Scarf
Chic
If you’re looking for a key item that’ll tap into some of this season’s hottest trends then a lightweight summer scarf is a must have accessory. This month we asked Leicester based fashion designer Daisy Eldridge, why she thinks ‘the scarf’ is perennially chic.
FASHION & BEAUTY “It finishes off your outfit. A print scarf is a great way to lift a plain dress or blazer” “It eliminates the need for any other accessories - necklace, earrings” “A summer scarf provides extra warmth on early morning or late evening walks”
Oriental Flower Scarf £25, East
“Scarves are a great travelling companion, on the plane or as a sarong on the beach”
Tribal Scarf £19, Accessorize
“They’re a flexible addition to your summer capsule wardrobe. Keep to a simple palette of neutrals or nautical navy” “They can help you to create a ‘signature style’. How you wear yours - loose, cape, attached to your Tote should match your personality and lifestyle” “Size doesn’t matter. Clever use of your scarf can disguise anything you don’t want to reveal, while looking effortlessly stylish!”

Hair Today... It’s time to ditch the tights and get those legs summer-ready. But before you reach for the razor, take a look at our guide to fuss free, fuzz free depilation.
Shaving
Warm Waxing
How it works: running a razor along the skin’s surface, removing hairs as you go Best for: all body parts - legs, underarms, arms, bikini area and face Advantages: virtually pain free, simple and quick to do Disadvantages: can cause ingrown hairs, possibility of cutting yourself or irritating the skin
How it works: wax is applied to the skin in the direction of hair growth. Once solidified, fabric strips are smoothed on and quickly stripped off against the direction of the growth, pulling the hair out with it Best for: legs, bikini, eyebrows, underarms and upper lip Advantages: smooth results that last longer than other methods, hair grows back finer and softer Disadvantages: upfront expense, painful, can cause redness and tenderness.
Creams How it works: breaks down the hair’s protein structure, which allows it to be easily removed when cream is removed Best for: all body parts - legs, underarms, arms, bikini area and face Advantages: safe to use, inexpensive and relatively quick Disadvantages: can cause skin irritation, doesn’t remove hair from the root and the smell!
Epilator How it works: removes hair by mechanically grasping multiple hairs and pulling them out Best for: all body parts - legs, underarms, arms, bikini area and face Advantages: can remove hair as short as 0.5mm, gives ultra-smooth results that last up to 4 weeks Disadvantages: can be painful, difficult to use in hard to reach areas and can leave red blotches
The Editor Loves
Hot Waxing
How it works: wax is applied thickly over the area and once cool and hardened it is removed by the therapist without use of fabric strips Best for: bikini, underarms and face Advantages: less painful than warm waxing on sensitive areas, doesn’t leave sticky residue Disadvantages: can take longer than warm wax and can be more expensive
Laser Hair Removal How it works: a narrow beam of concentrated light is focused on small sections of skin. The light destroys hair follicles and prevents hair regrowth Best for: bikini, underarm and upper lip Advantages: much faster and less painful than it used to be and if hair does grow back it tends to be finer Disadvantages: requires multiple treatments that can get very expensive, need to avoid direct sun for up to 6 weeks either side of your treatment to reduce risk of sunburn

