Holiday
HAIR
For frizz-free beach days and glossy sunny highlights sans effort, check out our lazy-girl guide to stress-free holiday hair.
NEW DO
The summer’s perfect for experimenting with new styles. For longer lengths a messy braid will keep hair under control and minimise sun exposure; while shorties should try the slicked back look using a UV protection gel. It looks amazing and will help avoid tan lines on your forehead.
PROTECT TO PERFECT
Whether your hair’s coloured or all natural, sunlight can bleach it. Use products formulated to shield your hair from the sun. We love the Kérastase Soleil range, it helps prevent chlorine and salt build-up, while your hair colour and fibres are protected from the sun’s damaging rays.
LESS IS MORE
If you’re already very blonde, have only minimal highlights before you go away. Even taking the extra care described here, your colour is likely to lift slightly and the last thing you want to do when you get back is pay for a full head of lowlights!
COVER UP
Wearing a hat is one of the best ways to protect your hair in the sun. Choose something which matches your beach look. Scarves, floppy hats and trilbies are all in vogue this summer. Bear in mind that the sun can shine through some fabrics, so wear a protective product underneath.
HOT, HOT, HOT
Indulge your hair with a homemade hot-conditioning treatment. Simply apply a generous amount of conditioner, lounge by the pool and let the sun do the rest. Wash out before you hit the local night spots for hair with ultra-shine.
ALL AT SEA
Swap your sea salt styling products, for the real thing. After swimming in the sea, braid your hair and leave to dry. For the evening, un-braid your hair, give it a quick shake and a spritz of spray and you will have perfect mermaid waves.
Boden
AIR TIME
Your hair will be exposed to heat throughout the day so prevent it drying out further by minimising how often you blow-dry. If you can’t travel without a hairdryer, then try to air dry for a while before blow drying to reduce the impact.
REVIVE & REVAMP
Good news! You can still use your ghd styler just remember to apply a heat protection cream or spray first. And avoid overdoing it by opting for a style that can be recycled. Structured curls one day can be manipulated to create tousled beach waves the next.
BE SMOOTH
Finally you could even consider a smoothing treatment before you go away. With the promise of frizzfree hair you can even leave the straighteners at home. Your hair will look great with the minimum amount of drying, curls will be more defined and less frizzy than before. URBAN FOX JUNE 2019 17

TO ENTER:
Simply email your name, address and contact telephone number to competitions@theurban-fox.co.uk inserting ‘Cowshed’ in the subject bar. Closing date for entries is Sunday 30 June 2019. Terms & Conditions: The winner will be drawn after the specified closing date. The Editor’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. The prize is non-transferable and no cash alternative is available. The competition may be withdrawn at any time.
Feet FIRST Trim
Use nail clippers and cut straight across the nail. Don’t go too short, and avoid cutting down at the corners, as this can lead to ingrown nails. Try filing your nails, if that’s easier.
Cuticles
Cuticles protect the nail bed, if they dry out, so will your nails. If you don’t have cuticle cream, corn wraps, lip balm or a good moisturiser will do the job.
File
Hard, cracked skin around the heels is very common. At least once a week use a foot file, emery board or pumice stone to gently rub away the hard skin.
Exfoliate
Get rid of surface dry skin cells and make your feet feel instantly smoother with an exfoliating peel, balm or mask. For dryer skin, use a sugar scrub. Avoid salt products as they can be dehydrating.
Prepare to be the source of some major sandal envy with our summer-ready footcare tips.
Moisturise
The heel is protected by thicker skin, which means that it's less penetrable. Apply a lotion or oil immediately after you shower and reapply just before bed. Add socks.
Protect
Don’t stop at the ankle put sun cream on your feet too. Not only does the skin on your feet and toes need protection, but nails are made of protein and are therefore vulnerable to sun damage.
Eat
Some foods can cause your feet to swell and become bloated. Avoid packaged foods which are high in salt and limit your sugar intake too.
Polish
From neutrals to brights, and two-tone to high-shine, there’s a nail trend for everyone this summer.
Have some fun and show off your individuality.
Breathe
Nails need to breathe, so have a break from nail polish for one week a month. This can also help prevent discoloration, particularly if you love those darker colours.
