STYLE

Hair to wear, straight from the autumn/ winter catwalk.

PIXIE

SIDE-SWEEP

The pixie, aka the coolgirl crop, is where it’s at this fall. Gamine and gorgeous, it’s a style that takes guts but the payoff is totally worth it. Perfect whatever your hair colour, keep it interesting with plenty of layers and a wispy fringe.

Versatile and contemporary the side-sweep is a low maintenance look for AW18. Simply tip your head upside down and apply lots of hairspray, before brushing your hair over one ear. Voilà. Fun, feminine and you create a fab faux fringe in the process.

From Paris to New York, catwalks embraced the natural hair trend, with models wearing their locks minimally styled with just a spritz of spray and texturiser. So step away from the straighteners and rock those kooky kinks. Curly girls this is your year!

NATURAL

REDHEAD VOLUMINOUS

Au Jour Le Jo ur

This season, red hair was everywhere. From strawberry blond and fiery orange to tumbling waves and choppy bobs, red hair can work in so many ways. If you’re a natural redhead, prepare to get noticed.

The alternative to the hyper-slicked back hair of summer, there’s no such thing as too much when it comes to this season’s voluminous hair. From bigger is better beehives to perfectly polished poufs, this trend is ideal for those who want to embrace an old school style.

FALL INTO

When it comes to exercise, New Year isn’t the only opportunity to hit the reset on your healthy routine. Fall is the perfect time to recommit to fitness goals or set new ones, says Rebecca Watts from TheStudios40. Summer has a habit of throwing us out of our usual healthy routines. With holidays, BBQs and Pimms O’clock, it’s easy to fall off the wagon. But now autumn’s here, it’s time to get refocused. For me, fall is the best time of year to get motivated and kick start a new fitness regime. Here’s why…

1

We can take advantage of those lingering effects of summer – lighter evenings and warmer temperatures – needed to help boost our motivation.

2

During the summer we top up our stores of mood boosting vitamin D, ensuring that at this time of year, we have plenty in the tank to keep us focussed and eager.

3

The kids are back at school, your summer social life has dwindled and there’s nothing to distract you. Now’s the perfect time to settle back into, or create new routines.

Ready to fall in fitness? Here’s some tips to get you started…

Set some goals

Studies show there is a strong link between motivation and reward. If we achieve we get reward and if we are rewarded we stay motivated to continue. But we cannot achieve and be rewarded without first having goals. Make sure that the goals you set are achievable and measurable. Try and include some health goals too as these have a higher success rate than weight loss goals alone.

Make a plan

A goal without a plan is just a wish. Each goal needs behaviours to achieve it. Decide on the behaviours needed to achieve your goals and work out how you will incorporate those behaviours into your life - biking to work, going to the gym after the school run etc. Do try to be realistic. You’re better to be consistent with once a week rather than inconsistent with 3 times a week.

Buddy up

It’s hard to get on track and stay motivated as we head into the colder months. However, if you find an exercise buddy you’ll find it much easier. You can motivate and support each other

and it often makes it more fun too. Exercising with a friend is also a great way to cut costs. Hire a personal trainer and split the fee between you.

Join a club

Exercise doesn’t have to mean going to the gym. Many women are put off by the gym environment but there are other options out there. You can join a sports club or group - hockey, football, cycling, hiking, Nordic walking. You can also find classes at your local village or town hall - boot camps, kettlebells, yoga, pilates. You should definitely find something to suit your personal preferences.

Get outside

As we head towards winter there are less opportunities to keep active outdoors, so make the most of it while you can. There are plenty of free activities you can do outside hiking, cycling, going for a jog; many of which can be family activities too. As well as the benefits of exercise, you’ll also get the benefits of being in the great outdoors. So don’t wait until the New Year. Create those fitness habits now, and they’ll see you through winter for a fitter, healthier and slimmer 2019. URBAN FOX OCTOBER 2018 21

Refresh

& REVIVE Has your get-up-and-go, got up and gone? Good news! A few simple lifestyle tweaks might be all that it takes to revive you for the months ahead.

