Busy weekend for Valley sports fans!

McBride Secondary Student, Jesse Ford, shoots while under pressure during a round robin Senior Boys Basketball Tournament. The event was the season opener for the McBride Mustangs, who put in a strong performance on Friday and Saturday.

Late Monday afternoon, a fire broke out at 1175 3rd Avenue in Valemount. Volunteer fire fighters and local RCMP secured the scene within minutes, and had the growing flames under control quickly. The lone occupant at the time evacuated the house and took refuge at the neighbours as the trees around the property began to catch fire. As of press time the cause of the fire had not been determined. Photo By Joshua Estabrooks

Congratulations go out to the Valemount Senior Girls Volleyball Team, who traveled to provincials in Abbotsford this weekend. The girls met some strong competition during their seven matches. Coach Cheri Dehnke said she was incredibly proud of everyone on the team. The team failed to place, but getting to the tournament is an accomplishment all on it’s own. Photo Submitted.

Calling empty; Robson Valley faces logging truck shortage Joshua Estabrooks

editor@thevalleysentinel.com

T

he Robson Valley is facing a major shortage of logging trucks, which is threatening to affect harvesting plans throughout the region. The shortage is province wide, said Valemount Community Forest General Manager, Shane Bressette, and has been caused by a combination of more mills operating and less truck drivers available for work. “There are less trucks, so now that a few of the bigger mills have

fired up there aren’t enough trucks to go around to service everybody.” Bressette is confident that the problem will sort itself out, but it has forced the community forest to increase its trucking rates, which affects everyone’s bottom line. “It has slowed up the movement of our wood. We had a bunch decked up from the summer that we were going to blitz out this winter but now the contractors are having some trouble moving some of those decks.” The wood is moving, he added, but the longer timeline means increased costs

for local contractors. The shortage has spawned a round of collaborative discussions with other community forests and mills, said Bressette, as well as fuel companies who service truck drivers. “The trucks may be out there but drivers are hard to come by too. When the industry slowed down a lot of them have gone on to other things, and they are not as keen to come back now. I have heard some people are scrambling to buy equipment to get back in so we’ll see how it all plays out.” Marc von der Gonna, General Man-

ager of McBride’s community forest, said that some of his small market loggers are buying their own trucks to deal with the shortage, as it is affecting their operations as well. “It is an issue across the province. I think a lot of people just sold out and got out of it or switched to other types of trucking and they’re not as quick to come back into forestry.” Both Bressette and von der Gonna are monitoring the situation, they said, and will adjust their operations as trucks become more or less available accordingly.

Valley Students take stand to end violence against women Donalda Beeson Contributor

D

ecember 6th marked the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, and the Montreal Massacre, where one man shot 28 women and killed fourteen at L’Ecole Polytechnique in 1989. Both the Valemount and McBride Youth Teams conducted a white ribbon campaign in their respective schools. Reasons to wear a white ribbon, they said, include, “creating wide-scale awareness about the positive role that men can play in bringing an end to violence against women; to enable leadership, particularly by men and boys, to bring about social change; and to build collective knowledge and understanding of the effective prevention of vio-

lence against women.” All the students chose to take and wear a ribbon. The program’s coordinator, Shelly Battensby said Respectful Relationships (RR) addresses all relationships, and “is a school-based violence prevention program that is delivered to youth, ages twelve to seventeen as a partnership between Robson Valley Support Society and School District 57.” The Youth Teams act as youth ambassadors in their schools, and “trained in leadership and facilitation skills, and social justice issues,” they assist with classroom facilitation. The classroom delivery component consists of twelve sessions per grade, and is delivered by both a male and female facilitator. The award-winning program was developed SOLAR HOT WATER SYSTEMS

(registered with Solar BC for rebate) GARN SMOKELESS HYDRONIC WOOD HEATERS SOLAR, WIND

by Salt Spring Women Opposed to Violence and Abuse (SWOVA), in response to an increase of social problems among their youth, and the program has been cited by United Nations Habitat as Good Practice in youth violence prevention. The Robson Valley Support Society has been delivering this program in the Valley schools since 2008. As Gandhi said, “You must be the change you want Donalda Beeson/The Valley Sentinel to see in the world,” and The five members of the Valemount Youth Team, Liam Mastre, these students seem to be Carey Newby, Mackenzie Harley, Marissa Dutra, and Kristen doing just that. The gathering of sports fans

