Every computer scientist must have an awareness of computational thinking, a concept which encompasses both algorithmic thinking and evaluation. In this taster session, we will investigate how computer scientists develop algorithms and then test their effectiveness. You will be trying to solve three problems: the knights tour, the tour guide problem, and the Königsberg bridge problem. We will be reducing these problems into representations which attempt to make them easier to understand and resolve.

Animal Welfare & Society
Are dogs, cats, and rats sentient, and should they be protected by laws? There is currently much media attention on animal sentience. Do animals feel pleasure, pain, and boredom? Can dogs feel sad, chimpanzees be embarrassed, and elephants grieve? This session explores animal sentience and the current debate in the UK. There will be time for questions about the course and we will have a current Animal Welfare & Society student to provide a student’s perspective.

An interactive session focussing on either biological or social anthropology, depending on the academic’s specialism. The biological anthropology session will use casts of primate skulls and early human fossils, from ‘Lucy’ to the Neanderthals, to explore human evolution through skeletal anatomy. The social anthropology session will explore anthropological ideas of gift exchange and get participants to reflect on their own ideas of gifting in today’s society.

What happened to the two royal princes in the Tower in 1483 and the extent of the involvement of their uncle, who took the throne as Richard III that summer, is one of the great mysteries of English history. History (Modern Focus)
In 1859, after a life of adventures throughout the Hispanic world, a British naturalist published a book that shook the scientific community to its core and posed a series of profound dilemmas that drove a wedge between religion and science which has somehow survived to this day. This lecture will explore the historical context of Charles Darwin’s ‘On the Origin of Species´ and will assess their implications for existing notions of social hierarchy, race, gender and sexuality. There may be also a chance to discuss its enduring impact on concepts of national and international law, on politics and on popular culture in general as expressed through works of literature, caricatures, newspaper articles, music, photography, and the movies

In this session we’ll explore the ethical questions raised by “neuroscience-based mind reading,” or using brain imaging technology to gain information about people’s thoughts and mental states. We shall consider how philosophical and religious approaches might help us think about these ethical questions.

Professional Policing
At 6pm on Tuesday 29th September 1829, 600 officers of the 'new' police set out to patrol the streets of London for the first time. But over two thousand years earlier, Magistrates in Classical Athens could draw on the services of the first 'new' police within a democratic society. We know that there were 300 of these 'new' officers, the 300 'Scythian Archers' that formed the first new police in Classical Athens over two thousand years ago. This presentation gives an overview of the new Professional Policing degree and explores the topic of policing yesterday and today.

We have a variety of bus routes running throughout the day. The details of where these mini buses will run are below. These fill up on a first come first served basis so you may have to wait in a short queue, and we will do everything we can to keep wait times to a minimum. You can get on and off at any point on the loop.
Physiotherapy Leaving the Greta Thunberg statue at 11am, 12pm, 1pm, and 2pm (Number 28 on your map). Come and take a tour of our Physiotherapy suites lead by our Physiotherapy Course Champions. The walk to the suites will take approximately 15 minutes. If you have any accessible needs, please liaise with the Course Champion upon arrival at the Greta Thunberg statue. They will be able to direct you to the nearest accessible transport and meet you at the suites. Please note – all tour groups will consist of 8 to 10 students and their families. Please arrive early to ensure you can make the tour.

Accommodation To enter University accommodation, we must ask that you provide proof of a negative lateral flow test once you reach the accommodation block, even if you have been double vaccinated (as detailed in the reminder email). To view accommodation, simply follow the map toward the accommodation of your choice. There will be staff and Student Ambassadors there to greet you, and current students will be ready to show you their homes.
Queens Road Student Village Number 18 on your map This is a purpose-built residential development, consisting of 399 en-suite rooms arranged in flats of three to nine rooms with shared kitchens. St Elizabeth’s Hall and Beech Glade Number 21 and 2 on your map Each hall is a traditional hall of residence set up with rooms arranged along communal corridors with shared bathrooms and kitchenettes at various points. Many rooms boast beautiful views across Winchester and the South Downs, and all rooms are larger than average single study bedrooms. West Downs Student Village Number 29 on your map Located behind the Winchester Business School and our new West Downs Centre, there are over 650 bedrooms in houses of six to ten rooms. There is a mixture of en-suite and shared facility. Burma Road Student Village Number 4 on your map Burma Road consists of 408 en-suite rooms arranged in flats of six to eight with shared kitchens. We also have two one-bedroom family flats, and six bedrooms (and kitchens) adapted for wheelchair users. Cathedral Point and Riverside Way Not available to view this Open Day. These properties are approved University nominated or referred accommodation, owned and managed by an experienced independent company. Both are offsite and comprise approximately 250 en-suite study bedrooms, arranged in flats of between six to eight students, as well as 61 studio flats. There is also a large communal space for all residents to use, and the management team often arrange a wide variety of social events to include all residents. Winchester Sport & Leisure Park We will be running tours of the two neighbouring sports facilities, the brand-new Leisure facility and the University owned Sports Stadium in Winchester City Centre. The leisure centre boasts a 50m pool, 200 station fitness suite, studios and an 8-court sports hall. The Sports Stadium offers floodlit competition standard 8-lane athletics track and a full size All Weather Pitch. Both facilities are home to some of our Sports courses and our Student Union sports teams. Student Union Whilst on your self-guided tour, make sure to stop by Winchester Student Union (Number 12 on your map) to explore the building and speak to one of our students! The SU is a membership organisation run for and by the student population of the University of Winchester and exists to represent all students at the University. The SU runs events, sports teams, and societies, and is a one-stop shop for advice and support. The Chapel and Sacred Spaces Across our quarters, we have many sacred spaces for meditation and contemplative practice, that are available to visit during this Applicant Open Day. The Chapel (Number 6 on your map) is a RIBA award winning restored building in the middle of King Alfred Campus. Our Contemplation Space is found at the West Downs Centre (Number 28 on your map) and plays host to personal meditation pods and a contemplative centre.