Here are 10 easy ways to re-energise your day…

1

For the perfect power breakfast, switch your croissant and crunchy nut, for porridge made with jumbo oats and almond milk. This highfibre, low GI combo will kick-start your metabolism, keep you fuller longer and balance your bloodsugar levels.

2

3

Drink water every hour. The sun may have gone but even minor dehydration can make you feel sluggish. By the time you feel thirsty, your body is already partially dehydrated, so to avoid headaches, tiredness and grumpiness, simply raise your glass. Bottoms up! Studies have shown that people who work with a green plant in their line of vision, concentrate more and work faster. Plants absorb CO² and other environmental pollutants that can trigger fatigue, leaving you feeling more positive and energised.

4

If your usual lunch is a whitebread sandwich and crisps, you're

probably flagging by 3pm. Instead opt for a prawn stir-fry or a chicken and avocado salad which will curb those hunger pangs through the afternoon, plus count towards your 5 a day.

5

Taking a 10-minute brisk walk at lunchtime (yes even at this time of year) will make you feel more energetic than devouring a chocolate bar. Pumping oxygen around your body helps you feel more alert and will enable you to refocus on your goals for the rest of the day.

6

7

Although small amounts of caffeine act as a stimulant, if you overindulge you will feel drained and exhausted. Switch to decaf after lunch or try Ginseng tea which helps the body heal itself, giving you more energy to deal with the challenges of the day.

If you do get the mid-afternoon munchies, choose an energy boosting snack that includes both protein and carbohydrate. This will satisfy your immediate hunger

but also release energy slowly. Try a few almonds with an apple, or peanut butter on oatcakes.

8

9

If you find it difficult to switch off at home, it might be because your head is still in the office. Before you leave work spend a few minutes focussing on what you have achieved, and listing tasks for the next day. You'll feel both satisfied and energised. We all need to relax but flopping down in front of the TV doesn't count. It does nothing for you physically and over-stimulates the brain. It may be too cold outside but you can listen to music, read a good book, or let go of the stresses of the day with some yoga.

10

It's the quality of your sleep, not just the quantity that’s important so invest in a night-time routine. Soak in a warm bath, read for 15 minutes and sip a milky drink. The protein alpha-lactalbumin in milk improves your sleep, leaving you more alert the next day. URBAN FOX OCTOBER 2018 23

Embrace autumn with these easy yet impressive one pot supper dishes from Waitrose.

TAMARIND BEEF & MUSHROOM CASSEROLE Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 2 hours Serves: 4

400ml beef stock, hot 250g chestnut mushrooms, halved Coriander leaves and cooked rice

Ingredients: 2 tbsp sunflower oil 400g diced braising steak 550g casserole vegetables 4 cloves garlic, thinly sliced 2 red chillies, halved lengthways 1 tbsp grated fresh ginger 100g jar Tamarind Paste 1 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp light brown muscovado sugar

1

Preheat the oven to 200°C, gas mark 6. Heat the oil in a large flame and ovenproof casserole dish. Cook the steak for 5 minutes until nicely browned then, with a slotted spoon, transfer to a plate. Add the vegetables to the hot pan and cook for 5 minutes then add the garlic, chilli and ginger, and cook for a further 1 minute.

2

Return the meat to the pan with any resting juices and stir in the tamarind paste, soy sauce, sugar and stock. Bring to a simmer, cover then transfer to the oven and cook for 1½ hours.

3

Stir in the mushrooms and return to the oven for a further 20 minutes until the beef and vegetables are very tender. Serve with the rice and a sprinkling of coriander leaves.

Cook’s tip: For a lightly spiced flavour, add a teaspoon of Chinese five spice to the stock.

