few pairs of matching briefs will also keep costs down.

Have a sort out

Get the right support

Organise your underwear drawer into categories by colour, type or even material. Throw out what doesn’t fit and/or you no longer wear and identify gaps in your collection to be filled.

Know your style

If there’s a design you like and that fits perfectly, stick with it. If you want to mix it up a bit, then buy it in a variety of colourways, so it doesn’t feel like you’re wearing the same thing every day.

Stock up on the basics

A good nude bra, or no-VPL briefs are the mainstays of any underwear collection. These are the pieces you'll reach for again and again, so it’s worth investing in a few sets to enable you to wash and wear.

Choose sets over singles

Picking up the odd bra or pants here and there might be cheaper but matching sets are so much chicer. Take advantage of mid and end of season sales. Buying one bra with a

Many women default to a t-shirt bra, but they’re not always the best option. The most supportive bras are seamed or cut-and-sewn bras, but because they're often made from mesh or lace, many women avoid them. Experiment and have fun.

Don’t get hung up on size It’s quite normal to have multiple sizes of bras. The size you wear in a strapless bra may not be the same as you wear in a plunge; or the size you wear in one brand may be different to another. Roll with it.

Focus on comfort

There's really no need to suffer in silence by wearing so-called sexy styles that scratch and chaff. Wear something that feels comfortable and gives you the support you need. You’ll look and feel great too.

Consider your delicates

When buying briefs, synthetic materials like nylon, polyester, and spandex

trap heat and moisture, the conditions yeast thrive in. By contrast cotton is breathable and wicks away moisture.

Wear something that feels comfortable and gives you the support you need. You'll look and feel great too. Create an emergency kit

Think bra extender, low back converter clips, racer-back bra strap holder, bra strap pads, nipple cover and fashion tape. Perfect for resolving all those last-minute coverage and comfort problems.

Prolong the life of your lingerie

Use a mesh bag in your washing machine. The bag prevents the contents from coming into contact with the rest of the wash, while also allowing your delicates to move freely for the same thorough wash.

Style

Swap

The ultimate game changer. Reinvent yourself with one of our style savvy hair fixes.

COLOUR You don’t need a major revamp to update your look. A subtle colour boost will have the same impact. When Kate Winslet won her Best Actress Oscar, she opted for honey blonde tones, taking her from Hollywood starlet to serious actress. Not ready for a complete change? Try a sprinkling of face framing high or low lights. From centre to side, a change in parting can do wonders for your face and look. Simple side partings look great with updos and styling your hair down. We loved Amanda Seyfried’s side swept style at the London Premiere of Les Miserables. Try it yourself and see how life changing a parting can be.

FRINGE The humble fringe is a timeless accessory which can switch up your look in a matter of seconds. Felicity Jones is transformed from fresh faced beauty to femme fatale with this fuller fringe. Whether blunt, wispy, micro or choppy, there’s a fringe for everyone.

PARTING

LENGTH If you’ve always had the same mid length style, going shorter is the perfect fix. Moving from bob to boy crop gave Michelle Williams’ confidence and career a much-needed boost. Exciting, empowering and edgy, this is a nofuss, low-maintenance option. And if you hate it…it’ll always grow back!

ASSETS Year after year you go all in with your New Year’s resolutions, but they just don’t seem to stick. Slow and steady wins the race, says Rebecca Watts at TheStudios40.

The key to making your goals happen is changing one habit at a time, conquering that new good habit before moving onto the next. And if there’s one change everyone should start with, it’s increasing their water intake to 2-3 litres a day. Here’s 5 good reasons why…

1

Water aids the efficient functioning of our body. It’s involved in virtually every process including vitamin and mineral transportation. By ensuring that your body is functioning at its best, it will work for you, instead of against you.

2

only does water fill you up, Not potentially reducing over-eating,

3

studies have shown that increased water consumption can have a positive effect on increasing calories burned and improving the efficiency of fat metabolism.

water intake can Insufficient lead to digestion problems. If we don’t get enough water, our defence mechanisms kick in and our body stores it, leading

to retention and bloating. By drinking more water your body lets go of what it’s been holding.

4

dehydration Common symptoms include lack of

5

energy, fatigue, and headaches. These symptoms can have a significant impact on our life, effecting our performance, moods and our long term physical and mental health.

water is one of the Drinking quickest ways to clear your mind and refocus. If you’re struggling to concentrate, drink 2 glasses of water and go for a 10-minute walk. You’ll be surprised how different you feel.

