Hello and welcome to the Bigger! Brighter! Better! Urban Fox lifestyle magazine. Our new look publication contains all the best aspects of its A5 predecessor but is bursting with new features, celebrity interviews, competitions and much, much more. This month in our Fashion, Beauty & Health section we bring you a local exclusive with fashion guru Gok Wan. The local Whetstone lad, turned author and TV presenter, reveals how his own battle with weight as a teenager, continues to impact his life and work today. FOOD FOR THOUGHT GOK WAN INTERVIEW JOURNALIST: RICHARD ALDHOUS

TV style extrovert Gok Wan on devouring his food demons

H

e’s the man who has shaped a thousand men and women, styling a generation of trendsetters and fashion failures alike. Yet up until now the anatomical analysis has played out in one direction, and one direction only. Because for all Gok Wan’s blare and bravado, it’s always been the challenge to make others look good naked... until now. After celebrating a decade in the spotlight as arguably the leading fashion consultant on our television screens, 36-year-old Gok has been brave enough to turn the tables. While other celebrities may release autobiographies as a convenient way of remaining in the public eye or topping up their bank balances, the Anglo-Chinese

presenter and broadcaster has discovered the penning of ‘Through Thick And Thin’ as a remarkable and defining life milestone.

“i don’t tHink tHere is eVer a good time to release an aUtobiograPHy, is tHere?!” He Jokes. “They’re draped with clichés and superstition, but for me it certainly felt like the right time. I didn’t know I was ready to do it, but when I sat down and started putting experiences and emotions into words, it felt right to carry on.” Gok admits that the creative process of the book brought to the fore issues he’d worked hard to keep to one side. Yet there’s a definite desire within the pages to bathe in the cathartic therapy that only an autobiography can provide. And it’s no easy journey. Born in rural Leicestershire to a Chinese father and English mother, Gok’s oriental appearance would always have him stand out in a crowd. In addition, his parents owned a succession of restaurants and he came to regard food not only as a comfort, but a financial savour too. “I was bullied and teased because of my cultural background. From that, food became my best friend – and we saw much too much of each other.

And of course, I had a strong yet completely flawed understanding of what food was - that was linked in some way to my parents’ business. From something like that, things spiral. “I hung around with the stranger and less-liked in school because I was, in turn, disrespected by those who saw my heritage and my frightening 21-stone teenage frame as different and unacceptable.” Add in issues over his sexuality and Gok was a child in an unhappy place. “One day though I had an epiphany (and some may say, my first makeover) when I asked my mum to take me out to buy some new clothes. We went to Next and I got a pair of chinos, brown suede shoes and a jumper, and I had my hair cut and styled.

A disastrous crash diet – in which he lost half his weight in just a few months – was extreme. “I guess that diet symbolised the confusion that was still going on inside me,” he admits. “I desperately wanted to be that other person, but at first I had to shake off the perception of myself that I was unworthy. And that was tough to do.” That Gok did pull himself out of a trap of self-loathing and social exclusion is remarkable. And in working his way up through make-up departments on television and film sets, he forged his own career; one that in 2011 enables him to thrive on shaping the physical and psychological goals of others. “I’ve worked with some major celebrities over the years, but the ultimate for me is being around ordinary members of the public. We started ‘How To Look Good Naked’ in 2006; it has been - and continues to be - an amazing experience, showcasing fantastic people with incredible stories. We’re confronting issues that are right up there, because body image and appearance is arguably more important to people

in 2011 than at any point in the past. “What I do is certainly heart-warming for others, and it’s about reaching and assisting the right people, but I must admit the shows continue to help me to face my own demons.

M

y children and I were heading speedily homewards, as their feeding hour was due, when out of the corner of my eye I saw it...THE perfect winter coat. MY winter coat, the one I had been searching for all season. There it was hanging just inside the shop and before I knew it I had dived in through the door, grabbed the hanger, and was trying it on. And how good did I look? Colour wonderful, style and fit perfect! Oh yes, this really was mine and I was at the till paying before the children could complain (well nearly).

