“Not in that poor lowly stable, with the oxen standing by…” A message for Christmas 2023 from the Rt Rev Laish Boyd Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands

A

stable is a smelly place full of animals, straw, urine, dung and dampness. Animals, though cute and adorable, are not easy on the nostrils. But that is where Jesus was born. A stable does not meet our present- day standards for public health, sanitation or sterile conditions - you would not want your baby or grandbaby to be born there. But that is where Jesus was born. The Irish hymn writer Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-1895) wrote these words in her famous hymn “Once in Royal David’s City”. Her point was that while we may see Jesus in the manger at Christmas, that was not his final form or destination: “Not in that poor lowly stable, with the oxen standing by. We shall see him but in heaven, set at God’s right hand on high”. Here is just the point: Jesus put off His divine nature and took on human form, the form of a servant (Philippians 2: 6-8). Jesus became fully human to the extent that he was born of a human mother in circumstances that were not far-removed for an ordinary poor person of the first century (0-99 AD).

IRISH HYMN WRITER CECIL FRANCES ALEXANDER

BISHOP LAISH BOYD

Although born in a stable, that was not the extent of His worth or impact - “not in that poor lowly stable.” He went on to be baptised, and to have an impactful earthly ministry, teaching, preaching, working miracles, inspiring others, transforming lives, confronting selfishness and turning Palestine upside down. Jesus had an impact after His earthly life down through the ages, affecting human history and current affairs more than any other single human being. The Christmas message is here to teach us that our best self is not in our humble beginnings, nor in our lowest moments, nor is it when we dwell in the “stables” and “mangers” of our lives. Our best self is “not in that poor lowly stable”. Our destination is where God has for us to be, what we can become and where we can go – because of God. Embrace this for yourself and help others to realize this in their various struggles and circumstances. The joy of Christmas only has meaning when we can become. And then we help others to become as well. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from the Anglican Diocese of the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands!

Celebrating Christmas on December 25 began as early as the second century CE, history shows By MARTINUS ARIYA SETA Dosen, Universitas Sanata Dharma (THE CONVERSATION) Most people, including Christians, believe the origin of Christmas is the pagan feasts to worship the solar god Sol Invictus, Saturn’s god Saturnalia, or the Persian solar god adopted by the Romans, Mithras. Academically, this view is also known as historical religions theory. The theory suggests the Catholic Church in Rome, Italy, began celebrating Christmas on December 25 in 336 CE to replace the pagan celebrations. However, several ancient manuscripts and theories reveal that the original celebrations of Christmas began even earlier than 336 CE. Determining Jesus’ birth date Some sources from 200 CE implicitly and explicitly show how December 25 was determined as the date of Jesus’s birth. Hyppolitus (170-235 CE), a prominent theologian of the Catholic Church in Rome, mentioned the date of Jesus birth in his 204 CE work, “Commentary on Daniel”. He stated Jesus was born “in Bethlehem, eight days before the calendar of January [December 25], the 4th day of the week [Wednesday]”. In this context, Hyppolitus used the Julian calendar, a solar calendar introduced by Julius Caesar in 46 BCE. But in Jewish tradition, the date of conception of holy person coincides with the date of death. Early Christians believed that March 25 was when Jesus was crucified. Based on this theological assumption, the calculation shows that Jesus’ conception also happened on March 25. This means, Jesus was born exactly nine months later, or on December 25. This theological-based

calculation is known as Calculation Theory. The theory suggests Jesus’s birth date has not linked to the pagan rituals to worship Sol Invictus, Saturnalia and Mithras, since the pagan feasts were not celebrated on December 25. Sol Invictus was likely celebrated on August 8, 9, or 28, October 19 or 22, or December 11. Saturnalia was celebrated between December 17-23. As for Mithras, there is no compelling evidence that it was celebrated on December 25. The origins of Christmas celebrations Three different manuscripts further prove Christmas was celebrated before 336 CE.