BUTTERNUT & BLUE CHEESE BAKED RISOTTO Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 1 hour 10 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 1 butternut, peeled, deseeded and chopped into 2cm chunks 1 tbsp olive oil 25g butter 1 onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 300g risotto rice 20g pack fresh sage, leaves roughly chopped 200ml dry white wine 1 litre vegetable stock, hot 150g Gorgonzola, diced

1

Preheat the oven to 180°C, gas mark 4. Place the butternut in a 2.5-litre ovenproof dish, drizzle with oil and roast for 15 minutes.

2

Meanwhile, melt the butter in a saucepan and cook the onion and garlic for 5 minutes until softened. Stir in the rice and sage and cook for 30 seconds. Add the wine, bring to a simmer and cook for 2 minutes.

3

Add the rice mixture to the ovenproof dish and pour over the hot stock. Bake uncovered for 40-45 minutes until the rice is tender and the stock absorbed. Scatter over the cheese and divide between 4 bowls and finish with a good grinding of black pepper.

Cook’s tip: Shallow-fry whole sage leaves in olive oil until crisp. Scatter on the risotto just before serving.. Images and recipes: Waitrose

WINING & DINING

COTTAGE PIE WITH CAULIFLOWER CHEESE TOPPING Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 1 hour Serves: 4 - 6 Ingredients: 1 onion, roughly chopped 1 large carrot, roughly chopped 2 tsp rosemary leaves 2 tbsp olive oil 400g mince beef 150g red split lentils 2 tbsp tomato purée 1 Oxo Rich Beef with Onion & Rosemary Stock Pot 600ml boiling water 500g Maris Piper potatoes, peeled and cut into large chunks 1 medium cauliflower, cut into florets 100ml crème fraîche 100g mature Cheddar cheese, grated

1

Preheat the oven to 200°C, gas mark 6. Place the onion, carrot and rosemary in a food processor and pulse until finely chopped. Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan and add the mixture and gently cook for 6 minutes, until softened but not coloured.

2

Add the mince beef and mix with the vegetables, cooking for 2 minutes until browned and breaking up with a wooden spoon. Add the red lentils and tomato purée and cook for 1 minute. Mix together the stockpot and water and stir into the pan. Cook gently for 20 minutes without a lid, until the lentils are tender.

3

Meanwhile, place the potatoes in a large saucepan and cover with water. Bring to the boil and cook for 10 minutes then add the cauliflower and cook for a further 7 minutes until the potatoes and cauliflower are very soft when pierced with a knife. Drain well and return to the pan with the crème fraîche, cheese and a pinch of salt and mash together until you have a creamy yet coarse mash.

4

Spoon the beef and lentil mix into a 35x25cm ovenproof dish then spoon the mash on top leaving it quite rough for a crispy crust. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden, crusty and bubbling.

Cook’s tip: Try using creamy cannellini beans or haricot beans to make the mash.

LIFE & WORK

Fright

NIGHTS

Here we are again on that seasonal train to 'Autumn Central'. With summer back down the line and winter the next stop we can only surrender to the joys of the new season. And who doesn’t love Halloween and Bonfire Night, asks veteran mum Sarah Mettrick? Now if you’re going to an adult party Am I being sarcastic? Well maybe, but after having children I decided to embrace the celebrations and put some effort in. On Halloween I adorn the house with all things revolting and make disgusting looking food items. On reflection I manage to do the latter most days. And I always make sure I have enough goodies in the house after an unfortunate episode between my Dad and two pint- sized zombies. At his house a couple of years ago he was asked if he wanted a trick or a treat, he quickly chose the treat option in fear that tricks may involve his brand new sports car. Having nothing exciting left in the house he panicked but eventually found an out of date mini box of cereal. Feeling rather pleased with himself he went on to enjoy a peaceful evening, however the following morning it took him ages to pick all the Rice Krispies out if his car grille.

and have small children don't make the same mistake we did, make sure you warn them of your proposed attire prior to getting ready. We temporarily forgot how hideous we looked and two blood sodden Vampires descended upon them for a goodbye kiss. My youngest nearly went into cardiac arrest. She had nightmares for weeks involving canine teeth.

