins rallied for two late scores to spoil Jared Goff’s NFL debut with a 14-10 victory over the Los Angeles Rams last night. Tannehill passed for 172 yards in the fifth straight victory for the Dolphins (6-4), who were dominated by the Rams’ defence until their final two drives on a rainy day at the Coliseum. Miami barely kept alive its longest winning streak since 2008. After Jarvis Landry caught a 10-yard TD pass with 4:02 to play, the Dolphins got the ball right back and drove downfield for Parker’s diving TD reception in the corner. Goff went 17 of 31 for

134 yards in a quiet debut by the NFL’s No. 1 pick in the Rams’ 10th game of the season. Todd Gurley scored on a 24-yard run in the first quarter for Los Angeles (46), but neither team managed much offence until Miami’s late surge. Goff got the ball back at the Los Angeles 41 with 29 seconds left, but moved the Rams only 12 yards before throwing an incompletion in the end zone as time expired. The Dolphins spent the week in California after beating San Diego last weekend, but their offence was mostly awful until Tannehill got it moving in the final minutes. Parker had eight catches for 79 yards, and Jay Ajayi rushed for 77 yards. Nearly seven months after the Rams traded up to draft Goff, their prized rookie finally got his first start and was introduced

NFL CAPSULES PATRIOTS 30, 49ERS 17 SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Tom Brady threw for 280 yards and four touchdowns and the New England Patriots beat San Francisco 30-17 yesterday in Brady’s first road game against the 49ers team he rooted for as a boy. Brady found Danny Amendola for a 5-yard touchdown to start the fourth quarter then later hit Malcolm Mitchell on a 56-yard score for his fourth TD pass. Brady also threw short touchdown passes to Julian Edelman and James White on his first two possessions and completed 24 of 40 passes. The AFC East-leading Patriots (8-2) bounced back from last week’s loss to the Seahawks on a rainy day at Levi’s Stadium. And when the game ended, a rainbow had emerged over the entire stadium — a fitting cap to Brady’s fine afternoon of football. No. 12 then threw a football into the stands behind one end zone. Edelman caught a 4-yard TD pass for the first score of the game , breaking away from Keith Reaser to the corner and just keeping two feet inbounds. He finished with eight receptions for 77 yards and Mitchell four catches for 98 yards. Brady hit White for a 9-yard touchdown then Amendola reached a career high with his fourth TD catch of 2016 on the first play of the fourth quarter. Mitchell’s athletic, reaching grab between two defenders and straightaway speed after the catch for his first career touchdown sealed it. SEAHAWKS 26, EAGLES 15 SEATTLE (AP) — Everyone knew Russell Wilson could run and pass. But catch? The Seattle Seahawks quarterback showed he can do that, too. Wilson threw for 272 yards and a touchdown, and caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Doug Baldwin as the Seahawks rolled past the Philadelphia Eagles 26-15 on Sunday. Wilson became the first quarterback in franchise history to catch a touchdown, a perfect end-around pass from Baldwin to Seattle’s athletic QB as he ran down the left sideline and dove into the end zone to give the Seahawks a 23-7 lead. Wilson was already causing headaches for the Eagles well before his TD catch. He scrambled and threw across his body to find Jimmy Graham on a 35-yard catch-and-run touchdown in the second quarter as Seattle built a 16-7 halftime lead that was more than enough. Rookie C.J. Prosise had a 72yard touchdown run on Seattle’s fifth offensive play — the longest run ever by a Seattle player since CenturyLink Field opened in 2002. Wilson completed 18 of 31 passes with four of them going to Baldwin for 104 yards, along with the first touchdown pass of his career. Philadelphia lost its fifth straight road game as rookie quarterback Carson Wentz was provided an education on facing one of the best defences in the NFL. Wentz (23 of 45 for 218 yards) was good early, especially on Philadelphia’s first scoring driving that was capped by a 4-yard TD pass to Zach Ertz in the opening moments of the second quarter. Wentz then went 5 of 14 for 25 yards and two interceptions during the rest of the second and the third quarter. STEELERS 24, BROWNS 9 CLEVELAND (AP) — Le’Veon Bell scored on a 1-yard touchdown run long after time expired in the first

pass and his teammates pushed the pile 4 yards into the end zone.

