A Message from the Interim Superintendent of Schools Two weeks ago I walked into the CCSD office as the new Interim Superintendent of Schools. To be totally honest, it was a humbling experience to consider that I have been asked by the Board of Trustees to fill the position once occupied by Elmo Dericco and other fine leaders. As Dean of the Western Nevada Community College Fallon Campus, I often worked closely with superintendents but walked out of their office after business was done, not really knowing the day-to-day issues they were required to deal with. Now as I sit in their seat I have a newfound respect and admiration for them and the people around them.

I am looking forward to working on a day-to-day basis with teachers, staff and administrators who I have respected over the years. I also look forward to working with parents and community members who have as a high priority the education of the youth in our community. Finally, and most importantly, I am going to have the opportunity to have a real impact for good on the education of our children. I am most excited about that.

During these past two weeks, I have had a multitude of meetings with many employees learning about their jobs as I become more familiar with my own job. I have toured the new 6th grade wing at the Junior High School and the renovation project at the Old High School. I have become acquainted with each principal and experienced their pride as

they tell me about their students, teachers, staff and the programs at their schools. I have listened and learned about the special education services, distance education programs, food services, transportation services, maintenance and custodial, business office, human resources, and many other functions of the school district. In every instance, I have been impressed with the dedicated staff and their willingness to make this the best school district in the state. They make me proud to be a part of this organization.

As school begins, I am looking forward to welcoming back faculty and students, touring the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) labs, the opening of the new 6th grade wing at the Junior High School, and just being a part of the atmosphere of the schools. It all comes together when the kids and the teachers return to school.

The 6th grade wing at the Junior High School is on schedule for completion.

Although there may be a delay with a few equipment items, we are still planning to be ready for our students on the first day of school. I have been notified that some bus routes have been altered. This year, all schools will release students at the same time -- 3 p.m.

Many people have asked me why I came out of retirement to accept the position of Interim Superintendent of School. As I contemplated this

decision, I found there were three reasons: First, I believe that in some way I can encourage staff and faculty to look forward to the future rather back to the past. Secondly, I believe I can help provide the Board of Trustees assistance in their search for an outstanding new superintendent of schools.

And third, I believe I can provide a valuable link between the schools and the community. Finally, in the past few weeks of orientation and education, I have realized I sought this job for a fourth reason.

I want to be a member of a growing, thriving, successful endeavor that will help our youth towards a successful future.

The SLO can coordinates services for military children and their parents with internal organizations including, but not limited, to all Fleet and Family Support Programs (FFSP), Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP), and Child and Youth Program (CYP) activities.

The SLO coordinates services for military children and their parents with external organizations including, but not limited, to the Armed Services YMCA, Healthy Start Military Family Cluster and Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society. The SLO serves as subject matter expert in education-related issues such as military impacted schools, State Department of Education, colleges and vocational schools and financial aid institutions.

SCHOOL LIAISON OFFICER The school liaison officer (SLO) connects schools, families and the Fallon community together in meeting the educational needs of the military child, and serves as a point of contact for all who desire assistance with school-related matters.

The school liaison officer can do the following: • Answer questions about school enrollment options • Provide information about local schools • Assist with inbound/outbound school transfers • Help you understand and navigate the special education process • Provide resources for college readiness • Assist with agency referrals The SLO facilitates communication between the military family and the command staff on matters relating to region public and private schools as well as home schools and alternative modes of education such as charter schools, online education, and independent study. SCHOOL LUNCHES: Children Need Healthy Meals to Learn Churchill County School District offers healthy meals for every school day.

The cost of breakfast for students is $1.50 and for adults is $1.75 at all sites. The cost for lunch for elementary is $2; junior high school $2.25; high school $2.50; and adults $3.

Your children may qualify for free or reduced meals.

Reduced price meals are free for breakfast and lunch. An application for free and reduced priced meals will go home with every student on the first day of school. Every school year a new application has to be filled out if you think you would qualify. If you qualified last year, your status would only last for the first 30 days of this new school year which ends on October 8.

Your meal charges will start on October 9. Please fill out one application per family and return the application as soon as possible to one of your child(ren’s) teacher(s). There is an account for each student that he/she access using his/her student ID number. As parents/guardians you can place money on your child’s account and track what your child purchases throughout the year.

At the elementary school cafeterias, our staff does not make change, so all the money received will be put on the

student’s account. The students are also able to choose ala carte items and have the money taken out of their meal accounts. Examples: extra milk — 30 cents; chips — 75 cents; cookie — 25 cents; water — 50 cents; ice cream — 50 cents.