I

t seems in the winter, if you really want to keep your finger on the pulse of the Robson Valley, one need only attend the local arenas for a hockey game. It’s truly remarkable, having grown up not really paying much attention to activities in my local arena, the amount of community spirit and interaction that goes on during a tournament. For many, it is the social highlight of their week, and I can see why. Parents, kids, supporters and fans of the sport are all there, and in areas like this it seems that makes up most of the people in the community. It is a time to cheer on your team, get updated on the local goings on, and for some it is a rare chance to converse with residents of other communities. A true grassroots marketplace of ideas. The grapevine in full effect. There is always an ample amount of friendly rivalry, and need I mention the draw of a home cooked burger and fries from the concession? Sports, in general, have the power to unite or divide people. They can provide a common ground for discussion, and facilitate the exploration of many of the issues facing our small communities province wide. We, as Canadians, are born sports fans. As we grow up, we make a decision whether or not to stay fans, or to distract ourselves with other endeavors, but at the end of the day, when we want to spend time with the rest of society, they can usually be found at some type of sports focused gathering. So here’s to our local sports teams, the entertainment they provide, and the excuse they give us to get together with our friends and neighbours. Just imagine how cold and lonely our winter would be without the weekend tournaments that provide us the opportunity to get out and about in the wonderful Robson Valley.

BC Hydro to clean up slash piles in Tete Jaune Dear Editor;

I

am presently writing to you to update everyone concerning the hydro slash and log piles that were left along the road sides throughout the Robson Valley. In my previous letters I conveyed not only my own concerns but the many other voices of local people whom have approached me with concerns about the refuse that has been left behind these last few years after Hydro cleared their right of ways. For those reading the letters you know that I have been in contact with the acting community relations manager and the community relations spokesperson for B.C. Hydro. Both were helpful in getting the ball rolling and have indicated they would like to see a completion to the entire clean up endeavour. I have recently had the pleasure of meeting with the Hydro vegetation specialist and he outlined the approach that Hydro is taking to implement a program that would move forward with clearing the piles of wood. They are looking for ways to allocate funding to bring smaller community projects on board that would benefit the people of the Valley. As I mentioned before, the Tete Jaune Community Forest is on board with this project and is moving forward with burning the slash piles in the Tete Jaune area. A project is also being developed with the Ministry of Transportation to look after some of the logs. The vegetation specialist explained some of the comJoshua Estabrooks

plexities of the politics of Hydro’s position compared to Forestry’s position and the restrictions put upon both of them by the government. A great many issues were not able to have been properly addressed and it has created a big mess. For me personally it seems as though Hydro is interested in moving forward with clearing the wasted wood but there may not be a quick and sweeping solution in the works. I am not privy to knowing what the end result will be as far as taking care of the entire Robson Valley area but I can say with certainty Hydro is starting to sweep up the mess in the Tete Jaune area. Notes from All Over Parent & Tots Skating in McBride and Valemount Why not take the kids out skating for the afternoon? Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, excluding the holidays, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Canoe Valley Recreation Centre in Valemount and the Robson Valley Recreation Centre in McBride, parents skate for free and the cost for each child is only $1.65. Rental skates are available upon request at $1.30 a pair, but parents are encouraged to bring their own helmets. CMH Hosts Avalanche Awareness Night in McBride CMH employees and local Valemount girls, Tara Boyda and Kim Shaw had a lot of fun at Avalanche Awareness Night in McBride, saying it was a better turn out than last year. “Short but informative,” said Boyda, it was located downstairs of the Giggling Grizzly Pub. There were booths, info talks, and prizes. The talks were geared to all back country users, encouraging them to be aware of their surroundings, what and what not to do, and covered how to use a beacon. There were photos provided by the Valemount lodge, of different scenarios, as well as demos of some of the new equipment out there, including ABS bags, and the snow pulse. Drinking and Driving Counterattack It’s not your imagination the streets really are alive with police cars! December means the Drinking Driving Counterattack is now officially underway. Prince George RCMP Sergeant, Pat McTiernan, said, “We’re not telling people not to go out and enjoy themselves. We just want to make sure that if they decide to over indulge and get behind the wheel, if we stop them and they blow over the ‘warn’ level, we are going to take their car for three, seven or thirty days.” He also said they plan to provide support to the communities of McBride and Valemount, “So just because there is a small detachment, that doesn’t mean there won’t be plenty of Counterattack activity.”