When creating new habits consistency can be tricky, so here’s some tips to get you started: Start your day the right way. Set yourself a challenge that you must drink 2 glasses of water before you can have your first morning coffee. Measure your glass. Select a water glass and see how much water it holds and work out how many glasses you need to consume in a day, try and get at least half of them done by mid-day.

water to existing habits, such as brushing your teeth, going to the toilet or maybe drinking tea – drink two glasses of water while you wait for the kettle to boil. Get into a routine. Try making some routines. Have a glass of water before eating and a glass after, or a glass every two hours. Create a desk rule. Fill a 1 or 2 litre water bottle and keep on your desk. You must finish the water before you can leave for the day. Drink at room temperature. Many find drinking water at room temperature easier than cold water. Buying a filter dispenser will allow the water to set to room temperature and will taste better too. Add flavour. If you get bored or find plain water unpalatable, simply add some natural flavouring. Citrus fruits, cucumber or mint all work well. Get technical. If you really struggle with remembering, set some phone reminders, or alternatively try a water app. Free apps such as Daily Water, Water Alert, Waterlogged include reminders and trackers to help keep you hydrated throughout the day.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

Little

THINGS So you’ve arrived in 2019! You’re already on the cabbage soup diet, paid for the gym membership and have set yourself endless goals. Feeling depressed already? Hold on a jiffy, says Sarah Mettrick, there’s easier ways to combat the winter blues. Isn't winter depressing enough without adding extra pressure and demands on yourself? If it all seems too much, don’t beat yourself up, go small! Little things make a big difference. If feeling happier is on your to-do list, try these quick and easy ways to pep yourself up.

Play your fave feel good tunes Never fails. Crank up the volume, dive into the groove and just you try to feel depressed. Impossible.

Help someone

Not only does the recipient benefit, so do you. It’s a win win. Studies show that helping others makes us happier and even healthy. Volunteer, donate, listen, chat to the old man at the bus top, visit your Gran. It doesn't matter, just give… and you will get.

Don’t compare

A futile pastime. What we see of people in the outside world is usually an edited version of the reality. We all have our demons, so don't look out, look in. That’s where changes happen. You have all you need to be unique and wonderful.

Get outside

Fresh air. The smell, the cold air on your cheeks. Do you want to feel calmer, have a sharper mind, feel more energised and joyful. Just open the door…

Be grateful

You know the saying - “If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone else’s, we’d grab ours back.” There is always something to be grateful for. Ditch envy, regrets and resentment. Savour your blessings, be truly grateful and feel positive emotions multiply.

Say Hello

Connect with your fellow man. Everybody deserves to be acknowledged. Smile, say “Hello”, feel good.

Laugh

Put on a comedy, do something silly, spend time with funny people. Failing all that just laugh. Yep, just start laughing. Keep going. Don’t stop... and

hey presto you will become hysterical (easier to do with a close friend). Release the endorphins!

Cry

I know, I’ve just told you to laugh but crying can be beneficial too. There are reasons for saying “Have a good cry”. Crying releases toxins, reduces stress, self-soothes and can elevate your mood. Go weep if you need to.

Let it Go

Neighbours cut the hedge too short? Your husband painted the living room beige instead of latte? You’ve made your feelings clear now breathe, forgive and move on. Angry people can’t be happy people.

Read

Put down your mobile. Turn off the TV. Absorb the silence and sink into a good book. Pleasure personified.

Commit

Commit to being happy. Happiness isn't something that happens to you, it’s something you decide to be. Put the work in. Do things you love, spend time with uplifting people. You can’t escape from yourself so be someone you want to be with. Everything you think is being overheard by you so choose to think wisely, positively and kindly. Take care of you. SHAKES Revive your boring breakfast with a vibrant shake or smoothie bowl.

GREEN BREAKFAST SMOOTHIE Serves: 2 Ingredients: 1 ripe avocado, skinned and stoned 1 banana 80g green seedless grapes 80g baby spinach 1 tsp chia seeds Method: Place the avocado, banana, grapes and spinach in a blender.

BERRY & BANANA SMOOTHIE BOWLS

Pour into 2 glasses and serve straight away.

Serves: 2 Ingredients: 2 small bananas, roughly chopped 100g frozen mixed berries 2 medjool dates, pitted and roughly chopped 4 mint leaves ½ x 500g pot natural organic yogurt 80g fresh blueberries and blackberries Small handful spelt flakes

Cook’s tip: Smoothies are a great way to use over-ripe bananas. Peel, slice and freeze them then use straight from the freezer.

