New community currency system coming to Valemount Joshua Estabrooks
editor@thevalleysentinel.com
T
here is a movement afoot that plans to revolutionize the local economy throughout the Columbia Basin. A group of ambitious community members from Nelson, Fernie and Kimberley, have taken a model developed in the Comox Valley by Michael Linton, and adapted it to apply to communities within the Columbia Basin. The concept is to find a system of monetary exchange that not only encourages shopping locally, but also helps support local non-profit and community groups find much needed funds. One of the organizers, Billy Jones, said that the system has been proven in other parts of the world, and they have had lots of interest in the three communities where it has been introduced recently. “We have had a wonderful response from the first three communities, and we are seeing if there is interest in Valemount, Cranbrook and Rossland as well.” But how does it work, one might ask. Jones said it is a simple concept once it is fully understood, and can have many positive results once it builds momentum in a given community. “We print the physical money but we also have online accounts. Businesses have an account, non-profits and community groups have an account and individuals have their own accounts too.” To get it going, Jones said the local businesses donate (from their community dollar account) to the nonprofit groups, who then in turn sell them to individuals and other businesses on a 1-1 basis, meaning you pay one Canadian dollar to the local group and receive one community dollar in return. The community dollar can then be used at participating businesses throughout the region. “Individual businesses can set how much of a purchase can be made with community dollars, and the system continues to grow.” The recommendation is that a business donates $1,000 community dollars per employee to get the ball
rolling, said Jones. “The money stays in the community and more people will want to transact with participating businesses. This means more money will go to nonprofit organizations that will do more work in the community. It is like a little engine that drives the prosperity in the local community.” Businesses that donate can also receive tax credits if the group they choose to donate too is a registered charity, said Jones, and once they have local banks on board anyone can go in and purchase community dollars and choose which group they want their Canadian dollars to go to. “As it grows, the participating businesses can carry out their business to business transactions in community dollars as well. They can give them to their staff as bonuses. The possibilities are endless.” Fernie organizer, Dawn Deydey, said that she connected with some people in Valemount who expressed interest in the idea, which is why the community is being included in the plans. “Michael Linton, who started the
LETS system is mentoring us in this project and we are excited about the possibility of it being Basin wide. We are currently looking for interested people, businesses and community groups in Valemount to participate to confirm that there is interest in bringing this program to Valemount. If you think Valemount should be involved or if your community organization and/or business would like to participate, we need to hear from you, now. We would love to include Valemount in the plans for the launch of this exciting community building project, but we need to know the community wants it.” More information on the concept can be found at www.communitydollars.ca. There is also a contest running to design the currency, and Valemount artists are being asked to submit proposals for the design of the $1.00 bill. So please, if you’re interested in this concept, visit the website and provide some feedback, and stay tuned to The Valley Sentinel for more updates on this interesting idea.
New stone mason ready to “Rock the Robson Valley”

ireplaces, foundation walls, dry stack retaining walls, steps, flake stone patios, pathways, fire pits, stone benches – McBride resident Adam Roth is your man to create it all. Roth, who owns Adam Roth Stonemasonry, said he has always been interested in the older trades. “My family is a little bit old-fashioned,” he said with a smile. “We have a friend who is a stone mason. He came up here a while back and looked at the rocks and suggested getting into selling them. In 2008 I went to Vancouver and worked with our friend for a week. Then I came back and started doing it. A lot of it is just practice.” His first real job was for McBride Mountain Sports. “I got lots of interest from that. I’ve been doing
(stone masonry) steady since.” Roth said all the rocks he uses for his work are local, from old dry creek beds and gravel pits. “My dad has a permit to take rocks out.” He also has an arrangement with Burnco, which allows him to buy rock from them. Roth uses a variety of stone styles, such as river rock, ledge stone where you can see the grain in the rock -, and split facing. The rocks also come in different colours. He has created a variety of fireplaces as well as repaired fireplaces and restored them to their original style. He would also like to get into making European style fireplaces called Kachelofen. “I want to learn everything,” he said. “(Stone masonry) is the most patient, tedious job, but when it’s done, it’s really

