Building a new life in 2020

CeDAR is part of the University of Colorado Hospital, and considered the most qualified facility to treat addiction-related medical and psychological conditions SUBMITTED BY CeDAR

CeDAR, the Center for Addiction, Dependency and Rehabilitation is Colorado’s premier residential and outpatient treatment center for substance abuse. As part of the University of Colorado Hospital, they’re considered the most qualified facility to treat addiction-related medical and psychological conditions. They offer addiction treat-

ment programs for people 18 years and older. CeDAR’s mission is not to only help people conquer addiction but to improve their quality of life by helping them build a solid foundation for long-term sobriety. CeDAR programs are designed for every level of drug and alcohol treatment including 10-Day Medically Supervised Withdrawal and Assess-

ment Program, 30-Day Intensive Residential Treatment, 60 to 90-Day Residential Extended Care, Professionals Program, Intensive Outpatient Programs, Recovery Management, and Family Program. Susan Dearing-Bond, CeDAR’s Executive Director says, “Addiction treatment isn’t one-size-fits-all. From day-one in detox to longterm coaching, we offer a full

range of treatment options so that anyone at any time can get the care that matches their stage of recovery.” Quitting prolonged use of drugs and alcohol can create serious medical conditions like heart problems, seizures, and even death. CeDAR’s Medically Supervised Withdrawal and Assessment Program (SWAP) is designed to ensure safety when stopping

the use of substances including opioids, alcohol, benzodiazepines and other drugs. Residential treatment at CeDAR offers an inpatient environment where people can focus exclusively on recovery. “I am thrilled to have The Villager Newspaper recognize our Community Development Director Jeremy Hanak as a 2019-2020 Rising Star. His dedicated work both within the Village and externally with regional officials and organizations has been a tremendous asset to our community. As someone who has observed Jeremy work with residents and experts to solve problems, I can attest to his vast knowledge, willingness to listen, ability to solve problems and impeccable follow through. Jeremy Hanak is truly a Rising Star.”

BY FREDA MIKLIN GOVERNMENTAL REPORTER

eremy Hanak has been chosen as the winner of the 2019 Villager Newspaper’s Rising Star Award. He was selected for this honor in recognition of the dedication to excellence in public service that earned him two huge promotions in the past two years. Hanak is now GV’s director of its public works department, which is responsible for all the city’s roads and pavement, including ongoing maintenance, traffic management systems, snow-removal, and all related capital improvement projects. It is responsible for 255 vehicles and pieces of equipment utilized daily by GV employees, including the city’s fleet of police cars. The public works department handles 4,500 service requests annually. It has 44 full-time staff members and an annual budget of $8.7 million. In 2019, they oversaw most of the city’s $26 million capital projects budget. Hanak came to GV in March 2008 as the city’s senior project manager for transportation after working as a consulting traffic engineer for eight years on multiple projects, including solving traffic and transportation problems for the cities of Pueblo, Grand Junction, Evans, and Greeley. Said Hanak, “I learned a lot as a consultant, but I realized I didn’t want to jump from project to project, only focused on how much the next job would pay my firm. I wanted to use my skills to solve problems by seeing them

through from beginning to end. I wanted to focus on how what I did could improve people’s lives. That’s what drew me to city government.” In recognition of his performance, Hanak was promoted to the number two position in the department in July 2017. Ten months later he was named Public Works Director. A few short months after coming to GV, Hanak created a five-year plan to take Greenwood Village to the frontline of traffic management. It was designed to start in 2009 and be completed in 2013. The total cost of the entire fiveyear project was $1 million. Hanak noticed that the city already had traffic cameras at many locations. He proposed adding them to every intersection that didn’t have them, which was done by 2010, along with installing countdown pedestrian signals so that people crossing the street knew when the light would change. In 2011 and 2012, his plan had ethernet switches added so all traffic devices in the city could be managed. Also added was a “conflict monitoring” function and communications from the traffic system to city personnel, who soon received emails and text messages on their phones when a traffic signal was not functioning properly. In 2013, the final step, making the system “traffic adaptive” was completed. With this feature, the timing of the traffic signals changes every cycle, depending on how many cars are waiting to go in each direction. This all-important function automatically adapts to regular events like attendance at church services on Sunday mornings that see large numbers of peo-