Although born a Gatherer, out of necessity I have learnt to become a Hunter. I dash in, attack the garment, club it to death and then carry it home victorious! In the years BC (before children) I would have started at one end of the high street and purposefully covered the ground, sussing out exactly where the very best patch of berries were, before returning there to make my purchase. Neither method is right or wrong, nor is it dependant on your gender. Love shopping or hate it, we are all very individual in our approach. Sometimes, as Hunters, we go shopping absolutely determined to find one particular item. We become so focussed that all the other wonderful garments are overlooked. Gatherers on the other hand are in danger of going back to the same old bushes, buying the same old style because it’s safe. But let’s face it, a bit boring too! If we understand some of the psychology behind our shopping patterns we can escape our comfort zone and learn to have far more positive experiences. Hunter or Gatherer, it helps

to understand what works for you and relate it to the trends in the shops. This will leave you looking and feeling great as well as avoiding paying for clothes that you simply don’t wear. In my next column I will be answering some of the most commonly asked questions I have been asked during my years as an image consultant. The Jockey vying to make you smile Sam Waley-Cohen is a man on a mission. A mission to make you smile.

his year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup winner is for most people known as a jump jockey. This is understandable.

At Christmas he won the season’s Christmas Classic the King George VI at Kempton, followed by glory at the Cheltenham Festival, before coming second in the Grand National. What less people know is that this is not his profession. He rides as an amateur, for the love it. For work he is aiming to make Leicestershire smile in a different way, through his dental practices, Portman Healthcare. An unusual combination? Putting aside the opportunity to find clients in the weighing room, dentistry and racing do not seem to be natural bedfellows. But then little is normal in WaleyCohen’s life. A third string to what some would call his professions is possibly ‘match- making’.

He hit the headlines before this year’s Royal wedding, credited with getting Prince William and Katherine back together again. So between acting as cupid and riding how did he come to be running dental practices? “To be honest it was a bit of a

light bulb moment” he says. “I was laughing with some friends about the Austin Powers stereotype of terrible British smiles and it made me think ‘why do we have such terrible teeth?’ We are a first world country, who care about our health and our appearance, and yet often don’t look after one of the most fundamental areas of both, our teeth! It made me reflect on my own experience of going to the dentist and why I didn’t go

more. Basically I wasn’t going because I didn’t feel the dentist was there to look after me! I couldn’t get an appointment when I wanted one, the dentist didn’t explain what treatment I needed or how much it was going to cost. All in all it wasn’t a great experience. I wanted to bring something new to dentistry. To demystify it. In a nutshell to bring expert clinicians together with a much more accessible approach.


My aim is to make sure people can get great care, with great service at a price they can afford. They should be at least 6 cylinders in a straight layout, consume petrol, be 4.2 litres in capacity and nothing less would do! levels, Jaguar have recently launched the 2.2 litre, 4 cylinder XF model.

Having spent some time with an early production 2.2, I have to say how quickly my pre-conceived notions were banished and how good this car really is. Start-up revealed a very nicely insulated and smooth engine with only a vaguely noticeable 4 cylinder thrum. The car pulled away very cleanly from standstill and provided a constant power delivery to the required speed with the very minimum of fuss. One journey which combined motorway, city driving and hurried cross country delivered fuel consumption of over 40 miles per gallon which for a car of this size is very respectable. The claimed 52.3 mpg on the combined cycle does not seem to be unrealistic. This low fuel consumption is assisted by the incorporation of an 8 speed automatic gearbox

into all 2012 XF models, including the 2.2 we are testing here. You might ask why it is necessary to have 8 speeds when 6 are probably quite sufficient. But at a constant 70 mph, the engine rotates at 1500 rpm. The benefits are clearly quite incredible! Another advance seen on the 2.2 litre car is intelligent stop/start technology, which is quite a feat on an automatic. This allows the engine to stop when the car is at a standstill and will restart as soon as your foot is removed from the brake pedal. Start-up is instantaneous and entry into roundabouts and other road junctions can be handled with absolute confidence. The stop/start system will work when the car says it can work and you have to have faith in the car to decide when the appropriate conditions are for the system to become operational. Other detail changes for the latest XF models are slimmer headlights which include daytime running