cool. It’s one rock at a time. What I am really interested in getting into is prefab stone articles such as pillars, birdbaths, rain catchers, and fire pits, things I can make and put on a truck and ship out of the valley.” Roth also works with cultured stone. “It’s light, that’s why it’s popular,” he said. Roth, whose slogan is “Rocking the Robson Valley”, said he is very flexible. “I am open to people’s suggestions. If they have their own special rock, I am happy to use that. I always try my best to create what they want.” He added that he could offer a good price as he collects the stone locally himself. For more information contact Adam Roth Stonemasonry at 250569-6809.

The pressure to communicate
R
emember the days of the Pony Express? Well I don’t either, but I have seen a bunch of movies about it. I got an instant text cell phone message from my father this morning, and as it was at an hour when most people under 40 would still be in bed, I responded later on. He replied promptly, stating that he had sent his last message “hours ago” to which I responded, “Just because we live in a world capable of instant communication doesn’t mean we have to instantly respond to communication,” which is completely true, but something we don’t always think about anymore. Yes, I can receive messages instantly, and e-mails and eventually I might even have them directly implanted into my brain, but do we really need this kind of communicatory pressure to respond as quickly as possible? Because technology has caused our universe to shrink, does it mean we have to be slaves to our devices? If I am heading out the door, and I receive an email, why do I feel the need to postpone my plans to respond as quickly as possible? I wouldn’t have even received this message for months, back in the day. The other thing I find interesting about our modern day communication is that we get such tiny bits of correspondence. Have you ever received a message that simply states, “okay”, or “lol”? Think about that for a moment. Not only is it a waste of paper, if we were back in letter writing days, but it would also be completely irrelevant by the time it arrived at its destination. Our communication is getting more instantaneous, yes, but it is also getting short and choppy, which is good and bad, depending on how you look at it. Now don’t get me wrong. I am not a Luddite. I have the utmost respect for our technological advancements, but I recognize that some of them have encouraged bad habits in the world of communication. I will be the first to admit that instant communication has numerous advantages when it comes to the workplace and also in keeping in touch with our friends and family, but we have to remain conscious of the fact that it does pressure us to be “on the spot,” so to speak. How many of us have regretted a message the instant we hit send? These kinds of faux pas would not exist in the days of physical letter writing, because the time it takes provides the opportunity for reflection on what it is we’re writing. So if you are expecting an e-mail from me, and it isn’t regarding some time pressing matter, it might take a couple of days. But please don’t fret, it doesn’t mean I’m not appreciative of your communication. It just means I want to give my response the time and effort it deserves.

Thank you for your support Valemount Dear Editor;

hey say it takes a community to raise a child. Well the community of Valemount should be very proud at the way they help raise their young athletes! The Valemount Senior Girls volleyball team was put in a pinch to raise money when they made it to the Provincial Championships. They had a week to raise money to go. The community of Valemount was so generous in giving donations to these girls. People gave bottles for their bottle drive, gave the girls money to put toward the expenses, gave food to the team to take on their five day trip, and a person who used to live in Valemount, a true Valemountonian, offered the girls to stay at his house in Abbotsford. Without the generous donations from the com-
munity, the girls would not have been able to make this trip to the provincials in Abbotsford. The community should be very proud of the way they helped our athletes go compete at a provincial level. A big thanks to everyone that donated, including: LDM Road Maintenance, Monashee Springs Water, RD Mechanical, Spaz Logging Ltd., Monashee Motors, EMS staff, Willis and Irene Blackman, Loren Balon and Desaray Williams, Sabine Grigat, Shannon Dodgson, Ellen Duncan, all of the players’ parents, all of the community that donated bottles, and finally, all of the girls that worked so hard to get to this position. Thank you Valemount, be proud!!! Cheri Dehnke “Coach” Valemount