Method: Put the bananas, frozen berries, dates, mint and yogurt in a small high-speed blender.

Add 400ml water and whizz until smooth and thick. Add the chia seeds and pulse until blended.

Whizz until completely smooth. Divide the smoothie between 2 bowls. Top with the fresh berries and spelt flakes. Serve immediately.

Cook's tip: You can top the smoothie bowls with other fruits – try sliced mango and kiwi fruit instead of berries for a tropical twist. The spelt flakes add crunch but toasted pumpkin seeds or flaked almonds also work well.

Safety

FIRST With features such as seatbelts, airbags and safety glass all coming as standard in modern cars, it’s easy to take car safety for granted. But while they protect you if you’re involved in an accident, what if you could reduce the likelihood of the accident happening in the first place? We explain the range of safety features currently available.

Lane Departure Alert (LDA)

Recognises line markings on the road ahead and judges if you’re unintentionally drifting into an adjacent lane. If you are leaving your lane without signalling, a driver alert is given. Upgraded versions also recognise the road edge on straight roads without lane markings.

Road Sign Assist (RSA)

Monitors the road signs ahead, displaying useful information such as the current speed limit or overtaking restrictions. The system also provides a visual and acoustic warning if you are not following the road sign indication.

Automatic High Beam (AHB)

Designed to optimise visibility during night driving for all road users. A camera detects the lights of oncoming vehicles and leading traffic while also monitoring the brightness of streetlights. It switches

Safety is a crucial factor in choosing a new car and thankfully due to the latest sophisticated systems, new cars have never been safer.

automatically between high and low beam for safer night-time driving.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)

Keeps you at a minimum pre-set distance from the vehicle in front. If this distance falls, the system reduces your speed and eventually the brakes will be applied, and brake lights activated. If the distance increases again, it will gradually accelerate until you return to your chosen cruising speed.

Pre-Collision System (PCS)

Uses radar to detect vehicles. If it detects a pending crash, the system alerts drivers to brake. Once the driver applies the brakes, the PCS helps by increasing brake power. Some vehicles also include pedestrian daytime and night-time detection and cyclist daytime detection.

Emergency Assistance

Airbag sensors register an accident, alerting the car to make a 999 call (eCall). The emergency services call centre receives the call and the exact location of the vehicle, prompting an operator to call. If there’s no response, emergency services are deployed.

But with more and more brands offering vehicle safety technology, which ones are coming out on top? Here’s our pick of the best: Toyota Safety Sense – offers a range of new active safety systems designed to keep you and your passengers out of harm's way. At low speeds Safety Sense can help prevent collisions entirely, while at higher speeds, it aims to lessen the severity of any impact. The availability of the Toyota Safety Sense varies according to the model and grade of each vehicle. Subaru Eyesight® - a package that features several driver assist technologies. It monitors traffic movement, optimizes cruise control, and warns you if you sway outside your lane. Said to give the driver an “extra set of eyes” on the road. Honda Sensing® - an exclusive intelligent suite of safety and driverassistive technologies designed to alert you to things you might miss while driving including lane watch, blind spot and cross traffic monitoring technologies. Honda Sensing® features are available or standard on most Honda vehicles. Whatever system you choose, vehicle safety technology will help you make better decisions, making you a better, safer driver. LEAVING

Carrie Sarah Jessica Parker found an eternal place in TV fans’ hearts worldwide in Sex and the City – but her latest work shows she’s enjoying upsetting expectations a decade on from Carrie’s on-screen bow.

LIFE & WORK

Some actors often find themselves inextricably linked to a character in a way that can blur the line between fact and fiction. Sarah Jessica Parker is perhaps a prime example of this, with her cosmopolitan girl-about-New York image coinciding perfectly with her most famous fashion-conscious alter-ego, Carrie Bradshaw. Even now, a decade after the Sex and the City girls last appeared together in their less-thanacclaimed second film, Parker’s name is synonymous with her Emmy-winning stint during the series’ heyday. It’s no secret that the star herself has a great fondness for her most recognisable work – her desire to revisit Carrie in a much-hyped but seemingly shelved third film attest to that. But in pining for that fabulous foursome’s fashionable return, it’s easy to miss the fact that Parker is undergoing a sort of a career renaissance of late. “I think it took time for people to make the adjustment to seeing me as this very different kind of woman,” the 53-year-old nods when discussing her recent TV show, Divorce, and its main character’s dissimilarities to her perpetually upbeat protagonist of yesteryear. “Certain audiences may have been surprised, but they responded really well to the show in general. Some people might have missed the jubilant nature of Carrie and think Frances is unlikeable. My response is that is that I'm an actor, and I always want to play people who are new and different to me. I shouldn't worry about likability but about portraying a woman who is very real and complex. Frances’ life is messy like that of most people and we showed her making good and bad decisions. But I think that's much more enlightening and powerful

