The Edward R. Leahy, Jr. Endowment was founded in 1995 by Edward and Patricia Leahy to honor the life and memory of their son, Edward R. Leahy, Jr., whose personal disabilities were attended to with compassion and skill by many health professionals over the course of his life. The Leahy Endowment provides financial resources to support theoretical and applied research, faculty development and support for programs that advance the cause of disabled persons who need long-term assistance. The endowment supports the work of persons practicing in physical and occupational therapy, nursing science and related health care areas, with particular interest in individuals and groups that approach their practice as scholars, teachers and practitioners. Primary recipients are University of Scranton faculty from the Panuska College of Pro fessional Studies, consisting of the Departments of Counseling and Human Services, Educa tion, Exercise Science and Sport, Health Administration and Human Resources, Nurs ing, Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy. The endowment was established and is supported, in part, by the Leahy family and is enriched annually by gifts from corporations and individuals who wish to support the work of the Edward R. Leahy, Jr. Endowment.

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN Dear Partners of the Panuska College of Professional Studies Family, In May of 2007, I received a wonderful call from The University of Scranton asking me to accept the position of academic dean of the Panuska College of Professional Studies. I was humbled and delighted to join Scranton, especially PCPS. After much discernment and prayer, I am now writing my last letter for Challenges in Theory and Practice. It was a true honor to serve as your academic dean. It has been a true blessing to work with each of you. Our accomplishments in every area are many. Those accomplishments are reflections of the amazing faculty, staff, students and community members who call PCPS home. In the words of 13th century Persian poet Jalaluddin Mevlana Rumi: “Goodbyes are only for those who love with their eyes. Because for those who love with heart and soul there is no such thing as separation.” I am and will always be thankful to each of you for always placing the PCPS student first in your heart. PCPS students, both undergraduate and graduate, truly model our rich Jesuit Catholic heritage by viewing their professions as a vocation. The PCPS community cares about humanity. Another poet, Khalil Gibran, penned: “One day you will ask me which is more important. My life or yours? I will say mine and you will walk away not knowing that you are my life.” Please know that you will always be in my prayers. I know that you will continue to “set the world on fire” with the Ignatian spirit. Without a doubt, let’s remember these words from my favorite bear, Winnie the Pooh: “Goodbye...? Oh no, please. Can’t we go back to page one and do it all over again?” “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”
You will always be in my thoughts and prayers. Love,
Debra Pellegrino, Ed.D. Academic Dean of the J.A. Panuska College of Professional Studies

PELLEGRINO RETIREMENT ANNOUNCEMENT Dear Members of the University Community, Debra Pellegrino, Ed.D., who has faithfully served the University as Dean of the Panuska College of Professional Studies for the past 15 years, has decided to conclude her tenure as dean in January 2022. On behalf of the University, I wish to thank her for her inspiring leadership and dedicated service to the University. With tremendous energy and vision, Dean Pellegrino has worked with her colleagues to develop and guide PCPS’s 23 undergraduate majors and more than a dozen graduate and doctoral programs. These programs, which combine theory and practice, have continued to grow and thrive over the past 15 years. PCPS departments include counseling and human services, education, health administration and human resources, health and human performance, nursing, occupational therapy and physical therapy. Recently, new programs on the undergraduate and graduate level were added to the College including the B.S. in Communication Science Disorders, the M.S. in Applied Behavior Analysis and the M.S. in Speech and Language Pathology. Passionate about Jesuit education, Dean Pellegrino has ensured that Ignatian pedagogies are embedded throughout the student educational experience at PCPS. During her tenure as dean, T.A.P.E.S.T.R.Y., a four-year professional development program, was added for all PCPS undergraduates. First-year PCPS students participate in the Blessing of the Books, an annual book collection program she began in 2007 at the very start of her time at Scranton and which has distributed nearly 35,000 books to children in need. She has written editorials and initiated programming to encourage literacy, locally and beyond. Under Dean Pellegrino’s guidance, the University built and dedicated the Edward R. Leahy Jr. Hall. This eight-story, 116,360-square-foot building with 25 state-of-the-art laboratories, nine traditional and active-learning classrooms, and multiple simulation environments has become the home of the Health and Human Performance, Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy departments. The project also included important new resources in and renovations to McGurrin Hall, such as the nurse anesthesia simulation center. During her tenure as dean, Dr. Pellegrino became the Executive Director of the Leahy Community Health and Family Center, which now houses five different pro bono clinics: medical, counseling, low vision, physical therapy and community health education. The Center is also home to the Alice V. Leahy Food Pantry for the underserved of Lackawanna County. By supporting these important community-based initiatives under the Dean’s leadership, the students, faculty and staff continue to be “women and men for and with others.” The annual U.S. Conference on disAbility continues to grow and the University serves as the executive hub for the Autism Collaborative Centers of Excellence, a regional initiative designed to deliver a full array of services and support for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Under Dean Pellegrino’s stewardship, the Leahy Endowment continues to grow in support of faculty and student research that focuses on pediatric disability studies. She remains grateful to the College’s many donors for their continued support for the students and faculty of PCPS.

