Al Bisterfeldt was blind. He was not handsome. He was short tempered, abrasive, impatient, totally politically incorrect, however, he was loved by many. I had a manufacturing company, Sterling Stainless Tube, that made stainless steel tubing for hypodermic needles. Al was referred to our company by the Colorado Department of Rehabilitation for the Blind to seek employment with the company. The year was 1962 and it was the beginning of a new direction in medicine since the discovery that reusable needles were responsible for spreading infectious hepatitis and the solution was to not reuse the needle. As a result there was a great demand for tubing since hepatitis was becoming an epidemic. The decision was made to hire Al

to work on the production line. In spike of being blind, Al had an amazing mechanical ability. After seeing his capability he was promoted to foreman on the night shift. That was alright with Al, obviously. Last week when I talked to him on the phone I knew that the end was near. His son, Don, was staying with him and helping with the phone and answer the door. I said, “ I will call or come by and check you out Al.” Al said, “ I told you three times that I cannot get to the phone and I cannot get to the door.” He could be abrasive. Al was right however. He did not want patronizing, he just wanted me to be there. It reminds me of scripture. To paraphrase Isaiah, “don’t give me incense, or words, but give me your heart.” Al knew your heart and as a

blind man he had that special sensitivity that many blind people have. ‘He had no sight but he had vision.’” That is a quote from the great Helen Keller. As a foreman he was able to rent a small house next to the company and he came to work faithfully for over twenty five years. He was able to very successfully upset employees working on his shift, however, he never lost their respect and he was an asset to the company. I was informed yesterday that Al passed away peacefully. We will miss him. He taught us a lesson about overcoming difficult problems and facing reality with optimism. After knowing Al and his physically troubled life his friends can honestly say that he was a blessing an an inspiration to all who really knew him. Al Died on April 8, 2019. A Memorial Service was held April 14 at Olinger Chapel.

Cherry Creek Schools Board President resigns after using racial slur BY FREDA MIKLIN GOVERNMENTAL REPORTER

Former Cherry Creek (CCSD) school board president Dave Willman inexplicably used the term “tar baby” when speaking to a room full of teachers, community members, and district personnel at an awards banquet on Tuesday, April 30. While the term has a technically different meaning, it has been viewed as a racial slur targeting African-Americans for over a century. Although Willman did not repeat the term in subsequent messages, it was confirmed by Abbe Smith, CCSD executive director of communications as having been used in a story Willman told about a teacher from his childhood whose name contained the word Tar. A CCSD teacher who was in the room heard the same thing. Willman, who has served on the board for eight years, would have ended his time there in November due to being term-limited. Instead his tenure concluded abruptly last week. A letter of apology issued the day after the banquet said, “I will do what it takes to repair the damage I have caused and to work toward an inclusive culture that values and respects all.” Apparently, that was insufficient because it was followed two days later by his resignation, which was effective immediately. In a May 3 letter to district staff and the community, Superintendent Scott Siegfried said, “I respect Mr. Willman’s decision and thank him for putting the best interests of our students and community first.” Pages on the school district’s web site referencing Willman have been removed as of May 5. Karen Fisher, CCSD board vice-president, said, “We appreciate Mr. Willman’s years of service and dedication and all he gave to the Cherry Creek schools.” She told us that the board will outline the next steps to fill the vacant position of director from school district C at its next regular meeting on May 13. According to the district web site, it will be held at 7:00 p.m. at Cherry Hills Village Elementary School. Fmiklin.villager@gmail.com

Arapahoe County Republicans hear from their CU Regents BY FREDA MIKLIN GOVERNMENTAL REPORTER

Two of the five Republicans on the nine-member University of Colorado Board of Regents were the guest speakers at the May 1 meeting of the Arapahoe County Republican Breakfast Club ACRBC at Maggiano’s DTC. Addressing the controversy around the candidacy of Mark Kennedy, sole finalist for CU president, Heidi Ganahl, elected in 2017 and one of two at-large regents, said, “It’s all about identity politics.” She described Kennedy as a good man with a great track record as an academic, elected official, and businessperson. District 6 Regent John Carson, a graduate of CU and its law school, described the decision to appoint a president as the most important one that regents make. Carson said that the CU presidency “is a totally non-partisan position.” He por-

trayed Kennedy as a “fully balanced candidate,” and went on to say, “He was very successful in business, serving as a CFO for several major corporations and was a 6-year congressman from Minnesota.” Carson listed Kennedy’s “extensive academic background: dean at George Washington University (Kennedy’s web site lists him as “director and professor at

