Be A Plastics Detective! Be a Plastics Detective and help us source unnecessary plastic items across campus. Take a photo and submit to @Environment_UoW or environment@winchester.ac.uk with relevant details and why you think it can be eliminated. Reduced reliance on single use plastics has many benefits, such as reducing waste, the danger to wildlife posed by plastics and disrupting the plastics supply chain. Back in 2019, the University undertook a single-use plastics audit that identified 35 single-use plastics items that we are removing. We’re committed to removing unnecessary plastics by the end of 2021. A new Single Use Plastics Intranet Page within Energy & Environment details what we are doing and you can help. We’re also going to work toward the Surfer’s Against Sewage Plastic Free Communities accreditation. If you have a suggestion to remove unnecessary plastic, do let us know by email: environment@winchester.ac.uk
Free4AllUoW Did you know that any surplus food from catering is given away to people who need it? This can be for all sorts of reason and instead of throwing away food that could be eaten, we can give it away to people who need it, also reducing our food waste. The fridge is located on Level 3 on the King Alfred Centre, next to the Food Hall. To use the fridge, just follow Free4AllUoW on Snapchat. More information on the intranet catering pages

Food Waste Recycling Trial in Halls As part of Food Waste Action Week, food waste bins are being trialled from today in 3 Halls of Residence: Burma Road Student Blocks D&E and West Downs Student Village Block 1-27. Food caddies are being provided to flats with a larger food bin in the waste area. Students are being asked to collect their food waste separately and take it down to the food waste bin.
Food Waste Recycling Off Campus For those off Campus, you can still take action! Producing food requires significant resources including land, energy and water. Globally, 25–30% of total food produced is lost or wasted, and food waste is estimated by the IPCC to contribute 8-10% of total man-made greenhouse gas emissions. https://bit.ly/37MT7vS Visit #FoodWasteActionWeek