Support
Avoid wearing flip-flops for long periods of time. They don’t provide the right support and can cause arch and heel pain. Shop for shoes in the afternoon when your feet are at their largest.
Help
Pedicures are perfect for making your feet look pretty, but if yours need extra care and attention, visit a podiatrist who can offer a range of treatments to suit your specific needs. URBAN FOX JUNE 2019 21

Burn
FEEL THE
Going on holiday needn’t mean putting on weight, says Rebecca Watts from TheStudios40. Here’s 10 ways to have fun and avoid coming back with excess baggage.
FRISBEE
An ideal activity for those not wanting to participate in anything too serious. It’ll take about 2 hrs 30 mins to burn 500 kcals but it’ll be great fun and if done on the beach will be great for toning your thighs too.
PEDALO
Bored of sunbathing, then hire a pedalo. It’s a great workout - especially if you go against the tide – and the kids will love joining in too. Burning 500 kcals in approximately 1 hr 10 mins, this activity delivers good results.
LILO CRAWL
A slightly more novel way of burning calories on a lilo. Sitting with your legs either side of the lilo, use your arms to paddle. It not only burns calories but also offers a core workout. Make it more exciting with races or a tournament, although it’ll take 3 hrs 20 mins to burn 500 calories.
SIGHTSEEING
A great way of burning calories without really thinking about it. Opt for walking rather than the open top
bus and you’ll burn 500 kcals in around 2 hrs 20 mins. Exploring the beach can take over an hour off your time, by making it harder on your legs.
CYCLING
An alternative to walking, hire a bike. Join an organised sightseeing tour or go it alone. Either way you can expect to burn 500 kcals in 1 hr 45 mins, while learning more about your holiday destination. Bonus.
GOLF
Enjoy a round of golf at a local course. The walking, lifting and swinging all help to burn over 6 calories per minute, taking only 1 hr 20 mins to burn 500 calories. It’s best to play in the morning before it gets too hot.
WATER SPORTS
Take advantage of any all-inclusive water sports and burn calories while topping up your tan. To burn 500 kcals, snorkel for 1 hr 34 mins, water ski for 1 hr 19 mins, surf or windsurf for 1 hr 15 mins, kayak for 1 hr 34 mins, or swim in the sea for 1 hr 20 mins.
ROCK CLIMBING
For the ultra adventurous rockclimbing is a quick way to burn
calories, taking only 1 hr to burn 500 kcals. Whether your hotel has its own climbing wall, you head to a local centre or scale outdoor heights, always use the right equipment and follow safety advice.
DANCING
Burning calories does not need to be restricted to sports. Try a Salsa class, it’s a great workout, burning 500 kcals in about 1 hr 25 mins. After dark, get your dancing shoes on and dance off those Pina Coladas.
SEX
A fun activity for day or evening but no indecent exposure please! Unfortunately, the average session only burns 50 - 100 kcals, so you’d need to aim for 5-10 sessions a day, which isn’t for the fainthearted! Increase the intensity and you’ll burn more calories and spice up your love life too. Activity times for calories burned can vary from person to person, but you get the idea. Get active, have fun and keep the calories off. Happy Holidays! URBAN FOX JUNE 2019 23

URBAN FOX JUNE 2019 25
TOMATO & PUY LENTIL SALAD Preparation time: 15 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 1 small red onion, thinly sliced 1 tbsp white wine vinegar 250g puy lentils, cooked 100g radishes, thinly sliced 115g baby spinach 1 gherkin, finely diced 300g Jack Hawkins tomatoes 20g fresh dill, chopped roughly
For the dressing: Juice 1 lemon 2 tbsp olive oil 1 tsp Dijon mustard ½ tsp clear honey
3
Put the lentils, radishes, spinach, gherkin and soaked onions in a bowl and pour over the dressing. Toss everything together.
1
Place the onion in a small bowl, toss with the white wine vinegar and a pinch of salt then set aside.
4
2
Place all of the ingredients for the dressing in a screw-top jar and shake to mix.