HEALTH & WELLBEING
Summer
Eye Care We should look after our eyes the whole year round but in the summer we need to take extra care. We are all aware of the dangers of sunlight to our skin and rightfully take appropriate precautions, like using sun block. But what action should we take to protect our eyes? This month we asked Shockat Patel, Director of Sask Optics in Leicester, his advice on summer eye care.
UV Rays
Rays from the sun have been shown to cause a multitude of problems to the eyes, ranging from minor wrinkles on the eyelids, unsightly blebs on the white of the eyes to sight threatening conditions like Macular Degeneration and even Cancer. Although we may feel we do not get much sunlight in this country, it is important to bear in mind that the UK is exposed to as much or more UV as those countries nearer the tropics. This is because the sun is lower in the clouds, and the highest level of damage to the eyes is not at midday but mid-morning and late afternoon. So what can we do to protect our eyes from harmful sight threatening
radiation? A wide rim hat will offer some protection but is not much good on its own. Wearing sunglasses offers a degree of help but light can creep in from the sides, so a wraparound sunglass offers the best protection. Also wearing a UV blocking contact lenses can offer up to 98% protection. For those that don’t like the idea of wearing sunglasses or contact lenses, there are many clear spectacle lenses that can be treated with a special coating offering up to 25 times greater protection than without any lenses. All these solutions can also naturally be used for children too.
Glare
Glare from sunlight is a yearlong problem. It causes temporary blindness and
can be fatal on the road. This glare affect is worse when the sun is low down and its effect is intensified by the reflection from road surfaces. Logically having your visor down will help as will a clean windscreen, but wearing Polarised sunglasses provides the best protection.
Itchy Eyes
Itchy eyes require an eye examination to determine the exact cause and the most appropriate treatment. Not all eye drops are the same and in fact some may cause more damage than good! I always recommend preservative free eye drops. For any questions about your eyes, contact your optician to discuss further.

HEALTH & WELLBEING
Ditch the
Diet
This month Rebecca Watts from the Metabolic Weight Loss Clinic at Nutrafit, tells us why crash dieting can have serious long term consequences.
Y
es that time of year is here again, the sun has made albeit a brief appearance and we are all starting to plan for our summer holidays. Along with that pre-holiday excitement comes the dread of exposing your body on the beach. If you haven’t
already started cutting back and eating healthy, you are possibly thinking what quick fix crash diet you can do for the next 6 weeks to shed some weight. But before you throw yourself into that quick fix drastic diet, consider the pros and cons below:
Cons
p your Crash dieting will dro e rat c oli tab me g restin if not more Pros Thus you will put all ur holiday yo r fte g/a back on durin Slimmer & lighter for your d lack energy holiday You will be tired an e effect on Results in a short space of time Can have a negativ ir ha d an skin, nails Easier to be motivated for a so more tem d sys perio shorter Lower immune ess illn to ne pro your with fere Doesn’t inter e wastage social life for too long Higher risk of muscl ies use lor ca gh ou en t no n (whe muscle energy)
Studies have shown that over 60% of women diet in preparation for the summer holidays and more than 50% of people put on weight during their holiday and continue to gain after. If you want to take the healthier, realistic option follow the three basic tips below. You will feel healthier and lose a few pounds and inches along the way. These 3 simple steps can help you cut your calories by 300 -500 per day without even counting, helping you lose approximately 1lb a week, strengthen and tone your legs and improve your health. 1. Eat Healthily - rather than dieting, try eating more healthily and you will cut calories without really thinking about it. Eat smaller meals more often, drink less alcohol, cut out junk food and unhealthy snacks, drink more water,
and have plenty of fruit and vegetables. 2. Reduce starchy carbohydrates - no food group should ever be taken from your diet completely, but quite often in western society we eat a high amount of starchy carbohydrates (rice, pasta, bread, potatoes). Try cutting your starchy carbohydrates by 20% on your plate and increasing your vegetable portions to replace them. 3. Be more active - you don’t need to start training for a marathon you just need to be more active in day to day life. A 30 minute to an hour walk a day is a great fat burning activity. Try interval walking - 30 second medium pace, 30 second fast pace and so on. You could always throw in the occasional lunge walk or star jumps to increase intensity.