Also available to parents/guardians is the cafeprepay.com website where you can see how much money is on your child’s account and you can choose to add money to your child’s account with a credit or debit card.

The school meals initiative is taking us back in time, but moving us forward in eating healthier meals. Your children will see more fruits and vegetables on their trays. They will also see all whole grain breads. We will still serve pizza and chicken nuggets, but they will have lower sodium and be healthier for you. We are 100 percent committed to meeting the new meal pattern in the 2012/2013 school year.

We encourage all parents/guardians to visit their child’s cafeteria and to communicate with the food service staff. We are proud to serve the students of Churchill County School District.

NEW STUDENT REGISTRATION

Churchill County School District welcomes all students and their families to our learning community. Families will be provided information regarding student registration, the schools, family assistance programs, transportation, health and food services, special education, and other community services.

Educational Services is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Families may call 423-0462 to obtain more information regarding the registration process.

Parents/Legal Guardians are asked to bring the following information when registering their child: • State issued birth certificate • Medical information • Proof of immunizations • Parent/legal guardian¹s name, address and phone number • Emergency phone numbers for when parents cannot be reached • Family doctor’s name if possible • Previous school; name, address, phone, fax • Special Education information, if applicable • Certified Copies of Letter of Guardianship or Decree or Order Designating Custodial Parent, if applicable.

CCSD SPECIAL SERVICES The Special Services Department will continue to provide support to students and staff, with respect to Special Education. The Special Services Department is also responsible for facilitating state and federal compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and Nevada Revised Statutes.

Our goal is to ensure that our students receive the best possible services to meet their individual educational needs.

Special Services is required to conduct annual child find screenings to locate and provide service to children with disabilities beginning at age 3.

The Northside Early Learning Center (NELC) organizes screenings in August.

If you are interested in having your child screened to determine whether he/she are developing and gaining skills appropriate for their age, you may contact NELC at 423-3463 to make an appointment.

If you have concerns regarding a child ages 0-3, you may also make an appointment with NELC, as Nevada Early Intervention Services will be available to assist with that age group.

Special Services is also the contact point for the Gifted and Talented (GATE), Homebound, and

Homeschool programs. Screenings for GATE are performed throughout the year after a teacher referral or parental written request. Homebound and Homeschool applications are available on the CCSD website or at the CCSD Special Services Office at 601 Discovery Drive, Fallon, NV 89406.

THE BUSINESS OF THE BUSINESS OFFICE You may wonder what it is that the business office does. The business of the school district is educating students. Money and the management of money are essential in order to carry out that function. In much the same way that fuel is essential to transport students to their schools, funding, is essential to put fuel in the busses.

The business office consists of the Director of Business Services and four accounting technicians who perform a variety of functions relating to accounts payable, payroll, general ledger, budget, grants, workers compensation and fixed assets among others.

The business office is responsible for the calculation and transmittal of direct deposits or “live checks” for approximately $24 million in annual gross payroll for all funds that have payroll transactions. All absence reporting generated by the various school sites are then double checked by the business office staff and input into individuals’ records. The school district is the largest employer in Churchill County with the exception of Naval Air Station Fallon.

Accounts payable processes payments to approximately 1,200 vendors consisting of over $28 million annually including payroll benefits. Funds are accounted for in 14 separate funds, the biggest being the General Fund.

The General Fund accounts for all revenue and expenditures of the District not allocated by law or contractual agreement to some other fund. Other funds account for specific functions of the District including special education, food service, and others. In addition, Capital Projects Funds, including the Rollover Bond Fund and Debt Service Funds are maintained separately. The Debt Service Fund accounts for the long-term debt of the District.

The business office is responsible for maintaining the accounts and records of the District and making those records available to audit every year.

Additional areas of responsibility of the business office include processing worker’s compensation claims, preparing budgets and budget revisions; preparing, tracking and processing bid packages; payroll tax and other employee reports including preparing W-2s, maintenance of fixed asset records and administrating contracts.

Audited financial statements and budgets are available to the public at the business office at 545 E. Richards St. and on our website at churchill.k12.nv.us.

CUSTODIAL Churchill County Schools are under the direction of Lead Custodian Jim Jacobs. His team of 22 custodians has been preparing for the new school year by cleaning classroom and office floors from top to bottom, washing walls, shampooing carpets, removing old wax and applying new wax on floors, and cleaning student desks.

Furniture from West End has been relocated to other classrooms throughout the district. Mr. Jacobs said that one of the best things about his job is working with self-motivated employees who take a great deal of pride in their work.

