“WATCHING” THE NIGHT INTO A NEW YEAR By ALESHA CADET Tribune Features Writer acadet@tribunemedia.net
T
HERE are many Bahamians who grew up in Christian homes that never had to guess where they would be spending their New Year’s Eve.
The answer to that would always be in church, for the watch night service. Even if only for the final hour of the old year, some Christians like to take the time to spend with family and friends during a church service to reflect on the past 12 months and prepare for the next year. Tribune Religion asked a number of readers to share their watch night service experiences with us: “Even if I don’t physically attend, because thankfully a lot of churches have evolved into streaming their services live, I am going to be virtually viewing a watch night service in the effort to bring in the new year with some good old praise and worship,” said Shenika Taylor. “I love the fancy dinners and parties, but there is something about a watch night service that brings me so much peace for the new year to come.” Alexis Rolle said she loves the balance of attending a watch night service and taking part in the more secular festivities afterwards.
“My church doesn’t usually host a watch night service, but I always find one that does. This year I’ll be attending one of the Catholic churches,” she said. “What I love about this service as well is walking into the church at 10pm and seeing the room jam-packed. That feeling is always the same for me: warm. I love seeing the number of people that make that kind of time to give God praise. Not saying you have to physically be in church to do this, but I just love experiencing it in person.” Amanda Nixon said for a very long time all she ever did for New Year’s Eve was attend a watch night service. “I mean, I had it so bad to the point where I was invited to
a wedding on New Year’s Eve and in the middle of the shindig I was watching my church’s service on my phone; I was tuned right in, multitasking. This is one tradition that I don’t mind being stuck on. It brings me joy,” she said. Minister Felicia Archer of Fresh Fire Ministries said she believes the term “watch night” has been misinterpreted by many. “When we hear the term ‘watch night’, people automatically assume it means to look out for the return of Jesus Christ or they think it is the ‘night’ He’s coming back. But watch night for people of faith simply means a time of coming
together to reflect, repent and renew,” she said. Minister Archer said for her life is an interesting mixture of good and bad, victories and defeats, successes and failures, pain and joy, and with every year that comes to an end, we get the opportunity to look back and evaluate. “It is a time to think about everything that you overcame, went through and conquered. It is also a celebratory service and one of thanksgiving. It represents a time of giving thanks to God for the gift of life, and for the victories you have won in the past year. The Psalmist David has declared, ‘Oh, give thanks unto the Lord for He is good’. It is during this time
of thanksgiving that we come into realisation that we never would have made it throughout the year without the provision, protection and grace of God almighty. It is a time to thank God for personal victories and cooperate victories,” she said. Minister Archer believes the watch night service is also a time of renewal and repentance of personal sins and shortcomings, and a time of renewing personal vows to the Lord. Her advice for those who have never attended a watch night service is to listen carefully to the word of the Lord, the instructions and directions from the speaker. According to the National Museum of African-American History and Culture, watch night or “Freedom’s Eve,” marks when African-Americans across the US watched and waited for the news of freedom. Today, watch night is an annual New Year’s Eve tradition that includes the memory of slavery and freedom, reflections on faith, and celebration of community and strength. A number of watch night services this Sunday include: Church of The Lord Jesu Temple’s “Transition 24”; Charisma Church’s “Charisma Night 2023” to feature Mr J, Unlimited Angel and Young Bubba; Freeport’s Calvary Temple’ “Watchman - What of the night 2024”, and Emerge Youth Church’s “Trusting The Process” watch night celebration to feature recording artist Nagia Sym.

In a troubled world, Christians strive to put aside earthly worries on Christmas Eve IRAQI Christians attend a Christmas mass at the Mother Teresa Catholic Church in Basra, Iraq, Sunday, December 24, 2023. Photo:Nabil al-Jurani/AP
By DAVID McHUGH, ABDUL RAHMAN SHAHEEN and SHAZIA BHATTI Associated Press CHRISTIANS around the world were striving on Christmas Eve to put aside the worries and fears of an unsettled, wartorn world as they prepared to celebrate the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. Before leading Sunday Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City, Cardinal Timothy Dolan reminded congregants to keep war-torn parts of the Middle East in their Christmas prayers. “As we anticipate Christmas, our hearts always go to the holy land,” he said, referring to parts of Israel and the Palestinian territories. “The holy land is under a cloud, the holy land is suffering, the holy land is filled with violence and hatred and retribution. And this dulls and threatens to suffocate the joy of Christmas.” Believers in Syria gathered in a country still suffering from the aftermath of a long civil war and suffocating economic blockade. Despite festive lights and Christmas decorations adorning houses and shopfronts in the capital Damascus, events in Gaza and ongoing battles in parts of the country have left the holiday atmosphere subdued. In Yabroud, a city north of Damascus, worshippers gathered in the St Constantine and Helen Cathedral to enjoy Christmas carols sung by the Joy Choir from Damascus. “Everyone should try, with what the Lord has given them, to spread joy in order to help end this sorrow,” said Fadi Homsi, a member of the choir. Prosperous, mostly secular Europe marked the holiday in historic cathedrals and brightly lit holiday markets, with an undertone of tension spread by the war in Gaza and by one
even closer to home in neighboring Ukraine. Wages that haven’t yet caught up with inflation dampened the mood during the pre-holiday shopping and dining season. Sightseeing-only visits were barred at Germany’s landmark cathedral in Cologne and Christmas Eve worshippers faced security checks to get into midnight Mass there Sunday as police responded to indications of a potential attack. Still, officials urged people not to shy away from holiday celebrations out of fear. Auxiliary Bishop Rolf Steinhaeuser greeted people attending services with a relaxed smile and an expression of thanks for police security efforts, a day after police descended on the cathedral and searched it with sniffer dogs. With several dozen officers on duty outside, he said it was “probably the