Didascalia Apostolorum, Liber Pontificalis, and Epistle of Theophilus The texts provide information on the pastoral life of early Christians, their religious ceremonies (liturgies) and the names of popes. Didascalia is an ancient text from 250 CE. The text mentions the celebration of the Epiphany, the manifestation of Christ to the ordinary people. The Catholic Church celebrates Epiphany to commemorate the visit of three wise men in Bethlehem. The Eastern Orthodox and Orthodox churches celebrate the Epiphany to commemorate the baptism of Jesus. Epiphany is part of of Christmas feast in the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Orthodox Churches.

The Didascalia text states that Epiphany is celebrated every January 6 in the Julian calendar. When we convert this date to the Gregorian calendar, a solar calendar that has been widely used since 1582 CE until now, the Epiphany falls on December 25. Liber Pontificalis, which contains a short biography of the popes, suggests the celebration of Christmas in 2 century CE. The text reveals that Pope Telesphorus (125-136 CE) instructed the celebration of Jesus’s birth. The text does not mention the date of the festival. However, Liber Pontificalis proves that the Christmas celebration’s history is older than we used to know.

Epistle of Theopilus mentions December 25 as the date of the celebration of Jesus birth. The text suggests that the celebration was prior to 196 CE, thus, it is likely the Christmas has been celebrated before that. The three texts above prove that the origin of Christmas is not Sol Invictus, Saturnalia, or Mithras celebrations, and that Christians have been celebrating Christmas since the second century CE. TEACHING KIDS THE MEANING OF THE SEASON By CARA HUNT Tribune Features Writer cbrennene@tribunemedia.net

A

s Christmas Day approaches and the excitement builds for Santa and the presents he brings, many Christian parents may be concerned about how they can ensure they keep the true meaning of the season alive for their kids. After all, for people of faith, Christmas is the time of the year to celebrate the birth of Christ. And so it is important to retain the religious aspect of the holiday.

Some Tribune Religion readers chimed in: “In our family, we stress that it is Jesus’ birthday and so we always ensure that part of our Christmas dinner is a birthday cake and we sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to Jesus. Children love birthday parties and cake, and so they can relate to that idea from a young age,” said Lisa, a mother of three- and five--yearold boys. Talecia said Christmas Sunday and other church related holiday events are a big part of her family’s celebrations. “Just like how you focus on taking the kids to meet Santa

and this party and that party, it is so important that you include Jesus-centered events, like church on Sunday and all the Christmas concerts and plays that emphasise the nativity story,” she said. Talecia said another thing her family does is have a nativity scene in their home that reflects the reason of the season and the timeline of biblical events. “So, for example, about a week before Christmas we set up the nativity scene with just the animals and the empty manger, and then on Christmas Eve we add Mary and Joseph, and then on Christmas morning

we add the baby Jesus before we open presents. It’s just another way to let the kids focus on the real story. And then a few days later we will add the Wisemen,” she explained. Talecia said it is an annual tradition her four kids enjoy. Meanwhile, for Gillian it’s all about giving back. “Gift-giving is just one of the ways you can celebrate the birth of Christ. It is showing love to others, the way God showed love to us by sending His son. So I think it is perfectly fine to give gifts to the ones you love. However, I think it is important that kids also learn to help others in

need and so I try to get my kids see the importance of giving to strangers as well,” she said. “We always put money in the Salvation Army bucket and my family always donates a Christmas gift to a needy family. We will give them a voucher for groceries to go towards their Christmas dinner and then each of my children will pick a toy and an outfit of clothes for the children. It is a good lesson for them to learn: that not everyone is as fortunate as they are and they can learn how nice it is to give back.”