"I decided to embrace the celebrations and put some effort in." To celebrate bonfire night last year we thought we’d go all out for a party at home. To light the bonfire on the grass was a no go as my husband is obsessed with the lawn. This year’s heatwave destroyed it, I had to calm him with deep breathing techniques and a cold beer. Luckily he is also a pyromaniac so a solution was found and he built the fire in an old battered

wheelbarrow. We didn't have a Guy Fawkes but after an unpleasant incident that day involving a rude hairy man and his Ford Orion I was tempted to create an effigy of my own. So anyway it was all going swimmingly, we had apple bobbing, sparklers, pulled pork baguettes, we were the perfect hosts. And then the fireworks began. You can imagine the excitement surging through my husband’s veins. He didn't exactly choreograph his display, there were long gaps between pathetic poofs of coloured smoke. Our 20 or so guests looked thoroughly underwhelmed. They soon woke up when fireworks started to dart horizontally and directly at them. I could only watch in horror as my friends fireman-lifted their children and evacuated the danger zone. I found them crouched and trembling behind my car doing a head count. My husband eventually appeared through a screen of smoke resembling Doc Brown from Back to the Future. He coughed and said “We’ve still got the Catherine Wheel!” URBAN FOX OCTOBER 2018 31

CHASTAIN'S

CRUSADE In recent times Hollywood has been forced to ditch its antiquated, male-dominated image for deserved diversity and equality across the board: a move that has only justified the beliefs of stars like Jessica Chastain, long-time figurehead for women, both on and off the silver screen.

LIFE & WORK

Jessica Chastain’s appearances in box-office smash hits such as Interstellar, The Martian, and last year’s Molly’s Game, have only reinforced her status as one of the world’s most compelling actresses. But for every strong performance on screen, there is an equally forceful persona off it. The modern era of Hollywood – buoyed by the #MeToo and #TimesUp campaigns – is now more than ever benefitting from Chastain’s unabashed desire to speak up on the social issues that have too often plagued the movie industry behind the scenes, from pay inequality across genders, to promoting more female lead roles and getting more of her fellow women behind the camera and in the producer’s chair. "I want to do as much as I can to create a different kind of awareness of women," the 41-year-old says enthusiastically. "Women are not celebrated for their achievements or who they are but for their appearance. Our society continues to value women according to their perceived level of sexual attraction and that has to change. I have a strong sense of social consciousness and justice and I want to be part of the movement that brings about real change not just in my industry but in society as a whole. I really think this is an important moment for women." Chastain is not alone in her crusade. Fellow A-listers have been taking charge of their own destinies in recent times, such as Reese Witherspoon, who oversaw the production of the immensely successful, female-driven HBO drama Big Little Lies. Chastain, meanwhile, is in the midst of

getting international spy thriller 355 developed – a tantalising prospect for any cinema-goer wanting to see the fearsome foursome of Chastain, Penelope Cruz, Lupita Nyong’o and Marion Cotillard together on-screen. “These are the types of films that we need to make,” says Chastain of 355. “Women have to become a much bigger part of the picture and we have to develop more stories that reflect our strength and capabilities the way men are presented in our industry.

I want to be part of the movement that brings about real change. I created my own production company to improve female representation in every aspect of this sector. I also set myself a goal of trying to make at least one film a year with a female director. All women can give ourselves those kinds of goals. We need to use our power as consumers to help bring about change. We can decide how to spend our money, which films go to see, and which books to buy. We can all do our part.” It’s not just her own industry, either: “You still see a lot of comments and judgements being made about a female politician's choice of clothes and jewellery, whether she's wearing a pants suit or whether she wears a necklace,” she explains by way of example. “We don't make those kinds of judgements when it comes to men.” From historical biopics, to period dramas, modern military thrillers,