Cut the tomatoes in half and then into thick slices and gently stir through the lentils with most of the fresh dill. Tip out onto a serving platter and scatter over the remaining dill to serve.
CHARRED BROCCOLI, CHORIZO & JALAPENO SALAD Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 15 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 1 fresh jalapeno chilli, sliced 1 tbsp cider vinegar Pinch caster sugar 1 head broccoli, cut into small florets 1 tbsp olive oil, plus extra to drizzle 95g chorizo 150g low-fat Greek yogurt 8-10 shakes tabasco green pepper sauce 28g coriander, ½ finely chopped and ½ roughly chopped 90g rocket 1 avocado, sliced
Images and recipes: Waitrose
1
Place the sliced jalapeno and vinegar in a bowl with the sugar and a pinch of salt; mix and set aside. Preheat the oven to 220°C, gas mark 7. Toss the broccoli with the oil, season and spread out on a large baking tray. Place on the top shelf of the oven and put the chorizo on a tray on a lower shelf. Roast for 15 minutes, turning each tray around halfway. Take out of the oven, slice the chorizo and set aside.
2
Meanwhile, mix the yogurt, tabasco sauce and finely chopped coriander in a bowl. Pour the jalapeno pickling liquid into the yogurt (reserving the jalapeno slices), then mix and season.
3
Pile the rocket onto four plates with the avocado, broccoli and chorizo. Drizzle over the dressing, then scatter with the jalapeno slices and roughly chopped coriander leaves. Drizzle with extra olive oil, if liked.
4
For a vegetarian alternative, replace the chorizo with sun-dried tomatoes or chargrilled peppers.

CAESAR SALAD WITH ROASTED CAULIFLOWER Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 40 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 1 cauliflower 120ml olive oil 5 tbsp fresh white breadcrumbs 10 tbsp parmigiano reggiano, grated, plus extra shavings to garnish 2 garlic cloves, crushed ½ lemon, zest, plus 1 tbsp juice 1 tbsp finely chopped flat leaf parsley 2 anchovy fillets, roughly chopped ½ tsp Worcestershire sauce 1 free range egg yolk 1 romaine lettuce, roughly chopped
1
Preheat the oven to 220˚C, gas mark 7. Cut the cauliflower into 2cm-thick slices; remove any tough core. Toss with 2 tbsp oil, season, and arrange on a baking tray (don’t worry if the florets break up). Roast for 30 minutes, turning halfway. Meanwhile, mix the breadcrumbs, 5 tbsp grated cheese, 1 crushed garlic clove, the lemon zest, parsley and 1 tbsp oil; season. Sprinkle over the cauliflower; roast for 10 minutes more.
2
For the dressing, put the anchovies, Worcestershire sauce, egg yolk, 1 tbsp lemon juice and the remaining crushed garlic clove in a tall glass or jug. Add the remaining 75ml oil and 1 tbsp warm water; using a hand-held upright blender, whizz to an emulsified sauce. Stir in the remaining 5 tbsp grated cheese and plenty of ground black pepper.
3
Toss the lettuce with ½ the dressing (keep the rest in an airtight container for up to 24 hours); arrange on a platter. Top with the cauliflower and extra cheese. URBAN FOX JUNE 2019 27

PASSION FRUIT & LIME CREAM POTS Makes: 6 Ingredients: 1 lime 6 large passion fruit 100g golden caster sugar 600ml tub double cream Method: Finely grate the lime zest onto a damp sheet of kitchen paper, wrap up loosely and chill. Scoop the flesh from 5 passion fruit into a sieve set over a bowl. Use a wooden spoon to push the pulp through the sieve and extract the juice; discard the seeds. Squeeze the lime into the passion fruit juice; mix together.
Put the sugar, 300ml cream and a pinch of salt in a pan. Heat gently until the sugar has dissolved, then bring to the boil and simmer for 3 minutes. Take off the heat and pour into the passion fruit and lime juice, stirring to combine. Set aside to cool for 20 minutes. Using electric beaters, whip the remaining 300ml cream to soft peaks in a large mixing bowl. Fold in the passion fruit and lime cream until combined, then stir through the zest. Spoon or pour into ramekins or glasses and chill for at least 6 hours, but ideally overnight. Serve with the pulp of the remaining passion fruit spooned over the top.