Sledders Annoyed at the Lack of Public Transportation in Valemount A number of this year’s snowmobilers are publically annoyed, taking it out on local establishments, that there is a serious lack of public transportation in this town. The need for a Taxi Service is especially evident now that the new .05 Drinking and Driving laws are in effect, making it nearly impossible to go out and enjoy a drink with your dinner if you are returning to anywhere outside of town limits. Dance, Dance, Dunster, Dunster Family Dances! The first Saturday of every month is Dunster Family Dance night at the Dunster Community Hall, from 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm. The evening includes dance instruction, a Potluck and snacks! Kids twelve and under can enjoy the evening for free, and for those twelve and older it only costs $5.00, or $10 for the entire family. You can call Pete at 250-968-4334 for more information. Corb Lund Band to Play Two Nights in Jasper Everybody’s favourite Hurtin’ Albertan, Corb Lund, is set to play in Jasper next weekend, December 12th and 13th. Local quilts bring joy to Siyabonga village in Uganda

here is a small group of children in Uganda that are extremely excited to visit the Robson Valley. The Siyabonga Village is a collective vision of local sustainability. According to McBride resident, Irene Froese, Barbara Kayaga, the founder of the Village got the idea after seeing a similar model working in Rwanda, and decided to try to create something in Uganda along the same lines. “They now have three acres to grow food on for Siyabonga. The goal is to some day purchase 50 acres of land.” The 20 children that reside there now, will eventually have homes for their families, said Froese, and the property would include garden spaces, places to learn and teach trades to the surrounding community, a medical center to teach all aspects of health, a school, feed store, produce store, and a guest house for people who come to help and for group retreats. “There will be several venues to fuel the community, the trade products its residents learn to make will be sold, the guest house income and many aspects of farming.” To get the community off the ground, generosity is needed, she said. And it is the generosity of residents of the Robson Valley that has already made a huge difference in the lives of the children. The Contagious Generosity started in North America by people sponsoring African Children’s Choir kids over 20 years ago, they in turn are giving 24/7 in Uganda, with the Robson Valley’s generous support of sponsorship and one time giving. Definitely, said Froese, this giving will influence 20 families, and those 20 families, touched by the generosity ‘bug’ will generously give to their fellow man/ women. “We’re wanting this to grow to be self supporting, yet keep it small enough to be manageable.”

Froese said that, “When the African Children’s Choir came and performed in McBride, it was a full house, and per capita our little town gave more than any of the big cities. This Valley knows the joy of giving, it is a wonderful community to be a part of.” Froese and her husband travelled to Uganda in July. They carried with them 10 - 50 pound suitcases full of donated items and hand made quilts for the children. “We brought over 40 hand made quilts and afghans. The kids laughed and danced as they received their quilt as well as a collection of necessities. “ As well, each child received a picture of who made the quilt, and their sponsor, which was the first time they met them. “Each child sent back letters of gratitude and joy to their sponsors, as well as a picture of them with their quilt.” The quilts were such prized items; Froese said she could not find them the next day. “They were on their beds, but they were wrapped up in their towels to keep them clean.” Some of the sponsors had never made a quilt before, while others worked together as a team. The oldest sewer was 84; the youngest was 5, she said. The good news for both the children of Siyabonga and the residents of the Robson Valley is they will most likely have a chance to meet face to face soon, as there are plans in the works to bring the children over to North America to perform and fundraise for their growing village. “They are talking about using McBride as their base camp. If the funding is in place, we may see them this summer or fall.” The Froeses would like to encourage anyone who is interested in contributing to the vision of Siyabonga either with money or goods, or to physically travel to help with construction in years to come, to contact her at 250-569-2561. All money collected is directed through Compassion Works International, which is a non-profit, non-denominational Canadian charity. Stay tuned next week for more on the Froese’s visit to Uganda, as well as how you can catch up with Jordan and his family at 1:00 p.m. on the 19th at the E- Free Church. They will have African goods to sell there: proceeds for Siyabonga. Yes they are coming for a visit! Siybonga children overjoyed with their new hats and shirts.