and even upcoming entries into the world of superhero cinema (Dark Phoenix) and horror (IT: Chapter 2): Chastain has never been one to submit to typecasting. This versatility, combined with her outspokenness on social issues, has only added to her reputation as a role model and trailblazer. Away from the spotlight, however, Chastain remains guarded when it comes to her life with fashion executive and Italian nobleman Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo “I like to lead a quiet life. I enjoy staying home, reading, indulging in my passion for cooking which comes from my mother,” she reveals. “I like cooking dishes that take all day to prepare where the aroma fills the house and it feels like an occasion. I have a cabin by a lake where I like spending a lot of time because it's very peaceful and I enjoy being outdoors.

I was an independent woman before and now I'm part of a union of two individuals. There's this tendency on the part of the media and in films to define woman in terms of the men who are in their lives. I think we have to stop making this kind of identification. I got married last year: I was an independent woman before and now I'm part of a union of two individuals. But we still have separate lives in terms of our work and I would not want my career, or my social and political views, seen as being connected or reflective of who my husband is.”

LIFE & WORK

ALL

CHANGE

Just because the year feels like it's wrapping up, doesn't mean you should put your career on hold. The changing season is a great time for a change in focus.

Here are 9 simple steps to boost your career this fall…

1

Update your CV. Even if you’re not looking to change jobs right now, it’s good to be prepared should a promotion or departmental move come up in your company. Limit your CV to just 2 pages (what employer has the time or inclination to read more), describing your previous roles, skills and career goals. Remember to remove all acronyms and jargon.

2 3

Research your industry. Whether it’s keeping up to date with new business developments and technology, or attending relevant training and conferences, staying on top of your industry is crucial if you want to climb the corporate ladder. Research yourself. Did you know that many employers will now check out your social network sites during the recruitment process? Ensure your LinkedIn profile is up to date and that your Facebook page doesn’t contain any content that you wouldn’t be comfortable with your new boss seeing.

4

Hone your communication skills. Being able to speak clearly and concisely is invaluable in business. Whether you’re talking to your director, colleagues or clients, projecting your ideas effectively will inspire confidence and allow them to put their trust in you.

5 6

Network, network, network. There are lots of generalist and industry specific groups you can join or simply invite a colleague or client out for coffee. Remember that building relationships can take time and effort, so even if you don’t make a connection straight away, it’s still one more person you can reach out to in the future.

Feel confident. If you’ve ever procrastinated over applying for a job, or passed on a promotion because you’re “not ready”, this could be a sign that you’re sabotaging your own career. It’s completely normal to be a bit nervous about change, but go on, feel the fear and do it anyway!

7

Take a break. Travel offers the opportunity for personal growth and development, and at this time of year potentially a bit of much needed sunshine too. From learning a new language, to expanding your network and improving your cultural awareness; travel will serve you well, and may even open a few unexpected doors once back in the corporate world.

8 9

Work somewhere else…just temporarily. Volunteering not only benefits the organisation you volunteer for, but also you too. It’s a fantastic way to expand your personal and professional networks, learn new and transferable skills, explore other careers, plus help your CV stand out against others in a recruitment scenario. Plot your course. How can you expect to reach your career goals if you don’t have a clear strategy in place? Take time out to make a plan of where you want to be in 3 or 5 years, and the steps you’ll need to take to get there. Think of it as a Sat Nav for your career until you reach your destination. PALETTE

Green is the colour of choice for this look. Not the bright green of summer leaf prints, but deeper forest tones. Calke Green is one of Farrow & Ball’s key colours for 2018. Described as having ‘deep sage notes’ and a ‘masculine feel’, these darker shades work well with bright white woodwork.

Furniture should be fresh not fusty. Blend more traditional styled sofas and chairs with contemporary lighting, rustic woods and natural accessories, for a forest fusion feel. Opt for wooden flooring and soften with a selection of tactile throw rugs.