lights, new rear lamp LEDs and boot lid detail, revised infotainment and touch-screen layout and different, softfeel dashboard switches. There are a host of under skin enhancements that build on the XF’s multi award winning design and reliability. To conclude, Jaguar can be rightly proud of what they have achieved with this car. It is a 4 cylinder car that needs absolutely no apologies. Indeed it should be bold and shout about what it offers in terms of driver comfort, fuel economy, levels of specification and a general feeling of wellbeing.

If your little one has had a bad night or they’re due a feed then it’s probably best to leave the camera alone until things have calmed down and you can get more relaxed pictures. Believe me, red or tearful faces never translate in to winning pictures. In the early days try and avoid using your camera’s flash by using window light instead. If you’re outdoors, go and find some shade rather than bright direct sunlight, this will avoid squinting and you’ll be rewarded with pleasing

results. The first month is also the time to get some scale shots of their hands and feet.

If you’ve got a close-up setting on your camera use that, or if you have a DSLR use a macro lens to fill the viewfinder for the best results. A great way to get a head and shoulders portrait is to go for the ‘over the shoulder’ shot, with baby looking over a willing volunteer’s shoulder. Come in close again to fill the viewfinder and focus on the eyes. If you’ve a zoom lens, then use the longer end -100mm say and if you’ve a portrait setting also use that. With a DSLR go for the aperture priority mode and set a wide aperture of f2.8 or f3.5 for example so that the background drops out of focus and all the viewers’ attention will be drawn to your bundle of joy rather than the room behind. Don’t forget props, a hat or a toy can not only add a sense or scale but

can instantly add the “ahh” factor. They also have the added benefit of keeping the little one’s attention and adding colour to your photo. Why not try setting your camera to its black and white mode. Any picture instantly looks timeless and classic and because it’s different to your normal day to day experience it’s more arresting and arty! So that’s it, easy really! Well maybe not. With baby photography you’ll find that there’ll be quite a lot of “nearly got it” photos and only a few great shots. But despite how much you adore the little one,

An audience with… Sir Peter BLAKE, Brad FAINE & Brendan NEILAND Following a joint exhibition ‘Icons Perceptions Metaphors’ at Leicester’s New Walk Museum this summer, on Wednesday 28th September three of Britain’s leading contemporary artists will be in town.

ir Peter Blake, the Godfather of British Pop Art; Brad Faine, a master printmaker and Brendan Neiland, one of the country’s foremost painters and printmakers, will open a new exhibition of collectable art at the Frog & Mouse Picture Company’s Gallery in Cank Street, close to St Martin’s Square in the Heritage Quarter. The artists will attend an exclusive lunch at the nearby The Case restaurant. Attendance at the lunch is by ticket only and profits will be donated to the British Heart Foundation’s 50th Anniversary ‘Mending Broken Hearts Appeal’, which all three artists have been supporting with their contribution to the ‘Breath of Life Portfolio’ currently on show at the Gallery.

Sir Peter Blake, 80 years old next birthday, is renowned for his connection with the music industry. He famously produced the iconic Beatles’ ‘Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ album cover, plus others for Paul Weller, The Who and Oasis. His work crosses all generational divides, and inspires great respect from younger artists such as Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin. Many of Sir Peter’s works feature printed materials such as photographs, comic strips or advertising texts, combined with bold geometric patterns and the use of primary colours. Brendan Neiland was ‘The Keeper’ of The Royal Academy Schools for two years and enjoys continued success as a painter and printmaker. n case you didn’t know, juniper’s the main flavouring for gin and knowing London gin distillers source juniper berries in the Alps, I went on a search whilst on my summer walking holiday. To my delight they were next to every mountain track and conveniently ripe in late August. Perfect timing to add wonderfully pungent flavour to any autumn stew or vegetables! When I lived in France a favourite recipe was beef with blackcurrant and juniper –easy, fruity and aromatic and loved by children and grown-ups alike. For the blackcurrant I used a good glug of crème de cassis but for that

You can of course buy juniper berries from the spice rack in most stores so don’t think you have to walk up a steep mountain track to try this recipe treat the family or share it with friends as the autumn evenings approach.

