Frances Holland Donald, 87 beloved wife and mother, passed away at her home in Camperdown, Nassau on November 20, 2023 after a brief illness. After attending the University of Georgia she married her Georgia Tech (and Nassuvian) sweetheart David Brice Donald in Atlanta in 1956. The honeymooners were soon sent to post-war Wertheim, Germany courtesy of the US Army, where they got their first real taste of travel and early love of Europe. After several years and the birth of two of their four children in Savannah, GA, the family moved to Nassau in 1962, where they would permanently reside. In addition to raising her children (and many litters of puppies) Fran worked as the bookkeeper for the family business Nassau Ready Mixed Concrete alongside her sister-in-law and best friend Susie Andrews.

Once the children were grown she and Dave began traveling the world, with extended stays in France and Ireland and exotic cruises to Asia, South America and the Middle East. They also enjoyed a second home in Hiawassee, GA. Some of her many hobbies included gardening (orchids were her passion), reading, bridge, tennis, snow skiing, boating, watching her Atlanta sports teams and spoiling her dogs and 11 grandchildren. Known for her kindness, great sense of humour and sweet Southern drawl, Fran had many friends and was the consummate hostess. She was adored by everyone who knew her and will be sorely missed. Recording artist Sapphire J seeks to reshape conversations around gospel music with new album By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net

E

MERGING gospel artist Leshea “Sapphire J” Jones recently celebrated the release of her new album which she believes will bring listeners closer to God. Sapphire J re-introduced herself and her sound to the Bahamian public during a special concert at the Bahamas Harvest Church featuring music from the album “Pen & Tongue”. The concert was nothing short of a “transformative experience”, she told Tribune Religion. It also featured an appearance by special guest Rich Tolbert Jr, a singer, songwriter, and worship leader from New York. The album incorporates singing and rap, and features collaborations with talented local artists. Sapphire-J's latest single, "Divine Love," featuring Yasmin Newbold, offers a glimpse into the artistry and message found throughout the album.

The album, she said, is “designed to revolutionise the worship experience by expressing it through creative art forms, breaking away from traditional molds.” The multi-faceted artist and minister boasts of a diverse portfolio that reflects a commitment to uniqueness, which is evident in her various roles as a spoken word minister, motivational speaker, Christian life coach, author, youth leader, and fine arts instructor.

Now 35, Sapphire-J's journey began at the age of 13 when she discovered her talent for poetry, leading her to commit her life to Christ. Her creative prowess culminated in the publication of her first book of poetry, "Wait! I Have Something to Say," and subsequently, her first official memoir, "Rejecting Rejection," set to be released next Summer. Sapphire-J has pioneered the Christian spoken word movement, "Pen & Tongue," making

a significant impact in the Bahamas and beyond through events like Youth Alive, Fam Fest, and Talent Jams. In addition to her ministerial achievements, she works to extend her influence internationally, aiming to reshape the perception of gospel events. Her goal is to make gospel events not only spiritually uplifting but also visually appealing and exciting. "To be a voice trusted to be a pioneer in creating a new genre in the gospel industry today is major. To share my walk with God in a creative art form to draw the sick and healed in one environment is something I do not take for granted, and for this, I am honoured to be a vessel used by God,” she said. The album release concert not only marked the unveiling of Sapphire-J's latest artistic endeavour, but also served as a call to authenticity and openness in one's relationship with God. "I want this album to start certain conversations and know that it’s OK to be authentic and relatable,” she said.

Female pioneers and legacy-builders encouraged to lead by example during ‘God’s Model Women’ conference By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Writer acadet@tribunemedia.net

U

NDER the theme “God’s Model Women”, the Leading in Stilettos Dynasty recently hosted a conference for wives, mothers, preachers, visionaries, executives, trailblazers, pioneers and legacy-builders. The organisation is committed to building a lasting legacy in every aspect of their lives while fostering genuine connections with each other. Sherika Brown, the organisation’s founder, said the testimonials have been coming in from many women who attended last weekend have been amazing. “What a blessing it was,” she said of the conference. “I am so grateful for the model women Prophetess Phillippa Pratt, Felicia Archer and Pastor Des Tanya who allowed the Lord to use them and contribute to such a rich ministry experience for the ladies in attendance.

“As we prepared to climax our dynasty weekend, we spent the afternoon at a Lather and Learn Session at Born Again Naturals where we learned how to create our own candles, lotions, and soaps. To describe the session as refreshing is an understatement. It was absolutely fun and the fellowship was amazing. In the Leading in Stilletos Dynasty we create meaningful experiences.”