GOOSEBERRY CRUNCH FOOLS Makes: 6 Ingredients: 300g gooseberries, topped and tailed 7 tbsp granulated sugar 3 tbsp dark brown sugar Pinch ground ginger 50g jumbo porridge oats 300g Greek yogurt 300ml tub double cream 1 tsp vanilla bean paste Method: Put the gooseberries in a pan with 4 tbsp granulated sugar and 1 tbsp water. Heat, stirring, until the berries have collapsed (about 6-8 minutes). Crush with the back of a fork and set aside to cool. Meanwhile, put the remaining 3 tbsp granulated sugar in a small frying pan with the brown sugar, ginger and a pinch of sea salt. Set over a low heat and melt, swirling the pan a little to help it along. When almost all the sugar has completely melted (it may take a while so be patient and don’t stir it), add the oats; stir them through the caramel with a fork. Tip onto a sheet of parchment. Whip the yogurt, cream and vanilla to soft peaks with a balloon whisk. Ripple through the cool gooseberries, then spoon into glasses or ramekins. Top with clusters of the caramelised oats just before serving. URBAN FOX JUNE 2019 29

SUMMER
MAKEOVER Step outside your comfort zone this summer and try one or more of our 30-day challenges designed to makeover your mind, body and soul.
Here’s some ideas to get you started…
1
Write a journal with a difference, record only positive events and thoughts.
2 3 4 5
Dare to bare and go without makeup…no cheating!
Ditch the meat and become a vegetarian or vegan.
6
Take up a crazy but fun hobby – scuba diving, hang-gliding, mountain climbing.
7
8 9
Learn a new instrument – banjo, castanets - how hard can it be? Apply for jobs you want, even if you don’t have all the skills and experience.
Learn a foreign language, very useful if you’re planning your own Brexit. Go it alone, whether it’s business networking, a party or holiday. Volunteer your time, from local projects to a turtle conservation centre in Costa Rica.
10
Feel the fear and do it anyway – pick up a spider, abseil, ask your boss for a pay rise.
11
Unleash your inner child. Collect shells, paddle in the sea, eat A LOT of ice cream.
12
Be totally honest with yourself and others - basically no lying - it’s harder than you think.
13
Expand your culinary repertoire and try a new recipe each day.
14
Switch off the TV, pick up a book and read a chapter a night.
18
Stop complaining. From the weather to your work colleagues, negativity is draining.
19
Exercise for 30 mins a day. Walk, swim, or dance like there’s nobody watching.
20
Ditch your social media sites and telephone your friends instead.
21
Undertake an act of kindness each day. Open the door, run an errand, every little helps.
15
22 23
16
24
17
25
Live on a strict budget (to prove that you can) take lunch to work, don’t buy new clothes etc. Sell everything you don’t need or wear and use the money for a treat or charitable donation. Learn something new every day - a word, famous quote or capital city.
Make like a tourist and rediscover your own city. Don’t fall victim of your busy life. Reclaim an hour for yourself every day. Listen intently when people talk, rather than thinking what you’re going to say next. Write down something you have loved about each day.

GREAT
Dame With her trophy cabinet fit to bursting from a life of acclaimed turns on stage and screen, Helen Mirren’s latest project sees her tread familiar territory in typically headstrong fashion.
LIFE & WORK
When it comes to casting royal women, there are few names higher on a director’s list than Dame Helen Mirren. Having already claimed an Academy Award for her portrayal of the current monarch in The Queen and become the first woman to portray both regal Elizabeths via the acclaimed mini-series Elizabeth I, there’s something about Mirren that undoubtedly conveys a palpable sense of elegance and majesty on-screen. And if her earlier work was a testament to her being one of the UK’s most acclaimed acting exports, her latest queenly project serves to reconnect Mirren with her foreign roots. Taking the eponymous lead in the HBO series Catherine the Great, the Chiswick-born star traces a line between the legendary Russian ruler and her own birthname, Mironov – a family in which her father was a Tsarist army officer and ambassador, and who even garnered a mention in Tolstoy’s War and Peace. “It's more that my Russian ancestry has a connection to acting,” the 73-year-old explains. “When I researched my family history, I discovered that a Russian ancestor of mine had created one of the first theatres in 17th century Russia! Also, I have discovered Mironov is also the name of one of the greatest Russian actors, Yevgeny Mironov, although unfortunately we are not related. But I think there might be something about my Russian heritage that fated me to become an actress.” Familial connections aside, however, there’s no doubt that the role of Catherine proved irresistible for an actress who has come to be a trailblazer and icon among her peers. “She was a woman from history who grabbed and then wielded great power,” Mirren nods. “She rewrote the rules of governance by a woman and succeeded to the extent of having the word Great attached to her name. I try encouraging younger generations to retain their idealism and keep fighting to make the world a better place. You can't give in to cynicism.