GWU), taught at Johns Hopkins University, was president of the University of North Dakota.” Carson outlined the process by which Kennedy was selected as the sole finalist. He said, “The search committee included regents Ganahl a Republican and Griego (a Democrat) as well as faculty and community members. Six finalists were identified and the board of regents

interviewed each of them for two hours before unanimously selecting Mark Kennedy as the sole finalist.” John Andrews, former state senate president whose birthday it was (May 1), likened the strong challenge to Kennedy’s nomination to “1984” author George Orwell’s “Ministry of Truth.” He said, “What’s Mark Kennedy’s real sin He is a Republican. He’s a Catholic. He knows government is not God.” Balancing out the discussion, Carson shared that the board of regents was instituting a 4-year tuition freeze for incoming freshmen and has instituted concurrent enrollment allowing Colorado high school juniors and seniors to take college classes for credit during their final years in high school. The program is available through all CU’s campuses around the state and includes classes on the Constitution and civics. Fmiklin.villager@gmail.com

Nugget fans will relate to the four overtimes and finally the disappointing loss to the Trailblazers last Friday night. More games will ensue this week, but I think the Nuggets can beat the Blazers in the series. Might be wrong, would help if we could make more three-point shots. Our team does marvelously well working the ball in for two pointers, but those 3-point bombs are deadly. Sunday night they tied the series 2-2. Gov. Polis and his efforts to have a full day of kindergarten for all children. Many of the immigrants who have become citizens or are just here legally or illegally need to have these young children receive an early education. I have first-hand experience with these classroom situations where only those who can afford the afternoon classes can stay in school. The poorer families, largely Latin Americans, have to pick up their children at noon, often without a hot meal. It is difficult for these fathers and mothers to leave their jobs as maids, roofers, and construction workers to pick up their children. They belong in school with all the students regardless of race, color and economic status. The additional early education will enable these students to enter first grade on an equal level with the fulltime students. This past Wednesday morning the two Republican Regents addressed the upcoming Regent board meeting over a decision to hire Mark Kennedy scheduled for the next day. Our local Regent from Douglas County, John Carson R represents the 6th Congressional District. Regent Districts match U.S. Congressional Districts across Colorado with two At-Large positions. In my opinion, we honor these Indians by giving their names to our athletic teams as an honor for courage and bravery. These names have also come under fire from progressives who wish to rewrite history. We need to defend our culture, religions, customs, and individual freedoms. This includes waging political warfare against those who preach socialism and communism in the future for America. President Trump has stated that it will never happen under his watch and many of us must stand up and speak out for our Constitution, Bill of Rights, and defend our Electoral College voting system that is under attack right here in Colorado. for decades have held the majority vote on the CU Board of Regents but that has narrowed to a 5-4 GOP margin on the governing board. The most important decision that confronts this board is the hiring of a new president to replace outgoing Bruce Benson who is retiring July 1, 2019. Maybe Benson will run for the U.S. Senate against Senator Bennett after his very successful tenyear reign at CU. His wife Marcy once worked in the White House. Anyway, the two Regents explained how they represent Congressional districts and how political the hiring has been for a new president. They did relate that to hire Mark Kennedy as the new president he first received a unanimous Regent vote. The young woman then politely asked the man, “What’s your name”, to which he replied, “I’m Tonto, Red Feather Goldberg, but my friends all call me Bubba.” And finally there’s the story of the three sales girls who during their coffee break were considering what kind of man they’d prefer being shipwrecked with on a desert island. “I’d want a fellow who was a wonderful conversationalist,” said the first. “That would be nice,” said the second, “But I’d rather have a guy who knew how to hunt and could cook the things he caught.” The third smiled and said, “I’d settle for a good obstetrician.” Eighty years ago, the following would have been considered “incorrect” by far too many people, but today it’s more than acceptable . During the two weeks there was some worry that Glen Gallegos(R) from the Western Slope third district might change his vote, thereby starting the search all over again. At the breakfast Regent Carson said he felt good about the Thursday vote but wasn’t totally sure of the final vote outcome. Our own governmental reporter Freda Miklin was at the Anschutz Medical Center for the meeting and reports on it fully in this week’s NEWSpaper. The Republican Regents stuck together and hired the University of North Dakota President for the job on Thursday. I’ve been on that campus years ago attending a national Sigma Chi workshop. It is a lovely campus much like CU Boulder, but smaller. They’re known for their aviation programs. The Denver Post came out editorially against Kennedy, which rang rather hollow. They did scold protesters on their rude behavior, hardly fitting for higher education, but becoming more common. Friday’s Post carried a frontpage photo of the new CU President in an embrace with Regent Sharkey who obviously likes the new selection. What was the message here? Joe Biden would smile at this photo. Republicans hug too! *** In another rather shocking revelation, David Willman the president of the Cherry Creek School Dis-