WAREHOUSE The CCSD warehouse stocks many items including computers, office and instructional supplies as well as other necessities such as janitorial supplies.

Items are ordered in bulk where possible and practical to take advantage of quantity discounts. Almost all items not carried in stock are ordered through the warehouse to ensure the best quality items at the best possible price.

The cost of the inventory maintained by the warehouse can exceed $100,000 at times. The warehouse operates as a central purchasing agency by allowing others in the District to perform their tasks without distraction.

MAINTENANCE & GROUNDS DEPARTMENT Churchill County School District has Brian Byrd serving at the helm of the Facilities, Maintenance, and Grounds Department.

Maintenance and Grounds Department includes individuals who service electrical, heating and air conditioning systems. The department cleans and maintains the District’s many buildings, which consist of approximately 658,000 square feet, and the grounds, which consist of approximately 200 acres. Our oldest school was built in 1916, and our newest schools, Numa and the Junior High School, were built in 1996.

FEDERAL PROGRAMS The mission of the Federal Programs Office is to provide a supported education for every child in the community based on their needs.

In order for students to be successful in school, they need to be nourished and nurtured. Through supplemental programs funded with federal, state and private grants, students and families receive services. These programs supplement the basic education process including early childhood education, English as a second language services, Indian education services, migrant services, parenting education, and parent involvement. Other programs include peer mediation, anti-bullying programs, school safety, asset building and after school programs.

In support of the families in the school district, FRIENDS Family Resource Center (FRC) provides parenting classes, Cribs for Kids, play groups, vouchers for clothing and shoes, prescription support, emergency food information, Nevada Legal Services, and diapers and wipes. The Family Resource Center assists clients with applications for the Hands of Hope food distribution program, SNAP (food stamps), TANF and Medicaid. They also have the SAFE ­ Nevada Energy program and applications for energy assistance.

FRIENDS FRC is located in the middle Cottage School building at 255 E.Stillwater Ave., or call 428-2600.

The McKinney-Vento Homeless or Students in Transition (SIT) program provides services to families that find themselves in need of support for students with school supplies and fees for sports, music or other programs. The liaison can refer parents to other services that they may need in order to give their child a safe and secure home environment focused on academic success. Two liaisons support this program: one high school and one elementary.

The Indian Education Liaisons provide direct services to students in support of their academic success, referrals to other resources, and enhanced communication between school and home. Two liaisons are supporting students, one at the elementary level and one at the secondary level.

Assistance is provided for tutoring, applying for junior high and high school credit retrieval as well as college entrance. Churchill County High School also has a student led Culture Club. Call 423-6955.

Family services are also available through the English as a Second Language Liaison program and

the Migrant program. Families of migrant students and non-English speaking families can receive support with parenting classes, assistance with communication with the school, and referrals to English classes. Call 423-6955 or for Spanish call 427-3290.

Early Childhood classes are available for four year old children that will provide them an introduction to school and prepare them for kindergarten.

The Northside Early Learning Center Early Childhood Education program complements the kindergarten program, Head Start and the Early Childhood Special Education services. Call 775815-1874 for enrollment information for the Early Childhood program. Applications are taken through the summer.

$ HUMAN RESOURCES The Human Resources (HR) Department for the Churchill County School District is located at the District Offices, 545 E. Richards St. 423-5184.

The Director of Human Resources is Diane Peters, MBA, SPHR, who supervises daily operations with support from Lori Norcutt and Janel Buchan.

HR is responsible for recruitment and selection; labor and employee relations; labor contract negotiations, implementation and administration; benefits administration; compliance with federal, state and local laws and district regulations; administrative and investigative reviews of Title VII complaints, disciplinary actions and grievances; records maintenance; training, performance and pay administration.

CHURCHILL COUNTY ADULT DIPLOMA PROGRAM Churchill County Adult Diploma Program serves students 18 years old and older, who are not enrolled in another high school and want to earn a diploma, or want to study to take the GED at WNC or at another GED testing location.

Nevada is a state that allows the waiving of credits for an earned GED (passed at a high score) towards a high school diploma. Seventeen­-year old students may attend adult education but must go through a district approved process before enrolling in our program.

Students must be 18 years of age to receive our high school diploma. We offer many avenues of study to our students. During the Churchill County School District’s regular school year we offer live classes in, math, computer lit, and a science class two days a week. If students attend at least 80 percent of these classes, they can earn 1/2 credit in each class, each semester. We offer an English class once a week that allows students to earn 1/2 of a credit each semester if they attend 80 percent of the classes.