ple come and go at the same time. It was used in the development of GV’s unique traffic-signal system used to flush up to 18,000 concertgoers out of the Fiddler’s Green area when concerts end, reported as being done in as little as 18 minutes by former GV police commander Eric Schmitt. In October 2018, the City of Centennial announced that it was going to add this “innovative technology to improve traffic,” in coordination with Greenwood Village and Lone Tree to improve traffic across city lines on Yosemite Street. Jeremy Hanak was an “Air Force brat.” Born in Houston, he lived in Tennessee, Rhode Island, Austin, TX, Germany, and England, before settling in Lafayette, CO where he finished high school. After playing on both sides of the ball as defensive end and tight end on the football team there, Hanak turned down offers from Stanford (he says his father still hasn’t gotten over it) and Wisconsin to attend the University of Kansas in Lawrence. He played defensive end on the KU football team for five years while earning a degree in civil engineering after abandoning his pursuit of medicine because “it didn’t offer the chance to directly solve problems like engineering did.” During college he interned in the traffic engineering department of the City of Lawrence and discovered his calling. Jeremy and Carrie Hanak are the parents of Hope, 17, Tyler, 11, and Chase, 8.The Villager salutes 2019 Rising Star Jeremy Hanak for his dedication to public service and ongoing contribution to the public good. Fmiklin.villager@gmail.com

“My sincere congratulations to Jeremy Hanak for his selection as a Rising Star by The Villager newspaper. Jeremy, during his entire tenure in Greenwood Village Public Works, always demonstrates a commitment to work above and beyond normal expectations. An event last year involving Jeremy, the Greenwood Village Police Department (GVPD), and me brings to mind his demonstrated commitment to the city on a late Sunday afternoon. While on a ride-along with a GVPD Sergeant, dispatch reported an incident of a car on University Boulevard which crashed into a city wall. Upon arrival, the Sergeant determined the car had penetrated several feet into the wall. There was a strong concern that if the car was removed the wall would collapse onto the street. The GVPD Sergeant requested support from public works to evaluate the situation. Not surprisingly, Jeremy arrived on the scene accompanied by his wife Carrie, a professional registered civil engineer. She evaluated the situation and declared removal of the car to be a safe procedure. She was correct. Carrie and Jeremy were en route to dinner at a nearby restaurant but instead diverted to the accident scene. In a similar situation, supervisors in other cities may not have been as aggressive as Jeremy was. We have many individuals who work for Greenwood Village that on a regular basis act above and beyond like Jeremy. The nugget of this story is Jeremy’s support of the city, even includes drafting his wife into action on behalf of the city! Again, congratulations Jeremy, the recognition of you could not more deserved. – Ron Rakowsky Former Mayor, City of Greenwood Village

State Sen. Jack Tate wants to reform the RTD before he moves on BY FREDA MIKLIN GOVERNMENTAL REPORTER

Jack Tate decided late in 2018 that he would not run for re-election to the state senate in Nov. 2020, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t important to him to make a positive difference in Coloradans’ lives as long as he is in a position to do so. One subject he is serious about addressing in the 2020 legislative session that began on January 4 is the Regional Transportation District (RTD). Says Tate, “I support public transportation. Right now, RTD is at a critical point where its financial health and sustainability is in question and its ability to provide transit services to those who need it the most is in jeopardy. It’s our job in the legislature to provide oversight and support,

and as a problem solver I want to be part of this solution to help RTD regain the public trust needed for future success.”

Facing challenges including a shortage of drivers and lack of ridership, the RTD board has announced it is considering cutting back services. Tate thinks there is a better answer. He wants to “increase oversight of the RTD by the legislature and the public, to identify measures to ensure its long-term fiscal health, and to increase transparency and accountability through reforms that will benefit the public interest.” The RTD was established by the General Assembly as a political subdivision of the state in 1969. It began with 21 appointed members, including ten from the City and County of Denver and two at-large who were appointed by the other 19. In 1980, a ballot initiative was approved by the voters changing it to a 15-person board, all elected from individual director districts, beginning in 1983. A

subsequent effort in 1998 to return it to an appointed board failed. The general argument for an appointed board is that it allows individuals with expertise in specific areas to be placed in positions of responsibility for those fields. The argument for an elected board is that it provides accountability to the voters. Tate does not seek to eliminate the elected board. He wants to add specific expertise to it by making the (elected) state treasurer and the (appointed) director of the state department of transportation ex-officio board members who would participate fully in the deliberations of the RTD board, except that they would not be compensated and their votes, though recorded, would be non-binding. He also wants to add two additional directors who would be appointed by the governor “to advocate for disadvantaged communities.”