“Embracing the Call to Care” is an apt description of Dean Pellegrino’s service throughout her time at the University. She has written about that theme in articles in AJCU’s Connections and used the theme to celebrate Leahy Hall’s completion. Needless to say, her accomplishments and successes, and those of her students and graduates, are as boundless as her energy. I am very grateful for all of this and especially for Dean Pellegrino’s visible and authentic dedication to the Catholic faith and to Ignatian spirituality. Dean Pellegrino will be granted a well-deserved sabbatical while she discerns her future steps and she will be named Dean Emeritus. The University will immediately begin the process of initiating a national search for Dean Pellegrino’s successor. I have asked Provost Jeff Gingerich, Ph.D., to assemble a search committee so that we can advertise this position in early fall and hope to fill the position in summer 2022. Information about an Interim Dean will be shared in the coming weeks. Please join me in wishing Dean Pellegrino well and in thanking her for her wonderful service to the University. May God’s blessings be upon her now and always. Yours faithfully,
Rev. Joseph Marina, S.J. President

MONSIGNOR JOHN JORDAN RE FL E C T S O N C O L L E G E ’ S E V O L U T I O N U NDE R P E L L E G R I N O Monsignor John Jordan jokes that he’s been a member of the Panuska College of Professional Studies’ Board of Visitors since “Adam ate the apple.” Kidding aside, in his three-plus decades of service, Msgr. Jordan has seen plenty of great strides made by the college. And as far as he’s concerned, its accomplishments under the leadership of Dean Debra A. Pellegrino, Ed.D., have made The University of Scranton “one of the leading Jesuit schools in the country.” “Under Dean Pellegrino, we have seen the Panuska College grow by leaps and bounds,” said Msgr. Jordan. “The University is a big operation, and the Panuska College is one of its stars.” Msgr. Jordan is one of a small but committed group of advisors who serve on the Board of Visitors, which is charged with providing the Dean with keen insight and guidance on issues relevant to advancing the college’s mission. The board is made up of alumni and community leaders representing a variety of fields. Now retired, Msgr. Jordan formerly served as superintendent of the Diocese of Scranton schools and initially led Scranton’s NativityMiguel School. “The board is a good group, and we try our best to give Dean Pellegrino good advice before taking on various initiatives,” said Msgr. Jordan, a Pittston resident. “She presents different updates on where they’re
6
going and where they’re looking to go. For what it’s worth, the advice we give I think has helped the college. And one of the great things Dean Pellegrino did with our meetings was to bring in students from the college’s various disciplines to make presentations for us. Through talking to them, we get a sense of what is going on at the University. That way, you’re on the ground talking about the issues that really matter.” Msgr. Jordan cited several PCPS projects implemented during Dr. Pellegrino’s tenure that he’s especially proud of, from the Edward R. Leahy, Jr. Center Clinic for the Uninsured to the addition of numerous undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs. Through it all, he said, Dr. Pellegrino has provided steady leadership to the faculty and staff members charged with helping her carry out this important work. “She has been so committed to the Ignatian mission of the Jesuits — not just the professional studies, but also the liberal arts. The students know who they are and what the mission is, thanks to that emphasis on service learning. That’s what I admire most about what she’s done,” Msgr. Jordan said. “She’s not only a professional, but she also has that personal touch. And that goes a long way to connecting people to the University.” “Now, as Dean Pellegrino departs, she’s handing off to Father Marina a very solid program that can continue to grow with good leadership,” he continued. “Panuska is a very well-run school, and the new president has something to be grateful for, thanks to Dean Pellegrino.”