The weekend culminated with a brunch at Sherika’s home church. “The weekend was simply beautiful and epic with these ladies,” she said. Sherika told Tribune Religion after planning the event in only three weeks, she was amazed at the overall turnout. “Initially, I was going in a different direction, just doing an empowerment session on

a Saturday. During my prayer time, I felt like the Lord was saying the women needed ministry. And so I went in that direction in terms of creating an environment for women to specifically be ministered to what they are currently dealing with,” she explained. “The theme was ‘God’s Model Women’, so the focus of it was really to help women to realise that they are examples, and everything about their lives,

someone is following it. It was to help them recognise that they possess characteristics and traits that other women can model. For the most part, most of the women did get that, based off the feedback.” Sherika believes the weekend was an opportunity for genuine sisterhood, with all of the events contributing to the overall goal for promote and foster God’s model women.

‘What can we afford to lose?’ NEW ‘STONE YARD DEVOTIONAL’ POSES BIG QUESTIONS ABOUT GOODNESS, PURPOSE AND SACRIFICE By SHADY COSGROVE Associate Professor Creative Writing University of Wollongong (THE CONVERSATION) Charlotte Wood’s “Stone Yard Devotional” tells the story of a woman who abandons her city life to live in a rural religious compound. In the vein of her awardwinning “The Natural Way of Things”, Wood continues to explore relationships between women in isolated groups, and more broadly, tensions between the individual and the collective. The narrator has left her job and her marriage, choosing to live a simple existence with reclusive nuns. The reader is left to wonder: what has compelled her into this life of quiet? Our unnamed protagonist is sceptical about religion, yet takes her place in the community seriously, focusing on daily tasks with repetition and care, as if devotion is about attention rather than belief. Wood’s novel is set against the backdrop of COVID. Despite the narrator’s focus on daily life in the compound, the outside world infiltrates. The characters wear masks when making the pilgrimage to town for supplies, and the narrator remembers the external landscape when visitors arrive. Bushfire season begins and a sense of menace “out there” creeps ever closer. And then, a plague of mice descends. Of all the arrivals, this is the most visceral – the descriptions are brutal in their exquisite detail. The sisters contemplate what a plague might mean. What would happen if we did nothing? What can we afford

to lose, and what must be protected? The post-COVID reader (if such a thing exists) is reminded that inaction can be another form of action. And even though the nuns set traps, emptying them every hour as the plague grows, they have trouble digging holes big enough to bury all the mice. The tiny creatures eat through electrical equipment and plastic, into food rations and stores, enforcing a squeamish patience on both narrator and reader. The oven, and then the dishwasher and washing machine, become unusable. “All those [washing] tasks are now to be done by hand: there’s no point replacing the parts until the plague is over.” Grief, legacy and suspicion At times, I thought this was a book about grief and legacy – how we remember our parents, how they shape us, how we live for and against their values. Within two paragraphs of the narrator arriving at the compound, we flash back to her car journey there, stopping at her parents’ graves along the way. The narrator remembers her mother’s gardening, her ancestral hands in the earth. Further flashbacks emphasise the support and intergenerational trust between the narrator and her mother: “As I grew into my twenties, then thirties […] I began to understand how rare such a simple and powerful trust had been. I wished again that I had been able to say any of this to her when she lived.” This first-person storyteller recounts how her mother was described as a humanitarian, a woman

AUTHOR Charlotte Wood’. who never ridiculed others’ beliefs. “No matter how outlandish or foolish she may privately have thought it, my mother was a person who respected the fact of belief in and of itself.” This mother also stood up against prejudice and protected the vulnerable, sometimes to her own detriment. This kind of idea reverberates throughout the book: doing what is “right”, the tension between the self and the group, and how this plays out specifically for women – whether in their relationships with each other or their positions in a community. Ideas of “rightness”, “risk” and “belonging” are further explored when the skeletal remains of a murdered nun are returned to the compound from Thailand, where she had moved to work with battered women. Sister Jenny, a dear friend to some of the compound residents, was the victim of gender-based violence. This proves striking within the context of Stone Yard Devotional. The narrator claims to be