LIFE & WORK
Travel Insurance
Do I really need it? Being on holiday should be relaxing but inevitably sometimes things can go wrong - stolen passport or money, lost luggage, medical emergency. Whilst purchasing travel insurance is not compulsory, for many the 'it won't happen to me' approach is not a risk worth taking, particularly in relation to costly medical expenses. Cover can vary from insurer to insurer and across their different policy types but a comprehensive product will usually provide you with cover for the following: medical treatment, emergency repatriation, theft, cancellation, loss of baggage and public liability. This month we provide our top 5 tips for getting the best out of your travel insurance this summer:
1
Compare insurance Don’t be tempted to automatically buy travel insurance alongside your holiday or flight. Your travel agent or tour operator may not necessarily offer you the best deal. Shop around comparison websites, your bank, post office etc. - so you know you’re getting a good quality policy at a reasonable price. If you travel three or more times a year an annual policy is likely to cost you less than buying separate single-trip policies.
2
Check existing cover Check what cover you may already have in place. For example if your home contents insurance policy has an ‘all-risks’ clause or personal possessions cover, you may not need additional protection for property you take abroad. Also if you have a ‘packaged’ bank account it may include perks such as travel insurance. Be sure to check that it is comprehensive enough for your needs.
“...the 'it won't happen to me' approach is not a risk worth taking”
3
Read the small print Ensure you know what your travel insurance policy will cover, and that you understand any exclusions it features e.g. Over 65s, skiing, scuba diving, USA & Canada. If there are parts of your policy you are unsure about, ask for an explanation. Finally make sure you look carefully at the value of the excess. If it’s set too high, the policy may be cheaper but may not really be worth having.
4
Tell the truth Don’t neglect to tell your insurance company about any pre-existing medical conditions you or a family member travelling with you has. If you don’t disclose these kinds of details to your insurer, you may be refused a pay-out. Most insurers will also require you to inform them if you develop any new conditions between taking out the policy and your trip.

LIFE & WORK
Finding The Perfect
Summer Job It seems that for students today, finding a summer job is incredibly hard. One reason is that more often than not, teens are now competing for jobs with adults who can fill those positions on a more permanent basis, instead of temporarily for the summer. But for those that are lucky, finding a summer job is a fantastic way to gain skills that will help them develop the professional talents that they'll need through life. These include basic but important skills like customer service, good communication and even gaining self-confidence. But what opportunities are out there?
“a summer job is a fantastic way to gain skills... that they’ll need through life” Summer Schools & Camps It’s fun, they get to work indoors and outdoors, make new friends and best of all they’re getting paid. There are both day camps and residential summer schools / camps to choose from and there’s no need to go overseas, as nearly every school in the area is probably organising one. Festivals Imagine free music, seeing celebrities, having fun and getting paid! If this sounds like your teen’s kind of thing, look online at Just Jobs 4 Students as they advertise for festival workers. Another idea would be to apply to event staff agencies that send their staff for festival jobs.
Office Work It might not be their cup of tea but some people like the security and stability of an office job and there's always the possibility of it becoming a permanent one. The easiest and best way to get office work in the summer is to go through an agency. Alternatively look online or through your local newspaper. Be Their Own Boss Ideas include lawn mowing, house painting, car washing, dog walking, house sitting and childcare. There may well be a niche in your community for someone willing to put themselves out a bit to make a fairly decent amount of money.
Retail & Leisure Jobs Most people go down this route. Retail work does seem alluring and simple but it can be quite hard work and long, unsociable hours. The best advice for retail/leisure jobs would be to apply early. Check out the job vacancy board in Highcross. Manual Work It’s not for everyone but farms, stables, garden landscapers may be looking for extra staff during the summer period. I remember seeing an advert for strawberry picking in France, you get to travel, camp and earn money! Still undecided? Get your teen to list their top ten talents and look at how these could be translated into an income-generating activity. Hopefully they’ll still have time to enjoy the sunshine too!

