Get Your Car Ready for Fall and Winter! Autumn leaves present driving hazards LLC
Fall is the picture-perfect time of year when many drivers take to the road to view the autumn colors. The leaves are beautiful to see, but when wet or in piles on the roads, they present driving hazards unique to the season. The Car Care Council reminds drivers to prepare for fall driving conditions by having their vehicles’ tires, brakes and wipers checked before heading out on the road. “Drivers should be aware that wet leaves on the road surface can make stopping difficult, and piles of leaves can obscure potholes, curbs and street markings,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Add to these hazards the fact that road conditions can change from ideal to miserable in a matter of minutes, and what you have is a potentially dangerous situation. ”

Tires can affect the car’s ride, handling, traction and safety, and are a critical connection between the car and the road in all types of driving conditions. To maximize tire life and safety, check the inflation pressure and the tread depth, and inspect the sidewalls for cracks or punctures. As a general rule, tires should be rotated every 6,000 miles and balanced. The brake system is the car’s most important safety system. Brakes are a normal wear item for any car, and brake linings, drums and rotors, as well as brake fluid, should be checked at each oil change. To help ensure the performance and safety of wipers, blades should be replaced every six months or when cracked, cut, torn, streaking or chattering. Windshield wiper fluid should be checked monthly and only washer fluid should be used.

Happy Fall! Time to think about your coolant
It’s the beginning of fall, and time to consider your coolant. This is a good time to think about your engine cooling system. Regular inspections and pressure tests of your cooling system are of utmost importance, as is good maintenance by following the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended coolant change intervals. As time passes, the protective anti-corrosive additives in the antifreeze break down and lose their effectiveness. But antifreeze has two other very important jobs as well: • It is used to decrease the temperature at which the coolant freezes. • It is used to raise the temperature at which the coolant will begin to boil. It is also very important that the proper ratio of water to antifreeze is always maintained. Unless specified otherwise by the vehicle manufacturer, the coolant in most vehicles should consist of a mixture of 50% water and 50% antifreeze before being added to the cooling system. This 50/50 solution not only prevents freezing, but also preserves proper cooling properties. Also concerning the antifreeze to water mixture ratio: adding more antifreeze to the mix (once again, unless otherwise specified by the vehicle manufacturer) to increase its percentage in the mixture is not better. Generally speaking, after the ratio exceeds more than about 65% antifreeze to 35% water, freeze protection can actually diminish, but even worse, heat dissipation can radically decrease, since the water is the primary substance used for this purpose. Antifreeze itself actually has fairly poor heat transfer characteristics. Having too much antifreeze in the mixture can actually cause engine overheating. When having your mobile A/C system professionally serviced, insist on proper repair procedures and quality replacement parts. Insist on recovery and recycling so that refrigerant can be reused and not released into the atmosphere. Get Your Car Ready for Fall and Winter!
Fall into a vehicle maintenance program October is Fall Car Care Month, the perfect time to fall into a vehicle maintenance program and get your car ready for the challenges of harsh winter weather. “A thorough inspection of your vehicle during Fall Car Care Month will go a long way toward ensuring safety and dependability when temperatures drop and severe winter weather strikes,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “A routine maintenance program also makes financial sense, extending useful vehicle life and helping avoid costly repairs down the road.” Whether you do it yourself or take your car to a professional service technician, the Car Care Council recommends 10 basic maintenance procedures to keep your vehicle operating at its best: 1. Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering, brake and transmission as well as windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant.

2. Check the hoses and belts to make sure they are not cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or showing signs of excessive wear. 3. Check the battery and replace if necessary. Make sure the connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free. 4. Check the brake system annually and have the brake linings, rotors and drums inspected at each oil change. 5. Inspect the exhaust system for leaks, damage and broken supports or hangers if there is an unusual noise. Exhaust leaks can be dangerous and must be corrected without delay. 6. Schedule a tune-up to help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy and produce the lowest level of emissions. 7. Check the heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) system as proper heating and cooling performance is critical for interior comfort and for safety reasons such as defrosting. 8. Inspect the steering and suspension system annually including shock absorbers, struts and chassis parts such as ball joints, tie rod ends and other related components. 9. Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots. 10. Check the wipers and lighting so that you can see and be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting

Does your car sound haunted?
Halloween is the time of year for squeals, squeaks, screeches and things that go bump in the night, but when these eerie and haunted sounds come from your car, it’s time for maintenance. Noise is to the vehicle what pain is to the body: a warning. According to the Car Care Council, the following strange and scary noises are clues that trouble is brewing within your car and that it should be checked out by an automotive repair technician. Squeal: A sharp noise that usually means a problem with the brakes or the power steering, fan or air conditioning belt. The entire brake system should be checked every year,

