NEWS FROM ACROSS THE STATE
Campaign Launched for Chestnut Hill Farm Expansion Chestnut Hill Farm (CHF), a 131-acre historic farm property located in Southborough, is now poised for a dynamic expansion. Through the generosity of the Beals family—donors of the original farmland—Trustees now has the unique opportunity to add 39 additional acres to the farm at a greatly reduced cost, but will need the help of many more supporters to complete this vision. The additional acreage contains nearly six acres of USDA-defined prime agricultural soil, along with hay fields and woodland habitat. The expansion reconnects the farm’s original parcels, and will enable The Trustees to significantly increase its food production capabilities through the farm’s CSA and livestock programs—major factors in establishing a financially sustainable farm operation. Also part of the $400,000 farm expansion fundraising campaign are improvements
The Trustees has recently launched two exciting new exhibitions at Fruitlands Museum in Harvard, and a third will open in early November.

to the barnyard area and the construction of an engagement pavilion—both designed to provide for increased community involvement through programming for local residents and schools. “We are grateful for the generosity of the Beals family and other donors who have already stepped forward to launch this work, and we’re confident that other support will help us to protect this beautiful farm for the entire community to share,” says Barbara Erickson, Trustees President & CEO. “We look forward to the wonderful programs and exciting agricultural growth that this campaign will bring to Chestnut Hill Farm, and to its evolution as a robust contributor to the vitality of Southborough.” For more information, and to contribute to the fundraising effort, visit thetrustees.org/chf.

A New View: Landscapes from the Permanent Collection Now through March 2018
Celebrating 70 years since Clara Endicott Sears unveiled her newly acquired collection of 19th-century landscape paintings—many from Hudson River School artists—more than fifty works are shown in a salon-style setting, just as she first displayed them in 1947.
Artisans from the North Bennet Street School in Boston craft responses to classic furniture pieces from the collections of Trustees historic homes, in a side-by-side display to spotlight the dynamic convergence of the old and the new. Visit thetrustees.org/fruitlands for details and directions.
New Greenhouses Restore Horticultural Legacy at Naumkeag Forty-five years after collapsing under a snow load, Naumkeag’s greenhouse structures have been recreated and restored to functionality. Continuing the recent restoration efforts at the National Historic Landmark, the greenhouse project brings back a missing element to the landscape that celebrates the horticultural legacy of the Choate family, and will support The Trustees’ horticultural program into the future. The 19th-century greenhouses—which included several structures used for plant propagation, coldframes to extend the growing season, and an orangery that housed a peach tree—were a functional and aesthetically important part of the Naumkeag landscape. “We preserved and salvaged those elements of the original building that had survived,” said Bob Murray, The Trustees’ Structures & Landscapes Project Director. “We were able to mimic and reproduce many of the architectural details of the original buildings and incorporate them into the construction of two new greenhouses: the propagation house and the peach house.” The new buildings are more sustainable,

Mabel Choate had a passion for horticultural experimentation at Naumkeag. The new greenhouse facility allows Trustees horticulturists to continue that tradition by overwintering tender plants, providing a much broader plant palette to work with.
as well, taking advantage of modern materials and technology, such as aluminum construction for strength, and radiant heat and low-e glass for greater energy efficiency. “We are bringing back a key element to the landscape that was an integral part of the Choate family’s life here at Naumkeag,” says General Manager for the Southern Berkshires
Brian Cruey. “And in addition to helping support our horticultural needs, these structures will also create opportunities for engaging our visitors with exciting new programming.” For more on this restoration project, visit thetrustees.org/naumkeag.
In a new measure aimed at providing increased access to locally-grown foods, sustainably-raised, grass-fed and pastured meats from Trustees farms will be available, starting in November, through The Trustees’ Meat Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. Expanding on inaugural season offerings, this year’s Meat CSA will include lamb in addition to beef, pork, and chicken. As it is with the vegetable CSA program, CSA members share in the bounty of meats produced on five Trustees farms—Appleton Farms in Hamilton & Ipswich, Chestnut Hill Farm in Southborough, Moose Hill Farm in Sharon, Powisset Farm in Dover, and Weir River Farm in Hingham. Top-quality livestock are raised on the preserved open pastures and oak forests of Trustees farms, which focus on sustainable practices and public benefits like recreational access and ecological stewardship. Meats are selected by CSA staff to encourage members to explore new cuts, flavors, and recipes on top of anticipated favorites. And most importantly, membership in the Meat CSA helps support Trustees farms and a strong local food system. Learn more at thetrustees.org/meatcsa.