I'm a rebel, and so I have no fear in speaking my mind and asserting my point of view. Women need to keep speaking out until the politicians and of course the powerbrokers in Hollywood give women greater quality and our fair share.”
"the spirit of change has been bubbling under the surface for many generations" Such an outlook is a common, if no less important, among the older generation of Hollywood actresses like Mirren who have seen the industry landscape be changed nearly beyond recognition over the last couple of years. “In the past women had almost no voice,” she nods. “But the spirit of change has been bubbling under the surface for many generations, and now we're in the middle of a volcanic eruption where women are able to speak out about these issues and there's no turning back. I've spent most of life dealing with sexism and fighting against it. I'm very glad that we're now seeing extraordinary changes taken place and women are taking up positions of power in all walks of life. My belief is that the movie business is a reflection of the real world, at least with regard to the status of women. Once we see women gain more power and equality in everyday life then we're going to see women play a much more substantial role in the arts in general. Then we'll see more films and TV series that are much more representative of women's lives and importance in society.” Of course, recent and upcoming projects such as the Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon-driven Big Little Lies or the Margot Robbieproduced Birds of Prey have shown that women in the arts can hope to wrest control of their creative futures. In this, too, did Mirren set a precedent, whether intentionally – as with the case of Catherine the Great – or not.
“The funny thing is that everything started with Prime Suspect,” she reveals. “I always arrived early because I wanted to be the first to introduce myself and get rid of any nervousness or awkwardness between me and the other actors, especially any new cast members. Then one day the producer, Andy Harris, looked at me and remarked how everyone on the set treated me like a Queen, and how I even looked like one. So, the idea of filming The Queen was born in his mind!” Yet even a bona fide acting legend like Mirren, who is one of a handful of thespians to have claimed the coveted Triple Crown of Oscar, Tony, and Emmy awards, had her reservations. “You set yourself up to fall flat on your face!” she laughs. “I’ve always been very wary of saying ‘I’d like to do this’, because it is a recipe for disaster; it’s better to allow things to come randomly and brilliantly. But then I was committed, I couldn’t wriggle out of it...and here we are!” With Mirren making her triumphant return to the small screen, there’s an overwhelming sense that the industry has never been more fertile for female stars, both established and upcoming, to make their mark. For women like Mirren, such a possibility has been the result of hard work and dedication – and she’s keen to see others take up the torch for what could hopefully well be the final stretch. “My parents had taught me that it was important to make my own way in the world and never depend on a man for money,” she explains. “Economic independence was a value that was ingrained in me from the beginning. But it was hard at first when I was beginning my career in a film industry that was totally dominated by men. It took me time to learn how to defend myself in that world and I figured out that you have to become more aggressive if you want to make your way and not get pushed around. Women need to be able to speak up for themselves.” URBAN FOX JUNE 2019 35

SCHOOL'S
OUT “School may soon be ‘out for summer’, but that doesn’t mean you want your children to forget everything they’ve learnt before they go back in September,” says Margaret Kewell, Headmistress at Grace Dieu Manor School. Here she gives her advice on how to keep little minds active over the summer holidays:
Counting the days…
Six weeks is a long time in the lifespan of little minds – so it’s certainly worth keeping their learning and development journey going. That way, when they arrive at school in September, either for their first days in Reception, or having transitioned from Year 1 to Year 2, they’re ready to enjoy learning new things! Six weeks of summer holidays can also be a long time for parents too – so keeping their minds active will hopefully keep them well entertained.
