WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO
The Village Business Institute (VBI) works with employers to address the issues that affect their employees. Our unique team of professionals improves individual and organizational performance through business and organizational solutions. Solutions include an employee assistance program, coaching, organization development and strategic planning, workplace mediation, human resource consultation, crisis management services, leadership and employee training, career transition and outplacement services, and specialized services.
HISTORY
The Village Family Service Center started The Village Employee Assistance Program (EAP) in 1972. It quickly became evident that our knowledge in human relations and organizational dynamics proved useful to clients. Client demand for those services resulted in the creation of The Village Business Institute (VBI) in 1994. At that time, VBI became the umbrella for The Village EAP, and began offering fullscale management consultation services that continue today. VBI’s professional consultants are experienced and knowledgeable about employment regulations, human resources, management, and productivity.

Established in 1972, VBI’s Employee Assistance Program is a collection of worksite-based services that help employers and their employees be more productive and satisfied on the job. Today, VBI’s Employee Assistance Program serves hundreds of companies and thousands of employees throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, and internationally, continuing to make it easier to get help when an employee needs it.
WHAT IS EAP? Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) serve organizations and their employees in multiple ways, ranging from consultation at the strategic level about issues with organization-wide implications to individual assistance to employees and family members experiencing personal difficulties. As workplace programs, the structure and operation of each EAP varies with the structure, functioning and needs of the organization(s) it serves. In general, an EAP is a set of professional services specifically designed: • to improve and/or maintain the productivity and healthy functioning of the workplace and to address a work organization’s particular business needs • through the application of specialized knowledge and expertise about human behavior and mental health. More specifically, an EAP is a workplace program designed to assist: 1) work organizations in addressing productivity issues, and 2) “employee clients” in identifying and resolving personal concerns, including health, marital, family, financial, alcohol, drug, legal, emotional, stress or other personal issues that may affect job performance. Internal Survey Results
ASK YOURSELF THESE QUESTIONS WHEN CHOOSING AN EAP: • Does the EAP have a local presence, participating in benefit fairs and performing benefit orientations? • Does the EAP have other clients in our industry? • Does the EAP offer multiple types of training options? (Access to these services can greatly enhance wellness.) • Does the financial counseling offer help, tools and a plan toward financial health, or is it just a consultation and referral to an outside source? • How can the provider assist us in communicating benefits to employees? (If employees get used to contacting the EAP for financial and legal problems or wellness topics and have a good experience, they may feel more comfortable contacting them during more difficult times in their lives.)
• What level education do counselors have? Are they licensed in the state they practice? • Do intake personnel work for the EAP provider or are they outsourced? • Are counselors available 24/7? • What type of assistance is available if we have a critical incident? • Does the provider offer counseling and referrals only, or also manager training on how to spot an employee in crisis? Is such training included in the package? • Does the provider offer one toll-free phone number to access all of the services available? • Will we have a dedicated account representative whom we can call with questions? • Does the EAP provide reporting on a regular basis? (Regular reporting allows HR/benefit professionals to look for trends in calls and add training or wellness programming based on those trends.)

CRISIS
M A N AG E M E N T S E RV I C E S Crises can come in many forms, including accidental death, worksite injury, natural disasters, terrorism, and crime. Organizations can enhance their ability to survive crises and stay in business by implementing a comprehensive crisis management plan. The Village Business Institute’s team of Crisis Management Planning and Response professionals will assist in limiting the negative impact of a crisis.
PLANNING FOR CRISIS
TRAUMA: ACCIDENTS, LIFE THREATENING INJURIES, & DEATH IN THE WORKPLACE
Prior to a crisis, VBI consultants will assist in establishing a well-coordinated crisis response plan. VBI offers a range of crisis services including: • Risk assessment • Preparation of crisis management plans including policies, manuals, and checklists • Consultation on the management of crisis communications
Work-related traumatic incidents directly impact the physical safety and emotional well-being of employees. Trauma in the workplace is not only a threat to organizational productivity, but it can also negatively impact employee perceptions of their own relationship with the organization. The Village Business Institute offers intervention for workplace trauma by utilizing a defined model of trauma response known as Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM). The CISM model offers specific individual, group, and organizational interventions designed to provide timely assessment, information, and support during crucial moments in the life of an organization. Counselors trained in CISM intervention are able to facilitate a process for the group or individual intended to reduce the impacts of trauma and stress upon employees and management within the organization.
ADVERSE INCIDENTS, GRIEF, & STRESS IN THE WORKPLACE
Difficult or adverse incidents in the workplace impact employees and their performance. Even events and accidents that occur outside the workplace can negatively influence performance and morale when employees are affected by those events. Employers can respond to these incidents by providing their employees with timely support by The Village Business Institute. Village counselors and affiliates are experienced in responding to adverse incidents that can have a very human impact upon an organization’s employees. Counselors are available to provide employees (and management) with an on-site opportunity to process their experience and learn to recognize their own stress or grief response. Prompt intervention and information regarding stress response, stress management, and grief can help reduce negative impacts and preserve employee engagement.
CRISIS MANAGEMENT BRIEFING
Crisis management briefing is an intervention effective in the wake of community-wide or organizational crises. The goal of a briefing is to provide information about the nature of the crisis and the organizational response, present information about common reactions to crises, and promote personal coping and self-care strategies that may mitigate stress reactions. A briefing is an efficient large-group crisis intervention and may be delivered any time following a crisis.

Today’s organizations face greater challenges than ever before.