PATTERN

TEXTURE

Using texture in your design will bring the room together. The easiest and often least expensive way to add texture is through smaller items such as cushions and throws. By layering a combination of fabrics together - wool, silk, velvet, linen and embroidered - you can create a big impact.

This is a bold trend, where more is definitely more. Make a statement with an eye catching pattern – leaves, florals, birds - and combine with a contrasting design in a complementary colourway. Break up heavy patterns with smaller prints and plain neutrals to avoid visual overload.

ACCESSORIES

Bring the forest alive with a selection of indoor plants. From ferns and fatshederas, to zamioculcas and zebrinas, you really can’t have too many. Plant in pots made of natural materials – terracotta, clay – and cluster together for maximum effect.

HOMES & GARDENS

Outside IN

The humble houseplant is fast becoming the must-have home accessory. And the more the merrier. But before you head to your local garden centre, check out our tops tips on how to choose and care for your indoor plants.

Lighting

Most houseplants require bright filtered light. Light levels decrease as plants are placed further away from the window. As light levels drop in the winter some plants may benefit from being moved closer to a window. However remember to move them back again come summer, when direct sunlight can scorch their leaves.

Temperature

During spring and summer room temperatures within homes are ideal for most plants. Problems can arise however in the colder months when temperatures fluctuate due to central heating being switched on/off, or cold drafts. Although most plants will survive, it’s worth checking if the plant you like reacts well to colder temperatures before you buy it.

Health

When investing in houseplants, always check to see if the plant is healthy. Look for strong healthy leaves, a firm stem and ensure there are no insects or pests anywhere on the plant. Remember to check on the underside of leaves and along the plant’s stem too, as many

pests will hide or be camouflaged.

Specimens

If you are new to indoor gardening, there are some easy-going plants perfect for beginners. Monstera deliciosa (swiss cheese plant), epipremnum aureum (golden pothos or devil’s ivy), hedera (ivy) and chlorophytum comosum (spider plant), are simple to look after, reasonably priced and will provide lots of attractive greenery.

Potting

Use a good, organic potting soil that has been mixed specifically for indoor gardening. Choose a container with drainage holes, or put a layer of pebbles in the bottom of a container without holes. From traditional terracotta to quirky lamp planters and stands, you can find something to suit every room and plant in your house. Hanging planters are perfect if space is an issue.

Watering

Avoid overwatering and do not let a plant sit in water. In winter, gradually

reduce watering until the compost is almost dry between watering. Cacti and succulents are a good choice of plant for those that struggle with watering or have to spend time away from home. They're pretty tough and resilient, so a good option for the less green fingered too.

Feeding

Liquid feeds are generally the best. For flowering plants choose a feed high in potassium. For foliage plants a more balanced feed is suitable. For certain plants such as orchids specialist feeds will be needed. Most plants should only be fed when actively growing between March and September. Reduce feeding in winter and do not feed plants that are resting.

Maintenance

Most houseplants can be revived by cutting the old or damaged foliage back to the base or by pruning to a healthy bud in spring. Both water and feed well to help recovery. After a year or so you may need to repot to ensure continued growth. Choose a pot a couple of sizes bigger than the original one and check that the compost is moist before repotting. Bardi Symphony Orchestra

The Importance of Being Earnest

Leicester’s Bardi Symphony Orchestra kicks off its 2018-19 season with a concert of well-known classics in the Haymarket Theatre, for so many years a firm favourite of Leicester audiences, and now gloriously refurbished and open again to the public. Following Mendelssohn’s evocative Hebrides Overture Fingal’s Cave, the Orchestra’s own Principal oboe clarinet, bassoon and horn take the solo parts in Mozart’s joyous, sparkling Wind Sinfonia Concertante. The concert concludes with Brahms’s dramatic and ever-popular First Symphony. The Bardi Orchestra is conducted by its permanent Music Director, the Berlinbased Danish conductor Claus Efland.