Tells us about your restaurant and the idea behind it?

W

e named the restaurant Firenze after the Italian city (Florence) where Lino and I met working together. We wanted a name that meant something to us.

Since opening in October 1999 we have enjoyed ongoing recognition in The Good Food, Michelin and Hardens guides. Most recently we have been awarded 2 Rosettes by the AA Guide. What is the philosophy and vision behind your cuisine? To produce honest Italian food with a modern twist, that transfers it from being simply good, into excellent and exciting. Our award winning wine list offers a whistle stop tour of Italy’s vast

and historic viniculture, as well as the new and innovative blends. How would you describe the ambience in your restaurant? Firenze is reminiscent of a little bit of Italy, fresh in the summer and warm in the winter. On busy nights it’s buzzing and lively and yet on quieter days it lends itself to a sense of intimacy. Children can come too but we have found in recent years that children feel more comfortable in our sister restaurant Boboli, over the road in Kibworth Harcourt. What is your signature dish? There are two dishes that spring to mind. People drive for miles for our risotto and panna cotta. In twelve years and 48 menus, there has always been both on the menu in one guise or another.

Do you cater for special dietary needs? Yes, indeed! Call to empower ‘hidden’ BME Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community tHoUsands oF PeoPle witH a Varying degree oF Hearing loss From black, minority and etHnic (bme) backgroUnds across leicester and leicestersHire

eaf-led organisation, Action Deafness (AD), believes there are 18,000 people with some degree of hearing loss, from mild to profound, in the city and county from BME communities – and that only a fraction are accessing the important services they are entitled to.

last year tHe organisation laUncHed a sPecial ProJect Under tHe banner oF its ad cUltUral arm, called Hearnow, to tackle tHe cHallenge oF sUcH Hard to reacH commUnities and encoUrage more PeoPle to come Forward. The HearNow project has registered almost 400 clients, who are taking advantage of specialist services and advice – including free British Sign Language (BSL) courses and D/deaf Awareness Training - but knows there are many Deaf and Hard of Hearing people in BME communities it has not yet reached. Jaz Mann, AD Cultural Manager, believes traditional cultural attitudes reinforce stigmas

and fear of disability. This, he says, means many Deaf and Hard of Hearing people from BME communities remain reluctant to access services. Language difficulties also play a part and impressions that mainstream services provided are not sensitive or culturally appropriate. The HearNow project is staffed by trained professionals from BME backgrounds who have been talking to BME organisations, to families and to Deaf and Hard of Hearing people in the heart of their communities. Mr Mann, who is himself profoundly Deaf, said: “We are working directly with BME communities at grassroots level to offer appropriate support to Deaf and Hard of Hearing people and their families. But we know we have only

scratched the surface - and that there are thousands of people with a hearing loss from BME communities across the city and county who remain ‘hidden’ and are not accessing the services they are entitled to. This is often due to stigma and cultural barriers. This can mean they lead lives isolated from the rest of society, never fulfilling their potential.” Mr Mann said:

Also the reason we all know the ‘Victoria Plum’, ‘Conference Pear’, ‘Bramley Apple’, ‘Morello Cherry’ etc. is because they are proven reliable croppers that are fairly disease resistant. So if you are the sort of gardener that would like to be able to pick fruit

straight from your own tree but without having to do too much work, then pick the dependable varieties, albeit they’re the ones you can buy in the shops. other things to consider include: n Keep your fruit trees small, so harvesting the fruit is easily within reach.

Don’t compromise – whilst it’s tempting to go for the cheapest option, pay particular attention to factors including quality of design, paper density (gsm), minimum print run requirements and turnaround time.