The senator believes that those with fewer resources and those with disabilities have fewer options if public transportation is not available, so it is important that their needs be considered. Tate believes the state treasurer can recommend the institution of fiscal reforms to address various areas, including the RTD’s unfunded pension liability for its hourly workers (listed as $241 million in RTD’s 12-31-18 financial statements) and determine if there are potential savings in the organization’s administration budget that might allow better pay to be offered for drivers. He believes that higher pay would increase RTD’s ability to hire and retain drivers, who are currently required to work six-day weeks with limited breaks to keep the busses and trains going. Iran could be on thin ice The Middle East is boiling over with religious intolerance, civil strife, killing of Christians and hatred of the United States. America interests after 18 years of warfare, billions of dollars and worst of all the death of thousands of American soldiers we now have the enemy at our sovereign embassy gates in Bagdad, a city that we supposedly liberated from Saddam Hussein’s oppressive regime. Their government wants American military forces out of Iraq but allows the now dead Iranian general to move freely around the country. How ironic that Saddam was waging war against the Iranians. He would have never allowed an Iranian militant in his country. We can’t cry over spilt milk, and in this case American blood. The root of the crisis is, and always has been the state of Israel that we have supported since the state’s founding on May 14, 1948 when David Ben Gurion pro-

Hard working retailers were back to work Thursday and shoppers were returning gifts and snapping up sale items. It was reported that 130 million people traveled over the holiday period and thank heaven the local weather held and we didn’t have thousands of people stranded at DEN airport. We did get snow in the high country and the ski season is reported to be very successful and ongoing. The Rocky Mountain snowfall is reported to be above normal in every area of the state, so no drought worries for Colorado this summer. This is the first week that we return to normal workdays and it’s good to get back into the news week routine and actually know what day it is. America is committed to our Christian/ Judeo relationships and remembering at this time of the year that Jesus Christ was born a Jew 2020 years ago last week. The Jews have suffered in the Middle East throughout history. Now comes President Donald Trump who has done more for Israel than any president in history. He has given them lasting assurance that we will defend the Jewish state at any cost. We know that he has moved the capital from Telavi to Jerusalem. A brave move that all other U.S. presidents sought to do, but never did. Israel, under the leadership of prime minister Netanyahu has been our staunchest ally

Iran vows to destroy Israel and now chants “Death to the United States.” Now they are back freely building their nuclear weapons with killing Americans and eliminating Israel as their mission in life. A number of Middle East countries, such as the UAE detest Iran and have ongoing island boundary disputes with the Iranians. The religious divide between Sunnis and Shias continues with tribal hatred over divine Muslim leadership roots. We can debate whether America should have ever entered these Middle East conflicts under any circumstances, but the genie is out of the bottle. We have now reached a new era of armed conflict with Iran. They have a limited navy and air force, but a well-trained army ground force. They can target our aircraft with Russian made missile defense systems, but

Sure, enough the team was named the “Titans.” A month later I received a team autographed football from him. Nashville built him the new stadium and the team has moved upward. we can bomb them from the air and sea, never putting a boot on their soil. We can destroy Tehran and their oil fields tomorrow. No doubt we would suffer some casualties of planes and pilots. Iranians are willing to die for their hatred and may very soon. How wide the conflict may grow is anyone’s guess, but we can believe that neither Russia nor China will intervene on their behalf. The U.S. Congress might be the greatest obstacle to an Iran incursion. Iran could be headed towards prosperity after the bombs and missiles clear the air and free the masses from an oppressive government. It was once the vast Persian empire. Maybe diplomacy and common sense will stall the conflict, but the hatred and evil intentions of Iran’s present leaders will continue onward to unknown destruction unless stopped soon. Will they destroy Israel with nuclear weapons? President Trump may stop them now!

Dismantling the safety net

Over 40.1 million Americans live in poverty, nearly one third are children. In spite of the growing economy, 1 in 6 Americans rely on some form of government-funded food assistance. These programs include food stamps, Meals on Wheels, Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), free and reduced school lunches and other programs. These food assistance programs help subsidize nutritional food for infants, children, the elderly and families living in poverty.

Also saw Cherry Hills councilmember Al Blum having lunch, and Terry Considine at a distance. A good place for a power lunch and great luncheon specials. I wanted the two men to meet as both are world travelers and understand the Middle East. With the latest killing of the Iranian General Qasem Soleimani near the Bagdad airport we enter 2020 with another International incident. Hammurabi’s credo is “An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.” It will be interesting to see what the Iranians do to even the score and, in my opinion, it will not be against property, but spilling more American blood somewhere in the world. President Trump means business and if they retaliate to “save face” they will surely suffer the president’s wrath. low-income families off these benefits. Many of these families are the working poor and are very dependent on these programs to feed their families. Arapahoe County administers federal welfare programs including nutritional programs for low-income households in the county. Currently, Arapahoe County has over 19,000 individuals and families receiving SNAP nutritional food assistance. If these proposed cuts are implemented nearly six thousand people would be terminated from Arapahoe County food assistance program. The SNAP program,