A new production of one of the funniest plays in English, Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, will be broadcast live to cinemas from the Vaudeville Theatre in London's West End. Wilde's much-loved masterpiece throws love, logic and language into the air to make one of theatre's most dazzling firework displays. Jack, Algy, Gwendolyn and Cecily discover how the course of true love doesn’t run smooth, while Lady Bracknell (Sophie Thompson) keeps a baleful eye on the mayhem of manners. This is the fourth and final play from the Oscar Wilde Season, a year-long celebration of the brilliant Victorian playwright being staged by the Classic Spring Theatre Company.

As the largest theatrical tour of English cathedrals ever undertaken, this will be Antic Disposition’s longest UK tour to date. By the end of 2018, the production will have visited twenty of England’s forty-two cathedrals, including our very own Leicester Cathedral.

Book REVIEW

The Windmill Café: Autumn Leaves

Fall in love with autumn

Farm to Chef: Cooking Through the Seasons

by Lynn Crawford There's nothing more satisfying than going to a farmer's market, picking out the freshest produce and creating vibrant recipes to showcase those ingredients. Farm to Chef takes readers on a year-long journey with 140 original recipes, organised by season. You'll discover how easy it is to prepare fresh market ingredients, with a range of the chef's favourite fruits and vegetables. Whether you're braising, roasting, baking or preserving, these recipes will offer immediate inspiration.

by Poppy Blake As the last rays of summer sunshine fade away, Rosie Barnes swaps serving ice-cold fizz and strawberries for warm, spiced pumpkin latte and chocolate brownies. With time on her hands, Rosie agrees to help gorgeous Matt on one of his outdoor expeditions. But when one of the camping group is shot with a bow and arrow, Rosie knows that if the news escapes, her dreams of building a life at Windmill Café will be over for good. Unless she and Matt can solve the mystery before it’s too late!

Escape to an Autumn Pavement

by Andrew Salkey A brave and pioneering treatment of sexual identity in Caribbean literature, this novel, follows the fortunes of Johnnie Sobert, a Jamaican exile. In flight from his dominant, possessive mother, he immerses himself in the bohemian Soho scene and adopts a wisecracking persona as a cover for his deep-seated insecurities. When he’s not at work, he lives a completely different life in Hempstead. These two worlds provide a lively portrait of Britons reacting to the growing presence of blacks and Asians in their neighbourhoods in the 1960s.

Autumn: An Anthology for the Changing Seasons

by Melissa Harrison In prose and poetry from across the British Isles, Autumn captures both the exhilaration and the melancholy of this turning point in the year. Featuring original writing by Horatio Clare, John Lewis-Stempel and Amy Liptrot, classic extracts from the work of Ted Hughes, Helen Macdonald and Nan Shepherd, and a wealth of fresh new voices, Autumn is an evocative celebration of the year's decline - and new beginnings.

She dreamed of finding her true soulmate. Then Kitty meets Theo, an old flame. Can they find a way to fall in love again? Or is it too late? URBAN FOX OCTOBER 2018 63

Joules

Autumn

ADVENTURE Summer is over and the weather’s turned decidedly chilly. It’s enough to make you want to hibernate until Easter. But if you did, you’d be missing out, says outdoor enthusiast Kirsty France.

The BBQ and flip flops may be packed away but we’ve got loads to look forward to, and no I don’t just mean Christmas. Autumn is the perfect time of year to experience an alfresco adventure – even if you are doing it in a jumper and wellies! Here’s just a few of my favourite places to explore and make the most of the season.

New England

I have to make a confession here. I’ve never actually been to New England, but it’s firmly on my wish list. The images of gorgeous flame coloured trees are enough to make you feel warmer all by themselves. The New England tourist trail takes in Boston, Maine and Vermont so you can experience glorious autumn colours during the day, then warm up with pizza and beer in the evening. I’ve heard that some of the tours also take in the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream factory – you might enjoy it but it all sounds a bit chilly to me.