Things To Do
Coastal Focus
Two iconic properties celebrate 50th Anniversaries The Trustees welcomes all to our places. They were protected with a greater good in mind by our forefathers and all those volunteers, staff, and governance members who came before us. Each place has a story of some higher intention—to protect a natural or cultural resource, and always with the public’s interest in mind. It’s a balance that requires thought, strategy, and resources. We also have been able to make most of our places open for free to all from sunrise to sunset. But we must go further. This fall marks the 50th anniversary of protecting two of our most iconic places—World’s End in Hingham and Wasque on Martha’s Vineyard. These two waterfront reservations are different in many ways but share one special connection. They were both saved by large community uprisings rather than one or two major donors. This was the first time in our history that this sort of grassroots effort helped us to acquire an important new property. We have had major celebrations in both communities this summer and have witnessed that the passion from 50 years ago lives on in the neighbors and visitors who love these places still. The stories of Wasque and World’s End also represented a new day in conservation—a time when these sorts of acquisitions required a multi-pronged approach involving many voices and many sources of dollars. This was what Charles Eliot always imagined when he created an organization founded with public “trustees” as a core part of its DNA and in its name. He couldn’t have imagined how complex the world would become. Today, we see the great jeopardy of public good along the Boston waterfront. Open space is being gobbled up, public access cut off, and coastal vulnerability is being ignored. Fortunately, there are many voices around the table talking about this important issue, fighting for open space for all and standing up for a greater good that can live on into the future. We are glad that you are with us in this conversation. ES

Bringing Farm Fresh Food to Communities that Need It

THE TRUSTEES
BY GENEVIEVE RAJEWSKI t’s a Tuesday in early August, and the recently launched Trustees Mobile Farmers Market is already satisfying a large appetite for its locally-grown produce, meat, eggs, and milk. The truck has sold out of tomatoes by the time it reaches the ABCD Head Start in Dorchester, its second stop of the day, even after Cathy Wirth, Agriculture Program Director at The Trustees, has already run back to Powisset Farm in Dover for extra produce to replenish the baskets. Sadrack Marseille, the market’s Outreach Assistant and a graduate of The Trustees Youth Conservation Corps job-training program, hastily updates the market’s colorful chalkboard.

REACHING OUT Though a new sight on city streets, the Mobile Farmers Market has been in the works for years, according to Wirth. The Trustees’ seven working farms produce vegetables, cheese, milk, meat, and eggs—most of which is sold right on the properties. “It’s a great way to personally connect people to our mission of land conservation,” explains Wirth. “But that also means that we are mainly providing food to residents of the communities that surround those properties. We wanted our food to have a broader reach.” Aiming to make farm-fresh food available to families who face economic or transportation barriers to accessing healthy food, The Trustees set its sights on bringing produce to underserved neighborhoods around Boston. Funds were secured to outfit a truck and staff a pilot season—thanks to a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)—and Trustees worked with two key partners to bring the project to fruition: Fresh Truck, the city’s first mobile market, and the Boston Public Market. As the USDA funding only supports the pilot, which ends November 4, Wirth notes that The Trustees

“Locally grown fare can get everybody excited about fresh foods and the farms they come from.” Cathy Wirth, Agriculture Program Director THE TRUSTEES is actively seeking sustaining funds to continue the mobile market in the future. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION Designed like a food truck—with a large window that customers step up to in order to check out and buy the locally-grown food— the Trustees Mobile Farmers Market stops every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at locations in the Dorchester and Roxbury neighborhoods of Boston. The project launched in July and will continue through the end of the Massachusetts growing season in early November. Fresh Truck helped The Trustees navigate the permitting and design processes. “We also made sure our stops aren’t redundant with theirs, so that we are serving places they can’t—and vice versa,” notes Wirth. “There’s certainly more need than any one organization can fill.” When it came to where to schedule stops for the Mobile Farmers Market, Wirth and her team looked for Boston neighborhoods where data showed residents are not spending their food dollars at supermarkets—suggesting that they lack convenient or affordable full-service shopping options and are opting for alternative locations such as convenience stores, bodegas, gas stations, and fast food restaurants. “These are also neighborhoods where public health data reveal high rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure—all diseases tied to poor nutrition,” she adds. Within these neighborhoods, they built relationships with community partners that are already integrated