Was King Herod the Great really so ‘great’? What history says about the bad guy of the Christmas story By AARON GALE West Virginia University (THE CONVERSATION) King Herod will sound familiar to anyone who’s heard the Christmas story. King of Judea when Jesus of Nazareth was born, the ruler attempts to find and kill the baby after hearing that the “King of the Jews” has just been born. Tricked by the Magi, the wise men whom Herod had sent to determine where the infant was, a raging Herod decreed that all children two and under who live near Bethlehem are to be killed. The Gospel of Matthew contains the famous account of this “slaughter of the innocents,” and of Mary, Joseph and Jesus’ flight to Egypt. Interestingly, King Herod’s storyline is not found in any other biblical texts nor in Roman records. Yet it is pivotal in Matthew’s Gospel, which contrasts Herod’s mission, death, to that of the baby Jesus, life. So who was the real King Herod – and why would Matthew’s Gospel include him? I am a scholar who studies the interpretation of Matthew’s Gospel, as well as the Jewish roots of Christianity. Historians in the field know a fair amount about Herod’s life, and the actual facts are somewhat surprising. ‘King of the Jews’ Writers such as the Jewish historian Josephus, who fought against Roman rule in the first century CE before eventually allying himself with Rome, have provided detailed accounts regarding Herod’s deeds. In addition, modern archaeologists have excavated many sites associated with him, including the possible location of Herod’s tomb. According to historical accounts, Herod the Great was the regional king of Judea,

KING HEROD which contained the cities of Bethlehem and Jerusalem. He ruled from about 37 BCE until his death in 4 BCE, at a time when Judea was still under Roman influence. Most scholars estimate that Jesus was born between 6 and 4 BCE – during Herod’s reign, as Matthew’s Gospel indicates. Since Herod was appointed by Rome to rule over Judea, a mostly Jewish region, he was literally “king of the Jews.” However, Herod may not have actually been Jewish at all, at least by birth. He was likely from the region known as Idumea, to the south. Herod’s father had likely been forced to convert to Judaism, as scholars believe many Idumeans were, while his mother was an Arabian princess. However, as Josephus points out, the two groups intermingled quite extensively, with some Idumeans, perhaps including his father, willingly adopting Jewish customs.

Josephus even declares that Herod was basically a Judean, though it is likely that many of the native Jews in Judea would have been sceptical of their king’s claims to be truly Jewish and viewed him as an outsider, especially if he did come from Idumea. However, Josephus does indicate that Herod would ally himself with Roman leadership whenever he deemed it prudent. ‘Great’ but severe Herod the Great proved himself a skilful builder, responsible for the planning and construction of projects such as the city of Herodium; the extravagant harbour at Caesarea Maritima, on the Mediterranean Coast; and the mountain fortress of Masada, which was located in the middle of the unforgiving desert near the Dead Sea. Most famously, perhaps, was Herod’s rebuilding and expansion of the Jewish temple complex in Jerusalem. This

project alone took decades to complete. Herod’s remodelled temple was a much more grandiose structure than Solomon’s original temple, built about a thousand years earlier. Josephus noted how it resembled a white, snow-covered mountain – that is, the parts of it that were not covered in gold. Regardless of whether Herod was actually Jewish, he contributed to the preservation of Judaism. He succeeded in exempting Jews from serving in the Roman military and having to engage in emperor worship, preserving their ability to practice Judaism in relative peace. Herod also proved himself a brilliant economic strategist who greatly increased the wealth of Judea by engaging in ventures such as international trade, which included the sale of balsam wood and copper. He contributed funds to national and international endeavours, including the Olympic Games, and it is said that he even averted a regional famine. Yet Herod’s sinister reputation as a tyrant was probably well deserved. Because he constantly feared a rebellion, he would execute anyone he deemed a threat to his reign, including his own first wife and three of his sons. In addition, he was reported to have excessively taxed his constituents to help support his economic programs. Similar stories? There is no historical record of any “massacre of the innocents” – even the tyrannical Herod most likely never condoned such an action. If that was the case, why does Matthew’s Gospel mention King Herod so prominently in Jesus’ birth narrative? Matthew’s version is considered the most Jewish of the Gospels, the four biblical