vaccination, according to Vox, with only two religions possibly viewing vaccinations negatively – Christian Scientists and the Dutch Reformed Church. Islam may have concern since some vaccines contain pork-related products. Jewish law does not forbid vaccinations, even when the vaccine contains gelatin, a pork-derived ingredient. The Catholic Church supports vaccinations to protect the life and health of children. Therefore, religious prohibitions are probably not the major cause of the current measles outbreak. There is an anti-vaccine movement in the US due to fears of potential links to autism and other developmental problems in children, and this may be playing some role in the outbreak. Missing from the causes discussed in the media is illegal immigration. Among the countries sending the most refugees to the US, several are also high on the measles prevalence list, including Congo and Ukraine. Measles is also prevalent in Central America, including Venezuela, regions sending caravans of refugees to the US. Most of these refugees are not vaccinated against measles or other childhood illnesses. Once in the

US, they are dispersed, settling in sanctuary cities, including those with current measles outbreaks. It’s not difficult to connect the dots. Fortunately, only one case of measles has been reported in Colorado this year, at least as of February. Scarier than measles is Ebola. 35 percent of refugees admitted into the US are from the Congo, where there is currently an Ebola outbreak of over 1000 cases. The media and health officials are mystified, looking beyond the obvious, blaming religion and anti-vaxxers, neither of which are new phenomena. What is new is an overwhelming rise in the number of immigrants illegally crossing the Southern border. Statistics show only those apprehended, not the many more evading border agents. The establishment wings of both political parties are happy to let this continue, despite the threats to public health and national security. The irony is that those who rail against allowing unvaccinated children into their schools welcome millions of unvaccinated refugees into their country. Until more politicians besides President Trump see the problem for what it is, expect other previously rare diseases to soon become household names.

First, burdening tens of thousands of Centennial residents to satisfy the wishes of the few who are bothered by seeing an RV on someone else’s property is unnecessary. This is a prescription impacting tens of thousands to address a concern of hundreds (if that many). The majority of the RV owners I know respect their neighbors, and cause no harm to property values. Second, it would place an undue financial burden on RV owners now having to rent storage space in storage centers (e.g., $70/mo). The economy

may be better for some, but not for all. If enacted, this law would impact too many in order to satisfy the preferences of too few. Certainly, there will be other standards the city needs to consider enacting city-wide, but this isn’t one of them. At what point does the argument of “protecting property values” warrant new laws to restrict or eliminate your private property rights? Ron Phelps District 1 Candidate for Centennial City Council

Measles is a true blastfrom-the-past disease which most of us at one time had or were vaccinated for. In the mid 1950s to mid 1960s, the US saw about 4 million cases per year. Following the introduction of a measles vaccine in the early 1960s, the rate dropped to near zero. No longer only of historical interest, measles is back. 2018 was a big year with 349 confirmed cases. 2014 was worse with 667 cases and 2019 is set to shatter records with 555 cases to date as of mid-April. A thousand students at Los Angeles colleges are currently quarantined due to possible measles exposure, unable to participate in the latest social justice protests so popular among California college students. After a cluster of cases in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, the measles outbreak is being attributed to Orthodox Jews refusing vaccinations for their children. While that might be part of the answer, there are also outbreaks in Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon, neither city home to a large number of Orthodox Jews. Is religious extremism causing the rise in US measles cases? Or are there more simple explanations? Let’s start with the first question. Most religions don’t oppose