Students can earn credits they need for their high school diploma by working on our web-based learning program called A+ Anywhere, either at our building, at home, or on a friend’s computer. The computer must have high speed internet. The Churchill County Library will allow our students to work on A+ on their computers during the hours that they are open.

For students who want to work at home but do not have access to a computer, we have independent study materials with text and workbooks and require the student to come to the adult ed. center to take a test on each lesson. Many times a student will use all of the avenues of study to accelerate the time it takes to earn the credits needed to earn a high school diploma.

We make our computers available to the English Language Learners enrolled in the ESL Program and others who inquire. The ELLIS Program and the Rosetta Stone English Program are available to improve English writing and speaking skills. We have purchased Rosetta Stone Spanish I & II for credit and for those who want to learn to speak and understand Spanish.

We are open from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., MondayFriday. We follow the school-year schedule, including holidays. Arlene and Terri are available by phone or e-mail during weekend and evening hours or during winter, spring, and summer breaks for students working on their online classes who may be having difficulties. We follow the same Nevada Proficiency schedule as the Churchill County School District.

STUDENT HEALTH Your student’s health will affect how they feel, look, and learn. Proper nutrition, a good nights sleep, exercise, and good hygiene should be encouraged at home. Important immunization information for parents of 6th and 7th graders!

Since 6/30/2008, all students must have a Tdap immunization before starting 7th grade.

Based on a 2008 decision by the Nevada legislature, students entering 7th grade in the State of Nevada will be required to show proof of immunization against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (Tdap) prior to school enrollment.

Pertussis, also known as “whooping cough,” is a highly contagious respiratory tract infection that can occur in places like middle schools, where there is close interaction among large numbers of students. Although most children are immunized against pertussis before enrolling in kindergarten, immunity wears off over time and leaves adolescents unprotected. This requirement affects all students entering 7th grade, provided at least five years have passed since the student¹s last childhood tetanuscontaining vaccine (Td, DTP or DTaP).

In an effort to accommodate our community’s limited vaccination resources, reminder letters will be sent home to parents/guardians soon after your student turns 11 years old.

Parents are encouraged to review their child’s shot record and make arrangements with their health care provider for vaccination prior to the busy “Back to School” season.

Important Immunization Information for Parents of ALL Students new to the Churchill County School District!

Beginning June 30, 2011, all students new to the Churchill County School District must now have two Varicella (Chicken Pox) immunizations before school entry in any grade level.

Health Problems In order for your child to be safe and healthy in school, health problems, including, but not limited to the following, must be brought to the attention of the school nurse: • Diabetes Eating • Disorders Blood • Disorders • Kidney Problems • Depression • Cancer • Seizures • Migraines • Ulcers • Asthma • New Glasses/Contacts • Hearing Aides Screening To comply with minimum state law requirements, NRS 392.420, vision and hearing screening will be performed on all new students, all KG and 4th, 7th, and 10th grade students, and students in other grades who missed screening in previous grades or failed previous screening. Also, students referred by teachers, parents, or the child will be screened. Height and weight screening will be performed on all 4th, 7th, and 10th grade students.

Scoliosis screening will be performed on all new students, all 7th grade students, and 8th graders who either missed screening in 7th grade or failed 7th grade screening. Scoliosis is a side-to-side curvature of the spine. In areas where screening has already been completed, spinal variations have been

detected in about 4 to 10 percent of the adolescent population and 2 percent have required active treatment or continued observation. The purpose of this program is to recognize potential problems at the earliest stages so that the need for treatment can be determined.

Nurses who have been given special training will conduct scoliosis screening. If there is a spinal concern, the child will be rechecked by the School Nurse. If further consultation is recommended, parents of students will be notified by the school nurse and will be asked to see their own physician for further evaluation.

Parents with concerns regarding the screening of their child’s vision or hearing are encouraged to contact your school’s nurse.

Too Sick for School Determining whether or not to send your child to school when they may be sick can be difficult. The following will help you to determine if you should keep your child at home: • If a rash is present that has not been evaluated by a physician.

• If your child’s oral temperature exceeds 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit, or 1 or 2 degrees above the child’s normal temperature. A child with such a fever should remain home for 24 hours after the temperature returns to normal.

• If your child vomits and continues to experience nausea and/or vomiting.

• Diarrhea.

• If your child complains of severe, persistent pain, the symptoms should be referred to a physician for evaluation.

• If your child shows signs of upper respiratory infection (cold symptoms) serious enough to interfere with the child’s ability to learn.