to present someone in that light because it's reflective of the way people really are in life.” That’s not to say that Parker has become altogether serious, but rather that, like so many of her cinematic colleagues, interesting and thoughtprovoking roles are beginning to arrive more regularly. If Divorce saw her trading style for substance in many ways, her latest film, Here and Now goes even further into uncharted territory as a successful jazz singer faced with a terminal medical prognosis.

We're happily burdened by wanting to do right by the female stories that we're developing. "Working on this film has been one of the realest, most humbling of experiences," she enthuses. "One of the things that appealed to me about this story is that it scared me. I wasn't sure how I would be able to express everything that is going on inside her, but I'm very glad I decided to do it."

Here and Now will also feature a hitherto unseen facet of Parker’s talents. “I do my own singing, for better or worse,” she nods. “I enjoyed that moment because it was also a different way for her to express what she's going through. Music has occupied such a huge part of her life to the detriment of her personal relationships. So, I loved being able to play that part of her.” Indeed, her latest on-screen venture’s offers a chance of seeing Parker as we’ve never seen her before in a far more familiar setting: The Big Apple. But where Carrie’s city was full of fresh experiences and glitzy dreams, Parker “loved the fact that we were able to shoot New York in a very realistic way

that shows the less forgiving and tougher sides of this city” for Here and Now. And if any long-time fans are surprised by Parker’s recent career moves, they could do well to see her in the context of the sea change that has overcome the industry. From female-fronted smash hit Big Little Lies, to Parker’s own Divorce, shows are no longer shying away from the grittier details of everyday life for women. Experienced actresses are reaping the rewards both in front of and behind the camera, and Parker is no different: her production company ‘Pretty Matches’, which bought Here and Now to fruition, is notable in its entirely female staffing. “I can't say that the process of creating this group was intentionally to seek out only female hires,” she explains. “I think that what interests me is that I am a woman, I’m informed by my life experiences and what I see around me, around my female friends, or watching women in the world.” “What we’re hoping to do is tell whole stories, stories about everybody. But we are keenly interested in a woman’s point of view in stories. How is her story being told? And trying to find stories that haven’t been told but should be told [about] people who are marginalised or overlooked. We don’t spend a lot of time talking about responsibility, but I know we feel it. We’re happily burdened by wanting to do right by the female stories that we’re developing.” With Divorce renewed for a third season, it seems Parker’s creative resurgence looks set to continue – a testament to an actress instantly recognisable the world over, and yet now being given the chance to put her imaginative side fully in motion. "Every time that they call ‘cut’ on the camera, if I’m not carrying a bag as the character, I’ve hidden a book within arm’s length on the set," she reveals. "I like the idea of global voices. I like the idea of stories that are unfamiliar. I like learning about people different than myself."

Social support

Children are natural explorers, so it's important to embrace inquisitive minds and teach them how to discover new things independently. Where possible choose a nursery or pre-school that can also offer an outdoor approach to learning. This allows children a hands-on experience and is a completely different setting from a conventional classroom. Here, they can get involved in fishing, using tools and even building fires (under strict supervision, of course). Outdoor activities help children build confidence, make new friendships, and develop teamwork skills so they respect the feelings and thoughts of others. At home letting children play outdoors, or with friends away from their parents is a key part of creating independence. Obviously, safety is the main priority, so finding a secure and hazard-free place for them to play is crucial. As they grow up, allow them to play with their friends in a room by themselves, or continue their drawing while you start the cooking – the key is to provide reassurances with regular checks.

Handle the basics

Many parents are now keen for their children to be able to write their own name and accurately sound out words before the first day of primary school. However, not all children develop at the same speed and some require extra nurturing and support along the way. If your little one is struggling to form letters, you should try other creative methods rather than forcing them to sit down and write. Encourage the action through play – for example get them to trace letters in sand so they get used to the movements or using sticks or toys that are similar shapes to pencils, so they understand the idea of using ‘tools’ rather than hands.

shoes and coats on before going outside or tidy away toys after playing, not only creates a sense of responsibility and resilience, but also helps to move children away from requiring near-constant support. All these tasks help your little one build confidence in being able to do things by themselves, excellent preparation for being alone for a longer period when they reach school age. Every parent wants their child to thrive once they reach school and their formative years are important in building soft skills, such as independence, resilience and confidence. These traits will be useful throughout life, not only academically, but also helping to create strong friendships and learn new skills.