into people’s daily routines and that include healthy eating and wellness as part of their mission. The result is weekly mobile market stops at three health centers, a YMCA, and today’s Head Start location. Caring for more than 400 children aged six weeks to five years old, the Dorchester ABCD Head Start provides breakfast, lunch, and a snack five days a week—“all fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, and lean meats— things these kids may not get at home,” says Program Director Catherine Moran. In addition to involving the children in tending a garden of vegetables and herbs to later harvest and try at home with their families, “a nutritionist meets with all our parents individually to help them create healthier eating habits,” says Moran. “This truck coming in really helps parents be able to follow through.” Moran adds that the Trustees Mobile Farmers Market is also great for the surrounding community. “There’s elderly housing behind our building, and those residents shop here. People notice the truck while walking by and come on over and get exposed to something new.” Such is the case for Erika Hendricks of Dorchester, who is shopping here today for the first time after noticing the market while visiting the Head Start with her 23-year-old daughter. “I’m not a big vegetable eater. I usually only cook a bag of frozen stuff here and there,” says Hendricks. “I’ve never seen that kind of squash before,” she says, pointing to a basket full of button squash
on the truck. Allison Pekel, The Trustees’ Mobile Market Manager, slices open one of the little yellow squashes for Hendricks to inspect, noting that it tastes just like a summer squash, but the texture is a little firmer. “I think I’ll try it,” says Hendricks. FRESH FOR LESS The produce available on the truck— which comes from The Trustees’ Powisset Farm in Dover, less than 15 miles from the Dorchester ABCD Head Start—changes according to what’s in season. “Powisset Farm Manager Zannah Porter does a crop walk every day to pick out what she thinks is ready to harvest,” says Pekel. The truck also sells fresh milk from Appleton Farms in Hamilton and Ipswich, and meat and eggs from Moose Hill Farm in Sharon and Weir River Farm in Hingham. Financial accessibility was another priority in planning the Mobile Farmers Market. “We strive to offer a diverse product mix while maintaining affordability for customers in lower-income neighborhoods,” says Wirth. As a nonprofit that produces its own food, The Trustees can set its prices at levels that are not out of reach for customers on tight food budgets. Wirth and her team also work with other area farms to bring in popular items that Trustees farms don’t grow, such as fruit and corn, to sell at cost. “Everyone has been asking for corn, and we are excited to be making it available starting this week.”
©M. GARDNER
BUILDING EXCITEMENT When today’s market is about halfway over, Wirth spots a familiar face: Ruth Tweedy, who regularly travels 90 minutes by bus from a Cambridge shelter to shop at the Mobile Farmers Market. “We saved you some peaches!” Wirth cries to Tweedy, who first learned of the mobile market from an article in the Metro. After asking Wirth about which Cambridge farmers markets also participate in the HIP program, and jotting down their days and locations, the elderly woman departs with a couple of peaches, some carrots and green peppers. “There’s a perception that the local food movement can be elitist because only certain people can participate in it,” notes Wirth. “We need to change that. Locally grown fare can get everybody excited about fresh foods and the farms they come from.” Given the excitement greeting the seasonal bounty on display here today, it’s clear that enjoying healthy, farm-fresh foods knows no boundaries. Genevieve Rajewski is a Boston-based freelance writer who covers nature, animals, food, and science.
©M. GARDNER
In addition, “we worked very hard to partner with every program out there that makes fresh food more affordable,” continues Wirth. The truck accepts cash, credit, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as food stamps), and WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program coupons. It also is participating in the pilot year of Massachusetts’ new Healthy Incentives Program (HIP). Depending on family size, HIP credits SNAP recipients with from $40 to $80 a month towards local vegetable and fruit purchases made at participating farmers markets, farm stands, community supported agriculture shares (CSAs), or mobile markets. “Essentially the HIP program allows SNAP recipients to get local produce for free, because qualifying purchases are immediately reimbursed.” According to Pekel, the truck seems to be serving the population that The Trustees is hoping to reach. “The majority of our purchases are paid for with SNAP, HIP, WIC and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program coupons, or cash,” she says, “and we see a lot of repeat customers.”