If there are signs of conjunctivitis (“pink eye”) with matter coming from one or both eyes, itching, or crusts on eyelids; the child should be evaluated by a physician.

If there are open sores that have not been evaluated by a physician.

If there are signs of infestation with lice (nits in the hair, it scalp), the child should be evaluated for treatment with a pediculicide.

Prescription Medications at School This year there have been several changes made to the Medication Administration Policy: • The medication must have been prescribed by a licensed physician or licensed practitioner. CCSD Form 1M (available from School Nurse) must be filled out in entirety and signed by the parent/legal guardian, prescribing physician, and registered or licensed practical school nurse. An order signed by the prescribing physician may be attached to the form in lieu of his/her signature. If the medication is contained in a current pharmacy labeled container, this may serve as written physician permission. (The School Nurse retains the right and discretion to request a completed Form 1M to be signed by the physician).

• The medication must be contained in a pharmacy labeled container. Controlled substance medications must be brought to school by a parent or responsible

adult (controlled substances can no longer be brought to school by the student). Any change in the dosage of the medication or the time to be given requires a new written consent from your physician.

The discontinuation of certain medication can have adverse side effects on your child. You may be asked by the school nurse for a written physician order or physician’s notification to discontinue or restart medication. Medication must be sent to school in the appropriate pharmacy container. School personnel will not give medication that is sent in a baggie or envelope.

Asthma Rescue Inhalers and Epinephrine Auto-Injectors The parent/legal guardian of a pupil who has asthma or anaphylaxis may request permission for their child to carry and self-administer asthma rescue inhalers and epinephrine auto-injectors.

CCSD form 5M which states that the pupil is responsible for carrying and capable of selfadministering the medication (available from school nurse) must be filled out in entirety and signed by the parent/legal guardian, prescribing physician, and registered or licensed practical school nurse.

Abuses will be dealt with on an individual basis, reviewed by the site administrator and school nurse.

In order to administer non-prescription medication to elementary students, the following requirements must be met: • CCSD Form 1M (available from the school nurse) must be filled out in entirety and signed by the parent/legal guardian, the prescribing physician and registered or licensed practical school nurse.

• The medication must be in its original container.

The school nurse will not store over-the-counter medication in the health office for students to selfadminister without a written order from a physician and written parental consent.

Non-Prescription (Over-the-Counter) Medication High school and junior high school students are permitted to carry and self-administer nonprescription over-the-counter medications. However, this privilege may be rescinded if abuse occurs.

NAFIS The National Association of Federally Impacted Schools (NAFIS) is a non-profit, non-partisan corporation of school districts from throughout the United States, organized primarily to educate Congress on the importance of Impact Aid. Founded in 1973, the association works to ensure the needs of federally connected children are met with adequate federal funds.

NAFIS represents children residing on Indian Lands, military children, children residing in low-rent housing projects, and children whose parents are civilian but work and/or live on federal property. NAFIS is governed by a board of directors elected from its membership. The association is located in Washington, D.C., with a full time professional staff under the leadership of an executive director.

In order to maintain and improve our federal funding status CCSD staff and the Board of Trustees advocate for our students at the federal level each year in order to maintain and improve our federal funds.

CCSD WAVE ONLINE ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION The 2012-2013 school year presents new and exciting opportunities for parents who enroll students in the CCSD Wave Online Alternative Education Program. Wave Online is partners in education with quality award winning Aventa, A+, and K¹² programs to bring CCSD students quality 21st century learning.

The CCSD Wave Online uses an innovative educational model to provide students, grades K-12, who have access to a computer (with a high speed internet connection) with the best education possible.

An application form can be downloaded from the CCSD website at www.churchill.k12.nv.us/waveschool or call 775-294-4010, for enrollment opportunities in the CCSD Wave Online Alternative Education Program. Completed student application forms need to be submitted to the Counseling Department at the student’s assigned school site.

CCSD Wave Online provides each student with unique opportunities to grow academically, emotionally, and socially while recognizing individual differences. Our Wave Online staff is committed to creating and maintaining a supportive and safe learning environment where self-discipline, motivation, and excellence in learning are continually encouraged. We believe Wave Online is an excellent choice for families who are interested in getting actively involved in their student’s education.

Students will experience a caring and non threatening environment where they will achieve mastery, personal growth, and proficient exit outcomes set forth by the Churchill County School District. Wave Online is designed to accommodate individual styles of learning. All students have the opportunity to experience success.