Local paramedic reaches resolution with licencing office Joshua Estabrooks
editor@thevalleysentinel.com
M
cBride resident, Vanessa ByronStanley, has been battling the licencing department of BC Ambulance Service (BCAS) for over five months, and recently had her licence to be a paramedic reinstated after a round of emergency meetings and countless hours of work by Byron-Stanley herself. The controversy is not unique to her situation, she said, as many other
Byron-Stanley entered her information into the system last summer, but when she looked at her file in January she saw that the information hadn’t been recorded. “I phoned them and said something wasn’t right, and they said that their computer system is down and it hasn’t been updated. They never update until the end of submission time so no one really knows if what was submitted was recorded or not. I said I knew I submitted and they told me not to worry about it.” Even still, Byron-Stanley went back
“I have nothing but positive things to say about my fellow employees and the unit chief in this situation. It’s just so frustrating that it took so long to reach this conclusion. It never should have happened in the first place.” ~ Vanessa Byron-Stanley
paramedics throughout BC have had difficult dealings with the licencing department, most of who give up or move on to something else. But not Byron-Stanley, as she said she felt she was the victim of a bureaucratic glitch. “The story is still so much bigger than myself. So many paramedics are affected by licencing and licencing is not accountable to anybody. All these other paramedics either give up and walk away or rewrite all these exams and jump through all their hoops and pay the money.” Byron-Stanley’s ordeal began last year, but she was unaware there was a problem until mid way through the summer. All paramedics have to submit what they call patient contacts, which document emergency calls in order to maintain their licence. There is a minimum requirement of 20 patient contacts, said Byron-Stanley, as well as an IV start log and proof of continuing education credits, all of which must be submitted by March 31.
into the ambulance station and reentered her information, which takes about two and a half hours, she said. “I re-entered the patient contact information in front of two other employees. They would have no reason to lie about this. They are honourable members of our community.” Having re-entered her information, Byron-Stanley felt she was covered, but in July she received word from her unit chief that her licence had been suspended. “I had no clue what it was about, so I phoned licencing and they said it’s because I didn’t have patient contacts in. I asked to appeal the decision and they said no. The appeal was in June and they said we were notified. They told me it was my responsibility to make sure they receive the patient contact information.” Her only course of action, if she didn’t feel like fighting the decision, was to retake all of her training and exams, which she said, would have cost over $500.00 plus travel and ac-

Thank you very much! THANK YOU!!
commodation costs to Prince George. “I left for vacation the next day, and when I got back I wrote them another letter, which got rejected.” Finally, licencing agreed to an appeal meeting, said Byron-Stanley, which occurred in September. Before the meeting, she went and re-entered all of her information for a third time, and faxed multiple copies of the info from three different fax machines to the licencing office, but there was still no acknowledgment of receipt. “This is when the problem became even bigger. I have two letters from witnesses saying they saw me entering it. I have a petition signed by 160 members of this community, but still nothing. This is when I decided to engage the media and my local MLA.” Fortunately, this is where the story reaches a positive conclusion, as through her efforts Byron-Stanley did have her licence reinstated, but those who made the decision gave no real reason. “It has been such a long hard five months fighting this, and I just felt so alone for much of it. When I got this latest e-mail I wondered if I had’ve gone to the media earlier would I have saved myself a couple months of this?”
The main issue, from Byron-Stanley’s perspective, is that the Union that represents BCAS employees is not able to work as effectively as they could because both licencing and the union are legislated differently by the province. She said that everyone on her crew, including the unit chief, were very supportive, and did everything they could do, but in the end their hands were tied. “I have nothing but positive things to say about my fellow employees and the unit chief in this situation. It’s just so frustrating that it took so long to reach this conclusion. It never should have happened in the first place.”