Joules

There are many ways that children get to grips with being independent. Exploring the outdoors, learning to tie their shoe laces, and making new friends. Carla Brindley, Manager at The Nursery, part of Loughborough Schools Foundation, explains the importance of learning this skill from an early age.

At home, you can encourage this behaviour through craft projects, such as drawing out large letters with glitter or crayons and pointing out where this letter fits into their name.

Building self-confidence

You can foster greater independence by encouraging your children to tackle more tasks at home. Being able to put URBAN FOX FEBRUARY 2019 37

Focal Point

Large pieces of art should be hung with the centre point at eye level. If you’re hanging multiple frames, position your favourite piece in the centre and work outwards. Leave 5-10cm between each one to give them space.

Don’t automatically position your art in the centre of the wall. A hanging wall collage that meanders across the wall at different heights will create visual interest. Alternatively centre your art above a side table or chair.

Low Hanging

Not all art needs to be hung. Instead put prints on the floor, on a sideboard or even on a shelf and lean against the wall. This will enable you to update your gallery whenever you choose, without the need to fill holes and repaint walls.

Mix & Match

The most interesting displays combine different styles of art. Start small by hanging abstract prints alongside travel photos in similar hues. If your furniture is modern, try hanging classic pictures for a truly curated look.

Creative Energy

Place your art where you can most enjoy it. If you work from home, hang some of your favourite prints above your desk. As well as looking amazing, it will generate a feeling of contentment and creativity, making you work more productively. URBAN FOX FEBRUARY 2019 45

2 Make an entrance

Hallways are often overlooked but can easily become unsightly. Hide away nonessentials and ensure coats, umbrellas and shoes are neatly stored. Even a new doormat can help your property stand out.

What if you could choose the title of a brand new musical and then see it performed instantly? That’s what is going to happen to one audience member when the East Midlands’ favourite musical improv team takes to the stage. When you arrive, you’ll be asked to write down the title of a musical that’s never been seen before. If yours is drawn out of the hat, Rhymes Against Humanity will perform a brand new, fully improvised musical immediately. No scripts, no conferring, no pre-planning, just totally spontaneous musical madness!

Inspired by the farces of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus (251-183 BC), the musical play tells the bawdy story of a slave named Pseudolus and his attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master woo the girl next door. Unfortunately (as the two find out when they pay a visit to Lycus), Philia has been sold to the renowned warrior Miles Gloriosus, who is expected to claim her very soon. What will they do next? Will a happy ending prevail for all? The plot displays many classic elements of farce, including puns, cases of mistaken identity and satirical comments on social class.

She’s A Good Boy is produced by Strike A Light and supported by Arts Council England, Pegasus Theatre, Battersea Arts Centre and Hawkwood College. Muddle Class promises to feature a wealth of new material about Jason growing up ‘working class’ then finding, over the years, that part of him has become ‘middle class’ - causing much confusion! Delivered with Jason’s amiable charm and captivating wit, this is a show not to be missed.

David Hare’s explosive new play, set in a very different 2018, portrays personal choices and their public consequences, through a twenty-year intimate friendship. Pauline Gibson is a junior doctor, who becomes the face of a campaign to save her local hospital. She’s thrust from angel of the NHS, to becoming an independent MP. In the Houses of Parliament, she crosses paths with her university boyfriend, Jack Gould, a stalwart Labour loyalist, climbing the ranks of the party. As media and public pressure mounts on Pauline to run for leadership of the Labour party, she faces an agonising decision. Recorded as part of the NT Live series.

PEOPLE & PLACES

New HORIZONS When it comes to holidays, sometimes it seems like the best Pace idea is to stick to something you know. But one small change If you spend your holidays slumped on a sun lounger, try getting up. You can transform your whole experience, says Kirsty France. don’t have to give up all your down Why not make this, the year you try something new? time. Just try having two or three Are you stuck in a travel rut? If your holidays are starting to blend into one, maybe it’s time for a change. These days you can hop on a flight to almost anywhere in the world. Once you get there you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to new and exciting activities. Here are just a few of the ways you could go on a voyage of discovery and change your holiday for the better.