Did you know that Centennial City Council is considering a city-wide parking ban of all recreational vehicles on private property (RV, boat, snowmobile, trailer) taller than 6 feet, AND it would require parking in a side or backyard behind a 6 foot fence to limit viewing the vehicle from the front street. Centennial City Council discussed this issue in the April 8th Study Session. Both council members from District 1 support the idea. This a bad idea for two key reasons.

the CU elects Mark Kennedy President on party line vote after raucous meeting BY FREDA MIKLIN GOVERNMENTAL REPORTER

Virtually every witness who testified at the CU Board of Regents special meeting held at the Anschutz medical campus on May 2 to vote on the appointment of Mark Kennedy, the sole finalist, as the next president of the 4-campus 64,000-student University of Colorado system, did not support him. After two hours of often tense testimony the four Democrats on the board voted no and four Republicans voted yes, leaving chair Sue Sharkey, a Republican, to cast the deciding vote. Said Sharkey, “I will proudly and with strong conviction say yes.” A moment later, a student in the audience stood up and said, “ ou should be ashamed ” before leaving the room escorted. Bob Sievers, former CU regent and professor of chemistry and biochemistry, was an early speaker. He said that many questions have been raised about Kennedy and that, like physicians, regents should “First, do no harm.” Monica Edwards, who identified herself as a fulltime employee at Anschutz and a student in the school of public health, said, “I think it is abundantly clear from visits to all 4 campuses that the majority of students and staff don’t want this person.” CU Faculty Council FC Chair Joanne Addison, an English professor, said that FC does not believe that Kennedy is the right choice to lead CU and that 70 percent of FC believe he will not be able to meet the expectations of the position. She said that FC had a dialog with Kennedy focused on his 9-year record as an academician and did not find his claim of commitment to diversity and inclusion to be credible. After Kennedy was chosen by a 5 to 4 vote, Addison again addressed the regents. She said that Kennedy had promised to fully engage in shared governance. To that end, FC had two requests: 1 that a transition committee by formed with representatives from all four CU campuses, and 2 that consultants be brought in by the board of

Regent Lesley Smith said she supported the faculty, who were against Kennedy’s appointment. From left to right, CU Regents Linda Shoemaker, Glen Gallegos, Lesley Smith, Chance Hill, Vice-Chair Jack Kroll, Chair Sue Sharkey, University Counsel Patrick O’Rourke, Regents Heidi Ganahl, John Carson, and Irene Griego listen to testimony before voting on the appointment of new CU President Mark Kennedy. regents to design a method to effect shared governance. The regents did not act on Addison’s request, ending the meeting after approving Kennedy’s contract by an 8 to 1 vote. Republican regents supported Kennedy for different reasons. Glen Gallegos said, “People are passionate. This was an 8-month process CU’s $1 billion in research funds have economic impacts throughout the state. He Kennedy will bring what’s needed to bring CU into the 21st century.” Heidi Ganahl pointed out that all nine regents were unanimous in selecting Kennedy to be the sole finalist. John Carson said, “We must ask if we believe in all forms of diversity, including diversity of thought.” Chair Sue Sharkey said, “I hoped to

find a leader who had success in business, academics, and government.” She said that Kennedy didn’t intend to micro-manage the campuses and would work well with alumni and donors. Democrat Linda Shoemaker said, “The 14-day vetting process brought out professors’ academically-based opposition to Mark Kennedy and overwhelmingly negative responses to his perceived ability to lead CU deserves better..” Another Democrat, Lesley Smith reminded listeners that she had pledged to support CU’s faculty when she ran for regent. She said, “The overwhelming majority of the faculty do not want Mark Kennedy to lead this university I stand with the faculty.” Irene Griego urged the board to “consider the thousands of messages received from the university community and find a leader who can unite us.” According to the Denver Post, “Kennedy will receive $650,000 in base pay in his first year, a roughly 81 percent increase over outgoing CU President Bruce Benson, who is paid $358,500 a year. Starting in June 2020, Kennedy’s annual base salary will rise to $850,000. Kennedy earned $365,000 in base pay annually as president of the University of orth Dakota, according to the Grand Forks Daily Herald.” In 2008, popular outgoing

CU President Bruce Benson, also a Republican, was hired on a 6 to 3 party-line vote. Fmiklin.villaer@gmail.com