Photo:Carly Earl unconcerned with fostering friendships with the nuns she lives with, even as she identifies with them. The implication is that female friendship itself is something to be wary of. As she says about one of the nuns, Sister Carmel, when she senses her disapproval, “I used to care about what she and the others thought of me … but I don’t anymore.” Yet, as a figure from the narrator’s past arrives, escorting Sister Jenny’s bones across international borders – amid COVID travel restrictions – we begin to understand why the narrator might feel suspicious of social groups, female friendship and her own role in past events. A novel of questions Despite the declarative nature of the text, the aloof, first-person narration does not invite the reader into the narrator’s head. There is a lack of intimacy to the voice, as though the quiet of living a monastic life has settled into the narrator’s brain. The reader sits with her, observing as the story unfolds. We are watching

someone ponder, not confess. Many of the chapters’ introductory sentences don’t have subjects; they begin with verbs: “Arrive finally at about three”. Or: “Slept poorly”. The reader is witnessing the solitary act of an individual taking notes, or writing in a journal. This is confirmed when the narrator says: “Nobody will read this but me. Even so, I imagine there are things I’m leaving out.” And it’s further emphasised by a lack of dialogue within the book. We are forced to trust our quiet narrator, because few other characters are allowed to speak for themselves. Like “The Natural Way of Things”, this is not a fast-moving page-turner. It’s a text that invites introspection and pondering. Wood writes novels that are important to read. I think about the world in different ways after her characters have entered my consciousness. But her books won’t be hurried – they take their time. “Stone Yard Devotional” offers line-by-line

writing that haunts, and descriptions and ways of seeing the world that linger. The novel’s ideas and questions have made me consider the complicated nature of belonging as a woman in a patriarchal order where women are frequently pitted against each other, and how complicated female relationships can be. The narrator remembers her social network in high school: how she took part in bullying a young woman, and how it escalated into assault. In Wood’s novel, we learn girls and women who bully may also feel remorse and try to make amends. We watch the bullied outsider, fearlessly committed to being herself, achieve national fame. We see another outsider-friend become the unfortunate victim of terrifying violence as she pursues her life purpose. This is a novel of questions. How does the past ripple into the present? How do we live with our past actions? What is the nature of forgiveness? What is the nature of religious belief? How might we understand experiences of the spiritual? I think, ultimately, it’s a story of memory and sacrifice. It asks what we do and don’t remember of our pasts. And it asks: what are we willing to give up in the name of our life’s purpose? How St Nicholas inspired the Santa Claus legend By LUIS ANDRES HENAO Associated Press THE white-bearded Christian saint whose acts of generosity inspired America’s secular Santa Claus figure is known worldwide — but Saint Nicholas' origin story is not. The legends surrounding jolly old St. Nicholas — celebrated annually on December 6 — go way beyond delivering candy and toys to children. WHO WAS ST NICHOLAS? St Nicholas was a fourth century Christian bishop from the Mediterranean port city of Myra (in modern-day Turkey). “Much of the rest is legend. There’s not really a lot of hard historical evidence about St. Nicholas,” said the Rev. Nicholas Ayo, author of “Saint Nicholas in America: Christmas Holy Day and Holiday.” But whether the stories are true is not so much the point, said Ayo, an 89-year-old retired Notre Dame University professor named after St. Nicholas. “There’s no Santa Claus that lands on the roof, but there’s a desire in people’s heart for an unconditional love that doesn’t depend on your behavior, but the fact that you’re somebody’s child.” Devotion to St Nicholas — also referred to as St. Nick — spread during the Middle Ages across Europe and he became a favorite subject for medieval artists and liturgical plays, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica. He is the patron saint of Greece and Russia, Moscow and New York, as well as charities, children and pawnbrokers. He also is the patron saint of sailors. In 1807, Italian sailors took the remains of St Nicholas from Myra to the seaport of Bari, on the southeast coast of the boot of Italy. They built a church in his honor; relics believed to be his are kept in the Bari’s 11th century basilica of San Nicola.

A TRADITIONAL St. Nicholas procession in the village of Lidecko, Czech Republic, on Monday, December 4, 2023. Photo:Petr David Josek/File WHEN IS ST NICHOLAS DAY CELEBRATED? St Nicholas Day is celebrated every year on December 6, typically by filling the stockings and shoes children leave out overnight with sweets and toys. It also is a fitting date for the patron saint of sailors. “The December feast day of Saint Nicholas coincides with the beginning of the winter storm season on the Mediterranean,” Ayo writes.

FULL-length icon by Jaroslav Cermák, showing Saint Nicholas with a halo, dressed in clerical garb, and holding a book of the scriptures in his left hand while making the hand gesture for the sign of the cross with his right.

