Family Christmas traditions By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net

or Christians, the holidays go far beyond just gift-giving and engaging in vatrious festivities. Many Bahamian families make it a point to put Jesus on display during this time; making his birth the focal point of the holiday through various family traditions. Tribune Religion spoke to a few of our readers who their shared some of the holiday traditions their families have started over the years to ensure they do not stray too far from what they say is the true reason for the season. These traditions, they say, help to bring each of their households to quiet pause in the midst of all the hustle and bustle during Christmastime. Reading the story of Jesus’ birth For the Burrows family, the week leading up to Christmas is when they collectively take the time to read, dissect and reflect on the story of Jesus’ birth. Every year, a new revelation comes to light for them when it comes to this age-old story. “No matter how many times we have heard or read the story of Jesus’ birth, we take an evening to sit down and think about it from a different angle and with fresh pair of eyes,” said Tom Burrows, speaking on behalf of his family. “There are so many things in this day and age competing for our attention and it is easy to
get distracted. So in order to keep focused and celebrate the important things, we do this.” Charitable giving The essence of the story of Jesus is about how God gave his only son as gift to the world; bringing redemptive salvation. One thing the Curry family does every year is to ensure that they are giving as a family, to reflect and symbolise what God has done for them. Mavis Curry told Tribune Religion the family has a savings goal that starts at the end of summer, and the funds are not for purchasing gifts.
“During the holidays we try to give much more than we do at any other time of the year. So we set a certain amount aside every month until December. Then we allow God to lead as to where to give or whom to give,” she said. “This season is about giving and celebrating the fact that God gave use the greatest gift on earth. How could we not demonstrate our appreciation for this grand gesture by not also giving?”
together, but in their case it’s for a family carolling night. “We do not use the secular music either,” said Mildred Thompson. “We are carolling the songs about Jesus’ birth and God’s love for us. These Christmas carolling nights always turn into a break-out praise and worship session. And that is always a fulfilling time. We get so filled up that sometimes we are brought to tears when we reflect on who God has been to us. It’s such a blessing to our family,.”
Christmas carolling Like the Burrows, the Thompsons also all come
Praying for families The Mitchells have a family tradition of creating a prayer
list and praying for families and individuals who they know may be struggling during this time. “We love people. Our heart is for people. God loves people and one of the best ways we can show love for people is by living them and their families up in prayer,” said Don Mitchell. “When we pray, we invite the spirit of God to move into a person’s life and situation. And that is something that can bring supernatural and lasting change to their lives. I encourage families to pray together. When families prayer together they become an influential force,” he said.

St Barnabas Anglican Church Prayer Band spreads Christmas joy PRESIDENT Azella Major, president of the Prayer Band of St Barnabas Anglican Church, rallied her executive team and general membership body to come together this past week to pack Christmas care packages for the sick and shut-in of the parish family. The Prayer Band was given some added fuel in their proverbial gas tanks as this usual outreach
initiative is their Christian mandate during this approaching Yuletide season when so many people are looking for assistance. President Major with her membership purchased grocery items so that the Christmas joy would begin with them. This annual event sees the church members come together in St Barnabas Parish Hall, which
is named in honour of Bishop Gilbert Thompson, to package and label various care packages for many elderly parishioners who are unable to attend worship services. The majority of the participating members donned their festive colours and serenaded the sick and shut-in members of the parish on the occasion.
