Best BBQ Chicken This sauce has just the right balance of tangy sweetness and heat. Try it on ribs as well as chicken. 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 2 cans (15 ounces each) tomato sauce 1 cup red wine vinegar 1/2 cup light molasses 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce 1/3 cup packed brown sugar 3/4 teaspoon ground red pepper (cayenne) 2 chickens (3 1/2 pounds each), cut into quarters, skin removed if you like 1. In 10-inch skillet, heat oil over medium heat until hot. Add onion and cook about 10 minutes or until tender and golden, stirring occasionally. Stir in tomato sauce, vinegar, molasses, Worcestershire, sugar and ground red pepper; heat to boiling over high heat. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook, uncovered, 45 minutes or until sauce thickens slightly. If not using sauce right away, cover and refrigerate for up to 2 weeks. 2. Reserve 1 1/2 cups sauce to serve with grilled chicken. Place chicken quarters on grill over medium heat; cook 20 to 25 minutes, turning over once. Generously brush chicken with some of the remaining barbecue sauce; cook 20 minutes longer, turning pieces often and brushing with sauce frequently, until juices run clear when chicken is pierced with tip of knife. Serve with reserved sauce. Makes 8 servings. • Each serving with skin: About 500 calories, 23g total fat (6g saturated), 42g protein, 34g carbohydrate, 2g fiber, 158mg cholesterol, 755mg sodium. • Each serving without skin: About 395 calories, 13g total fat (3g saturated), 39g protein, 34g carbohydrate, 2g fiber, 114mg cholesterol, 750mg sodium. All Asphalt Needs Jackie H., Owner How long do you think it will be before we don’t have to physically mow our lawn anymore? Tractors are navigated by GPS now. All you need to do is turn them around at the end of the field. Vacuum cleaner companies have figured out how to vacuum the room without you. All you have to do is set it and forget it. I am thinking it’s almost time for the lawn mower to be obsolete. This is one invention I would pay a pretty cost to own. I actually don’t mind vacuuming the house, but a lawn mower that runs without me I would love to purchase! My favorite new invention right now is “Hey Siri� on my iphone. I can be driving along and say “Hey Siri� and she will help me with whatever I need. Finding a location, reading to me my new text messages, or most anything I ask her to do. I don’t have to touch my phone or look away from the road. It’s a handy tool. Another new thing on my iphone 7 I just love is the dual lens camera. The camera on that phone is so incredible I can’t imagine much need to ever carry another camera again. The only thing it’s missing is a large zoom lens. Don’t Keep Secrets From Your Doctor DEAR DR. ROACH: About three years ago, I was walking from the parking lot to church (not a long distance) and was overcome with a feeling of warmth and weakness throughout my body. I almost dropped my purse, but it stopped almost immediately. About three weeks ago, the same thing happened. I did not feel ill, and it passed almost as fast as it came on. I am 65 years old, exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet. I have yearly checkups and blood tests. After looking over my yearly bloodwork, which we do at work, my white blood cell count is usually low, according to my hematologist. He had me do a total body X-ray and several blood tests over a threemonth period and found nothing wrong with me. I did not mention the above to him. Can you tell me what can possibly be going on in my body? — A.N. ANSWER: Since it has happened only twice in three years, and since you have had an evaluation without finding anything, it may just be one of those things that happens that we don’t get an answer to. In fact, I think that is the most likely outcome. However, whenever I hear about warmth all over the body, I worry about conditions that cause a release of substances that act on the blood vessels. Carcinoid syndrome and pheochromocytomas are two rare conditions that can cause a temporary flushing sensation, and you certainly should mention this to your doctor.

Neither of them is likely, but you don’t want to miss either possibility. Sudden onset of weakness is a warning sign of a TIA or stroke, but your situation doesn’t really sound like that. Still, giving your doctor the most information will help him decide whether this needs to be looked into further. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 80 years old, and have been bothered by frequent urination for many years. My urologist was constantly recommending a surgical procedure, and was performing diagnostic tests to determine what I already knew — that I do not void fully. I sometimes must urinate three to four times at night. I have not seen this urologist for more than two years. My question is: What are the risks of doing nothing? I was on Flomax and found it to be of no benefit. — W.B. ANSWER: Difficulty urinating is a common problem for older men, and for many men, the symptoms themselves make them want to be treated. It sounds like you are asking if there might be additional downsides besides the symptoms. The major risk is that there might be a cancer, especially of the prostate, so seeing the urologist to look for cancer is important. Prolonged blockage occasionally leads to kidney damage, if the blockage is severe enough for long enough. Finally, having “stale” urine in the bladder predisposes you to infection. If your doctor finds you have good kidney function, no cancer and no infection, you don’t need to get treated. Rattlesnakes Aren’t Only Danger Dogs Face DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We’re planning a road trip out West this summer to several national parks, and our two dogs are coming along. We’ve done all our research on which parks allow pets and have everything planned out. But I’m worried about the dogs while we’re out hiking, especially that they might be bitten by rattlesnakes. I heard there’s a snakebite vaccine available. Should I give it to them before we go? — Betsy J., Madison, Wisconsin DEAR BETSY: Snakebite vaccine is really expensive — $800 or more — and not covered by pet insurance. And it doesn’t mean they’re out of danger if they are bitten. Heat, jagged terrain and ticks are much bigger hazards than snakes. While there’s no guarantee that accident or injury won’t happen, you can drastically improve the odds in your favor by observing just a few guidelines. • Follow park service rules for pets: Dogs must be on a leash at all times. • Check the bulletin board at park entry points or ranger stations for the latest on health and safety hazards in the park. Better yet, ask a ranger directly. • Make sure your dogs’ vaccinations are up to date before starting your trip. • Carry a pet first-aid kit. • Every evening and morning, check the dogs for ticks. Lyme disease is not as big a problem out West, but ticks there carry plenty of other scary diseases. • Check paws frequently for cuts, scrapes and bruises. • Don’t leave your dogs in hot vehicles, even for a few minutes. • Be prepared to alter your plans if conditions change or a hiking route looks too dangerous.