Up
earing a black leather dress and Louboutins, Michelle Williams, 32, is sporting a newish haircut, a little shaved strip on one side and short and floppy on the other. Playing Glinda, the good witch in Oz the Great and Powerful, we see a different side from her usual tortured and dark roles. She seems to be in a good place in her own life happily raising her daughter Matilda, 7, the product of her relationship with late-actor Heath Ledger, whom she met on the set of Brokeback Mountain in 2004. You seem to have changed your style. Tell us about it? My hair keeps getting shorter (laughs). You know, I’m 32, and I realize that at some point, you have to stop wearing Peter Pan collars. I was comfortable in one thing for a long time, and it felt comfortable, and it’s nice to find something that feels like home; there’s so many choices in the world, what are you going to eat, what are you going to wear, who are your friends going to be? So many choices and it’s actually quite nice to limit them and say, ‘This is my thing.’ Did you see playing Marilyn Monroe in ‘My Week With Marilyn’ as a cautionary tale?
I didn’t think of it necessarily as a cautionary tale, I really just thought about her. I am luckier than she was in the respect that I have a few deeply grounding forces in my life that keep me attached and sane and happy regardless. She started out with such disadvantages early on in life that were far more extreme than mine. She was battling against so much and there was nothing keeping her. No mother, no father, no relations, no marriages that would stick, no children, she just couldn’t find anything to keep her. You’ve done so many dark roles. Was there a sense of wanting to do Oz for your daughter? Yes, it was at the forefront of my mind to do something that felt more holistic and it didn’t feel like my life was so separated into work over here and then family over there. I wanted to merge them a bit, and this was a
really great opportunity to do that. It sounds like you’ve got a healthy relationship with your work. I think a lot of that is because of having a kid. You have no choice, you must put work in its place, you must seal it up; you must put the lid on it. Are you a very relaxed Mum? I try and be pretty relaxed, because if I am relaxed, she will be relaxed. What do you like to do when you’re not working? Well I always have a big idea in my head, like, oh I’m finally going to learn French, and I am going to take up piano and how about those cooking classes. But the reality is I’m making breakfast and packing lunch and cleaning the house and preparing dinner, doing homework and making play dates. That’s it! (laughs)

FILM Review Summer in February
Classification: 15 Showing: Fri 21st - Thu 27th Jun BOX OFFICE: 0116 242 2800 www.phoenix.org.uk
S
et amongst an Edwardian artists’ colony in Cornwall, Dominic Cooper plays artist AJ Munnings - a caddish rogue obsessed with wine, women and song, but best of friends with the impeccably mannered and upperclass Gilbert Evans (Dan Stevens) the local estatemanager of the commune. When beautiful artist Florence Carter-Wood
(Emily Browning) arrives on the estate, the two men find their friendship tested as a love triangle develops with tragic consequences. Adapted from Jonathan Smith’s popular novel of the same name, the makers of this good old-fashioned weepy clearly understand their target audience with the casting of eye-candy Dan Stevens of Downton Abbey fame and the dashing Cooper. Though
the film may at times lapse into melodrama with a slightly stodgy script, there are moments of levity Florence’s father suddenly approves of potential suitor Munnings when he finds out how much he is worth - but overall this is one to
watch with tissue in hand! The most welcome surprise comes from Stevens - his Gilbert is a tortured soul with simmering passion held just beneath the surface - a heartbreaking performance that is worth the ticket price alone.

Heading to the beach this summer? Resident bookworm Debbie James tells us her hottest holiday reads.
Elijah’s Mermaid Essie Fox
Saved from the Thames one foggy London night, Pearl grows up at the House of Mermaids - a brothel that becomes the closest thing to home. But despite being cosseted and spoiled by the Madame, come her 14th year, Pearl is to be sold to the highest bidder. Orphaned twins Lily and Elijah are on a rare trip to London when they meet the ethereal Pearl. The repercussions of this chance encounter will bind all their fates together, in a dark and dangerous way. Bewitching, gothic and sensual, this is a tale of love and betrayal in a world where nothing is quite as it seems.
Seating Arrangements Maggie Shipstead
The Van Meters have gathered at their family retreat on the New England island of Waskeke to celebrate the marriage of daughter Daphne to an impeccably appropriate young man. The weekend is full of lobster and champagne, salt air and practiced bonhomie, but long-buried discontent and simmering lust seep through the cracks in the revelry. Winn Van Meter, father-of-the-bride, has spent his life following the rules of the east coast upper crust, but now, just shy of his sixtieth birthday, he must finally confront his failings, his desires, and his own humanity.