Get outside!
Children love learning both outdoors and about the outdoors. Forest school activities are incredibly popular with children and they often don’t realise just how much they are learning about the world around them, along with developing key skills. So, why not take the lead with some of your own family outdoor learning sessions? There’s a whole host of brilliant activities on the Woodland
Trust website which you can use or adapt according to the interests of your children. Nature detective scavenger hunts could see the children searching and learning simultaneously, whilst building mini dens for their toys will fire their imagination and help their dexterity and construction skills. Or, encourage them to get creative – leaf or bark rubbing is always fun, whilst painting stones (and leaving them to be discovered by others) can take on a life of its own.
Take up a reading challenge
Encouraging your children to be bookworms is a sure-fire way of keeping them both entertained and ‘on track’ to reach their academic potential. Still, there are so many fun distractions in the holidays that ring-fencing time for reading can understandably, be a challenge particularly when the sun is shining and outdoor play beckons! Libraries across the country have been running a Summer Reading
Challenge (for an impressive 20 years) which encourages children aged 4 to 11 to read six library books during the summer holiday. For some ideas on what to read, parents who have children in the EYFS could enjoy reading together, ‘Stefano the Squid: Hero of the Deep’ by Wendy Meddour and ‘Some Dogs Do’ by Jez Alborough. Children in Year 1 might like ‘All the Year Round’ by John Yeoman and Quentin Blake, while those in Year 2 who are reading for themselves may enjoy ‘Whatever Next’, by Jill Murphy. And of course, any Roald Dahl book is a wonderful way to wile away a few shared hours! Finally, for those requiring childcare over the summer, camps and courses are a great way for your children to have fun while developing self-confidence and key skills such as leadership and team-building. From science and technology, to sports and the Arts, there is something to suit every child’s interests.

HOME Cost
Your choice of holiday home and the way you pay for it will depend on whether you want to keep it for personal use or have it as a holiday let. Whether you opt for a holiday or buy-to-let mortgage, or refinance your main property to raise the purchase price, remember to consider stamp duty, as since 2016 buyto-let and second homes attract an additional 3% on each band. Do your homework - check for flood risk or land slip and get two or three home insurance quotes. You’ll also need to factor in unavoidable running costs such as council tax, utilities and a property manager if want them to manage the property during your absence. Currency, exchange rates, additional professional and legal costs, should be taken into account when buying outside of the UK.
Size
Consider the type of holiday home that you want. If it’s just for personal use, a fisherman’s
Do you dream of owning a slice of the seaside, or a cottage in the Cotswolds? If you’re thinking of joining the holiday house club, here’s some points to consider.
cottage by the sea might hit the spot. But if you’re seeking an income, cottages are small and face a lot of competition in the rental market. Unless it really stands out from the crowd, you'd be better off upsizing with a larger property. Even if you don’t make use of the space yourself, you’ll be able to capitalise on the space for rental gain. And while you might be willing to rough it and escape from it all, the minimum requirement of the average holiday maker is likely to include, fast internet connection, good heating, parking, outdoor space and access to local amenities within a short walk or driving distance. USPs such as a pool, mooring and direct access to the beach, will add to the rental value.
Location
The UK continues to be a holiday home hotspot for us Brits. Research areas which tick your boxes and represent a good investment. If St. Ives in Cornwall is on your list, cross it off, as there’s a ban on second homes to protect local businesses from off-season financial droughts.
Once you have a shortlist, consider transport links and access. Can you get there for an impromptu visit? Is there a train station or airport nearby? Larger distances may negatively impact your holiday home insurance with some providers, and a long journey may limit the number of times you can enjoy your new bolthole. Whether you intend to use the property yourself or as a let, think about access to shops, restaurants, bars, beaches tourist attractions and medical facilities for the occasional holiday mishaps.
Research areas which tick your boxes and represent a good investment. Now all you have to do is prepare yourself for the sudden influx of messages from long lost friends and family when news of your holiday home breaks.

