DRESSING YOUR HOME FOR A HOLIDAY SALE

IF your home is currently on the market, you may be torn between staging it to sell and decorating for the holiday season. On the one hand, you want to show your home off to its best advantage. At the same time, you’d like to add a festive touch. You can have it both ways by striking a balance between the two. The golden rule of home staging is decluttering. That means removing knickknacks, making sure the fridge door and all surfaces are free of clutter and even storing a couple of pieces of furniture to create more of a feeling of space. By now you’re probably asking, doesn’t this run contrary to the idea of dressing a home up for Christmas? Yes and no. Any home that’s on the market should already be decluttered. Dressing up your home for Christmas can actually enhance
staging as long as decorations are simple and elegant. Forget about an oversized tree. String a slender Christmas tree in white fairy lights with a few stylish decorations. Avoid gaudy ornaments and tinsel. Opt for a single clear glass bowl of scented pine cones on the coffee table over Santa figurines. In other words, let the decorations work with the house as opposed to standing out like a sore thumb. Use white fairy lights in the front yard as opposed to inflated Santas and reindeer. If you don’t have time for a tree, adding greenery to your house will give it life. A couple of small palms dressed in white fairy lights will create an elegant cascading effect. Allow prospects to see your home in a clean and uncluttered state and not overshadowed by glitz and glitter. Keep it simple. SMELLING CHRISTMAS What can be more enticing than
the smell of lemon or cinnamon wafting from the kitchen? A small pot simmering with lemon or orange peel or cinnamon creates a welcoming and relaxing environment. So does the smell of chocolate – a good excuse to throw a pan of chocolate chip cookies in the oven. TAKING ADVANTAGE OF SALES The retail world has changed dramatically over the years and sales now seem to run throughout the holiday season, starting with Black Friday and extending to the more traditional post-Christmas sales. The season provides an opportunity to make smart, more affordable purchases if you need to update your home. A well-staged front yard will boost curb appeal. A couple of new Adirondack chairs in front of a small water feature will set the stage nicely. Shop wisely and don’t buy simply for the sake of buying.

LAST CALL FOR CHRISTMAS
SO its getting down to the wire starting to feel that certain holiday spirit in the air. You’re likely planning to spend some time relaxing and may be entertaining some family and friends. How about a party in the garden, the weather is generally perfect, not too hot, not too many insects? But maybe your garden isn’t exactly perfect for a party, what can you do in this short time to get it looking right for your Christmas comeon-over. Ok, lets begin with what you already have. If you are a Bahamian or you have lived here for a minute you likely have Bougainvilleas and Hibiscus already in your garden. So lets see if we can get them to light up. Well first, truth is that most varieties of both hibiscus and bougainvillea flower in this cool weather of our so call Bahamian winter. So that is a great plus, you have mother nature on your side. Now the difficulty you can face with both of these flowering shrubs is that they like to flower best from new shoots. For this reason most professional landscapers would have already cut back their plants and they should be well on there way to having filled out so that they are just waiting to take off. However, if you have not done this all is not lost, your plants will still shoot maybe not so profusely but that’s fine, lesson learned for next year. First fertilise your flowering shrubs immediately with what is called a bloom boosting formula. It is simple a fertiliser that is heavier on potassium and phosphorus that are the minerals that promote flowering. So get that down around your shrubs. If these are older trees be certain to loosen the soil around the plant and you may also need to add some potting soil depending on the quality of the soil you have. Next, begin an aggressive routine of watering those plants maybe daily for the first week then maybe three times a week there after
and there will be light. Having fertilised your plants you should expect that the insects and slugs will come out. They are drawn to the new growth as a food source, so you will likely have to treat your shrubs if you see signs of insect or snail damage. On Bougainvilleas this usual presents as leaves that have holes or are half eaten off. Bougainvillea Tree This is the result of snails feeding. On hibiscus you will see leaves that are deformed and bent there is likely a white cotton looking formation around the flower buds. This is mealy bugs which is the most popular of the many insects that often feed on hibiscus. For the best flowering results these pest need to be eliminated as they stress the plants, drain vital nutrients from the shrubs and in some cases transmit disease that can prove detrimental. Slugs are relatively easily controlled using either organic or chemical snail baits. Similarly mealy bugs can be eliminated Bougainvillea Plants using organic oils or chemical insecticides easily bought at any plant nursery. Keeping the pest effect to a minimum puts less pressure on you plants and as a result allows them to get busy with the job of flowering. So you have your plan for the main garden areas but here is the final ingredient to blow the guest away. Buy pots and go crazy with the wide variety of perennial flowers that are in season. From the super popular Impatiens to Pentas or go with the classic holiday route and buy clusters of Poinsettias. One word of caution however is don’t purchase too early Poinsettias as many store bought perennials have been breed to peek within a certain amount of time. So hold out and purchase close to the date over running your pots. Finally as you expect to display them. If however your regards pots. Depending on your purchasing small perennials that will need to budget there is a wide variety of grow-in and fill out a bit. Purchase those two both hard shell and plastic pots to be to three weeks ahead of your date. This will found locally in every colour you will allow them time to recover from the transplant want. So you have no excuse invite and have the time to spread out and begin them over and blow them away.
