GET FAMILIAR WITH THE NEW DRESS CODE: by Danielle Raykhinshteyn Starting with the 2011-2012 school year, students will no longer be able to wear leggings to school without a shirt that is longer than their fingertips with their arms extended at their sides. The Troy Independent sat down with THS Principal Mark Dziatczak to find out exactly what this new policy means and why it was enacted. What I was most confused about is the fact that pants is in quotation marks in the registration packet. Can you explain that? What the new code of conduct says is that pants need to be worn to school. Where students may have, in the past, worn tights or leggings that some people call pants and others call tights or leggings, we were trying to make some kind of distinction. What about jeggings? I think based on what I know of them, if they’re worn in a manner where they look like tights but they’re just painted they’re probably not going to be appropriate. If they have actual pockets and they’re actual pants, then to me that’s fine. What about Hardtails? I don’t know the material. I’ll have to see a Hardtail for my own eyes and figure out what to do. I don’t really know.

STARTING OUT FRESH, MAN! Six tips for freshmen by Danielle Raykhinshteyn 1. Please avoid the main staircase. There are plenty of other staircases that are much more convenient and won’t cause the entire school to converge in a major traffic jam. 2. If you’re buying your lunch, get in line as fast as you can. I would recommend bringing your lunch for awhile. 3. THS is a square. If you go the wrong way, keep going and you’ll run into your classroom or a staircase soon enough. 4. If you don’t know where you’re going, ask a teacher.

They won’t laugh at you and you’ll look a lot smarter than if you’re wandering the halls aimlessly, looking scared. 5. Make sure you’re in the right class. Highlight your schedule for this semester if you have to, but don’t be that poor chap who walks into the wrong room five minutes late. 6. Girls, please put your makeup on at home. I really don’t need you all hogging the sinks when I actually went to the bathroom and need to wash my hands.

TROY CAN’T GET OFFENSE GOING, DROPS OPENER 16-3 By Jake Lourim Troy football coach Gary Griffith mentioned the old adage, “The game starts up front.” His Colts lost the battle up front, and lost the game. Romeo was stout defensively, avenging a 31-7 loss to Troy last year with a 16-3 win August 25. Offensive inconsistency plagued most of Troy’s possessions. The Colts’ first drive of the game went nine plays and 64 yards, but the drive stalled at the six. Sean Murphy booted a 23-yard field goal for the only points. The next series stalled at the 31. Romeo opened and closed the half with touchdown drives that totaled 20 plays and 129 yards. Troy tackling miscues extended the two series. “We didn’t [tackle them]. We didn’t wrap up,” Griffith said. Linebacker Jarrett Bochniak added that nerves were a factor.

The Troy Independent is growing in new ways this year, and we need your help! Danielle and Carolyn will be working on design and editing everyday in Ms. Vettraino’s 4th hour Yearbook class, and will also be running the club as an after school activity on Thursdays. We hope to print one issue a semester this year, and we need students join the staff and help make this happen! Anyone is welcome to apply to be a staffer; pick up an application in Ms. Vettraino’s room: 210.

PALETTE

“Troy can’t get offense going, drops opener 16-3” continued from page 1: Romeo averaged 6.9 yards per play on the two scoring drives. The Colts’ next series looked promising also, but after two third-down conversions, two incomplete passes and a three-yard run halted it. Another mistake followed shortly. Romeo had to punt on its next possession, but the kick went off Davion Rice and back into the Bulldogs’ hands. Junior quarterback Justin Losey had 100 total yards, 44 passing on eight throws and 56 rushing on eight carries. He was under duress all night long. Asked about motivation after a tough loss, Griffith said, “Show them the film. They’ll be scared to death. They’ll work hard.” Go to our website for full stories and up-to-date news, and visit our partner sports site for more in-depth coverage! www.thetroyindependent.org www.troycoltsportsupdate.com