and took home the US Mountain Stage NewSong Contest (NPR). Brooks’ music is also featured on Neil Young’s Livingwithwartoday website and he recently won both the coveted Kerrville New Folk Competition in Texas, a special spring round of the International Songwriting Competition (out of 15,000 entries), and placed as a Finalist in the Music2Life Contest (run by ‘Paul’ of ‘Peter, Paul & Mary’ fame). All this might not have happened prior to 2006. In fact, upon his return from a 1997 trek throughout war ruined Bosnia-Herzegovina, Brooks quit writing songs and performing, claiming, “I’m at least a 1,000 books and emotions shy of earning the right to stand behind a microphone.” Eight years of musical silence later, and at the suggestion of one of his Canadian literary heroes, Austin Clarke - Brooks wiped the dust off his Taylor Jumbo 615... there’s been no stopping him since! Though Brooks’ music is filled with grey and morally ambiguous characters living on the outskirts of approval,

his mandate is unequivocal. “I’m not interested in ‘happy songs’ – I’ve chosen to write healing songs and, for that reason, I’m obliged to reveal a wound or two now and then. I’m even less interested in writing unhappy songs: I want to write hopeful songs, inspiring songs and I expect I owe today’s listener some hopeful argument – some legitimate reason - as to why we should believe our present world could be improved, or healed. The highest aim of song is to invoke empathy - to offer that rare sight of ourselves in others. In this sense, the folk singer is simply trying to politicize love, hence, my contention that today’s songwriter should be a lobbyist for compassion to be our principle representative in government office.” The show will begin at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, December 10. Tickets cost $25.00 in advance, or $30.00 at the door. Tickets can be purchased locally at Stedmans, or by calling 250-5690165. To check out Brooks’ music go to www.myspace.com/jonbrooks.

An action packed evening took place at the Best Western recently, when Ducks Unlimited were in town to host their annual fundraising dinner and auction. A record setting 98 people attended the event, which raised $17,720.00 (before expenses) for the organization. “This was the best year ever,” said local Chairperson, Elsie Buck. “We deeply thank everyone for their attendance and their support over the years.” The event received donations from all over the province, said Buck, who is joined on the local committee by delegates Erik Buck, Lillian Basaraba, Walter Matwee, Sandra Andrews, Christine Latimer, Susan Gehrig and Christy Balle.

Horoscopes ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Take a few steps into the unknown, Aries. It can be good to try a few things that are different and not in your comfort zone. You’ll get encouragement from friends.

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, choose the more difficult path instead of the easy way out when faced with an important decision this week. The payoff will be much greater in the end.

GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, there are a lot of tasks on your agenda this week, but you only have two hands. Therefore, don’t try to do everything at the same time; otherwise nothing will be finished.

CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, rethink your opinion of someone at work. While you may not have gotten along thus far, there is a chance for a change of heart on the horizon.

LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, romance is in the air this week if you make time for it. Put aside other responsibilities and spend some time wining and dining a loved one. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, nostalgia reigns supreme when you bump into someone from your past. Enjoy the trip down Memory Lane and all the fond times the trip brings to mind. LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 When someone turns to you for advice, Libra, you may want to pass on saying much. Right now you really can’t count on your decision-making skills. Wait a bit longer. SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, it has been a waiting game for you for quite some time now and you’re not one for patience. Keep your head up because things are looking like they will go your way.

LAST WEEKS ANSWERS

Sagittarius, a funny thing will happen to you this week, although at the time you may not find much humor in it. Be a good sport and go along with the course of events.

CAPRICORN- Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, a difference of opinion can quickly escalate into a war of words if you’re not careful. Keep mum when others seem to be goading you into an argument. AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, you are called on to be the voice of reason, but it may not be the role you were looking for this week. Relish in the idea that others look to you for support. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, projects pile up and it is time to delegate some of this work. Trust a close friend with the task of helping out.