The rookie got his first NFL completion on a short pass to fellow rookie Tyler

half and the Pittsburgh Steelers had eight sacks and snapped a four-game losing streak with a 24-9 win Sunday over the winless Cleveland Browns. The Steelers (5-5) scored eight points with zeroes showing on the clock before halftime after they were awarded two extra plays because of defensive penalties against the Browns (0-11). Three NFL teams previously went 0-11 before winning a game, while seven had even worse starts. Steelers defensive tackle Javon Hargrave recovered a fumble by QB Josh McCown for a TD with 3:36 left to seal Pittsburgh’s win. The Steelers came in with a league-low 13 sacks before unloading on the Browns. Bell finished with a season-high 146 yards rushing. Ben Roethlisberger improved to 20-2 in starts against Cleveland, still paying for not drafting the Ohio native in 2004. COWBOYS 27, RAVENS 17 ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Dak Prescott threw three touchdown passes, two to Dez Bryant, in the first game with Tony Romo as his backup, and the Cowboys set a franchise season record with their ninth straight win. The Cowboys (9-1) punted on their first four possessions — a first this season — against the NFL’s No. 1 defence. They marched 92 and 88 yards on their first two drives of the second half to break a 10-10 tie. Both drives ended with TD passes to Bryant , who had six catches for 80 yards. Romo, who broke a bone in his back in a preseason game, was active for the first time since Thanksgiving last year, and was the Dallas backup for the first time in 10 years. The Ravens (5-5) lost to Dallas for the first time in five games in franchise history. VIKINGS 30, CARDINALS 24 MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Xavier Rhodes returned one of his two interceptions 100 yards for a touchdown and Cordarrelle Patterson took the second-half kickoff 104 yards for a score as the Vikings stopped their four-game losing streak. The Vikings (6-4) used those momentum-shifting plays they’d been missing to hold onto a first-place tie with Detroit in the NFC North, with a rematch against the Lions looming in four days. After fuelling a 5-0 start with four return touchdowns, the Vikings didn’t produce any over their last four games. Danielle Hunter had two of the team’s four sacks, the most by the Vikings since their most recent victory six weeks ago. David Johnson rushed for 103 yards and a score and tacked on 57 yards and a touchdown receiving, but the Cardinals (4-5-1) netted only 27 yards after halftime. They fell further into the background of the NFC playoff picture with four more road games remaining. BUCCANEERS 19, CHIEFS 17 KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jameis Winston sliced up a Kansas City defence missing top cornerback Marcus Peters, and Tampa Bay snapped the Chiefs’ five-game winning streak. Winston threw for 331 yards to help set up four field goals by Roberto Aguayo, and hit tight end Robert Cross for a touchdown with just over six minutes left to give the Buccaneers (5-5) a cushion. The Chiefs (7-3) marched swiftly downfield, and Alex Smith hit Albert Wilson with a short touchdown pass with just over two minutes left. But their defence couldn’t stop Mike Evans on third-and-3 just moments later, and the big wide receiver’s sixth

Higbee, but neither team made much headway in the first three quarters. Goff showed mobility in the pocket and made a handful of key third-down throws to keep the Rams moving. They added a 46-yard field

reception gave the Buccaneers a first down. It was the Buccaneers’ fifth straight win over Kansas City dating to 1993. BILLS 16, BENGALS 12 CINCINNATI (AP) — LeSean McCoy ran 7 yards for a touchdown before suffering a thumb injury, for the Bills (5-5), who had lost three straight heading into their bye week. Playing their first game in nearly a month at Paul Brown Stadium, the Bengals (3-6-1) couldn’t move the ball consistently or make an extra point. They also lost receiver A.J. Green to an injured right hamstring on the first pass of the game; he was taken off on a cart. Buffalo’s defence clinched it by knocking down Andy Dalton’s desperation pass into the end zone on the final play. The Bengals managed only five first downs while being shut out in the second half. The Bills lost two of their top offensive players in the first half. Receiver Robert Woods suffered a knee injury as he was tackled after a catch. McCoy hurt his left thumb late in the half. GIANTS 22, BEARS 16 EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Eli Manning threw a go-ahead 15-yard touchdown pass to rookie Sterling Shepard in the third quarter as the Giants rallied for their fifth straight win. Manning (21 of 36 for 227) also threw a third-quarter touchdown to Will Tye, Rashad Jennings scored on a 2-yard run and Robbie Gould kicked a 46-yard field goal on a day he missed two extra points in a gusty MetLife Stadium. The Giants (7-3) got a second-half shutout from their defence and a clinching interception from Landon Collins as injuries on the offensive line finally caught up with the Bears (2-8) and left Jay Cutler under constant pressure. The winning streak is New York’s longest in the regular season since 2010, while the Bears’ start matches their worst since 2002. COLTS 24, TITANS 17 INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Andrew Luck led the Indianapolis Colts to a big early lead, and the defence held on in the second half. Indianapolis (5-5) evened its record by winning back-to-back games for the first time this season. And by earning their 11th straight victory in the series, the Colts climbed into second place in the AFC South. For Tennessee (5-6), it was more frustration against an old nemesis. Luck was 15 of 28 for 262 yards with two touchdowns and one interception as the Colts scored touchdowns on each of their first three possessions. Tennessee came back with a 3-yard TD pass from Marcus Mariota to DeMarco Murray in the final minute of the first half and a 34-yard TD pass from Mariota to Tajae Sharpe midway through the third quarter. But the Titans never caught up. LIONS 26, JAGUARS 19 DETROIT (AP) — Eric Ebron had a go-ahead 1-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter. Ebron’s first carry of his career, a handoff as he went from left to right after lining up as an off-the-line tight end, was set up by his career-long, 61-yard catch. The Lions (6-4) have won five of six despite trailing in the fourth quarter of every game. For a change, Matthew Stafford didn’t have to lead a winning drive in the final minutes. Jacksonville (2-8) has lost five straight.