CCSD MASTER PLAN TASK FORCE The CCSD Master Plan Task Force committee is a standing committee of the CCSD Board of Trustees, consisting of eleven dedicated volunteers from a cross-section of the community. Eric Olsen is the chair of this committee that analyzes and reviews district demographics, status of school district buildings, and make short and long range recommendations to the Board of Trustees concerning these issues.

Reports from this committee to the board may include recommendations concerning bond issues, land purchases, new buildings, building renovations, organizational structure, etc.

Here are the listings of buses and routes as­signed to students effective Monday, August 27, 2012. Times given are approximate times for students to be at the bus stop.

During the first week of school, each kinder­gartener should wear a name tag with his or her first name, school they attend, teacher, address being bussed home to. There is no city transpor­tation for high school and junior high students. Our experience in past years indicates that busses may have late arrivals home in the after­noons for the first few days.

Schools and drivers are making every effort to assure students are on the correct busses.

A bus transfer system is used in Churchill Coun­ty. Busses will arrive at the schools listed, and students may need to transfer to another bus to get to their respective schools.

Please refer to the transfer list for that information! West End School will no longer be a transfer school. Students who live in the West End area will have to walk to another school.

Per school Regulation 5144.1 the Churchill County School District’s bus routes are estab­lished for A) K-6 students living more than 1/2 mile from their school of attendance.

B) Junior High and High School students living outside the city limits. C) Bus routes and stops for students eligible for transportation will be es­tablished so that the stops are not less than 1/2 mile apart.

PARENT AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT IN OUR SCHOOLS Jane Moon, Parent & Community Involvement Volunteer

Welcome back to school students, families and Fallon community!

It’s going to be another school year filled with much learning for all, collaborating together and providing support and solutions to meet the high standards that we expect from CCSD, most especially in the area of student achievement.

Engaging our community We, parents/guardians, are our children’s primary teachers and are ultimately responsible for their well-being, safety, health and education.

The Churchill County School District recognizes and values every parent/guardian’s role in the education of our youth. For this reason, much effort and work has been put towards the engagement of parents, families and our community in assisting with the academic achievement of all students.

Countless studies have proven that parent and community involvement with individual students, as well as in the classrooms and in entire schools, has increased not only the academic achievement of the children, but has also enhanced their self-esteem.

I encourage you to GET INVOLVED… our kids feel valued and empowered when we listen to them and take sincere interest in what they do.

The role of the parent and community involvement coordinator I have the pleasure and honor of assisting the school district in further engaging parents, families and our Fallon community in the education of our youth. Those of us who live in Churchill County are blessed to be a part of a community which truly values our children.

The standard of care and commitment that our community places on our youth spills over into the fiber of the Churchill County School District.

At CCSD, high expectations are placed on what our children learn, as well as the delivery of the instruction that each teacher is responsible for, under the leadership of the school principal, with the support of other employees such as school secretaries, aides, janitors, etc.

It takes all of the dedicated employees at CCSD working together to ensure that students continue to grow and are challenged to the best of their unique abilities.

This grant-funded position enables me to collaborate and support administration, individual 14

schools and parents to assist in student achievement goals. Most of our work is done through the CCSD Parent Involvement Committee (PIC), which is made up of me, parent representatives from all of our seven school sites, Sue Chambers, CCSD Federal Grants Facilitator; the superintendent; and Richard Gent, School Board Trustee (all school principals and School Board Trustees are also invited to attend). We meet every first Thursday of the months that school is in session.

We also have Parent Involvement Committees (PICs) at every school whose purpose is to reach out to parents in order to communicate, educate and innovate them to become more engaged in their child/children¹s education.

Each of our three Title I elementary schools has an official Parent Involvement Liaison who will help serve the unique needs of each school.

It is our goal for all parents to know that they are valued and that their input regarding their child/ children’s education is both wanted and needed.

Creating win-win situations for kids and their families So, here is where we all come in, as parents, extended families, and our community at large.

We must support our students at CCSD in order to maintain and improve the quality of life which we’ve all become quite fond of and accustomed to here in Fallon. These kids will, after all, be those responsible for our money in the banking industry, healthcare in the medical field, shelter and roads in the construction and engineering arenas, and the education of our future generations. Get involved with your school’s Parent Involvement Committee (PIC for short)! Remember that each of our seven schools has a PIC group in place whose purpose is to support student learning and achievement.

Any time or special talent you’re capable of offering your child’s teacher, classroom, school, or even the entire district, is very much needed, appreciated and valued. I invite you to contact your child’s teacher, school principal or myself should you have questions regarding becoming more involved in your child’s education. We need you; and will find something of meaning for you to do.