as many of the other federal assistance programs, require able-bodied individuals to either attend job development programs or find work to be eligible for these benefits. These programs help low-income families find work to improve their income and eventually get off this food program, to become tax paying earners. By cutting off the working poor from subsided nutritional programs their children’s health is in jeopardy. Today, many Americans are only one paycheck away from not meeting their basic living expenses. The federal nutritional programs are designed to help families with a temporary safety

net that gives these families help until they can work their way back to become contributing members of society. By significantly cutting these programs that protect the health of the children of low-income families, help kept the elderly in these homes and provide a safety net when families are in need of help, we will only increase the medical costs, increase homelessness and adversely affect the health of those service by these programs. RTD – The ride to nowhere? Denver’s RTD, or Regional Transportation District, meets public transit needs by providing “safe, clean, reliable, courteous, accessible, and cost-effective service” throughout metro Denver, according to its website. How are they doing? On New Year’s Eve they fell short. They were to provide free bus and light rail rides that evening through the next morning. Two of my adult children took advantage and ventured into Denver to celebrate the first hours of 2020. Getting home from Union Station, however, after midnight was not so easy as no trains appeared for over an hour. Free rides are great for late night New Year’s revelers, so they aren’t tempted to drive under the influence of alcohol. But what happens when the ride home doesn’t appear? Sure, there is Uber or other ride-sharing services, but surge pricing on New Year’s Eve can push prices to well over $100 for a ride from downtown to the suburbs. That was the choice dictated to many when the free RTD ride never showed up. I’ve not seen any media reports over the trains to no-

where that evening, but there have been reports of the “train to the plane” delays. RTD notes a driver shortage, difficulty finding and retaining train and bus drivers. The driver shortage is real, as reported by The Denver Channel. One morning this past BY BRIAN C. November, “At JOONDEPH least 37 train trips were canceled on six different lines before 6 a.m.” Yet job applicants don’t receive replies from RTD. As one applicant said, “I applied some time ago. Clean background, clean (motor vehicle record.) They never called. They can blame themselves.” Exacerbating the problem is that ridership is on pace to fall for the fifth year in a row. Fewer riders means less revenue for equipment maintenance, leaving more riders stranded when they need a ride, turning back to their cars to get around. When a quasi-government entity runs into mismanagement or financial problems, their knee-jerk reaction is not to solve the problem, but instead grow the bureaucracy in the whimsical hope that more oversight will fix things. State Senator Jack Tate proposed legislation to in-

crease the 15-member RTD board by two seats, allowing the governor to appoint two more directors. If 15 board members can’t fix this, why would adding two more provide the magic cure for RTD’s maladies? Many large American cities have functional and reliable mass transit systems. Perhaps instead of increasing the size of the RTD board, they could shrink the board and hire one or two people from another city transit system who could rescue Denver’s RTD from its death spiral of unreliable service, declining ridership, decreasing revenue, further diminishing the service and ridership, and so on. A strong economy with low gasoline prices is a further incentive for commuters to drive rather than hop on a bus or train, but that is beyond RTD’s control. Still they need to provide a service that consumers are willing to pay for and use. Until then, Denver’s RTD will continue to struggle. internal medicine physicians, specialized addiction psychiatrists, addiction case managers, behavioral health doctors, family therapists, spiritual care professionals, certified addiction nurses, and other qualified specialists. “Our credentialed, multidisciplinary team is what sets CeDAR apart from a typical rehab. This is hospital-level care.” CeDAR offers a specific treatment program for licensed professionals including doctors, lawyers, pilots, and others whose license becomes jeopardized by drug and alcohol use. Residential treatment significantly increases a professional’s

chance to achieve lasting recovery, and maintain their profession. Issues related to stigma, accountability, and return-to-work planning are incorporated into an individualized treatment plan. Outpatient programs at CeDAR are for those transitioning from residential treatment, or for anyone needing ongoing support for long-term recovery. CeDAR’s Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is best known for teaching essential early recovery concepts, skill-building, addiction and recovery education, relapse prevention, mental health care and family engagement. Continuing structured recovery in tandem with normal life functions has shown to be vital for achieving long-

term sobriety. “Practical limitations can be obstacles to residential treatment. We get that. It doesn’t mean there are no other options, though. We help people fit outpatient treatment into their daily lives.” Recovery Management is the most recent innovation at CeDAR and includes Recovery Coaching. This service is specifically designed to continue sobriety in everyday life. Research evidence shows that the longer a person stays connected to recovery-oriented environments, the better chance they have for maintaining sobriety. Recovery coaches are peers in recovery who provide not only guidance, but also act as role models for successful recovery from addiction.

