Editorial

Eunice Burton & Brian Buxton Guest Editors - TSJ Nos. 35 and 36

It was predicted in the last Tyndale Society Journal (No. 34, Spring 2008) that it would be a hard act to follow Valerie who, with the help of her invaluable assistant, Judith Munzinger, had been an outstanding editor for the previous seven years and so it has proved for your Guest Editors of this edition. Eunice’s background is in medicine and Brian’s in education and although we share a love of history we found that interest in a topic is inadequate preparation for a task involving more time and effort than initially envisaged! We responded to the challenge with enthusiasm, but inexperience, so we ask you to be indulgent. But do not let this deter the next people who will be invited to be possible guest editors – they will enjoy the work as they find the experience enlarges their knowledge, range of contacts and expertise. (Following the publication of Eunice Burton the last edition two further appreciations of Valerie were received from Ralph Werrell and Bill Cooper and slightly abridged versions of these are published under Letters). If there is a dominant theme it is Life in Tudor England, which is appropriate, as now is a time when exhibitions, conferences, books, popular films and television series, from David Starkey to The Other Boleyn Girl (some of doubtful authenticity), are concentrating on this period. So the main articles include lectures given at the Bristol conference in June by Ralph Werrell (Tyndale in Gloucestershire) and Brian Buxton (Sources of Confusion). However, pride of place must go to our Chairman Emeritus, Professor David Daniell, who has written the Introduction to a facsimile edition of Tyndale’s 1526 New Testament, produced this year by the British Library and Hendrickson Publishers of the USA. We reproduce this with our congratulations that his health has sufficiently recovered for him to be able to undertake this task. A strange coincidence occurred in that we noted three places where Tyndale has been commemorated in windows in the UK and the USA, hence A Trilogy : Tyndale in Stained Glass. Elaine Bishop’s contribution on the First Sussex Marian Martyrs suggests an

unusual reason for visiting that popular county. The article by Peter Raes A Tale to Tell reminds us that the sixteenth century Danish translation of the New Testament was published simultaneously with the works of Tyndale and Luther and that Cranach the Elder supplied woodcuts of King Christiern II for this. We have six Reports on events and conferences, from this Spring’s Cranach exhibition at the Royal Academy, London, to our own Tyndale Society events at Hertford College, Oxford, in May and at Trinity College, Bristol, in June. Our Chairman, Mary Clow, reports on the Merton Priory Commemoration Service and the conference at Liverpool Hope University in July entitled Tyndale, More and their Circles : Persecution and Martyrdom under the Tudors. We are grateful to John Flood for his account of the conference held at Oriel College, Oxford, in July on Lollard Affiliations : Historical, Literary and Theological which included speakers known to our society from past conferences. In Book Reviews the emphasis is again on Tudor England: aspects considered are authority and consent, privacy, the rise and fall of Thomas Cromwell and religion in the age of Shakespeare. Alister McGrath’s Christianity’s Dangerous Idea is reviewed by Margaret Clark and James Simpson’s Burning to Read by Neil Inglis. Both these books investigate the consequences of allowing the Bible to penetrate to a wide, critical public. Now an invitation to you, our members and readers, to respond to what is published in the Tyndale Society Journal with your own letters, comments or

short articles. Please inform us of events of interest to society members which you have attended or plan to attend and of relevant miscellanies suitable for Press Gleanings. We might even award a small literary prize for the most original contribution so please be alert as you read and travel! We were pleased to receive two such offerings from the USA for this edition and would welcome more. We look forward to the Lambeth Lecture on Wednesday September 24th by Dr. Rupert Sheldrake entitled Cosmic Evolution and Brian Buxton Continual Creativity, which should prove rd engrossing, and to the Hertford Tyndale Lecture on Thursday 23 October to be given by Professor John Craig on The English Reformation by the Book, 15361642. (see Dates for your Diary). Looking ahead to Christmas, reserve December 17th for the annual Carol Service and Christmas party with a surprise speaker, always a highlight in the seasonal calendar. Finally, may Tyndale’s example of perseverance and fortitude enable us to confront the challenge of a secular society, unaware of its needs and antagonistic to Biblical counsel.

Guest Editors for Tyndale Society Journal No.36: Eunice Burton & Brian Buxton

We invite your contributions for the next Journal by 15th December 2008 please.

A Portrait of Helen Martin e New Face of e Tyndale Society USA

Helen Martin first became deeply interested in Tyndale when she visited Vilvoorde, Belgium with her fellow Pennsylvanians, brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Bonnie Martin. After attending a Tyndale Society lecture at Hertford College, she went on to work with Mary Clow and Mary Miles to organize the Society’s Worcester Cathedral event in 2007. So enthusiastic is she about the growth of the Tyndale Society in the USA that she has recently taken over our administrative role in North America. Helen is very keen to promote the American arm of the Tyndale Society in her new capacity as our US Secretary/Treasurer. She hopes to be active in co-ordinating future Society events, where she can make contact with existing members and encourage many new ones. Helen’s academic background is in Mathematics and Science. She received her BA in Mathematics from The King’s College, NY and her M.Ed. in Physical Science from West Chester University, PA. She then went on to train as a high school Mathematics and Science teacher and completed further study in the USA, the UK, and Germany. Over the span of her 32-year teaching career, her hallmarks of ambition, energy and enthusiasm have proved infectious. She was one of the founders of the Satellites & Education Conference: her students built and ran a tracking station studying data from US and Russian satellites. Amongst many accolades, Helen has received the Business Week/Challenger Seven Fellowship Award for Innovation in Educational Technology and was named International Lecturer by the National Science Teachers’ Association. Her publications include articles in The Science Teacher, Journal of the American Scientific Affiliation, and The Christian Reader. These days, when not busy working for the Tyndale Society, Helen mentors teachers for Temple University. She also serves as a science consultant for a classical school and leads Bible study at the local YMCA.