ATP Finals: Murray beats Djokovic, ends season as No. 1 By CHRIS LEHOURITES AP Sports Writer

gained the No. 1 position by winning Sunday at the O2 Arena. And Murray seemed vulnerable heading into the final, especially after playing three sets against Milos Raonic in Saturday’s semifinals. He started against Djokovic with a pair of double-faults in the opening game, but it was soon his opponent that was struggling with his serve as the unforced errors piled up. “There was no serious chance for me to win today’s match,” Djokovic said. “From the very beginning we could see that. He was just a better player all in all.” Normally so steady with his groundstrokes, Djokovic found himself missing easy shots time after time, finishing the match with a whopping 30 unforced errors and only 13 winners. Murray had 15 unforced errors and 13 winners. In the first set, Djokovic had a routine smash that he whacked wide. And in the second, he netted a basic forehand volley.

LONDON (AP) — Without a doubt, Andy Murray will be the No. 1 player in the world for the rest of the year. The Wimbledon champion needed to win the final match of the season to ensure his place at the top. And he did it, rather easily. Murray beat Novak Djokovic 6-3, 6-4 yesterday to earn his first title at the ATP finals, and make sure he remained No. 1 until next season. “I would like to try and stay there, obviously. It’s taken a huge effort the last five, six months to get there,” said Murray, who took over the top ranking two weeks ago and has now won 24 straight matches. “I’m aware that’s going to be extremely difficult because I had a great year this year. I only managed to do it by one match.” Murray replaced Djokovic as the top-ranked player in Paris, but the secondranked Serb could have re-

(AP Photo/Alastair Grant) Open this year. Murray is the first man other than Djokovic, Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal to finish the year as the No. 1-ranked player since Andy Roddick in 2003. He took over the top spot on Nov. 7 after winning his eighth title of the season at the Paris Masters. He also reached the Australian Open and French Open finals, losing to Djokovic

It never got much better for the 12-time Grand Slam champion, who was trying to win a record-tying sixth title at the season-ending tournament and finish the year as the top-ranked player for the fifth time. “I didn’t do much from my side. Every time I would get an opportunity, I would miss,” said Djokovic, who completed a career Grand Slam by winning the French

on both occasions, but won his second straight Olympic gold medal in singles at the Rio de Janeiro Games after claiming his second Wimbledon title. On Sunday, he capped a long stretch of playing some of the best tennis of his life, and the best tennis in the world. “I was solid enough when I needed to be,” Murray said, perhaps understating his accomplishment.

“You never beat a player as good as Novak if you don’t play well.” Sunday’s match was the first time since 2000 that the year-end No. 1 ranking was on the line in the final match of the season. Sixteen years ago, Gustavo Kuerten beat Andre Agassi to give the Brazilian the top ranking ahead of Marat Safin. Despite winning the opening two Grand Slam tournaments this year, Djokovic has struggled in the second half of the season. He lost to Sam Querrey in the third round at Wimbledon, ending a 30-match winning streak at major championships. He later lost to Stan Wawrinka in the US Open final. “Well, the last five, six months have not been ideal,” Djokovic said. “But sometimes it’s just normal, I guess, to experience, to live these kind of things, not to have the half seasons as well as you want them to be, as well as they’ve been in the last three, four years. That’s all.”