Since addiction is a disease that affects the entire family, CeDAR has a Family Program to provide education and support for any family members who have a loved one struggling with substance abuse. Family members can learn about the science of addiction, principles of recovery, and the complex struggle with co-dependency, enabling and boundaries. Most importantly, they find out how to take care of themselves. “This one of the most vital services offered at CeDAR. Multiple family members can be affected by one person’s addiction. We want families to get the help they need, just like their addicted loved one.” There are so many ways for CeDAR to help anyone

Coffee and conversation with State Sen. Jeff Bridges BY FREDA MIKLIN GOVERNMENTAL REPORTER

Villager publisher Bob Sweeney and I sat down with district 26 State Sen. Jeff Bridges at the Early Bird Café in the Landmark in Greenwood Village to talk about his goals and vision for the 2020 legislative session just begun. Bridges explained that unlike Washington, D.C., the Colorado legislature is “not so partisan.” In fact, he told us, “96 percent of the bills passed in 2019 were approved on a bipartisan basis.” Since that means, technically, that the bills that were approved by the Democrat-controlled legislature had at least one Republican vote, we pressed Bridges for more information. He said, “Two-thirds of the bills that were approved were supported by at least half the Republicans in the legislature.” That, by any definition, is true bipartisanship. The senator is highly focused on education. He believes that “Every kid who is born in the United States should have a chance to live the American Dream.” On failed Referendum CC of 2019, which would have provided more money for K-12 education by retaining tax refunds resulting from legal tax collections in excess of TABOR (Taxpayer Bill of Rights) limits, Bridges said, “It wasn’t specific enough. If people knew exactly how money was being spent and were certain that there was a way to guarantee that the money goes where it’s supposed to go, they

might say yes to a proposal to retain TABOR tax refunds.” On the question of TABOR as a continuing policy in Colorado, Bridges believes it is here to stay. “The ability to vote on tax increases is something Coloradans will never give up,” he stated unequivocally. Turning back to education, Bridges is very interested in concurrent enrollment that allows high school students to earn college credits at virtually no cost. He said that presently, “Anyone in high school can

take a class at any community college, including online.” He would like to see “every student who is capable of doing so graduate high school with a two-year college associate’s degree completed.” Bridges believes something will pass this year’s state legislature on the subject of paid family leave, but there are multiple proposals that will need to be sorted out. He also thinks that action will be taken on prescription drug prices, noting that the 2019 legislature capped the price of insulin at

$100/month. The senator has been working with others to revise the all-important and highly complicated school finance formula, which was written in the 1980’s. He thinks a draft of a revised formula for school funding may not be ready for consideration until 2021. Sweeney asked Bridges if he was surprised that the referendum to build a new Arapahoe County Jail to replace the current one, which is in terrible condition, failed. Bridges said, “Until the conversation

about a referendum to increase taxes for a new jail began, I’d never heard anything about the current one being in poor condition.” Frequently, he said, Colorado voters have to be asked a question more than once before they say yes. Bridges said “the market is driving the change to renewable energy” when we asked about what will happen to cities like Craig, Sweeney’s home town, whose economy is based on coal production. The senator said there are ways for the state to help with job retraining, pointing to the work being done in Pueblo by Excel in that area. We asked the senator about the possibility of true sales tax simplification in Colorado, since the legislature can only make rules for statutory cities (there are 12) and towns in the state. Home rule cities (there are 61, including Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs, Fort Collins, Pueblo, Arvada, Aurora, Centennial, Greenwood Village, Cherry Hills Village, Englewood, and Littleton) contain two-thirds of the state’s population. Answered Bridges, “We need to create a system for sales tax collection by the state that home rule cities will want to participate in.” Jeff Bridges was first elected state representative for HD3 in Nov. 2016. He served for two years and had just been re-elected to the House when he was appointed to fill the remaining term of Sen. Daniel Kagan, who resigned and retired from state senate district 26 in Jan. 2019. Bridges is up for re-election in Nov. 2020. Fmiklin.villager@gmail. com

“There you are,” the power of emotional intelligence aving a house-full of guests during the holiday season, I was amused and delighted by the interaction among siblings, cousins, friends, in-laws, grandparents, grandchildren and neighbors. Multiple generations were interacting,

baking together, dining together and playing games. Personality differences were on full display. Some were the life of the party being loud, funny and directing the conversations. Others were reserved, great listeners and encouragers. Still others were bossy and

competitive. I thought about emotional intelligence as I watched and enjoyed my guests interact with one another. What is emotional intelligence? According to the expert, Daniel Goldman Ph.D., emotional intelligence consists of five characteristics which are: self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, motivation, and social skills.