AN INTERVIEW WITH DEBRA PELLEGRINO
After years spent building a successful career in the Midwest, Debra A. Pellegrino, Ed.D., arrived at The University of Scranton in 2007, for reasons both professional and personal. “I just decided I wanted to take the next step in my career and become a dean,” Dr. Pellegrino recalled. “And, having grown up in Williamsport, I just missed Pennsylvania and my family. My mom was getting up there in years, and I wanted to be near her.” “Turns out,” she said, “it was a true blessing.” No question, Dr. Pellegrino has much to be proud of after nearly 15 years as the Dean of the University’s J.A. Panuska College of Professional Studies (PCPS), from introducing new, in-demand majors to increasing enrollment and retention to spearheading multi-million-dollar building projects and community partnerships. Now, though, it’s time for a well-deserved break. In January, Dr. Pellegrino will retire from her post and take a sabbatical from the University. During that year away from academia, she plans to figure out her next move. “The college is doing so well, but I know I’m ready for a new adventure. I feel like God is calling me,” she said. “I can honestly say I’ve loved every minute of it — all 15 years of it. And we’ve had such great teamwork here within the college. From the time I came in, everyone has been so welcoming. And the students are the best. Because of our strong emphasis on the liberal arts, they have a strong sense of what they want their vocation to be. They have that call to care — they really do.” An accomplished educator for more than four decades, Dr. Pellegrino started her career as an elementary school teacher before becoming a curriculum and instruction facilitator and consultant
with a special knack for fostering interdisciplinary collaboration amongst her colleagues. Ultimately, she ventured into higher education, serving as a tenured professor and eventually chair of the Education department at the Jesuitled Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri. As Dean of PCPS, Dr. Pellegrino currently oversees more than 20 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs. Her myriad responsibilities include direct oversight of curriculum development for undergraduate and graduate programs; faculty selection, promotion and development; academic student development; assessment and learning outcomes; finances; strategic planning; and accreditation reviews. Given her love for exploring and carrying out new ideas, Dr. Pellegrino has found the role of dean to be a tremendously gratifying job. Under her guidance, the college has undertaken a number of herculean endeavors, including the $48 million construction of Edward R. Leahy Jr. Hall. The state-of-the-art facility serves as the home of the college’s physical therapy, occupational therapy and exercise science/ kinesiology programs. Another of Dr. Pellegrino’s signature accomplishments was leading the establishment of the University’s Autism Hub with services in Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA). Through a partnership with the AllOne Foundation and the procurement of a $7 million grant, the Autism Collaborative Centers of Excellence (ACCE) was formed to enhance the service delivery system and minimize the service gaps for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their families in Northeastern and Northcentral Pennsylvania.

Every year, the University hosts the U.S. Conference on disABILITY, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in fall 2021 with the theme, “Exploring Autism Across the Spectrum: Building Inclusive Communities.” “What we’ve been able to accomplish in the last three years is just amazing,” Dr. Pellegrino said of the ACCE collaborative. “When we first started on the project five years ago, I thought, ‘There’s no way all these people are going to work together.’ But here we are, because of all these community partnerships. And it’s such important work — after all, autism touches almost every family in some way.” Dr. Pellegrino also brought the communitybased learning service project “Blessing of the Books” from Kansas City to the University. Every fall, PCPS students collect books donated by members of the University community. From there, the college’s first-year students add a hand-written note to the books, which are then blessed and distributed during the Christmas season through area organizations and children’s programs in hopes of promoting literacy. So far, the program has distributed more than 35,000 books to children in need. Meanwhile, Dr. Pellegrino serves or has previously served on the board of directors for numerous organizations, including the Edward R. Leahy Jr. Free Clinic for the Uninsured of Lackawanna County, the United Way, the American Council of Jesuit Education for Teacher Education, and Scranton Preparatory School. Her committee memberships include the Inter-professional Advisory Committee, University of Success, American Educational Research Association and Geisinger-CMC Advisory Board. Dr. Pellegrino’s scholarly research is geared around literacy, curriculum development, multi-
8
media-assisted problem-based learning, and social justice issues around healthcare, education and policy development. Her edited book, “Designing Problem-Driven Instruction with Online SocialMedia,” published in 2012 by Taylor Francis Publishing, focuses on multimedia project-based learning. Dr. Pellegrino’s dedication to higher education and the community has been consistently recognized, and includes the Arts in Education Administrative Award for PCA Arts Education Partnership, the Alpha Sigma Nu Honor Society of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, and the Celebrate Literacy Award (from both the International Reading Association and the Northeastern Pennsylvania chapter). She was named among Northeastern Pennsylvania’s Top 25 Women in Business in 2011, and she is an active member of Circle 200 of Northeastern Pennsylvania. Of course, Dr. Pellegrino knows none of these accolades would be possible without the support of the University’s administration — particularly the late former University President the Rev. Scott R. Pilarz, S.J. — and the dedicated faculty, staff and students who make PCPS such an idyllic place to work. “Father Pilarz was a real inspiration to me — probably because of my love of poetry. He also married my husband and me,” said Dr. Pellegrino, who is married to former University biology faculty member Michael Hardisky, Ph.D., now a professor at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine. “As far as PCPS goes, I like to think of us as a family,” she continued. “A lot of what our programs are about is building on strengths. And that’s true of any workplace — as an administrator, you look at your people’s talents and strengths and take good advantage of them. You have to work together and listen to people. And you have to understand that everyone has good days and bad days, so you can’t be quick to judge. You need to