FREE DAYS FOR FALL FUN Following a tradition started last year for our 125th Anniversary, Trustees is offering three special free entry days this fall. On Columbus Day (Monday, October 9), admission to Trustees cultural properties— Castle Hill on the Crane Estate in Ipswich, The Stevens-Coolidge Place in Andover, The Old Manse in Concord, the Eleanor Cabot Bradley Estate in Canton, Naumkeag in Stockbridge, and the William Cullen Bryant Homestead in Cummington—is free for residents of the counties those properties are in. On Veteran’s Day (observed Friday, November 10), admission to Trustees cultural properties is free to veterans, active and retired military, and their families. And back by popular demand, on “Green” Friday (November 24, the day after Thanksgiving), The Trustees also offers free entry to all at outdoor properties that normally charge admission or parking fees. Skip the shopping and #OptOutside with family and friends! And, many reservations—such as Appleton Farms in Hamilton & Ipswich, Fruitlands Museum in Harvard, and Notchview in Windsor—are offering special programming on these free days. You’ll be getting a whole lot more than you pay for at these special places across the state!

HALLOWEEN HAUNTINGS The Trustees has been offering kid-friendly Halloween events for years, like Weir River Farm in Hingham’s Boo in the Barnyard (Saturday, October 28) and Trick or Treat on the Farm at Appleton Farms in Hamilton & Ipswich (Sunday, October 29), and we now have even more for grown-ups too: Halloween at the Great House at Castle Hill in Ipswich (Saturday, October 28) with 1920s and 30s attire encouraged, plus cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, will spice up your ghastly, ghostly holiday. Both Naumkeag in Stockbridge and the William Cullen Bryant Homestead in Cummington offer a Haunted House for the two weekends leading up to Halloween, and Castle Hill has a Haunted Hike on Halloween itself. Don’t miss
Hillside Halloween at Fruitlands Museum in Harvard (Saturday & Sunday, October 28 & 29) for trick or treating at each museum building, a Howling Halloween Harvest Bonfire at the Bradley Estate in Canton, Halloween Fun at Long Point on Martha’s Vineyard, or get in some exercise and race in costume at Rocky Woods’ second annual Monster Dash 5K & Trick or Trot! This year you can even extend the spooky-ness season with Live Action Clue at Naumkeag (Friday & Saturday, November 10 & 11). starting with none other than Castle Hill on the Crane Estate in Ipswich. Christmas at Castle Hill: The Season of Carols is this year’s entry in the holiday tradition at the Great House—each room in the 1920s mansion is festively decorated around a beloved Christmas carol. You’ll find live music and dance, fresh baked cookies and cider, a treasure hunt, family activities, and even a visit with Santa (Friday-Sunday, December 1-3). Not to be outdone, the Eleanor Cabot Bradley Estate in Canton brings back its popular Holly Daze with evening laser light shows and music, and weekend open house events filled with seasonal garden decorations, games, hot drinks and festive cookies (WednesdaysSundays, December 6-17). Whether you tour the winter gardens at The Stevens-Coolidge Place in North Andover as they twinkle and glow during Illumination Nights (FridaysSundays, December 8-23,) travel back in time and experience An Old-Fashioned Christmas at the William Cullen Bryant Homestead in Cummington (Saturday & Sunday, December 16 & 17, and Friday & Saturday, December 22 & 23), or hop on a unique winter wonderland lighthouse tour (keep your eyes peeled for snowy owls!) at Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge on Martha’s Vineyard (Saturday & Sunday, December 9 & 10)—you’re sure to create unforgettable holiday experiences your family will remember for years to come. THE SOLSTICE WITH THE MOST-EST Even on the shortest day of the year (Thursday, December 21) Trustees special places are abuzz with things to do. Nick Black MANAGING DIRECTOR OF THE BOSTON WATERFRONT INITIATIVE