The community of Valemount helped raise almost $250,000 to provide up to 120 square metres of additional space and enhancements to help make the building a local centre for arts and recreation, as well as community gathering place. Police interrupt smash-o-rama On Thursday, December 9, Valemount RCMP Constable Simon Bentley happened upon a group of four local youths who decided to enter Lou Hartman’s storage shed next to the trailer park on Elm Street after receiving a call from concerned residents. The four youths were between the ages of 8 and 12, said Bentley, and were very surprised to be caught red handed. Bentley said that he had a chat with the mischievous foursome and had them all contact their parents to tell them what they had done. He will be following up with the youths, and is expecting a call from Hartman once he returns to the area. Improved Electrical Power to the Robson and North Thompson Valley During a community-to-community forum held last October in the Robson Valley, a motion was passed to work with Kamloops and Prince George, the two regional districts, and Simpcw First Nations to “improve electrical power, highways natural gas and broadband Internet in the Robson and North Thompson valleys.” B.C. Hydro said during the recent UBCM convention that extending a power line southeast from Prince George to connect with one at McBride would be the best way to improve electricity available in the North Thompson Valley. The Clearwater Council voted to send a letter to B.C. Hydro regarding upgrading the power connection in the North Thompson valley.
Valemount Curling Club In a recent letter to the Village of Valemount, the Valemount Curling Club expressed interest in any used tables and chairs any organizations might wish to dispose or sell at a reasonable rate to the Curling Club for use at their larger events. Anyone with any suggestions can contact their President, Gerry Piper.
Former Mayor Battles for the Soul of Canada Former Mayor, Jeanette Townsend, said during her “six terms as Mayor, many times it was brought to [her] attention that not enough time and thought is given to helping the young people in our nation. Many of them are distressed. They feel somewhat aimless because they don’t trust the direction that the nation is heading, and they have concerns.” Being involved with the Anglican/United Church, the RCMP and getting quarterly reports, the plight of young people was really starting to touch her heart and her concern about the future welfare of this country. A book Battle for the Soul of Canada by Rev Ed Hird is “an excellent book,” she said, and “a very timely title for a book, because it is a battle for the soul of our nation, and the battle for the soul of the children who will be our future leaders in this country.” You can check out her video online at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bjaEN52lP4

Previously it was the responsibility of individual merchants to clear out front of their premises. SUDOKU AND CROSSWORD PUZZLE
COMPARROT
HOROSCOPE ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Take a moment to breathe, Aries. All of this running around has left you more frazzled than ever before. Relationships may suffer if you don’t slow down.
LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, someone you’ve counted on in the past proves unpredictable this week. Rather than dwell on what cannot be changed, find someone responsible.
TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21
SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22
Taurus, family matters must take precedence over personal issues this week. A close friend arrives to pitch in and help smooth things over.
Scorpio, things are a bit rocky at home but you are a survivor. Just wait out this rough patch and you will find that things return to normal in no time at all.
GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21
SAGITTARIUS-Nov Dec21
Gemini, romantic endeavors take a back seat to other pressing issues. Don’t worry, there will be time to spend with a special someone in a few days. Until then, get other work done.
A simple change in attitude can bring on an entirely new perspective, Sagittarius. Rather than go with the status quo, try a few new things and see how it goes.
CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22
CAPRICORN-Dec 20
Cancer, consider an alternate way of doing things this week. It’s fine to go against the grain once in a while. But others won’t want you to make it a habit.
23/
22/Jan
Take a chance on an adventure, Capricorn. It’s good to play by the rules most of the time, but a little excitement can be good for the system. Leo wants to come along.
LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23
LAST WEEKS ANSWERS SUDOKU/CROSSWORD
Leo, you may be passed over for a promotion but don’t let it get you upset. Your time will come in the near future. Simply be patient and you will be rewarded. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22
Aquarius, leave room for a little mystery. While it’s your nature to analyze, play it free and easy this week and enjoy the spontaneity that comes with such an approach. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 The financial stars are smiling in your favor, Pisces. That big-ticket purchase has your name on it. Go out and get it.
1221 Week of 12.20.2010
Bide your time, Virgo. The best things come to those who wait, and you’re about to reap the rewards of your patience in the next few days.
AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18
