The Essential National Curb Appeal Month Checklist for Homeowners 1. Raise the roof. Work your way from top to bottom of your house, taking into consideration that the roof is one of the most prominent features of your home exterior. If it’s time to replace your roof, be sure you’re investing in a product that’s impact- and fire-resistant, as well as resistant to fading, rotting, cracks and insects. The good news is that you don’t need to compromise beauty to get this level of long-term durability. To capture the authentic look of real cedar shake while getting the highperformance benefits of composite materials, consider upgrading with the Select Shake composite tiles from DaVinci Roofscapes, which come in 11 color blends for a finished multi-width look. The brand also offers a Lifetime Limited Warranty, giving you peace of mind. 2. Beautify the entry door. Upgrading your entry door handle is like icing a cake: it adds a special finishing touch to your home and makes a great first impression. Step up your style with Delaney Hardware’s premium Bravura designer collection. Made of solid forged brass, the pieces in this line provide timeless sophistication and craftsmanship that can’t be duplicated. Available in a variety of styles, from an elegant farmhouse design to a sleek modern handleset, you can customize your hardware Continued page 5

(StatePoint) Whether you want to boost the value of your home to put it on the market or you want to enhance its beauty and settle in for long-term living, it’s important to keep curb appeal top of mind. That’s because first impressions count.

Indeed, curb appeal accounts for up to 7% of home value, according to research conducted at the University of Texas at Arlington. It’s also the first thing people see when they visit your home, whether those folks are prospective home buyers or friends and family. During National Curb Appeal Month this August, let this checklist be your guide to beautifying your home’s exterior:

My sister and I decided we would try our fare at meeting “Mr. Right”. (BTW, my cousin and his wife are still married and hopelessly in love.) National Study Shows What Homeowners Really Want From Their Roofs

VALLEY AUCTIONS Research) and the 2021 Roof Purchasing Study, results show: • A strong growth in homeowners valuing the curb appeal of their personal properties in the past decade (78% viewing it as “extremely” or “very important” in 2011 as compared to 88% with similar feelings in 2021). • An increase in homeowners seeing their home exterior as a reflection of their personality (71% in 2011; 85% in 2021). • While durability remains the biggest influencer of a roofing purchase, the secondmost popular influencer has changed dramatically. In 2011, longevity was the second response. In 2021, that has changed to pricing, up from the number eight position 10 years ago. • Severe weather damage remains the number one reason for replacing a roof. However, is 2011, 65% said severe weather would prompt a new roof purchase (with 9% reporting current roof damage from a weather-related event), compared to 57% in 2021 (with 32% reporting a currently damaged roof from severe weather). • While 23% of homeowners reported replacing their roof due to old age in 2011, 44% (almost double) said old age was the reason to replace a roof in the 2021 study. • Color preference has remained consistent. Black is still the most popular roof color, followed by gray, brown and beige/tan. For more roofing insights, visit davinciroofscapes.com. Bottom line? Review your policy annually and make changes or additions as needed. • Update documents: Regularly revisit and update documents, particularly if you have significant changes in your life, such as marriage, death or the birth of a child. • Start saving: If you’re able, start saving today. VALLEY HO homeowners. But industry experts say there are some persistent myths that keep many people from getting it. Myth #1. My car insurance policy will cover me for anything bad that happens. Reality: A tragic car accident that causes life-changing injuries could result in the need for care that costs far more than your car insurance policy’s limits, and you could be on the hook to make up the difference. Myth #2. My homeowners policy will pay if someone gets hurt on my property. Reality: Homeowners insurance may

pay up to the limits of your policy, but similar to a car accident, if someone suffers a catastrophic accident on your property, the costs could exceed your policy limits. Umbrella insurance also protects against lawsuits for other things unrelated to injuries. For example, if you write a social media post that’s construed as damaging to someone’s reputation, or if you sit on a nonprofit board or coach a youth sports team and someone brings legal action against you. Ask your insurance agent about the wide range of scenarios that may pertain to you. Myth #3.

I won’t get sued – that only happens to people with a lot of money. Reality: The truth is that in today’s litigious society, anyone can be sued, and if you are responsible for someone’s injuries that exceed the limits of your other insurance policies, or if you are sued for other reasons, your house and other financial assets could be at risk. Myth #4. Umbrella insurance is expensive. Reality: You might be surprised to learn how much coverage you can buy for a modest cost. For example, Erie Insurance says most of its customers can buy an extra $1 million in coverage for less than $20 a month. When it comes to protecting your family’s financial future, some things are a given, like car, home and life insurance, but it pays to look beyond the obvious. The best thing to do is talk with your insurance agent to make sure you have the right coverages. Chances are you’ll decide that umbrella insurance is a coverage you can’t afford not to have. *****

wealth of care instructions and guides online outlining recommended watering schedules and other necessary considerations. For busy plant parents or those looking to build collections in their office spaces, low-maintenance plants are the way to go. If your space is short on windows, seek out adaptable low-light plants that thrive outside of direct sunlight, such as ivy or spider plants. Don’t Forget Furry Friends If you’re already a pet parent too, don’t worry! Many houseplants won’t pose any threats to the fur babies in your home. Top pet-friendly houseplants include Curly Spiders, Baby Rubber Plants, Echeveria, Gasteria,

Haworthia, Peperomia, Nerve Plants, Fluffy Ruffles Ferns, Rabbit’s Foot Ferns and Staghorn Ferns. When in doubt, foliage and succulents brand Wild Interiors helps potential plant and current pet parents by offering a handy online guide and paw print icons indicating pet-friendly options. Not-So-Green Thumb Finally, as you embark on your plant parenthood journey, avoid common houseplant mistakes. When it comes to indoor plant care, many problems stem from loving and caring for your plants too much! Overwatering, over fertilizing and over adjusting the plant’s location or pot situation can all do more harm than good, despite your best intentions. Also keep in mind that many plants require less care and attention during fall and winter months. Ready to test your green thumb and take the leap into plant parenthood? Visit wildinteriors.com to explore more plant care tips and keep an eye out for its collection of succulent and foliage plants at a retailer near you. And if you ever find yourself wondering if you need another plant, just remember: plants are self-care!