Share the Trustees’ waterfront vision and organizational expertise with the Boston and Greater Boston communities, and work with local leaders, elected officials, partner organizations, and private industry to begin taking the many numerous steps that have to happen in order to bring this open space vision to reality. Community outreach and working with partners are the first critical elements. Can you give us a sneak peek into your plans? This is going to be an extremely challenging, many-year task. But we’ve made a ton of progress recently, and things are starting to line up that will demonstrate our commitment to seeing this project through for everyone involved. We are currently in the process of selecting and securing at least one site (or possibly more), and then the hard work of design, permitting, and raising funds to pay for it all begins. If we’re really successful, it’ll be very exciting for folks to begin to see physical progress on the waterfront, in the next year or two, as the brand new park(s) begins to take shape. What does the future hold?
©M. GARDNER
eet Nick Black, The Trustees’ Managing Director of the Boston Waterfront Initiative, who took on this new position with the organization less than two months ago. Nick is responsible for managing the implementation of the Trustees plans for establishing new, world-class public open space amid the rapidly rising office towers along the City’s waterfront, and for developing the partnerships with private, nonprofit, and governmental entities that are required to facilitate such parkbuilding efforts. Tell us about your professional roots.
What brought you to The Trustees?
I have been involved in politics, nonprofit advocacy, and community organizing for more than a decade. I worked on Elizabeth Warren’s campaign for U.S. Senate, then served as Special Assistant to Senator Warren, and ultimately joined Hilary Clinton’s presidential campaign as MA State Director for the general election portion of the race.
My wife and I moved to Massachusetts six years ago—she’s a Marshfield native, so the South Shore was a natural fit for us. We started frequenting World’s End and became Trustees members. Then, just as discussions around this position started up, I saw the front-page article in the Globe about the Trustees plans and that sealed it!
Our goal is to bring about innovative design that is responsive to not only the needs of the whole Boston community but also one that has an eye toward safeguarding the city against the effects of climate change. It’s our responsibility to do whatever we can to lend our expertise in order to find ways to create valuable space that enhances the city as a whole—what we do will be done for and with all the people of Boston. We have the incredible opportunity to bring about something that will leave a lasting impact on the city for generations to come. What gives you the biggest thrill in your work? I’m a problem solver by nature. I love challenges that are messy—tough problems that require creative thinking motivate me. Working with an organization that has, and is supported by, so many innovative thinkers is a great opportunity to test those skills.