• CCHS has an active PIC (Parent Involvement Committee) and would like to invite all parents to attend and participate. Our first meeting will be held on September 5 at 7 a.m. in the CCHS Library Conference Room. Please contact Mr. Lords with questions.

• Students will need to pay $15 for their annual student services fee. If a student would like to purchase a yearbook it will be $60 if paid for by the first week of school.

• On the first day of school, all students will report to the gym at 8:10 a.m. and then will be released to their first period class.

• Schedule changes will be completed by the first day of school.

• Parents will receive grade notifications mailed home at least every six weeks. We also encourage parents to keep updated by accessing PowerSchool to check on their student¹s grades and attendance.

• CCHS will also continue with a Distance Education Program. This program will meet all the state regulations and students must have counselor and administrative recommendation to participate.

There is a $25 technology fee for one or more online classes.

• CCHS will be collecting class fees and issuing student parking permits August 20 and August 21 from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Students must bring the following to qualify for a parking permit: $5.00 fee, proof of current insurance, current registration and a copy of the student’s valid driver’s license. For students under 18, parents must sign for the student permit. All vehicles parked on Churchill County High School Campus must have a 2012-2013 parking permit.

Welcome to CCJHS. How quickly the summer of 2012 has come and gone.

The staff at CCJHS is excited for the new academic year to begin. A new beginning to the new year is really an understatement. The 2012-2013 school year brings with it a new building with eleven 6th-grade classrooms. There will be new staff members as a result of the eleven new classrooms. Staff changes will be occurring at the 7th and 8th grade levels as well.

We will be moving to a middle school setting rather than the typical 7th & 8th grade setting of the past. Even though we will be changing to a middle school concept, the quality of educational services will remain the same.

CCJHS will be hosting our “Back to School Night� on August 23 from 67:30 p.m. We will meet in the gym at 6 p.m. for a brief introduction and then you will be able to tour the school, locate your classrooms and meet with your teachers.

Welcome to a great year! Please join us for our Back to School Night on August 27, from 5:307:00 p.m. We are excited about the upcoming school year with the vast amount of learning that is about to take place. Starting our second year with common core standards there is a lot for all of Keith Boone us to learn and master together. The following are learning highlights that will occur at each grade level throughout the school year.

Vision Statement: Building Excellence in Students, Staff and Community.

1st Grade Highlights: We will become great readers, writers and mathematicians. Your child will be expected to learn all math facts to 20, measurement, time to the half hour, and double-digit adding and subtracting, with carrying to the tens place.

Reading is also very exciting in first grade as we learn about the characters, setting and plots of stories. They will have a great time with phonics, songs, and uses of words and their meanings. During first grade we hope to see students expand their writing abilities by writing crazy and interesting stories, poems and reports.

2nd grade Highlights: Second grade is a transition year. As we progress through the year we will move from learning to read, to reading to learn. Our focus will be on reading comprehension and applying first grade math skills to more complex operations.

It is imperative to continue to practice skills learned at school daily at home.

3rd Grade Highlights: In reading, students will focus on identifying main ideas/details, finding causes/effects, and summarize in both fiction and nonfiction. In math, students will learn to multiply and divide, fractions, and geometric figures. Science and social studies focuses matter/motion, life, water, and rock cycles, government and economics, as well as map skills and landforms. Third graders also expand writing and are expected to write papers that stay on topic, have a clear introduction, details that make sense and are in order, and a closing sentence/ paragraph.

4th Grade Highlights: Fourth grade math mastery includes: multiplication/division with multiple digits, factors, multiples, prime numbers; analyze patterns; geometry lines/line segments/angles/2-D and 3-D figures; identifying and converting standard/ metric units of length, weight, capacity and time; fractions; decimals, comparing decimals to fractions. In Language Arts we concentrate on literature, informational text, language, writing, short/long vowel patterns, blends/digraphs/ silent letters, homophones/homographs/homonyms, synonyms/antonyms and proofreading. Science and Social Studies focuses animals, plants, electricity, solar system, simple machines, and Nevada history.

Our teachers and paraprofessionals are refreshed and ready to educate the future citizens and leaders of Fallon.

Professionally, our goal this year is to continue to implement the State of Nevada’s Common Core Curriculum and deploy teaching strategies to help meet the learning needs of all students.

School will begin on August 27. Our staff and PTO will host “Back to School Night” on September 6 from 6-7:30 p.m. This will be a great opportunity to visit the school and meet you child’s teacher.

Staff will continue to go through professional development each month with items such as: Thinking Maps, Write from the Beginning, Common Core Curriculum, Review 360, Daily 5/Café, sheltered instruction and Enterprise through our renaissance programs for reading and math.