OUTSIDE Lift your outdoor entertaining game with the latest garden furniture trends. WOOD
If you’re a diehard wood fan, teak is a great timber for durability. Teak ages beautifully, looks amazing in a natural setting and is ideal for dining or unwinding all year round. Cover when not in use, to keep it looking better for longer.
WICKER
When buying garden furniture, it’s always a good idea to invest in allweather-resistant materials. A manmade wicker will resist the elements and make for effortless maintenance. Designs are usually sleek and sophisticated, offering a comfortable dining or lounging experience.
BRIGHT
Stand out from the crowd and add the fun factor with a bold colour combo. Think Mexico, Cuba or the Tropics. Sets like this that make use of low-level design and lightweight materials, are also ideal for balconies, decking and other small spaces.
CORNER
Modern, contemporary and chic, a corner sofa will make outdoor entertaining both easy and stylish. Choose one with sumptuous cushions for maximum comfort and look for a set that includes a coffee table that can be attached to the end or left separate for flexible entertaining.
BISTRO
Having a small garden doesn’t mean you can’t still make a big impact. There’s a whole host of compact but cool dining sets to choose from, in a range of seasonal colours. A foldable option will also save space until the next time you're enjoying a drink or something to eat outdoors. URBAN FOX JUNE 2019 55

You Then, Me Now
by Nick Alexander Becky’s father is not just absent: he’s a mystery, a gaping hole in her past. He died before she was born and for her mother, Laura, the subject is strictly off-limits. But when Laura books an unexpected trip to the beautiful island of Santorini, Becky decides to join her, determined to get closer to her mother—and to the truth. Laura has been here before but memories of that first trip are tinged with pain and heartbreak. Now, with the truth emerging, can mother and daughter lay the ghosts of their past to rest and find the happiness they’ve both been looking for?
The Overdue Life of Amy Byler
by Kelly Harms Overworked and underappreciated, single mum Amy Byler needs a break. So, when the guilt-ridden husband who abandoned her shows up and offers to take care of their kids for the summer, she accepts his offer and escapes rural Pennsylvania for New York City. Usually grounded and mild mannered, Amy finally lets her hair down. She discovers a life filled with culture, sophistication, and - with a little encouragement from her friends - a few blind dates. As the summer comes to an end, Amy must make an impossible decision: stay, or return to the life she left behind.
A Stranger City
by Linda Grant When a dead body is found in the Thames, caught in the chains of HMS Belfast, it begins a search for a missing woman and confirms a sense that in London a person can become invisible once outside their community, assuming they even have a community. The wonderful Linda Grant weaves a tale around ideas of home; how London can be a place of exile or expulsion, how home can be a physical place or an idea. How all our lives intersect and how coincidence or the randomness of birth place can decide how and with whom we live.
Nine Perfect Strangers
by Liane Moriarty One house. Nine strangers. Ten days that will change everything... Nine stressed city dwellers are keen to drop their literal and mental baggage and absorb the meditative ambience of Tranquillum House, while enjoying their hot stone massages. Miles from anywhere, without cars or phones, they have no way to reach the outside world. Just time to think about themselves and get to know each other. Watching over them is the resort's director, a woman on a mission. But quite a different one to any of the guests would’ve imagined. As behind the retreat's glamorous façade lies a dark agenda.
The Beekeeper of Aleppo

When all they care for is destroyed by war, they are forced to escape. PEOPLE & PLACES
Family
FEST From Gloworm to Wychwood, Kirsty France has the low down on the best family-friendly festivals for summer. Rock on. Did you love going to music festivals before you had children? You might think the arrival of your small people has made them a thing of the past. Unless you’ve got the kind of children who are unfazed by hanging out at the Pyramid stage, of course. The good news is that UK festival organisers are increasingly catering to a family audience. There’s everything from mainstream festivals, think Camp Bestival at Lulworth Castle and The Big Feastival in the Cotswolds, with entertainment for all ages; to those that put children at their heart. Here are my tips for some good ones to try along with a few hints to help you have a great time when you get there.