accounts of Jesus’ life in the New Testament – for example, it advocates for upholding Jewish laws. In other words, Matthew’s Gospel was likely written by Jews for a mostly Jewish audience late in the first century CE, when the Christian movement was still in its infancy. Matthew’s audience would have been familiar with the existing Hebrew scriptures, including the famous story of Moses’ childhood, when he escapes the pharaoh’s edict to kill all the newborn sons of his Hebrew slaves. Biblical scholars have made the case that Matthew’s Gospel intentionally compared Jesus with Moses, who saved the Hebrews from Egyptian bondage, to convince the intended audience that Jesus, too, was a long-awaited savior. To strengthen the similarities between Jesus and Moses, this argument goes, the authors of Matthew had Herod threaten Jesus in the same manner that the pharaoh threatened the Hebrew children. The Jewish audience of Matthew would have connected the two narratives, in which good ultimately triumphs over evil. The Gospel story further villainises Herod, whose son, also called King Herod, or Herod Antipas, was ruling at the time of Jesus’ crucifixion around 30 CE. Herod may have been a splendid builder and a savvy economist – and technically the “King of the Jews.” But in the eyes of the Gospel authors, it was Jesus who truly deserved that title. The joy of carols By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Writer acadet@tribunemedia.net

O

NE of the most joyous aspects of Christmastime is the singing of the many carols and hymns that celebrate the season. I remember as a child, my church youth group would have us participate in a special holiday production which required the kids to sing and dance along to Christmas hymns; with my personal favourite being “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.” For me, these songs would always give me such warm feeling, dressed as I was in my cute little costume. Speaking to Tribune Religion, readers shared some of their favourite hymns and explained what the songs mean to them. “It is indeed a blessing to be able to recognise our Lord Jesus Christ by way of hymns and songs,” said Beverley Cooper. “The songs are tradition in a lot of homes and churches.

My favourite would have to be ‘Angels WeHave Heard on High.’ I can’t believe I even remember the song word for word. I think these kinds of songs really capture the essence of what the season is supposed to be about: peace, hope and joy.” Maria Smith said it is hard to just pick one song, as they are all her favourite. “If I had to pick just one, I’d say ‘O Holy Night’. I love to hear different versions from various artists that do Christmas albums. Mariah Carey and Carrie Underwood’s versions are my two faves,” she said. “Moreover, I think we can all agree that one of the most popular songs of them all would be ‘Joy to the World.’ “ Christina Johnson added: “How can you not love that song. It literally does just as it says; bring joy. I just love everything about it.” A number of honourable mentions included songs like “O Come All Ye Faithful,” “Away in a Manger,” and “Go Tell it on a Mountain.”

Pope approves blessings for same-sex couples that must not resemble marriage By NICOLE WINFIELD AND DAVID CRARY Associated Press Pope Francis formally approved letting Catholic priests bless same-sex couples, the Vatican announced Monday, a radical shift in policy that aimed at making the church more inclusive while maintaining its strict ban on gay marriage. But while the Vatican statement was heralded by some as a step toward breaking down discrimination in the Catholic Church, some LGBTQ+ advocates warned it underscored the church’s idea that gay couples

remain inferior to heterosexual partnerships. The document from the Vatican’s doctrine office elaborates on a letter Francis sent to two conservative cardinals that was published in October. In that preliminary response, Francis suggested such blessings could be offered under some circumstances if the blessings weren’t confused with the ritual of marriage. The new document repeats that condition and elaborates on it, reaffirming that marriage is a lifelong union between a man and a woman. And it stresses that blessings in question must not be tied to any

specific Catholic celebration or religious service and should not be conferred at the same time as a civil union ceremony. Moreover, the blessings cannot use set rituals or even involve the clothing and gestures that belong in a wedding. But it says requests for such blessings for same-sex couples should not be denied. It offers an extensive and broad definition of the term “blessing” in Scripture to insist that people seeking a transcendent relationship with God and looking for his love and mercy shouldn't be held up to an impossible moral standard to receive it.