find out what else is happening in the person’s life that might be affecting their behavior, and then solve the problem from there. It seems to be working, because we’ve come so far in the last 15 years.” That progress is precisely why Dr. Pellegrino feels it’s the right time to depart, bittersweet as it may be. As far as what’s next? Maybe she’ll write another book, or perhaps take on some consulting work. The possibilities are nearly endless, and that’s what excites her. “I’m open to it all,” she said. “Wherever God takes me.”
About Debra A. Pellegrino, Ed.D. Family: A native of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Dr. Pellegrino has three grown children who reside in Midland and Dallas, Texas, and Chicago. She is married to Michael Hardisky, Ph.D., and together they have four grandchildren. Education: Dr. Pellegrino earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and her doctoral degree at Saint Louis University. She is a graduate of the Ignatian Colleagues Program, a national program of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities designed to educate and form administrators and faculty more deeply in the Jesuit and Catholic tradition of higher education. Favorite poets: Mary Oliver, Wallace Stevens and e. e. cummings. What inspires her? “Nature is very dear to my heart, especially hummingbirds. It really helps me see God in all things. Family inspires me as well. My parents were excellent role models followed by my great siblings. I just love people, because I believe that the world has so many human beings that truly spread love and kindness.”
Proudest accomplishments as PCPS Dean: “That my faculty and staff felt supported in the work they did. And that I worked hard to find the funds to make things happen for the college. We’ve had so many nice, supportive donors out there who were willing to give. I’m very grateful for that.” She’s also very proud of helping to fund “A Place of Solitude,” an enclosed space for quiet reflection on the second floor of McGurrin Hall. She dedicated the space in memory of her late parents in partnership with her dear friends JoAnne and Carl Kuehner, who also dedicated this special place to their parents. Why she loves the Jesuit educational model: “Because you use a variety of lenses — it’s almost like from poetry to prose, as my assistant dean often says. It’s the critical thinking, the academic excellence and the giving back to others. It’s because you’re taught to question things, to not just take things at face value. It’s being a woman or man for others. Not only are you giving, but you’re always learning as well. The humility that comes from learning from others is amazing.”

If there is one constant in Dr. Debra A. Pellegrino’s highly distinguished tenure as Dean of the Panuska College of Professional Studies, it’s growth — constant, strategic, forward-thinking growth, always with the high-minded ideals of The University of Scranton’s Jesuit philosophy in mind. Since Dr. Pellegrino’s appointment 15 years ago, PCPS has embarked on one monumental project after another in hopes of meeting the needs of the college’s students and the professional world at large. That work began almost immediately after Dr. Pellegrino took over the position in July 2007. That December, the college hosted its very first “Blessing of the Books,” a communitybased learning service project that Dr. Pellegrino
brought from Kansas City to the University. Every year since then, PCPS students have spent the fall months collecting books donated by members of the University community. From there, the college’s

