A CHRISTMAS WISH LIST By Mike Lightbourn

IT may be too late to buy a new home for Christmas, but it’s never too late to put together a Wish List. The trick to compiling a realistic Wish List is to identify the “Must Haves” over the “I Want.” A lot of buyers, especially first time buyers, will find it’s not possible to get everything they want on the budget they have. Here are five tips to help you with your Wish List. • Prequalify for a loan to determine your budget. There’s no point looking at homes if you don’t know what you can afford. • Pinpoint the area you want to live in. How close do you want to be to work, family and a school? Location will determine the type of home you can afford. • Determine how many bedrooms you need. After deciding on budget and location, the most important consideration is for every family member to have a comfortable place to stay, whether that means siblings sharing a room or having their own. • Choose a lifestyle. What features of a home are most important to you? A large living room to entertain? A big back yard? A gourmet kitchen? • Imagine how you can put your own stamp on a home. Don’t worry if the colour of the paint doesn’t grab you or the furnishings aren’t to your taste. Con-

centrate on the structure, the roof and windows and so on. It’s easy to paint over a colour. WHO’S THE TURKEY? If you’re hosting Christmas dinner while your home’s on the market, maybe you deserve the Turkey of the Year award. All that aside, it’s important to return the home to a pristine state before a prospect arrives to look at it. So as soon as you’ve recovered from the holiday frenzy, roll up your shirt sleeves and get in the kitchen or hire someone to do the job. Put on some good music and start wiping down your counters, cabinetry and stove top. Wash the grates if you have a gas stove. Clean the oven thoroughly. Work those counters until they sparkle, using the correct cleaner for the job. Scrub the sinks until they shine. Replace soiled rags with fresh ones as you work. Sweep and mop until the floors gleam. Clean out the refrigerator and give it a good scrub with vinegar and water. Pull out the bins and shelves and get any gunk out. Throw away food that’s passed its prime, including condiments. Scrub the garbage can with a vinegar water solution. Clean the drains in the sinks and garbage disposal with a half cup of baking soda followed by a half cup of vinegar to eliminate any unpleasant odors.

How To Choose The Perfect

CHRISTMAS TREE SO we are done with turkey day now its time to buy the tree. Yes it is officially Christmas time again. In the midst of all the many things we have to do many of us will make our annual trip to one of the parks to pick our Christmas tree. Well here are a few helpful tips so that you purchase the perfect tree for you! Tip 1: Tree size matters. First thing, make sure you measure the space you’ll be putting your tree in. Don’t just spot it and go tree shopping. Measure the the height and the width of the area you wish for the tree to fill. If you have a tree stand, measure from the top of the stand the tree will sit in along with width of the stand so you know how wide the tree trunk has to be to fit into the holder. You don’t want to have to go through shaving down the trunk to fit the stand an this will also reduce the life of the tree as you will destroy the ability of the tree to take up water so it will quickly brown and drop its leaves. Now don’t forget, carry your measuring tape with you when choosing your tree and measure the tree. Both height and width and the width of the trunk because trees can be deceptively large and will seem small because they are sitting around larger trees. So be sure measure twice.

Tip 2: Don’t buy a dead tree. Of course, the trees are already dying once they have been chopped down, but you want to make sure you get one that isn’t so far along in the process. Hold the tree by the trunk and shake it a bit. Grab a branch or two near the trunk and pull your enclosed hand to the end of the branch. If alot of needles fall off, or the branches snap easily, you probably don’t want that tree. Be sure to avoid trees with a lot of brown needles or large patches that are discoloured. No one likes a dehydrated tree. Tip 3: Once you have a tree, make sure it stays watered. So you have chosen

your tree and now you have gotten it home. So what should you do to give your tree the longest possible run?