Grand Tour

If you don’t want to venture that far, October is a great time to travel in Europe. There are lots of family friendly places to go if you’re looking for a half term break with the kids. Bruges is the perfect place to visit for culture and it’s justifiably famous chocolate. For some guaranteed sun, head to Cyprus. Paphos and Limassol are both wonderful at this time of year. If you need a restful break you need only head for the nearest sun lounger.

Highland Fling

If you’re happy to get wrapped up warm to go exploring closer to home, head to Scotland. Edinburgh is lovely in autumn and much quieter now that festival season is over. You can explore the city and climb Arthur’s Seat before getting cosy by a log fire back at your hotel. Further west, you can find spectacular autumn colours in Loch Lomond and the Trossachs. There are plenty of options for serious walkers, but you can still enjoy the views if you’d rather

take it a bit easier. The Millennium Forest Trail is only a mile and a half long and climbs through the oak trees to beautiful views of the loch at the top.

Beach Retreat

You might not want to try sunbathing on a UK beach at this time of year, but you can still enjoy the seaside. A lot of resorts start closing down for winter, but you can still enjoy a walk on the beach followed by some fish and chips.

Autumn is the perfect time of year to experience an alfresco adventure I love going to North Norfolk and am currently planning my first autumnal trip to the New Forest. I’ve visited in the summer but I hear that you can have good walks on the beach combined with lovely autumnal colours as late as November, so I’m going to give it a try. Whatever you decide to do this October, have a great time!

Decleor

Penny Pullen “I get a real buzz looking at the new season ranges” says Penny Pullen, owner of Simply Chique fashion boutique. I was born in Leeds but raised in Oadby. I had three sporty brothers, which it’s fair to say was a ‘challenge’ at times. But at least I can now hold my own at the bar whenever sport is mentioned. Go on, ask me how many ways there are to be ‘out’ at cricket! I first started my retail career as a 15 year old Saturday girl, working at Jeanne of Oadby. After leaving school I continued with my weekend hours at Jeanne, while taking a full time job in a bank. From bank teller, I advanced to personal banker. I really enjoyed the challenge of helping people to choose and organise their accounts. In 1988 I realised that I’d gone as far as I could with the bank and decided to leave, splitting my time between freelance booking-keeper and working additional days at Jeanne of Oadby, which I still loved. Jeanne was hardworking and friendly and I admired her approach to the business. Her concept for the store was “style for the individual lady” and she offered a complete shopping experience.

Customers would pop in for a coffee and a chat, as well as buying great clothes. Jeanne taught me a lot about retail, including knowing your target market and the brands and styles to stock which will appeal to them. Sadly in 1999, Jeanne passed away and I was offered the opportunity to buy the shop. I couldn’t imagine being anywhere else. In memory of Jeanne, I kept the name of the shop as it was but started to look at ways in which to expand our customer base, including appealing to a broader age range of women. I now enjoy helping our younger clients find an individual style that is both contemporary and timeless, and this year I decided that was what the shop needed too. A fresh and modern look that better reflects the brands we stock.

I love running my own business - the challenge, the travel, the flexibility. After writing more than 300 plus names down, I decided to rebrand as Simply Chique. Our new look perfectly blends old with new. We offer stylish, contemporary brands, mixed with a

good old-fashioned personal service, including an honest opinion! I love running my own business – the challenge, the travel, the flexibility. I get a real buzz looking at the new ranges and often select styles with particular clients in mind. This season I’ve added more accessories to our range - shoes, handbags, hats, jewellery – and I can definitely see me diversifying more along those lines in the future. But for now with the rebrand, refurb and refresh just complete, I’m excited about bringing the simplicity, style and service of Simply Chique to our customers, both old and new. The coffee pot is always on! Shop the new season at 4-6 Chapel Street, Oadby, or go online to discover more at simplychiqueuk.com