most secure church service in all of Germany.” In Austria, police said they also were stepping up security around Vienna’s churches and Christmas markets, apparently responding to the same intelligence about a potential threat. They did not give further information, but the dpa news agency reported without citing a source that the threat was from an Islamic extremist group. Cologne’s towering cathedral, whose twin spires rise 515 feet high, is a major tourist destination visited by some 6 million people a year. It is home to the Shrine of the Three Kings, a gold- and silver-decorated casket said to contain the relics of the wise men described in the New Testament as paying homage to the newborn Jesus. The European Union’s home affairs commissioner, Ylva Johansson, warned Dec. 5 that Europe faces a “huge risk
of terrorist attacks” over the Christmas holidays due to fallout from the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Johansson provided no details about any police or security information that might have led to her warning. Ukraine is preparing to officially mark Christmas as a state holiday on Dec. 25 for the first time after moving the date in line with countries in Western Europe. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed legislation in July moving the holiday to Dec. 25 from Jan. 7, when it is observed by the Russian Orthodox Church and also by one of Ukraine’s two competing Orthodox churches. Some Eastern Orthodox churches continue to use the ancient Julian calendar, under which Christmas falls 13 days later. A note attached to the law said its goal was to “abandon Russian heritage” and cited “the
desire of all Ukrainians to live their lives with their own traditions, holidays.” “The nights before Christmas are the longest of the year. However, the day has already begun to lengthen and the light has begun to prevail. The light grows stronger. Darkness will eventually lose. Evil will be defeated,” Zelenskyy said in a video address Sunday. In Pakistan’s eastern Punjab province, Christians whose homes were destroyed or damaged by a Muslim mob in August celebrated against a background of fear in the city of Jaranwala. Christians fled their homes to escape the attackers, returning to scenes of destruction. Jaranwala resident Ratan Bhatti said Christmas won’t be like it used to be. “Every house used to be illuminated, decorated with stars,” he said. “People are still in fear and grief. Our biggest church was burnt. It is difficult to forget that day.” The rampage was one of the most destructive attacks on Christians in Pakistan’s history and drew nationwide condemnation. The minority, who are among Pakistan’s poorest, face an increasingly intolerant atmosphere in the Muslim-majority nation where radical religious and sectarian groups have become more prominent. Local priest Khalid Mukhtar said people in Jaranwala had yet to emerge from their trauma. “We are yet to see the traditional spirit of Christmas. We are trying to motivate people to celebrate the festival with traditional fervor.” “We are determined to celebrate it,” Mukhtar added.

Gospel stars Tye Tribbett and Todd Galberth to appear at final POPP conference By JEFFARAH GIBSON Tribune Features Writer jgibson@tribunemedia.net AWARD-winning international gospel recording artist Tye Tribbett and his team, along with chart-topper Todd Galberth will make a special guest appearance at this year’s Power of Prayer & Praise Conference. The conference is a signature event for Southland Cathedral Global Ministries and the brainchild of Senior Pastor Devard Francis, who has fiery passion to see people reach new levels in their worship experience. The annual conference takes place from January 10 -14 and will be held under theme “The Power of the Promise". Those who wish to go higher in their praise and worship life
are encouraged to come out during the event as it will be “the last of its kind as we know it,” said Minister Cara Newton. According to Minister Newton, the event was conceptualised to reenergise, embolden, as well as empower those who may be feeling worn out in their faith. It’s for those who may have lost their gusto and need some help to keep going, she said. “Pastor Devard came up with the concept of POPP as a kingdom kickstart to the year. By the end of the year many are spiritually depleted, stressed or dealing with the burdens of life itself. This conference is geared towards reminding us of and exercising the power of prayer and praise.”
This year, POPP will feature the ministries of speakers like Bishop Lambert Gates from Indiana, Indianapolis; Pastor Tolan Morgan from Detroit, Michigan; Bishop Rudolph McKissick from Jacksonville, Florida, and Nassau's very own Bishop Delton Fernander and Apostle Raymond Wells. The Saturday midday session are aimed at music ministry leaders and workers, inclusive of worship leaders, praise teams, musicians, etcetera. The special guest presenter will be Minister Stephen Hurd from Washington, DC. There event will also feature a number of local and visiting psalmists who are known to “shift the atmosphere”, said Minister Newton.
Psalmists who will be participating in the free POPP conference nights are international gospel artists Le'Andria Johnson, Maranda Curtis, and Melvin Crispell III. The midnight “POPP-Up” opening night, which will take place at 11.30pm on January 9, will feature award-winning international gospel recording artists Tye Tribbett and Todd Galberth. Local artists include Bishop Simeon Outten, Pastor Oslien Jadorte, Minister Newton, Davian Chase, Southland Music, Colyn Kristopher, Rashad Lynes, Le'Andria Smith and others. “(This is) a great way for everyone to jump-start the year. POPP is about coming together to experience the power of
prayer and praise. So many testimonies have come out of past POPP conferences and with this finale, we're expecting even more,” said Minister Newton. “We hope that lives are saved and changed for the better; that many will come to know Christ, and those that do know Him, will do so on another level. We also hope that all will see and appreciate that a Christian conference of this magnitude can do wonders in fostering unity within not just the church community, but the nation, thus fostering change throughout the world.” The midnight POPP-Up opening is the only ticketed event. Tickets are $25 dollars in advance and $30 at the door. To register, email southlandcathedral@gmail.com.