“For, those seeking a blessing should not be required to have prior moral perfection,” it said. “There is no intention to legitimize anything, but rather to open one’s life to God, to ask for his help to live better, and also to invoke the Holy Spirit so that the values of the Gospel may be lived with greater faithfulness,” it added. The document marks the latest gesture of outreach from a pope who has made welcoming LGBTQ+ Catholics a hallmark of his papacy. From his 2013 quip, “Who am I to judge?” about a purportedly gay priest, to his 2023 comment to The Associated Press that “Being

homosexual is not a crime,” Francis has distinguished himself from all his predecessors with his message of welcome. “The significance of this news cannot be overstated,” said Francis DeBernardo of New Ways Ministry, which supports LGBTQ+ Catholics. “It is one thing to formally approve samegender blessings, which he had already pastorally permitted, but to say that people should not be subjected to ‘an exhaustive moral analysis’ to receive God’s love and mercy is an even more significant step.”

FROM PAGE B34 The Vatican holds that marriage is an indissoluble union between man and woman. As a result, it has long opposed samesex marriage and considers homosexual acts to be “intrinsically disordered.” Nothing in the new document changes that teaching. And in 2021, the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith said flat-out that the church couldn’t bless the unions of two men or two women because “God cannot bless sin.” That 2021 pronouncement created an outcry and appeared to have blindsided Francis, even though he had technically approved its publication. Soon after it was published, he removed the official responsible for it and set about laying the groundwork for a reversal. In the new document, the Vatican said the church must avoid “doctrinal or disciplinary schemes especially when they lead to a narcissistic and authoritarian elitism whereby instead of evangelizing, one analyses and classifies others." It said ultimately, a blessing is about helping people increase their trust in God. “It is a seed of the Holy Spirit that must be nurtured, not hindered,” it said. It stressed that people in “irregular” unions of extramarital sex — gay or straight — are in a state of sin. But it said that shouldn’t deprive them of God’s love or mercy. “Even when a person’s relationship with God is clouded by sin, he can always ask for a blessing, stretching out his hand to God,” the document said. “Thus, when people ask for a blessing, an exhaustive moral analysis should not be placed as a precondition for conferring it,” the document said. The Rev. James Martin, who advocates for a greater welcome for LGBTQ+ Catholics, praised the new document as a “huge step forward” and a “dramatic shift” from the Vatican's 2021 policy. “Along with many Catholic priests, I will now be delighted to bless my friends in same-sex marriages,” he said in an email. Traditionalists, however, were outraged. The traditionalist blogger Luigi Casalini of Messa in Latino (Latin Mass) blog wrote that the document appeared to be a form of heresy.

University of Notre Dame theologian Ulrich Lehner was also concerned, saying it would merely sow confusion and could lead to division in the church. “The Vatican’s statement is, in my view, the most unfortunate public announcement in decades,” he said in a statement. “Moreover, some bishops will use it as a pretext to do what the document explicitly forbids, especially since the Vatican has not stopped them before. It is — and I hate to say it — an invitation to schism.” Ramón Gómez, in charge of human rights for the Movement for Homosexual Integration and Liberation group in Chile, said the statement was a step toward breaking down discrimination in the church and could help LGBTQ+ people in countries where even civil unions aren't legal. But he said the document was “belated” and “contradictory" in specifying a non-ritualised blessing that cannot be confused with marriage. Such a mixed message, he said, “thus once again gives the signal that same-sex couples are inferior to heterosexual couples.” The Vatican admonition to refrain from codifying any blessing or prayer appeared to be a

response to Flemish-speaking bishops in Belgium, who last year proposed the text for a prayer for same-sex couples that included prayers, Scriptural readings and expressions of commitment. In Germany, individual priests have been blessing same-sex couples for years, as part of a progressive trend in the German church. In September, several Catholic priests held a ceremony blessing same-sex couples outside Cologne Cathedral to protest the city’s conservative archbishop, Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki.