Big Food
WINING & DINING
for Big Appetites
This month’s recipes by Lucy Cufflin from Lucy’s Food.
I find that many summer picnic offerings are light and often dissatisfying for the appetites of hungry teenagers and men. So with Father’s Day just around the corner, here are some of my favourite recipes, to help you create a picnic that packs more of a punch. Now all you need is some sunshine - enjoy!
Giant Sausage Rolls
To make 6 giant sausage rolls
Ingredients: n 1 x 500g pack ready to roll puff pastry n 450g sausage meat n 2 apples coarsely grated and left in a colander for 30 minutes n 6 big spoons of mango chutney n 1 egg beaten to glaze n Fresh sage chopped
Method: 1. Add the chopped sage to the sausage-meat and mix well. 2. Roll the pastry out so that you are making a long oblong approx. 60cm x 15cm. 3. Brush it all over with beaten egg and then spread the sausage meat in a 5cm wide ‘sausage’ along the centre of the pastry. 4. Spoon mango chutney along the top of the sausage meat then fold both edges over so they sealed on the top. 5. Turn it over so the join is downwards and brush all over with beaten egg. 6. Slice into 6 large parts and bake uncovered at 375F/195C for 25-30 minutes or until well risen and a good dark brown.
Try swapping the apple for cheese, and the sage for chilli flakes, or add thyme and grated pears. You could also try lamb mince and apricots with a cumin for a Moroccan flavour.
Homemade Pork Pie
To make a shallow 20cm diameter pie dish
Ingredients: For the pastry: n 250g plain flour n 200g lard n 100ml water n ½ teaspoon salt n Black pepper n Egg to glaze
For the filling: n 450g minced pork n 400g belly pork (rind removed) n 150g pork shoulder chop (no bone) n Fresh or dried sage n 1 teaspoon salt n 1-2 teaspoons black pepper
Method: 1. Make the filling by finely chopping the belly (can be done in a processor), roughly dicing the chop and mixing everything together. You can replace some of the pork with game or duck, you can add spices and herbs or try a layer of smoked bacon. 2. Make the pastry by warming the water and lard till melted and pouring over the seasoned flour. 3. Mix with a spoon then knead with your hands till smooth dough. This should be soft and warm. 4. Roll 2/3 of the dough out to circle and line the tin, put in the filling making a mound in the middle, then roll the final piece of pastry to a circle for the lid. Brush the edges of the pastry in the tin with egg to act as glue and top the pie with the circle of pastry. Press the edges together really well - you do not want it to leak. 5. Trim to a straight edge with a knife make a hole in the centre to allow steam out and glaze all over with beaten egg. 6. Bake at 350F/180C for 1-1½ hours until the juices coming from top are cooked juices. Allow to cool and chill to transport. This will be happy in the fridge for up to 6 days so no need to make at the last minute.

Light Debbie Greasley is the TV Designer for Channel 4’s property show The Renovation Game. This month she shares with us her thoughts on how to create the perfect summer room, or breathe a little sunshine back into your tired conservatory.
W
ith summer hopefully just around the corner there’s nothing better than having the perfect summer room to relax and enjoy the sanctuary of the garden at its best. Whether it’s a conservatory, garden room, or orangery; they all burst with light, give instant warmth and create a wonderful sense of wellbeing.
What’s in a name? Conservatories, garden rooms and orangeries are an added extension usually to the rear of the home. The easiest way to distinguish between them is by the roof structure. Conservatories are completely glass; garden rooms are usually tiled matching the existing building and orangeries have flat roofs with a multi panel glass lantern within a timber structure.
Why do it? • It’s a great way of creating extra space and adding value to your property. • It’s the perfect place for every day dining, relaxing and socialising. • With modern design technology it becomes an all year round living space. • Many do not even require planning permission.
Tips for adding a garden room or orangery An orangery or garden room offer the perfect blend between the light given from a conservatory and the solid living space of an extension: • Research the style. Whether it’s a traditional orangery to suit a period home or a contemporary garden room for a modern building.
• Consider the use of the room. Will the size be appropriate for your needs? • Check for planning permission. Go to www. planningportal.gov.uk • Control your budget. It’s always worth getting two quotes. • Opt for glass that will protect your interior. It can be more expensive, but will save your furnishings from damage. • Plan in advance the desired interior finish. From choosing colours, through to the finishing touches.
Tips for updating the conservatory Older style conservatories tend to be too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter. However, there are many solutions which can help to transform a great living space once again.
• Polycarbonate roofs are not energy efficient. Consider an insulating self-cleaning glass roof. • Some existing bases can be modified to accept bi-folding doors, which will create a sleek contemporary look. • Add underfloor heating. If the existing floor is tiled, either remove the tiles or lay matting on top and add new flooring. • Window coverings are the main focal point of the room. They will protect from direct sunlight and keep the room cool in the summer. • Add decking or a new patio that leads straight from the room to create the illusion of space. Finally to create that feel of relaxation, add comfortable seating, a few plants and accessories and keep clutter free. Then put your feet up relax and enjoy!