When does a walk in the woods become a hike? Answer: It doesn’t matter. If you’re traveling by foot through the natural world, you are experiencing the joys—and innumerable health benefits—of hiking, regardless of how far you go or how difficult (or easy) the terrain.
“A hike is whatever you want to make it,” explains Brian Westrick, Trails Team Manager for The Trustees. “It can be as big or as small or as long as you want it to be.” SO GOOD, SO GOOD Regardless of the adventure you choose, hitting the trails is an exceptional way to improve your health. “There is no better way to maintain your long-term health and longevity than exercise,” says Dr. Aaron Baggish, director of the Cardiovascular Performance Program at Massachusetts General

Hospital. “And there’s nothing better than hiking to do it.” Importantly, Dr. Baggish points out that you don’t need to hike all day to improve your health. “It turns out that 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week is the sweet spot for maximizing health, including reductions in heart disease, improved cardiovascular health, and a lower risk for cancer,” he explains. What’s more, hiking has a leg up over other forms of exercise. “Hiking lets you reap the benefits of improved aerobic fitness, flexibility, strength, and balance,”
©J. MONKMAN
Dr. Baggish notes. “Moving back and forth over uneven terrain, constantly adjusting your stride length, these really engage all of your muscles in a way that gym machines don’t.” There’s no real downside to a more substantial hike either. “Once you go past 150 minutes, you very quickly start to improve your fitness and endurance,” Dr. Baggish adds. “If that’s what you’re after, going longer and harder makes sense.” Finally, hiking offers something else, something beyond the physical. “There’s the mental benefits,” Dr. Baggish notes. “Being in the natural environment, unplugging from the electronic barrage we all contend with, experiencing and smelling the fresh air, interacting socially with other people rather than with our devices—the list of why hiking is ideal is long and compelling.” TAKE THE CHALLENGE Whatever your hiking preference—whether it’s a stroll on wide level paths through lush woods or a climb on steep single-track trails to a rocky summit—you can find it on a Trustees property. With more than 350 miles of trails weaving through 116 properties across the state, your options are almost endless. No matter where you are in Massachusetts, a Trustees property awaits nearby. If you are looking for a longer hike—and are keen on exploring some of the Trustees’ lesser visited properties—Westrick encourages people to visit the central part of the state. “One of my favorite destinations is Petersham, to our Brooks Woodland Preserve and Swift River Reservation,” he notes, highlighting the properties’ exceptional natural diversity and more than 20 miles of trails.
©T. KATES
Healthful fall hikes can be found all over the state, like these at Noon Hill in Medfield (opposite page), and clockwise from above left, Ward Reservation in Andover & North Andover, Signal Hill in Canton, and Peaked Mountain in Monson.
©S. FRATONI
“Plus the town itself is a great place to visit, a really quaint community with a nice general store.” Also in the region are Mount Warner in Hamden, which features a 500-foot hill overlooking the Connecticut River Valley; and Peaked Mountain in Monson, which offers a sweeping summit view that extends from Mount Wachusett to the Green Mountains of Vermont. Both offer excellent hiking opportunities. For additional motivation, you can consider taking part in the Hike 125 Challenge, which The Trustees launched last year as part of its 125th Anniversary celebration. The goal is all but selfexplanatory: Hike 125 miles on Trustees properties by the end of the calendar year. “The Hike 125 Challenge has been really popular, really successful,” Westrick recounts. “It encourages people to explore
more deeply their own local properties or get excited to explore other properties they haven’t been to.” One of the keys to getting started, Westrick notes, is to not fixate on the end number. “Hiking 125 miles may sound like a lot, but once you start, the next big milestone—10 miles, 25 miles, 50 miles—is never too far out of reach and helps keep people going.” Regardless of where you’re headed, or how many miles you hope to rack up, Westrick reminds you to always remember one crucial item: a map of the property. “Getting lost can quickly become a bad experience,” reminds Westrick, “especially if you’re out as a family.” To stay on course, print a map out at home before you go (trail maps are available online for almost all Trustees reservations or download the GoTrustees app for your mobile device, which includes trails mapped out over satellite imagery for most properties. “A hike is an accomplishment,” Westrick concludes. “Never minimize that, no matter how small or big your adventure might be.” So hit the trails—fall brings ideal hiking weather. Your mind and your body will thank you. Matt Heid is a freelance writer whose work appears regularly in AMC Outdoors. He is also the author of AMC’s Best Backpacking in New England.

EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR
Garden Master Growing up in Salem, Jeremy Dick, The Trustees’ Stewardship Manager for the Boston Community Gardens, often scrambled through a local arboretum and a nearby cemetery—exploring, playing, encountering turtles, plants, and trees. His love of the outdoors led to horticulture study at UNH and the Arnold Arboretum, and ultimately landed Jeremy with the Boston Natural Areas Network (BNAN) just as its partnership with The Trustees began. First creating a native plant nursery at the fledgling City Natives in Mattapan, he soon began managing BNAN’s nearly 35 (at the time) community gardens. Nowadays, with 56 gardens in Dorchester, Jamaica Plain, and the South End to manage, our 2017 Employee of the Year works tirelessly to make sure the gardens are well maintained and sustainable, all the while striving to bolster the social fabric within each garden community. “Jeremy is a model for stewardship, building exemplary community outreach,” says Vidya Tikku, General Manager for the Boston Gardens. “He’s dependable, professional, and committed to excellence.” Half jokingly, Jeremy admits the most important part of his job is to make sure he regularly calls his 56 “other mothers”—the garden coordinators—to hear their concerns and make sure the gardeners’ needs are tended to. As he traverses the neighborhoods of Boston to visit 4 or 5 gardens on any given day, it seems Jeremy’s boyhood scrambles live on. ©TRUSTEES
