Preface “STREAM”, is a school magazine that tends to assist students at all levels of secondary education. It is the first try of our students. The main purpose of our magazine is to trigger and foster student’s assimilation and restitution of English as a foreign language. STREAM, as a crude attempt, invites you to have a look at the various activities; short stories, articles, dialogues, puzzles, proverbs… that stem from our students eagerness and interest to be high achievers. We, as teachers of English, would like to thank all the students who have contributed their skills to producing this work. Thanks are due in particular to some students who monitor and encourage their classmates to produce such work. As students, we would like to thank our school administration and teachers of English who piloted the manuscript and whose inciting remarks and feedback influenced positively the production of the magazine. We actually hope that this go will enhance students learning skills towards better achievements in both fluency and accuracy. Teachers: Sahbi Bouazizi. Sihem Amri. Fatma Baraketi. Basma Jellali. SAVE ME

Land, air and water: rescue us majesty king. The king: what is the matter? Land, air and water: save us from those who endanger our life. The king: just one moment. Speak one by one. You, the earth, you can begin. The earth: oh! Majesty king, I die day after day The king: how does that happen? The earth: first, people cut my hands. They were green and beautiful. My trees were green and my flowers used to have good smell, too. Today, my hands become dry and yellow. People burn and cut my trees.

3

They throw piles of garbage and dump waste discharges everywhere. They do not hesitate to harm me. So, my dear king, how dare they reap and eat my fruits? The air: could I speak now? The king: yes, what is the matter with you?

The air: oh! Majesty I am suffo……cated. I cannot brea………………………, breathe well. The king: why? The air: because the atmosphere is full of fumes coming from big factories and companies which are located everywhere.

4

Also many and many people still do not respect the law. so,I beg your majesty to save me. I am so filthy and dirty.

The king: and you, what is your problem?

The water: our majesty, as you know, I am veryimportant in life and necessary for the existence of all creatures, so it is very urgent to save me from dirt, dust and overconsumption

Dear Universe,

I am the king. I will beg your help because your life is in danger. You are invited to respect the environment. You should save the earth by collecting garbages, planting plenty of trees and flowers, and organising your life for better environment. You mustn’t log trees and you should not threaten animals’ habitat. As far as air is concerned, there is the so-called air pollution. It has negative effects on people’s health. For example, it causes asthma and breathing problemse. We are invited to save water because it is very important in the life of people.

Good bye. Guedri Amel: (1- S- 3)

Familiar Proverbs Man propeses and God disposes.

Like mother like daughter.

Haste is of devil.

If speech is silver, silence is gold.

An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.

Cleanliness is next to godliness.

A friend in need is a friend indeed.

Birds of feather flock together.

Eectronic Learning Eectronic

learning

has

both

advantages

and

drawbacks. To begin with,it can save time, get rid of class problems and provide more information. Moreover, It is a means of relaxation and maintaining privacy. In addition, it is a means of knowledge. On the other hand, electronic learning is a source of laziness. Over and obove, it is very expensive. For example, students in developing countries cannot have access to it. Added to that, it is unhealthy and harmful for the eyes. Last but not least, electronic learning encourages joblessness and fosters addiction.

Parents and Children Parents and children should have a relationship that is based on love and respect. For example, children should respect the decisions of their parents. Moreover, it should be based on warmth, confidence, understanding and protection. For instance, parents should protect their children from diseases and troubles. In addition, relations between parents and children have to be built on guidance. Parents ought to guide their children to the right path. They should advise them. Last but not least, parents have to help their children in their education. Finally, parents and children should have a sound relationship based on love, protection and respect so as to avoid quarrel and conflicts. Yosra Bargougui (3A2)

The Handbag It was a cold dark evening and the streets were empty. There was a beautiful girl called Jennifer. She was wearing a raincoat because the weather was gusty and rainy.

suddenly, Jennifer heard footsteps behind her and when she turned and looked she saw a man running behind her and he was crying loudly:“Wait. Please, wait”. Jennifer was terrified and trembling from fear, thinking that he was going to kill or rape her. After that, she ran to the nearest door seeking for help. She shouting: “help, help”. While ringing the bell, a hand grapped her gently. She almost died out of fear and the blood clotted in her vains.

14

Next, she turned her head and said with a loud sound full of fright “ leave me alone. What do you want?” “Do not worry! You have left your handbag in the train”, explained the man gently. “I am so sorry. I did not mean to frighten you”. Finally, Jennifer thanked him deeply saying, ”it is very kind of you. Sorry for the confusion. Good bye” .