Braunstone Frith Infant School Wins Coles Garden Competition
O
n Saturday 27th April Coles Plant Centre in Thurnby hosted their first Open Day. The day saw a variety of attractions including talks, tours and workshops on plant care and maintenance, a bouncy castle and face-painting, plus many special offers in the Plant Centre and even a mini farmers-market! One of the main highlights of the day was an awards ceremony for the Design a Garden Competition featured in our April edition. Coles invited around 100 local schools, as part of their centenary celebrations, to Design a Garden that they would like to have created in their grounds. The winning school, Braunstone Frith Infant School, will have their design made a reality. Carly Stephens, a teacher at Braunstone, commented, “What a great opportunity for us this was, our children really enjoyed designing the garden!” The design focussed on creating a natural habitat for bees and other pollinating insects as well as teaching the children the importance of biodiversity. James Coles, Managing Director, said “Congratulations to Braunstone Frith, we received some amazing entries. Thank you to all the schools that took part. We are all really pleased with how the day turned out; attendance was much higher than expected, the farmers market came together nicely and the weather held out just long enough for us! We will definitely be holding more events in the future”.

Every summer I buy my hanging baskets but this year I thought I would have a go myself. Can you give me some advice on how to plant them and make them last?
A
Making your own hanging basket can be very rewarding. The first step is choosing your basket. There are many types to choose from but if you’re a newbie I would go for one that already has a lining such a wicker or rattan type. Stand the basket in an old flower pot; this will keep it still as you work. Fill with a good multi-purpose compost, and add to this some water retaining gel and slow release fertiliser. Both can be found in small packets at your local garden centre. Follow the instructions on the back, most come with a scoop so

getting the right amount is easy. The gel will swell up when you water your hanging basket and help prevent it drying out. The slow release fertiliser will feed your plants right through the season. The fun bit is planting up. Choose a tall plant to go in the middle to give some height. Something like a geranium or even a small conifer. Next, fill around the top edge of the basket with a mixture of trailing plants and flowering bedding plants. Give it a good water to get it going and hang outside once risk of frost has passed.
I’m new to gardening and when I go to the garden centre I’m confronted by different terms for different plants. What do they mean?
A
These days plant growers seem to use a myriad of terms on their plant labels and it can be quite confusing. Generally these terms are used to describe the life cycle of the plant so your will know how long they will survive in the garden. Annual - a plant that will complete its life cycle - shoot, grow, flower, seed, die - in one year. It
will not grow back the following year, these are usually bedding plants that produce bright flowers in the summer.
flowers from spring to summer. They die down over winter to almost nothing but will then shoot back up year after year.
Biennial - these take two years, usually growing leaves the first year and flowering the next e.g. foxgloves.
Shrubs - provide the back bone to a border. Some may keep their leaves all year (Evergreens), but unlike the herbaceous perennials the lush growth turns Herbaceous Perennials - are woody and gives the plant plants that will come back structure all year. year after year, putting on lush growth and beautiful

Grass is Greener
With the summer months finally here, now’s the time to start venturing into the garden for the family BBQ, summer drinks party or relaxation with the morning newspaper. If your lawn is in need of some TLC, we asked Kevin Toomey of Green Thumb his top 10 tips on getting your lawn summer ready!
1
The ideal length for a household lawn is 1-1.5”, slightly higher during long dry periods. Cutting a lawn too short encourages moss and weeds.
2 3 4
Make sure your mower has a sharp blade and is serviced regularly. Cut weekly during the growing season. Don’t let it get too long or when you cut it, it’ll go brown. A grass plant is made up of 93% water and needs water to survive. Water regularly during dry spells to protect the plant. Use a sprinkler and water for 20-30 minutes on each area. Evenings are best so there is less evaporation of the water.