Self-awareness

is the ability to recognize emotions, strengths, boundaries, feelings, behaviors and understand how these affect others. It is knowing and honoring who you are. My 88-year-old mother showcased her emotional intelligence several times during her visit. One morning she passed the mirror before put-

ting on her make-up. She was obviously not happy with how she looked. She then took the time to complete her morning routine makeup and all, came back to that same mirror and exclaimed, “There you are!” I laughed out loud. She certainly is self-aware!

Self-regulation

is characterized by the power to manage emotions, delay gratification and resist temptations. Those who have this amazing trait are intentional and proactive rather than reactive. With many houseguests having strong opinions regarding politics, I was a bit concerned about family drama. I was delighted to see self-regulation in action as cousins held their tongue and changed the subject when the conversation started to escalate.

Empathy

is the third characteristic of emotional intelligence. To be empathetic means you can identify and understand others’ emotions. This trait was on display when family members cried with one another regarding a tragic event being shared. It was emotional, raw but compassionate and encouraging to have others understand the pain of the one sharing.

is part of being emotionally intelligent because it is about knowing what lights you up. People are motivated and excited when they are doing something they love, honoring their passions and their gifts and talents. It is about dreaming big and getting to your goals even if it sometimes feels like baby steps. My nephew just graduated with an MBA. He was certainly motivated to complete his studies and finish so he could jump start his career. It was exhilarating to witness his excitement and high level of motivation.

In addition to the net income requirement, a few states also require that a senior’s assets be below $3,500, not counting their home, retirement or pension plans, income from SSI or TANF, and vehicle (this varies by state). Most states, however, have much higher asset limits or they don’t count assets at all when determining eligibility. To apply, seniors or an authorized representative will need to fill out a state application form, which can be done at the local SNAP office or, it can be mailed or faxed in. In many states it can be completed online. If eligible, benefits will be provided on a plastic card that’s used like a debit card and accepted at most grocery stores. The average SNAP benefit for 60-and-older households is around $125 per month. To learn more or apply,

Other Programs In addition to SNAP, there are other federal programs that can help low-income seniors, age 60 and older, like the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) and the Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP). The CSFP (see fns.usda. gov/csfp) is a program that provides supplemental food packages to seniors with income limits at or below the 130 percent poverty line. And the SFMNP (fns. usda.gov/sfmnp) provides seniors coupons that can be exchanged for fresh fruits and vegetables at farmers’ markets, roadside stands and community supported agriculture programs in select locations throughout the U.S. To be eligible, your aunt’s income must be below the 185 percent poverty level. They married each other’s worlds

Tiffany Mai & Brian Watson’s nuptials The glamorous wedding party Photos courtesy of Tiffany and Brian

Tiffany Mai and Brian Watson began their love story at a business meeting on Valentine’s Day, 2018. They may have married each other’s worlds, but they have much in common. They are both entrepreneurs. They are both authors. They are both creative. They both enjoy entertaining and are passionate about hosting and giving back to their community. On a perfectly gorgeous fall Colorado day in 2019, they took their wedding vows and staged a spectacular black-tie reception on the grounds of a mansion in Denver. Enhanced by the sweetest pink theme color, there was an aisle of metallic silver that glistened all the way to the outdoor altar. Inside the vast reception tent, there was nonstop entertainment including a ribbon dance, Asian tea ceremony, an abundance of buffets for dinner with varied cuisine from local purveyors and dancing. Brian made all the rounds even while suffering in pain from an injury sustained during the summer while playing tennis. Guests were in awe of the beauty, hospitality, attention to every special detail and thoughtful favors that included fans and parasols to fend off the heat of the Indian Summer temperatures. The gracious newlyweds were quick to thank everyone for love and support. Congratulations Tiffany and Brian! We look forward to sharing the exciting new ventures you create as a couple.

Newly elected council members sworn into office BY DORIS TRUHLAR GOVERNMENTAL REPORTER

The Centennial city council Monday night selected Mike Sutherland, a council member from District 3, in the middle of the city, as its mayor pro tem, after debating whether it is necessary to select someone to fill the office. At one point in the meeting, at least three different council members (Cathy Turley and Tammy Mauer, in addition to Sutherland) were nominated for the position, in which a member of council is elected from among those serving on council, to take the mayor’s place and run the council meeting or other function when the

mayor cannot be present. Councilwoman Candace Moon had suggested that the selection of the mayor pro tem should be put off “indefinitely.” City Attorney Robert Widner explained to the council that the purpose of having a mayor pro tem is to fill a “gap” when the elected mayor cannot be at a meeting or other function. Since, after discussion there was only one candidate for the position, Widner said it was not necessary for the council to vote on the issue. Sutherland, who thanked the council for the “vote of confidence,” was sworn in by the recently appointed municipal judge for the city, Louis Gresh, who also swore in the newly elected council members.