WHAT ARE THE LEGENDS OF ST NICK? Legends surrounding St Nicholas' generosity appear in texts ranging from medieval manuscripts to modernday poems, including how he interceded on behalf of wrongly condemned prisoners and miraculously saved sailors from storms.

One of the most famous legends, Ayo said, features the aging father of three young women who didn’t have means to pay for their dowry. St. Nicholas is said to have thrown gold pieces into the man’s window. “It is the quintessential Nicholas," Ayo writes. “It requires no miracle, no credulity from the hearer, and no superstition at any level. What is needed is only a generous heart ready to give of his wealth in a self-effacing way that others may come to know a deep love in their life." HOW DID ST NICK INSPIRE AMERICA'S SANTA CLAUS FIGURE? Devotion to St.Nicholas seems to have faded after the 16th century Protestant Reformation, except in the Netherlands where his legend remained as Sinterklaas. In the 17th

century, Dutch Protestants who settled in New York brought the Sinterklaas tradition with them. “The Dutch had St Nicholas on the bow of the first ship that went into New York harbor,” Ayo said. Eventually, St Nicholas morphed into the secular Santa Claus. Artist Thomas Nast, an engraver in Morristown, New Jersey, who illustrated the front cover of Harper’s magazine for many years, played a key role in the transformation, Ayo said. “He followed the description of Santa Claus or Saint Nicholas — and Clement Clarke Moore’s ‘Twas the Night before Christmas’ poem,” Ayo says. “So, that’s how that got changed. But in Europe, the bishop shows up in bishop’s clothing at the door sometimes.”

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT HANUKKAH AND HOW IT'S CELEBRATED AROUND THE WORLD By GIOVANNA DELL'ORTO Associated Press Hanukkah — also spelled Chanukah or other transliterations from Hebrew — is Judaism’s “festival of lights.” On eight consecutive nightfalls, Jews gather with family and friends to light one additional candle in the menorah — a multibranched candelabra. In Hebrew, Hanukkah means “dedication,” and the holiday marks the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem in the 2nd century BC, after a small group of Jewish fighters liberated it from occupying foreign forces. With the tiny supply of ritually pure oil that they found in the temple, they lit the menorah — and it stayed lit for eight days. The ritual of lighting a nightly candle, as well as the emphasis on cooking foods in oil such as potato pancakes called latkes, memorialize this miraculously long-lasting oil.

AN ULTRA-Orthodox Jewish man stands in front of a menorah on the third eve of Hanukkah, at the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest site in Jerusalem's old city, in 2009. Photo:Sebastian Scheiner/AP

When is Hanukkah 2023? The dates of the holiday are based on Hebrew month of Kislev, which usually coincides with November-December in the Gregorian calendar. This year, Hanukkah will be celebrated from December 7 through December 15. Does Hanukkah observance vary? Jews across the religious observance spectrum — from Reform to Conservative to Orthodox — focus on the same theme of bringing light into the darkness and emphasising that even a small, against-the-odds

PEOPLE gather around the 10-foot menorah during the "Hanukkah on the Pier" event at the end of the San Clemente pier hosted by Chabad of San Clemente in San Clemente, California, Sunday, December 18, 2022. Photo:AP/File

effort can have a transforming effect. For this reason, even though the Talmud reflects a dispute over the order of lighting, most start with one candle and increase the lighting by one more candle each night while reciting or chanting special blessings. The candles are added from right to left, but lit from left to right on the menorah, thus always starting with the newest light. The special menorah used for Hanukkah has eight branches, with a ninth place for the candle called shamash from which all others are lit. The tradition calls for candles with a real flame, though some also use electric ones in public displays, such as in hospitals, for safety reasons.

How is Hanukkah celebrated? A menorah is lit in each household and traditionally is placed where it can be seen from the outside, such as a doorway or windowsill, to symbolize the spreading of God’s light to all nations. The lighting of menorahs in city streets and parks has become more prominent in recent years in countries around the world, including in front of public landmarks. In addition to menorah lightings, giving to charity and social works are also part of the celebration for many, reflecting the belief that the Jewish people are called by God to help make the world better for all.