Here at L.E.S. we are implementing a district-wide computer designed progressive discipline program (Review 360) to ensure consistent student and teacher etiquette.

For several years L.E.S. has been a Title I school. We qualify for Federal Grant Money as 36 percent of the student population meeting free and reduced lunch guidelines. This Federal Grant Money is focused on students that need help with reading strategies.

As many Elementary Schools throughout the district, L.E.S. has a lot of technology within it doors. Each classroom has a Smart Board, Elmo and computers. We recently opened our STEM Labs (Integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) that will service students in grades 3-5 learning 21st century computer skills.

L.E.S. has collaborated with Naval Air Station Fallon as our Partner in Education. Much needed help has come to our site through countless volunteer hours from our local Navy servicemen and women.

As the L.E.S. Principal, I am enthusiastic about this school year and will be focusing on student achievement. If I can help you in any way please give me a call at 423-1999.

5th Grade Highlights: The 5th graders at EC Best take with them life-long academic skills.

Reading will introduce story elements through the use of novels that are read together in class. Science will engage students to use critical thinking and interpersonal skills through the use of projects. In Math the students will review double-digit multiplication/division, use of decimal and fractions, introduction to algebra, area, volume, graphing, and percent/ratio. Finally in writing we teach expository, narrative, opinion and note taking.

Northside Early Learning Center (NELC) provides an excellent learning environment and unique teaching opportunities for the district’s pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classrooms.

Back to School Night We will have our “Otter Pop” into Kindergarten on August 23 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. Our Pre-K Back to School Orientation will be on Friday, September 14 from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Pre-K Program Students ages 3-5 have access to several Pre-K programs including a state funded Pre-K program (4-year-old students only), a Title I Pre-K program, and Early Childhood Special Education. Specific criteria must be met for students to be eligible for the above mentioned programs. All parents wishing to determine if their child is eligible for services must contact the NELC office and submit an application. Part of the application process requires that the child participate in a developmental screening which will be conducted Aug. 27-29 at NELC. You may schedule an appointment for screening which will begin Aug. 13. Pre-K sessions will be held Mondays through Thursdays with morning sessions from 7:55-10:55 a.m. and afternoon sessions from 12:10-3:10 p.m.

Kindergarten All students enrolling in kindergarten will also receive an outstanding education at NELC. You may enroll your child in kindergarten if they will be 5 years of age on or before Sept. 30 at the district’s Welcome Center which is also located at NELC. Please bring a copy of your child’s birth certificate and immunization records at the time of enrollment.

NELC will offer all day kindergarten programs for students requiring an all day setting in a language, literacy rich environment. Students are referred to the all day classrooms based on recommendation through the screening process or have been found eligible as English Language Learners. NELC will also offer a program where parents can pay for students to attend all day rather than the traditional half-day kindergarten for a fee of $240 per month.

All-day kindergarten is held Monday through Thursday from 8:10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The remaining kindergarten classrooms will be half-day programs with two AM (morning) session times and two PM (afternoon) session times.

Half-day kindergarten classes are held Monday through Thursday with the following four time sessions: 7:45-11:05 a.m. and 11:40-3 p.m. All kindergarten teachers are also highly qualified and bring much experience and professionalism to NELC and are looking forward to providing your child with a great foundation for learning that they will require as they begin their educational learning process.

At Northside Early Learning Center, we are excited to provide the foundational beginnings that will support the education of Churchill County students. We look forward to working with these young students as they grow.

FERPA (Family Education Rights and Privacy Act) The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a Federal law, requires that Churchill County School District­with certain exceptions­obtain your written consent prior to the disclosure of personally identifiable information from your child’s education records; however, Churchill County School District may disclose appropriately designated “directory information” without written consent, unless you have advised the District to the contrary in accordance with District procedures.

The primary purpose of directory information is to allow the Churchill County School District to include this type of information from your child’s education records in certain school publications.

Silver State Charter Schools is a Free, Public, on-line, distance education school. We enroll and provide bus service for students in Douglas, Washoe, Lyon, Mineral, Storey and Churchill counties as well as Carson City. Our school uses a unique hybrid model of on-line course work combined with students attending our Carson City campus on selected days. We developed the hybrid model to allow our teachers to focus on the student by reducing their daily clerical load. Alternately, while not encouraged, students may choose to enroll and work on-line, completely from home, not attending on-campus classes, exactly like other on-line charter schools in Nevada. Students are then assisted by our Nevada certified teachers by phone or email.