The head of the German Bishops Conference welcomed the document. “This means that a blessing can be given to couples who do not have the opportunity to marry in church, for example due to divorce, and to same-sex couples,” Bishop Georg Baetzing said in a statement. “The practice of the church knows a variety of forms of blessing. It is good that this treasure for the diversity of lifestyles is now being raised.” In the United States, the Rev. John Oesterle, a Catholic priest and hospital chaplain in

Pittsburgh, said many priests would probably not be open to offering such a blessing, but he welcomed Francis’ action. “I think the pope has learned to accept people as God made them,” he said on Monday. “When I was growing up, the assumption was that God made everyone straight. What we have learned is that is not true. In accepting people as God made them, and if Jesus’ primary teaching is we should love and serve one another in the community, I think that’s what gives Pope Francis the openness to God’s presence in those relationships.” The Church of England on Sunday announced a similar move allowing clergy to bless the unions of same-sex couples who have had civil weddings or partnerships, but it still bans church weddings for same-sex couples.

“Saviour” production sends powerful message By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net

A

FTER successfully staging their Winter production “Saviour” last weekend, Samita Ferguson and the team at the Church of God of Prophecy Love Centre hope to host an encore presentation next month. Presented by The Church of God of Prophecy Love Centre, under the creative direction and production of Mrs Ferguson, the play puts a spotlight on Christ mankind’s redeeming Saviour in all areas of life. Mrs Ferguson, who has been the creative mind behind dozens of Winter productions, said reminding people of how Christ can be a saviour for them was of utmost importance. “ ‘Saviour’ was inspired by the ongoing concerns and traumatic experiences that individuals are facing and have faced. In this period in which we live, people have to realise that no matter what dilemmas or circumstances they face, there is still a saviour who redeems and delivers and brings liberty. He is still Emmanuel; this saviour is still a comforter and the prince of peace,” she said. Like with the original staging, the encore performance will offer songs of hope, music to inspire and dramas to uplift. “There are two plays in one. One of the plays’ plots showcases a young man who does not believe in Christmas. Will he overcome through words of counsel or will he fall short due to anger and pain? “The adult play speaks to real life stories that people face. These stories share the essence of what it takes to overcome and not succumb to the tests and tribulations of life,” she said. And both plays, Mrs Ferguson said, address various concepts and themes she knew would resonate with audiences.

“The themes that come to life are: How one feels when 'life happens'. In reality, when 'life happens' to anyone there is a tendency to cave in and throw in the towel. Life can be a job loss, a family member’s death, and the list can go on and on,” she said. “Despite the hiccups of life, constant prayer, faith, and even seeking wise counsel can aid in the trajectory of change. These stories will unfold; the ingredients of what happens when ones paradigms shifts and positive results transpire as a result of 'the shift'. The dramas are knitted with hope, forgiveness, love, building a positive community of faith,” she told Tribune Religion. While there are many life lessons to be learned from the plays, the resounding message is for audiences to believe in Christ. “Believe in a saviour who is able to break barriers and to deliver one from hopelessness and pain. The year is drawing

to an end fast, people must realise that all is not lost and that everything will be all right once they believe; most in important once they have a mindset to 'shift'.” Mrs Ferguson said she will continue walking in her purpose as she has seen her work impact many lives. “I have been witness to individuals who have shared their story and revealed how the plays have brought redemption, deliverance, and how they caused them to change the negative trajectory of life that they were travelling. The plays have all brought healing and hope,” she said. “Additionally, persons who never once dreamed of acting have embraced the stage and tapped into a craft that either was dormant or they never knew was inside of them. The plays have boosted individual confidence. I believe that the arts is a vital part of evangelising our community.”