CHRISTMAS CITY AT CITY OF PRAISE WILL LIGHT UP THIS WEEKEND WITH A MOVIE, FAMILY FUN AND A CELEBRATION OF JESUS

I

t’s beginning to look a whole lot like Christmas at the City of Praise. The 35-yearold ministry, which is the home of the Commonwealth & Global Prayer Grotto, is re-introducing its Christmas City to the Bahamas. Once a popular holiday favourite visited by hundreds of people, Christmas City will again light up Trinity Hill this weekend with over 18,000 lights. And just in time for Christmas. It’s a city of lights to honour and lift up Jesus, the light of the world during the festive season. Rhondi Robinson, head of the Church Financial

Services and Special Projects, along with team members Minister Phillip Forbes and Minister Jodell Roberts were given the assignment to relaunch the Christmas City. “As a city that is sitting on a hill, we wanted to bring light back to the Nation”, said Rhondi. “We want to let the lights shine, as we reach out to our communities. “Driven by a vision that extends beyond the four walls of the church, the overall objective is to rebuild a church to reach a people. At a time when there are so many challenges that can cause people to forget, Christmas City comes as a

much-needed reminder of the wonder, hope and joy of Christmas.” The highly anticipated re-launch of Christmas City takes place this Saturday, December 9, with cinema, celebrations, and Christmas lights, all in one spectacular night. Gates will open at 5pm. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children. The fun begins with a holiday family movie under the stars at 5.30pm, followed by the grand event of the turning on of the lights. The entire property will be covered with lights and dazzling structures, with a heartwarming nativity scene as the centre piece.

Special just for the children, there will be storytelling with Senior Pastor Apostle Ed Watson, who will share the Christmas story. There will also be a Kiddie Corner where the children will be greeted by an inflatable snowman and nutcracker, and dance to the tunes of musical

lights, while they play in the falling snow. Food, snacks, and drinks will be available for purchase at concession stands throughout the night. It is a night for families to enjoy. Senior Pastor Designate Necole Watson said she is excited about the re-launch and invites all to participate.

Located at the top of the hill off Tonique Williams-Darling Highway, Christmas City at Trinity City of Praise is a sight that you do not want to miss and an experience that you will never forget, said organisers. For more information, contact the church at 341-8164.

Bahamas Harvest Church embarks on a transformative journey – Nearly 100 individuals and married couples experience “Rebirth” through baptism –

T

HE Bahamas Harvest Church, which seeks to be a beacon of spiritual guidance and community strength, successfully fulfilled the Great Commission through a baptismal event held on Sunday, November 26, which saw nearly 100 individuals baptised under the church's branded baptismal experience named "Rebirth." In a display of commitment to fostering strong, thriving relationships, Bahamas Harvest Church also seized the opportunity to baptise married couples as part of a special initiative known as "Couples Rebirth." This unique and deeply symbolic ceremony aims to serve as a physical statement of newness and rededication within the bounds of marriage. The "Rebirth" baptismal experience, Bahamas Harvest Church said, represents a profound step in the spiritual journey of everyone involved. It is a testament to the church's dedication to fulfilling the Great Commission, as outlined in the scriptures, which implores believers to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Pastor Mario Moxey, leader of Bahamas Harvest Church, expressed his joy and gratitude for the transformative event, stating, "Baptism is a powerful symbol of faith, redemption, and a commitment to live in accordance with God's word. Witnessing nearly 100 individuals, couples included take this step toward spiritual renewal is truly inspiring. We believe that 'Rebirth' is not just an event but a lifelong transformation of growth

and dedication to a higher purpose." The "Couples Rebirth" initiative, in particular, underscores the church's commitment to supporting and strengthening families within the community. Developed from the church’s marriage series for the month of October entitled “Let’s Stay Together.” Providing a platform for married couples to publicly declare their commitment to each other and to God, Bahamas Harvest Church aims to foster healthier, more resilient relationships. The director of the church’s Assimilation System, Keisha Taylor, summarised the uniqueness of this “Rebirth” experience by saying: “This outward symbol of commitment by our couples speaks volumes. It signifies that they are committed and welcome God into their lives and their marriage. The individuals who were water baptized as well, boldly stepped out in faith and it was indeed a blessing to see them be obedient to Christ’s command. We’ve had a total of three ‘Rebirths’ this year, baptizing a total of 152 people. This last ‘Rebirth’ has been received as a gift from God. God has seen our works, He has also seen our congregants profess that He is Lord; so, allowing such a symbolic event to take place, is a blessing from God.” For more information about Bahamas Harvest Church and upcoming events, visit www.bahamasharvestchurch. org or contact the church’s Chief Corporate Relations Officer Pastor Hervis Bain III via email at hervis.bain@ bahamasharvestchurch.org