PELLEGRINO’S TENURE IN PCPS
In 2011, “Blessing of the Books” celebrated its fifth anniversary with more than 50 PCPS student service-learning volunteers collecting more than 4,600 children’s books — 1,000 more than the previous year. On Dec. 6 of that year, thenUniversity President Rev. Kevin P. Quinn, S.J., blessed the books spread around the Christmas tree in McGurrin Hall. Many of the books that year were donated to the library of Holy Rosary School in Duryea, which was flooded in September 2011, as well as St. Joseph’s Center and United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania. All told, the program has distributed more than 35,000 books to children in need since its inception. In 2008, the college celebrated the opening of the Edward R. BLESSING OF THE BOOKS
Hometown Donation
As part of the First Year experience in the Panuska College of Professional Studies, all students participate in the Blessing of the Books. Students are required to donate a book and convince family, friends and the University community at large to donate books. The books that are collected get donated to local schools, daycares and other venues that help get the books into the hands of children. Reading is such an important part of children’s early education and this program affords children the ability to get books and read. Victoria Maura, a first-year student majoring in kinesiology, took it upon herself this summer to collect books from her hometown. She put a message out on her community’s Facebook page soliciting donations and ended up with 10 boxes of gently used books. She said she was not surprised by the response: “My hometown always gets behind community projects like this.” She was thrilled with the number of books she was able to donate on behalf of her hometown of Berkeley Heights, New Jersey. She and her mother made a trip to campus prior to Welcome Weekend to drop off the books. Victoria is a graduate of Governor Livingston High School in Berkeley Heights and was very active as a member of the swim team, theater and as an officer on her community service committees. One of her proudest moments was holding a
virtual 5K last year. One of the teachers she had junior year had a daughter diagnosed with cancer. Through the virtual race, Victoria was able to raise $7,000 to help with the girl’s cancer treatment. Victoria chose her major, physical therapy, because, she said, “I am a people person and I love sports. I feel like PT will help me combine both and allows me to continue to help people.”

NOW
Physical Therapy Pro Bono Clinic to welcome the person that enters the clinic with the same warmth and compassion that permeates the University community.
If you’re at all like me, you probably enjoy those moments few and far between when you get a chance to move into a new place. A new dorm room, your own apartment, maybe your sibling’s room shortly after they pull away down the road off to college. For me, Christian Huckfeldt, and Katey Merenyi, current student administrators of The Leahy Pro Bono Physical Therapy Clinic, one such opportunity came just a few weeks ago when we set foot in the clinic for the first time in about 18 months. As we moved around shiny new treatment tables that had not yet gotten the chance to support a patient, organized assistive devices, wheelchairs and dumbbells, lugged miscellaneous exercise tools out of the back of the closet, and moved cardio equipment, we pondered: how are we going to do this? To be honest, I’m not sure we quite knew whether that question applied more to arranging furniture and equipment or actually running the clinic with real patients once again. The excitement of starting a new chapter was accompanied by the challenge of wanting to get it right and, more importantly, the duty we had to the patients that would shortly arrive at 230 Kressler Court for care.
The most difficult and yet exhilarating part of redecorating a new space is the moment you can step back and think, “I think…that did it. Now it’s finished.” The presence of patients in the clinic is the final touch that makes everyone’s effort worthwhile. Patients receive free, thorough, evidence-based care supervised by a licensed physical therapist. Faculty volunteers give back to the community and connect classroom material to clinical practice for student volunteers. Doctor of physical therapy students get the chance to apply and practice their clinical skills with peer mentorship, gain confidence treating patients, and grow their cultural competence and empathy. At the center of it all is the call to care — welcoming those whom we encounter in their vulnerability and treating them with reverence and grace. There’s a precious balance in all of this as we weigh our excitement to help with sincere consideration for the situations our patients find themselves in. As we settle into our new space, it’s obvious when we get it right. It looks like second nature, feels like comfort, and lends itself to the reason we’re there in the first place. At home, it may be tranquility. At the office, it may be productivity. At the clinic, we hope it’s a little of both, augmented by the unmistakable healing quality of human touch By Nicholas Capobianco, Doctor of Physical Therapy Student For more information about volunteering or scheduling an appointment, give us a call at 570.941.6563 or send us an email at LeahyPTClinic@gmail.com.