Kid-centric festivals
If you want a festival that puts children first, head to Gloworm. It’s just up the road in Nottinghamshire and their whole programme is designed for under 13s. This year’s entertainment includes Paw Patrol, Fearne and Rory and the Swashbuckle pirates from CBeebies. If that sounds like your idea of hell, don’t worry, there’s some more grown up tribute bands for you to escape to in the evening whilst your toddler falls asleep in the pushchair. Deer Shed in North Yorkshire is billed as the ultimate family festival and includes music, a science tent, theatre and sports arena. Their programme will entertain everyone in the family and there’s even a special under-fives programme. If you like the sound of this one, move fast because tickets were selling quickly the last time I checked.
Family entertainment
If you’d like to see some bands that you’ve actually heard of while still keeping the kids amused, there’s loads of choice. Wychwood Family Festival in Cheltenham regularly appears on best family festival lists and is great if you’re up for a dose of nostalgia as T’Pau and Toyah are on the bill for 2019. They also host arts and theatre workshops. A highlight for this year is the chance to make models with
Aardman animations – your children could come home with their very own Gromit or Shaun the Sheep. You could also try Nozstock: The Hidden Valley in Herefordshire which features Rudimental and Soul II Soul this year. There’s also a kids’ area with a whole host of arts and crafts activities to give the children some down time.
Camping with children
Sometimes the scariest thing about going to a festival with kids is the part where you go camping. Most family festivals will let you book extra space for a larger tent so you can have separate sleeping areas. It might not stop your children waking you at 6am but at least you won’t have to deal with them fidgeting all night. When it comes to food, keep it simple. Invest in a portable stove and a camping kettle. It might seem extravagant but it’s worth it as boiling water in a saucepan takes forever and I’m not fully awake until I’ve had tea. At our last festival we made pancake mix and froze it. It defrosted overnight and was perfect for breakfast. There really is a world of choice out there, so pack up your tent, pull on those wellies and find a festival that works for you. URBAN FOX JUNE 2019 65

Louise Flynn
“I’m thrilled that for the last 3 years we’ve been regional finalists in the L’Oréal Colour Trophy Awards”, says salon owner Louise Flynn. I was born and brought up in Leicester. I attended Linden Primary School and later Judge Meadow Community College. Growing up I always had an interest in hairdressing, taking Saturday jobs and doing work experience in hair salons. When I came to leave school, I was delighted to be offered an apprenticeship at a large salon, and it was here that I completed all my initial training. My parents were both successful business owners, so it’s perhaps unsurprising that after a few years working in a salon and learning about its operations, I decided to start my own hairdressing business. I tested the market initially by running a mobile service. It wasn’t long before word spread, and I found myself fully booked on a regular basis. It was then I decided to make the investment and open my first salon. I set up on Loseby Lane in the city centre and remained there for 5 years. Looking to expand and move out of the city centre, I found a bigger salon in Oadby. La Femme Belle – meaning female beautiful – was launched offering hair services and beauty
treatments too. 12 years later I was on the move again, but this time not so far – just 2 doors up in fact. The larger premises enabled me to open up the beauty side of the business further, creating La Femme Belle Spa alongside Louise Flynn Hair. From small beginnings, I now have a team of 11 stylists and therapists, and we’re able to offer a wide range of hair and beauty services under one roof, featuring leading brands such as Decléor, Crystal Clear, L’oréal and Redken. In recent years we’ve also expanded our beauty menu to offer semi-permanent makeup and aesthetic beauty treatments too.
It wasn't long before word spread, and I found myself fully booked One of my big passions (apart from my family, dogs and renovating an old cottage I recently bought – I know it’s a long list), is colour and I’m thrilled that for the last 3 years we’ve been regional finalists in the L’Oréal Colour Trophy Awards. A great achievement and fabulous fun.

In September this year my daughter Scarlett will be joining us. Like me, she has a massive interest in all things, hair and beauty. To celebrate her joining the family business, I recently launched our Scarlett Grace salon in Billesdon. It’s a smaller salon than La Femme Belle, but we have 4 amazing hairdressers and in addition to hair services we’re offering nail, eyelash and brow treatments too. New clients to Scarlett Grace can also take advantage of our 10% opening offer. For more details visit www.lafemmebelle.co.uk or www.scarlettgracehair.co.uk