7 8
Move children’s toys or garden furniture frequently or the grass will die underneath.
Scarify and aerate the lawn regularly, ideally over the autumn/winter period so it has chance to recover for the summer. This will remove a lot of thatch and moss as well as encouraging new growth. Aeration will help the plant absorb water nutrients and oxygen more efficiently so the Now the ground is warming up, it is a good time to re- plant will be healthy. seed bare patches. Rake the ground to create a bed of soil. Sow the seeds with a little top soil and keep well watered, With the climate changing we are seeing more and your patches will soon have new grass. disease within the lawn plant. If you have circular brown patches on your lawn you may well have a disease and to get rid of it you will need to call in the experts. Red Thread, fusarium, and snow mould are some of the most common. Lawns do not like shady areas so cut back shrubs and bushes where possible.

Finally if you have a lot of birds pecking away at your lawn, and it appears to being eaten away it is worth digging into the soil and see if you have leather jackets or chafer grubs. These are maggot-like and eat the roots of the grass plant.

Olympic challenge
to boost hospice appeal
K
evin Toomey, owner of the Rutland and East Leicestershire branch of GreenThumb Lawn Services will be tackling the 100 mile route with friends Paul Ramm and Richard Allen. Starting in London, the 20,000 cyclists will follow a modified version of the London 2012 Olympic road race, finishing in the Surrey countryside. Kevin, who’s 47, only began cycling recently in an effort to get fit. Spurred on by Paul and Richard he’s now an enthusiast, keen to take on the Olympic-sized challenge to raise money for a cause close to his heart. “My wife, Alison, works at Thorpe Hall Hospice,” said Kevin. “Everyone in this area knows someone who has been touched by the work that is done there. This is just my way of supporting the incredible work that is done there.” The trio, all from Stamford, are hoping to raise around £2,000 through their efforts on Sunday, August 4. The money will go straight into the £6 million appeal to fund the building of a state-of-the-art new hospice adjacent to the current building in Peterborough. The hospice cares for people from across Cambridgeshire, Rutland, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire.
Three amateur cyclists are set to follow in the bike tracks of the world’s finest as they take on the Ride 100 charity challenge in aid of the region’s Thorpe Hall Hospice.

My Way...
Jo Tallack
The dynamic General Manager at Highcross talks to us about tadpoles, retail therapy and family ties. I grew up in Taunton in Somerset. I remember having long hot summers and one of my earliest memories was fishing for tadpoles in a stream near our house. Growing up I wanted to be a musical actress and continued with amateur dramatics until work ambitions took over. My first retail job was a temporary position during the Christmas period at Debenhams in Eastbourne. I enjoyed it that much, I stayed for seven years! I loved constantly meeting and interacting with people. The role at Highcross provided me with a new challenge. I visited Leicestershire a number of times before applying for the role and was instantly attracted to both the city and the surrounding countryside, I’ve never questioned my decision to relocate here.
What’s your favourite clothes store? For a little luxury Hobbs and Phase Eight at John Lewis.
What do you do to relax? I exercise hard; to me there is no greater feeling than ‘the burn’.
Last film you watched? TED…that’s all I’ll say on that one!
Moving around with work is both exciting and challenging. It’s difficult to put down roots anywhere and build new friendships. We’ve moved four times now and with all our family including grand children living on the South Coast the distance is noticeable. There’s no such thing as a typical day in my job. I always start each day with a walk around the entire centre, followed by a team meeting on the mall to discuss the day’s events. From that point on the day varies hugely, from meeting store managers, working with heads of departments to discuss marketing strategies, or spending time with city centre management boards. I also represent Highcross at lots of events and functions - so really no two days are the same! It’s no secret that retail is a tough industry to be in at the moment, and Highcross opened at a difficult time in 2008 but incredibly, we’ve managed to achieve our targets and perform better than expected. There are a number of great shops that I would love to see at Highcross, so my focus for the remainder of 2013 is to encourage new stores to open in the centre.