For some, the clinic is their only access to health care with the capability of breaking down language barriers with translators and offering services that simply won’t turn them away. The four-year, pre-college mentorship program began for the new participants with a two-week summer institute, which took place on the University’s campus in July. The University of Success is an academic and enrichment program designed to provide academic, social and cultural enrichment to area high school students. The program’s ultimate goal is to assist participating students to successfully complete high school and gain entrance into a college or university. Students enter the program at the completion of the eighth grade and continue through their high school years. The summer institute provides learning experiences designed to engage the students in creative thinking, problem solving and communication through activities that expose students to concepts in various academic disciples. The summer program featured presentations by University faculty, staff and students as well

as counselors from Lackawanna County Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center. At the institute, students learned about alternate renewable energy sources, sustainability, climate change, physics, neurobiology research and neurological disorders, among other topics. The institute included field trips to Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC) in Pike County and the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. The students also volunteered for a cleanup project at the Advocacy Center and helped to water plants in the Community Garden on the University’s campus. Following the summer institute, the students meet monthly throughout their four years in high school. The University of Success, offered free of charge to participants, is funded almost entirely by corporate and foundation grants. Donors to the program include AT&T; BB&T Bank; The Dime Bank; Fidelity Bank; Charles A. Frueauff Foundation; Carl and JoAnne Kuehner; Medico Industries; Mitsubishi Chemical Advanced Materials, Inc.; Overlook Estate Foundation; Peoples Security Bank and Trust; PPL Foundation; Lisa C. Thomas, M.D.; and Waste Management.

More than 550 people participated in the United States Conference on disAbility, held virtually on October 14. This year marked the 20th anniversary of the conference, which was presented by The University of Scranton’s J.A. Panuska College of Professional Studies and Edward R. Leahy Jr. Endowment; the AllOne Foundation; and the Autism Collaborative Centers of Excellence (ACCE). This is the third year that the conference’s theme was centered on autism, and the second consecutive year that the conference was held virtually, free of charge. The conference, themed “Exploring Autism Across the Spectrum: Building Inclusive Communities – Year III,” drew attendees from 30 states coast to coast, as well as Hawaii and Alaska; four other countries; and throughout the state of Pennsylvania.

Conference on disAbility Marks 20th Year
Dr. Rebecca Spirito Dalgin and Dr. Lori Bruch, conference co-chairs; and Dr. Dr. Debra Pellegrino, PCPS dean, celebrated the 20th anniversary of the U.S. Conference on disABILITY.

The 20th Anniversary of the U.S. Conference on disABILITY at The University of Scranton was celebrated in grand style. We are so grateful to our outstanding donors, presenters and 550 participants for their generosity and kindness of spirit. Special appreciation to these individuals: Dr. Lori Bruch and Dr. Rebecca Dalgin (Co-Chairs of this conference), Ed and Patricia Leahy (Honorary Co-Chairs), Valarie Clark (Director of Printing & Mailing Services), Vikki Lawhon (Graphic Designer), Raymond Schwenk (Assistant Dean of PCPS), Meg Hambrose (Director of Corporate & Foundation Relations), Dr. Erin Dunleavy (Autism Hub Services), Carol Fanhnestock (Office Manager and Secretary to the PCPS Dean), Elizabeth Geeza (Conference & Events Coordinator), and Jason Oakey and Jason Wimmer (IT Services). The last three years we have been grateful to our partnership with the AllOne Foundation and the ACCE Collaborative.
This year’s conference included a keynote address by Maria Davis–Pierre, founder and CEO of Autism In Black, Inc., and licensed mental health counselor, who looked at autism from a cultural perspective. Award-winning artist Devin Wildes, who was diagnosed with autism when he was four years old, and his mother, AJ Paron-Wildes, a design consultant in health care and education, shared their inspirational story. The conference also included a panel discussion of “Dads Making a Difference” with Jose Velasco (moderator), vice president of product development for SAP and U.S. ambassador of Autism at
The conference also included pre-recorded sessions on curriculum and inclusive classrooms and first responder training, as well as panel discussions with employees with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), with the ACCE Grant Founders Panel about creative collaborations, and a discussion with the Council of State Administrators of Vocational Rehabilitation/National Employment Team business partners. Edward R. and Patricia Leahy served as honorary co-chairs for the conference, which they helped to establish 20 years ago. Conference co-chairs were Rebecca Spirito Dalgin, Ph.D., director of the University’s Rehabilitation Counseling program, and Lori Bruch, Ed.D., chair of the University’s Counseling and Human Services department. “We established the endowment as a way to remember our son and do something to help children with disabilities,” said Scranton alumnus and benefactor Edward Leahy ’68, H’01. “Providing a quality education, proper resources and access to qualified professionals will empower individuals with disabilities to secure high-quality employment, live independently in the community, and share fully in the American dream,” said Patricia Leahy at the inaugural U.S. Conference on disAbility in 2002.