Location

The simplest way to transform your holiday is to pick a different destination. Start with small steps. If you go to Majorca every year maybe try Ibiza instead. Or try somewhere that has a

completely different culture from the place you’re used to. If you usually choose a Mediterranean island head to Morocco. Changing your destination could also mean a shift in season. Long haul destinations like South Africa, New Zealand and Thailand get better weather between September and February. Or trade your summer sun for a winter ski break or a wind-swept beach in the UK.

Style

A new kind of accommodation can completely change your holiday. Swap your five-star hotel for a classic camper van or go self-catering. There are some gorgeous self-catering options out there and you don’t have to cook every night. A few pub dinners are absolutely essential. I love self-catering because convincing my kids to get dressed before breakfast is almost impossible. If you’re tempted by a holiday under canvas but worry it might be a bit basic, glamping gives you a compromise. You get a luxurious tent and a proper shower. Some sites have hot tubs too! There are glamping sites all over the world, from Southern California to a floating camp in Thailand.

active days during your week away. Go for a trek with a local guide or paddle down the river in a kayak. You’ll see your destination from a whole new angle. Maybe you’re the opposite and cram every holiday full of adrenaline sports or family hikes. Would it kill you to chill out a bit? Learning a new craft could help you relax and give you quality time with the kids. Or try an open top bus or boat tour for a couple of hours. You never know what you might see when you slow down a bit. This might sound like hard work. If you’re happy, why change? The truth is, changing your holiday can help you to see yourself in a whole new light. Getting more active on holiday helped me to realise that I’m braver than I thought I was, and now I’m much more willing to try new things. Making a change can give you a new perspective on your relationships too. My children love climbing trees so I joined in. Daily life normally involves chasing my kids on the school run, so laughing my head off trying to catch a four-year old who climbs like a monkey was utterly wonderful. I hope I’ve inspired you – what will you change this year? URBAN FOX FEBRUARY 2019 65

MY WAY

Secret skill

Home-made sloe gin!

Amy Hayward-Paine

“As a small business, I can offer a huge amount of passion and energy to my clients”, says birdonthewire communications’ Amy Hayward-Paine. I’m a farmer’s daughter and grew up in quite a remote part of Northamptonshire. I was really lucky to have fields, woods and streams to explore which gave me the love of the countryside that I still have today. Life in our house was very busy; I’ve got three sisters plus we had numerous cats, dogs and ponies to look after. My family has always been very social, and the farmhouse door was always open, whether it was George the postman delivering parcels…and local gossip, to various family members and friends. I did like to escape the family bustle and spent hours outside. When I went to senior school, I felt like my wings had been clipped a little after the freedoms of home and a small village school. But I developed a love of books and language, so I began to enjoy it more thanks to great teachers who tapped into my passion for creativity. I started out wanting to be a journalist and after working at various local radio stations, I was convinced that this was where I was headed. But on applying to Uni to study Media, I came across a degree in PR and realised that creatively it was a much better choice

for me. After three years at Exeter Uni, I never looked back! I’ve had a varied and enjoyable career, including working in the Nivea Press Office and in the Corporate Comms team at Waitrose Head Office. I’ve also dabbled in the wine and gin industry and have also worked with a number of top chefs, including James Martin, Sean Rankin and Brian Turner. My husband and I decided to move out of London around eight years ago and we arrived in Leicestershire after I was offered a job at a FTSE 250 tech business where I headed up the UK PR team. After a year I was promoted into the Marketing team to look after digital communications and Social Media and ended up leading its Global Team. The time came to move out of the corporate world. My daughter was two and I wanted a better work-life balance. I was lucky enough to hit the ground running with two clients and have developed the business over the last 18 months to offer Social Media and PR to small and medium sized businesses, locally, as well as in London and Nottingham. As a small business, I can offer a huge amount of passion and

Don’t follow the crowd One thing you’d change

I wish I’d travelled more energy to my clients but thanks to my career history, I can also deliver broad expertise and insight. I love being my own boss! I’m selfmotivated and am a massive list-maker which really helps. I love working in teams but equally comfortable on my own and get a buzz from doing a good job. I do have a good work life balance… but I love work and am at my laptop most evenings. I do however try to stop at 9pm! I’d like to offer a bigger digital solution going forward, so am looking at bespoke SEO support for new and existing clients, on top of the PR and Social Media packages already available. I’m also taking on a number of clients who want ad-hoc services like a one-off press launch or in-house training for their Social Media team. birdonthewire communications offers a range of solutions and I think 2019 will see more tailored activity being rolled out – which is really exciting!