Senator Court to step down due to illness Following Diagnosis of Rare Immune-Related Condition On December 31, 2019 Senator Lois Court was hospitalized after experiencing muscle weakness and partial paralysis. Shortly thereafter, she was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome–– a rare autoimmune disorder that affects the peripheral nerves of the body. Due to the severity of the

illness, Senator Court has decided to step down, effective Jan. 16, 2020. Although it is a serious diagnosis, 99% of people who are diagnosed recover, with 98% returning to full functionality within several weeks or months. Senator Court has served the people of Colorado faithfully for over 12 years, first as an aide to State Representative Andy Kerr, then as a State Representative herself

for House District 6, and finally as a State Senator for District 31. Sen. Court has led the Senate chamber most recently as their elected President Pro-Tempore, has championed gun safety legislation, and been a stalwart voice for fiscal reform. Living in the 7th Avenue Parkway Neighborhood for over 35 years, Sen. Court has been an active community member and dedicated civil

servant over the decades–– teaching American government at Red Rocks Community College and working as an aide to former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb. “It has been the honor of my life to serve the people of Colorado and I am deeply saddened that this chapter of my life is at a close. But I am excited by the work my colleagues are undertaking and will continue to cheer them

on and be an active citizen of Senate District 31,” said Senator Lois Court (D-Denver). “I would also like to thank all of my wonderful supporters and constituents––I could have never achieved what I did without your unfailing passion and guidance.” With Senator Court’s departure, the Senate District 31 Committee will convene and begin their process to appoint her replacement.

About the National Western Stock Show

A powerful woman vs a woman in power BY KATHY TURLEY CENTENNIAL CITY COUNCIL MEMBER

Which one are you? Let’s explore, shall we? Since the beginning of time women have had an exceptional gift of influence, leadership and compassion. Born with an innate, intuitive sense and a nurturing spirit has afforded them opportunities for self determination as well as leading the way for cultural change. Women have the unique advantage of accessing a graceful and thoughtful demeanor when advancing an issue or idea forward. Many women, like Harriett Tubman and Margaret Thatcher have been and are today social change agents whether in their community or in their home mentoring their daughters and grand daugh-

ters. While acknowledging those historical women, it’s only been in the last 50 years that we’ve seen the advancement of women in powerful positions. Whether from oppression, societies dictates or personal passion, history has laid a path for women to excel and be “the women that they were meant to be.” The woman in power. How does she get there? How does she navigate the systems and networks to reach her goal? How does she win the race? How does she treat others? How does she maintain her God given principles and core values? How does she treat others? Is she ego driven, blinded from kindness, patience, peace and dignity? The woman in power.

A powerful woman. A powerful woman has no need for ego or proof. Her validation is confidence, elegant stature and many “thank you’s” along the way. Grace surrounds her, exudes from her and engages those on her journey. Her agenda is pure with integrity and substance with the sole purpose for a greater cause. A powerful woman! Like the caterpillar who climbs the mountain, kicking off others along the path only to find that by dropping off and becoming a butterfly is true liberation and personal power. Ideally, a woman SHOULD cross over both spectrums. We are at a place in history where we CAN! Woman, Wise & Whole – Which one are you?

A Convergence of Colorado style, culture and tradition PHOTOS AND STORY BY STEFAN KRUSZE.

As evening fell ending a spring like day on what was presumably the first day of winter on December the 21st, the 64th Denver Debutante Ball blossomed with fashionable style and celebration. The annual ball and celebration at the Brown Palace Hotel and Spa marks the end of the year’s social events calendar and ushers in time honored traditions and celebrations that span generations. This year’s celebration included special moments when a few grandparents greeted and received their granddaughters making their debut, when Madeleine Hunt was warmly welcomed by her Grandparents Philip and Nancy Anschutz and Alexandra Mayer was welcomed by her Grandmother Jan Mayer in the receiving line. With the many special moments of families and friends coming together to celebrate and welcome many accomplished young women, the 64th Denver Debutante Ball continues time honored traditions that parallel other Grand Continental Celebrations world wide.