Ghouls and goblins make Halloween driving spooky For motorists, the spooky part about Halloween is that little ghouls and goblins often dress in dark colors and in costumes that cover their eyes, and some get so excited they simply forget road safety rules. To help keep trick-or-treaters as safe as possible, the Car Care Council reminds motorists to drive slowly, especially through neighborhoods, to be extra careful when entering or exiting driveways or alleyways, and make sure the vehicle’s brakes and lights work properly. Symptoms of brake problems are: the car pulls to one side during braking, the brake pedal pulsates when applying the brakes, the brake pedal feels “mushy,” there is a noise when stepping on the brake pedal, and the master cylinder repeatedly needs brake fluid. The brake system is the most critical safety system on a vehicle and any problems should be checked out immediately. Brakes are a normal wear item and eventually need replacement. Drivers should also check that all lights on the car are working.
This year, the end of Daylight Saving Time is November 2nd, which means that many trick-or-treaters will be out at dusk. Driving at dusk is difficult because although the sky is still bright, objects on the road can merge with shadows and fade into darkness. While drivers can do their part to keep children safe on Halloween, adults should remind trick-or-treaters to get out of cars on the curb side and not the traffic side, to stop at all corners and to use crosswalks. Children should look left, right and left again before crossing, stay on sidewalks, avoid crossing through yards and wear bright, reflective and flame retardant clothing. “Motorists should take a few precautionary steps before Halloween to make sure brakes and lights are working properly. Plus, they should drive slowly and carefully. This combination will go a long way toward keeping trick-or-treaters safe,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council.

tire condition and inflation pressure every three months or 3,000 miles, and have the tires rotated and balanced. Clang: Gears will make a “clanging” noise when there is excessive “lash” (movement generally describes as “play”). It’s the kind of noise that accompanies one component being allowed to move because of excessive play and the abrupt halt it comes to when encountering the resistance of the part that didn’t move when it was supposed to. Metallic ticking: Also often associated with excessive play in valve train components. “These are just some of the many noises a vehicle makes when there’s a problem, but whenever there’s an unusual sound, it’s a good idea to have the car looked at to ensure safety and reliability and to help prevent costly repairs down the road,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. including brake linings, rotors and drums. Belts should be inspected every three months or 3,000/5,000 miles. Screech: A sound typically caused by brake wear indicators that tell you it’s time for maintenance. Brakes are a normal wear item for any car and eventually they’re going to need to be replaced for both performance and safety reasons. Squeaks: A number of things can cause squeaks, including belts, the water pump or alternator bearings or a pulley. Belts should be replaced when cracked, frayed, glazed or showing signs of excessive wear. And water pumps, tensioners, idlers and alternators all have bearings that can fail and “squeak,” all of which should be checked. Bang: A backfire, which can be caused by lean air/fuel ratio, an ignition malfunction and/or a mechanical failure. Grinding (a metal-on-metal grating noise): A sound that is related to the brake linings. The brake system is your car’s most important safety system and needed repairs should never be put off. Heavy knock: A pounding sound that is usually connecting rod or main bearing failures which are caused by excessive wear. Thump: A sound that usually means there’s a problem with the tires. To maximize tire life and safety, check

In return, participants volunteer to teach horticultural information to the public based on university research and recommendations. Participants meet weekly on Thursday evenings in Mifflinburg from 6-9pm, from October 3rd to March 3rd (with breaks for academic and religious holidays). Penn State Professors, Extension Educators, and Master Gardeners present on specific topics, including vegetable gardening, native plants, grass and lawn care, fruit trees and much more. The fee for the Penn State Extension Master Gardener Basic Training is $200, and includes a copy of the award-winning Penn State Master Gardener Manual. “I came into this class knowing a fair amount about gardening, especially native plants and organic vegetable gardening, so I thought this would be a refresher course for me. Not only did I learn new things about topics I thought I knew well, but I also learned about horticultural areas of interest I had yet to explore. We began
the course with a solid plant biology lesson, which was the framework for the remainder of our studies. I especially enjoyed the classes on fruit trees, ornamental plants/landscaping, and indoor plants. Besides the classroom knowledge, I encountered a wide network of professional educators and learned of many online and print resources.” says Jen Schneidman Partica, Master Gardener Apprentice from the 2018-19 Penn State Extension Master Gardener Basic Training Course. I have had cheap hearing aids. I had very expensive hearing aids. I was never happy. I love my new hearing aids because I do not have to worry about batteries, and I know they are not going to quit on me. it has opened up a whole new world for me. The television volume went down. Everything is so clear. It’s been a really great experience at Artisan Hearing Technologies. - Patricia Wetzel
Vote for Our Float October 19 in the South Williamsport Mummers Parade!
I had a hearing problem, but I would not admit it. The family was always after me to get a hearing test. I heard about Artisan Hearing Technologies and I thought I would try it. I drove past the office a few times before I finally stopped in and had a hearing test. I had hearing loss. No pressure from Jennifer Burget, but I decided to take a hearing aid out on a 2 week trial. I was very surprised at what I was hearing, no more repeating myself, no more huh. The TV volume went down. I love the app for my smart phone, it’s great! If you want the best hearing aids and service I recommend Jennifer at Artisan Hearing Technologies. - John McDermott

Fall 1991 and January 1992 Testimonials: My cousin and his new wife (both in their early 40’s) were visiting my mom, my sister, and I. My sister asks, “So, how did you meet?” They kind of giggled and asked each other, “Should we tell them?” They said they met through the LYBL column. My sister and I decided we would try our fare at meeting “Mr. Right”. (BTW, my cousin and his wife are still married and hopelessly in love.) My sister didn’t have much luck, but in January 1992, I saw this ad that kept drawing my attention. As described, he really wasn’t what I was looking for, but... We met later that month for the first time; got engaged in 1993 and married in 1994.
