T h e T O P R A N ewsletter – K eeping members in T ouc h

In this issue... Seeing the diversity of topics planned for the TOPRA Annual Symposium (see page 2) reinforces what I love most about my job – which is always dynamic, covers many facets of science, and is never dull. Our new Head of Membership, Duncan, talks of the forthcoming new member database and website on page 3. This is exciting news, especially if you can’t get to symposia or regular local meetings. I was impressed by the worldwide nature of the new members this month (back page) from the isles of Scotland, west to Canada and east to Russia and all points between. The leaves are turning here in Glasgow but I have always found Autumn to be a time of good changes – the Symposium, the Awards and plans for celebrations of 10 years are to come. Talking of which, we would like to hear about your memorable TOPRA moments. For example, did you meet your partner at a TOPRA course? Do we have any second generation TOPRA members? How has participating in TOPRA enriched your working life? Ishbel MacDonald, co-editor

Anniversaries ahead!

A message from Patrizia Nestby, TOPRA President With most of us having returned from our summer holidays, now is the time we start planning our remaining activities until the end of the year and begin thinking about next year. The 10th TOPRA Annual Symposium will soon take place – and it is a fantastic achievement that TOPRA will be celebrating its first decade as The Organisation for Professionals in Regulatory Affairs in January 2014. I have been involved in the Symposium Working Party since 2005 and each time it has been a very rewarding experience. Not only has it helped me keep up to date with a wide range of areas in regulatory affairs, being part of the TOPRA community who bring together this great event and then meeting up with contacts and colleagues at the conference itself is a pleasure. Without any doubt this year’s Symposium will again be informative and enjoyable – to find out more see the article overleaf or go to www. toprasymposium.org. As part of the programme, the TOPRA

Board will give a presentation introducing who we are, what we have achieved so far and what the exciting near future will bring for TOPRA members. I do hope I will see you there in October. Next year, when TOPRA officially celebrates its 10th birthday, I shall be heading the Symposium Working Party and I look forward to hearing your feedback from this year’s event to help us make our plans for the 11th Annual Symposium, which is to be held in Brussels.

Watch this space Returning to our 10th birthday celebrations, we will be sharing news of how we intend to mark this special occasion over the coming months so please look out for announcements. The Regulatory Rapporteur editorial team is working on a 10-year timeline article noting significant events and regulatory

changes over the years. This is due to be published in the January 2014 issue. As a TOPRA member, please make a note in your diary to attend the Annual Meeting/ Extraordinary General Meeting(EGM) scheduled in the afternoon of the 27 November, preceding the TOPRA Annual Lecture and Awards at the Institute of Directors in London [see article on page 3]. In addition to providing an overview of the TOPRA strategy and finances, we will reveal the results of the elections for the vacant Board positions together with proposed changes to the constitution. With so much to look forward to in the TOPRA calendar, I wish everyone a productive and enjoyable rest of the year.

Doctoral developments TOPRA is delighted to announce that the contract for the TOPRA PhD in Regulatory Affairs has been signed with Cardiff University and that we already have interest from a number of possible students. This PhD programme is a research-based degree which can be studied part time over a 5-year period. Details of the terms and conditions and how to apply will be on the TOPRA website or available from our Postgraduate Administrator, Kay Wood (kay@topra.org). The photo shows TOPRA Executive Director Lynda Wight and Professor Sam Salek, Director of the Welsh School of Pharmacy Centre for Socioeconomic Research and Chair of Postgraduate Taught Board of Studies and Boards of Examiners of Cardiff University at the contract signing ceremony.

We make it our goal to publish as quickly as possible any information that we consider may have an impact on the activities of regulatory professionals and other interested parties to grant them predictability for their activities.’ Read the full transcript of this interview for an insight into the agency’s views on the latest regulatory developments at https:// www.topra.org/infarmedinterview.

NEWS FROM THE TOPRA MEMBERSHIP TEAM Head of Membership, Duncan Judd, gives the inside track on member developments in the first of his monthly updates Since joining TOPRA in May, the past few months have introduced me to the world of regulatory affairs. From speaking to attendees of several TOPRA In and SPIN events, I can see that TOPRA members are very passionate about regulatory affairs and their professional body. Encouragingly, they are very complimentary of TOPRA’s ethos and how it works to engage and bring the community of members together. One of the main strengths of TOPRA is its ability to facilitate neutral and independent discussion for members both in a face-toface and virtual context, providing members with a unique opportunity to participate in discussion and hear various opinions and perspectives. Members engage in discussion via the SPINs, which range from medical devices to CMC and veterinary science. And, after attending several SPIN meetings, I can see what a wealth of knowledge can be shared and how it helps members keep ahead in an ever-changing environment.

TOPRA has seen growth across Europe with an increase in members in Ireland, Switzerland and the UK . One of my strategic aims for the next few years is to broaden membership internationally by continually illustrating how essential it is to keep up-to-date with regulatory science whether you work with EU regulations or global regulatory affairs on a daily basis.

Make a difference

So how does TOPRA benefit you, I hear you ask? Well you can benefit not only by joining a SPIN or local TOPRA In network but also by volunteering. Members who volunteer to speak at courses or conferences or participate in their working parties often say this really boosts their opportunities. It also shows a dedication and commitment to healthcare regulatory affairs that often inspires other members to do the same. This helps TOPRA to continue to promote professionalism and provide high-quality training opportunities. Now we are in September, it’s a good

time to let you know of some of the developments that the office team and I have been working on. We are actively investing in our members and the professional body which you enjoy. In the next few months and throughout 2014, we will explain in detail the developments and improvements that will take place. One of the most significant improvements will be the implementation of a new member database and website at the beginning of 2014. This new system will allow you to engage and interact with other members, access information via your own ‘dashboard’ and store your own information on your account as well as access various other member-only benefits. If you want to know more about how to get involved or how to volunteer please e-mail me – duncan@topra.org – or meet me in person at the Annual Symposium. I look forward to updating you all on the next stage of developments with your membership soon.