THE SHEPHERD AND THE WOLF It was a nice day. The weather was very hot. There was a shepherd called Peter. He was wearing a blue pullover, a brown jacket and purple trousers. In the afternoon, Peter left his house towards the mountain with his dog to hunt.

When he arrived at that place, he was controlling his sheep with a big concentration. After that, he felt tired. He thought of a nap. So, he began to cry: A wolf! A wolf!

Thereafter, people came quickly with many canes to help the shepherd. They were trembling out of fear, but when they arrived at the place, they found him laughing.

16

So, they were very angry because they did not find the wolf. Peter lied to them. After that, they left that place but Peter stayed alone in that terrifying mountain.

Suddenly, Peter saw a big wolf. He was frightened and started crying loudly “a wolf! A wolf! But nobody come to him thinking that he was kidding.

Finally, Peter was attacked by the wolf.

Do not smoke One day, Peter asked his father. “Why do you smoke?” The father answered: “Smoking relieves my nerves”. The son said. “No, dad. I know that smoking is a bad habit. It does not relieve nerves. However, it contracts them. Besides, smoking obstructs the tracheas at the two lungs. It also causes cancer”. The father said: “I have been smoking since my early youth. In addition, my health is good”. The son: “However, when you climb the stairs, you puff and stop for some moments to relax and to withdraw your breaths”. The father: “I think that it is the result of old age”. The son: “No, it is really the result of smoking”. The father: “You are right. But what shall I do?” Without thinking, Peter said. “Avoid smoking and do not forget to practise sport regularly”.

Let’s read the story

The Grill Balcony

Wahid is an 8-year old boy who dwells with his family in a building composed of seven floors. His father is a teacher while his mother is a housekeeper. Wahid does not play with others because his mother does not like him to go out to play. All the boys of the village enjoy their life. They cry, play and laugh… except Wahid. Therefore, he feels that he is lonely and solitary. So, he wants to get rid of loneliness and the oppression. He also wants - like all the boys – to play with his friends. However, he knows that if he disobeys his mother, he will not be allowed to visit his grandparents who live in the countryside the next Sunday and he is waiting for this day with impatience. The day of the visit arrives; Wahid is very happy because he will meet his grandparents and enjoy his liberty. He plays with his relatives and with animals, too. In the evening, Wahid goes back home, feeling tired after a long day of kidding, cheerfulness and amusement.

Cloning The topic: Is cloning humans allowed? Why? Why not?

Human cloning is the creation of a genetically identical copy which is a modern medical process that aroused worldwide interest and concern because of its scientific and ethical implications. The possibility of human cloning became serious when Scottish scientists at Roslin Institute created the much celebrated sheep “Dolly. But human beings are not on this matter able to decide what is licit and illicit. The admission of the cloning encounters several obstacles, including the principle of the respect of life; the Muslim authors are not unanimous on whether or not it is acceptaple. Cloning is immoral and against our religion and the diversity of the species stated by Koran. I think that technology is good, but it must not fall in the wrong hands.

Writing attempts Delivering a speech: 1) We are talking to all people; all children in the world, without exception. We try our best to be the world changers and to challenge all the difficulties that we can face. Our Organization tries to reduce deaths resulting from hunger, to limit famine and to provide needy children with food, drinks and medicine and all other fundamental rights. We will try our best to help them as much as we can. You know “no pain no gain”. Therefore, we are in need of your immediate help; you have to support us with anything you can give to miserable children. It is shameful to let them die. Therefore, you have to be aware of the fact that these can be your children. It is unfair to let them die. 2) We are a humanitarian organization, which defends child rights. We really feel responsible for them; That’s why we try our best to reduce deaths from hunger and provide needy children with food, drinks and medicine. In fact, we are struggling all over the world to provide them with what they need. But, we can’t continue alone; that’s why we are addressing rich people to share with us this responsibility because we really need your help. So, let’s help them because it’s unfair to let them die. 3) India is one of the countries in the world that suffers from diseases because of overpopulation. Let us together send our donations to those needy children who are attacked by many diseases such as tuberculosis. With ₤ 15, you can make a difference. It is only possible with your help and generous acts. Please, try to give a hand to those children. They need your donation so much. They cannot live without your efforts. Please, give them hope to live in cozy conditions. (4th form 1)