2020 Lexus GS350 F-Sport has V8 power BY H. THROTTLE AUTOMOTIVE COLUMNIST

The 2020 Lexus GS350 was parked out in front of a local bistro and a passing lady commented on how impressive the “Ultrasonic blue mica” sedan looked. “Nice car” she said. This is a special Lexus sedan that is pretty to look at and impressive to drive. Exceptional quality comes at a price and this all-wheel drive has a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $54,505. A lengthy list of options such as the Mark Levinson premium surround system with 17 speakers adds $1380, illuminated door sills $425. Customers have a plethora of luxury options to choose from on this vehicle. This test model had them all including the latest safety features such as the Lexus Safety System and Smart Stop Technology. There’s no shortage of these cut-

ting-edge safety features and one of the best reasons to purchase a late model car. This GS350 boasts a V8 engine with 311 horsepower without needing any turbo assistance for fast acceleration. The tuned exhaust system purrs when the engine RPM’s rise. The transmission matches the powerful engine with 8-speeds with steering wheel power shift paddles. The vehicle offers three power selection modes of Eco, Normal and Sport. Naturally the economy mode adds to the mileage which is really good for this larger sedan and V8 engine averaging 21 mpg. The Toyota/Lexus transmissions are just the best with sequential drive selection and the ease of paddle shifting. So easy to move the gear range up or down in mountain driving and exit ramp speeds. The engine, transmission,

safety features, elegant interior and blue Mica paint just make this an impressive allwheel drive sedan. The 12’ plus navigation screen has dynamic voice command. The easy dials control radio volumes and channel changes. The F Sport features add to the passion and performance of this GS350. This package adds 18” split-five spoke alloy wheels with all-season tires, a 16-way adjustable driver’s seat, leather steering wheel, a unique front fascia, grille and a rear lip spoiler. The F Sport features just add to the fine performance of this special vehicle made by Toyota in Aichi, Japan. This is a fine line of cars and this GS350 has the beauty of a custom sedan and the performance of a sports car. Like Lexus mission statement says, “Experience Amazing.”

Fiat 500X has sports car performance BY H. THROTTLE AUTOMOTIVE COLUMNIST

Brenna McLain, DDS

Professional apnea specialist who can put you to sleep

BY BOB SWEENEY PUBLISHER

outside of St. Louis, MO. Following her residency, she was assigned to work at the Pentagon dental clinic in Washington D.C. She spent over four years caring for the nation’s highest-ranking military personnel including working in the White House and teaching sleep dentistry to countless dental residents and peers at Walter Reed Hospital. In addition to her dental practice, she has become a leading specialist in sleep apnea treatment. According to the American Academy of Sleep medicine it is estimated that 26 percent of adults between 30 and 70 years of age have obstructive sleep apnea with more than 85 percent undiagnosed. Dr. McLain relates that the average life span of an untreated sleep apnea patient can be 20 years shorter than healthy individuals. Suffers have a dramatic increased risk of pre term heart attack or stroke. Because the oral appliance is custom fit to the patient and does not require a mask or power, there is often greater ease of use and better patient comfort and tolerance compared to the CPAP machine. In her practice she works directly with the patient’s physician for proper screening, referrals, and diagnosis with home sleep testing or polysomnography. If you currently snore and think you may have a problem, or you are struggling with your CPAP machine, help is out there and Dr. McLain would be happy to talk to you today.

Ditch the mask, cut the cord, let Dr. McLain make you a custom appliance and start sleeping better today!

There is a new sleep apnea specialist in town and her name is Dr. Brenna McLain, a professional dentist associated with Village Dental and Steven Zervas DDS. In addition to being a talented cosmetic and surgical dentist she is passionate about treating patients with snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. In her practice she uses oral appliances as an alternative to the CPAP machine to help sleep sufferers live longer and lead healthier lives. By taking extensive continuing education courses and treating several hundred patients, Dr. McLain recently earned Diplomate credentialing from the Academy of Clinical Sleep Disorders Disciplines which is a title held by fewer than 300 dentists internationally. She is also a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry and a member of several professional societies including the American Dental Association, the Academy of Clinical Sleep Disorders Disciplines and the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. This talented new area resident was born in Prescott, AZ and developed a passion for dentistry at a very young age while helping at her parents’ dental practice. She graduated from the University of Arizona Summa Cum Laude in 2008, earning a bachelor’s degree in physiology and chemistry and accepted the prestigious Health Professions Scholarship through the Air Force to attend dental school at the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine graduating in 2013. After graduation she continued her dental education and military career with a one year advanced eduction in general dentistry residency at Scott Air Force Base

Dr. Brenna offers a no cost consultation at Village Dental. Her phone number is 303-220-7662.