The Villager’s Mothers of the Year

Freda and her mother Paula

Motherly Love of Family/ Mothers of The Year

Freda Miklin and Paula Burger There is a heartwarming relationship between Freda Miklin and her mother Paula Burger. The honor begins with Paula who was a survivor of the Nazi Germany purge and certain death in a concentration camp. She escaped and lived three years in a forest, evading the Nazi’s, sleeping on the ground with partisan resistance fighters. She now resides in Denver surrounded by her loving family. Most recently she suffered a severe auto accident that has her recovering. Her family visits her daily at a care facility and she is responding to treatment with their love and prayers. In her book about her childhood experiences she dedicates her book entitled “Paula’s Window” to her parents Sarah and Wolf Koladicki. She writes, “They hold my most beautiful and painful memories. To my brother Isaac, with whom I spent three frightening years of my childhood. And to my children and grandchildren. You are the light that vanquished the darkness.” Freda and husband Dr. Jerry Miklin have resided in the Preserve in Greenwood Village for decades, building the second home in the development. She has served on countless homeowner’s committees and city planning commissions, most recently serving as a council person from her district. She and her mother are being honored, not for their public service, but for their lives of compassion and love for family members and the challenges that parents encounter. They are a talented pair with god gifted talents. Paula is a gifted artist with paintings displayed in the State Capitol. Freda has accomplished remarkable community service that is now blossoming in Villager newspaper pages. Her mother relates about her writing, “Freda has found her niche.” Freda puts family first and is always there for her husband Jerry and their five children who have been surrounded by mother love during their lives. Forgiven are the cold meals while Mom is working. We are very proud and humbled to select these two extraordinary women as our “Mothers of The Year.”

I was lucky enough to meet her when I was 15. Paula showed me how it felt to be loved and accepted. From her, I saw and felt what family was. I learned about the holidays, how to celebrate them, how to make a home. I really feel Paula, who I call Ma, helped me become the successful woman I am today.” Another family friend who is Paula’s daughters’ age said of her, “Paula’s love is like no other love. She is tender but true. She is our guardian and our guide. She will do everything and anything for those she loves.”

Adaptive gardening: tips and tools for older gardeners

Concerned Daughter

recognizes her physical limitations and doesn’t try to do too much all at once. And, when lifting heaver objects, she needs to remember to use her legs to preserve her back. BY JIM MILLER She can do this by keeping the item close to her body and squatting to keep her back as vertical as possible.

SAVVYSENIOR

Dear Savvy Senior, Can you recommend some good tools and tips for senior gardeners? My 77-year-old mother loves to work in the garden but over the past few years has been plagued by injuries.

Dear Concerned, Aches, pains and injuries are not uncommon among older gardeners. Because gardening is such a physical activity that often requires a lot of bending and stooping, squatting and kneeling, gripping and lifting, it can be extremely taxing on an aging body. Back pain and knee injuries are most common among older gardeners, along with carpal tunnel syndrome and tennis elbow. To help keep your mom injury-free this summer, here are some tips and gardening equipment ideas that can make gardening a little easier.

Warm Up

With gardening, good form is very important as well as not overdoing any one activity. A common problem is that gardeners often kneel or squat, putting extra pressure on their knees. Then, to spare their knees, they might stand and bend over for long stretches to weed, dig and plant, straining their back and spine. To help your mom protect her body, she needs to warm up before beginning. Start by stretching, focusing on the legs and lower back. And keep changing positions and activities. Don’t spend hours weeding a owerbed. After 15 minutes of weeding, she should stand up, stretch, and switch to another activity like pruning the bushes or just take a break. It’s also important that she

Container Gardening

If your mom’s backyard garden has become too much for her to handle, she should consider elevated garden beds or container

gardening – using big pots, window boxes, hanging baskets, barrels or tub planters. This is a much easier way to garden because it eliminates much of the bend and strain of gardening but still gives her the pleasure of making things grow. Trellises are another nice option that would allow her to

garden vertically instead of horizontally. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.

Laborsaving Tools

The right gardening equipment can help too. Kneeling pads can protect knees, and garden seats or stools are both back and knee savers. Lightweight garden carts can make hauling bags of mulch, dirt, plants or other heavy objects much easier. And long-handled gardening tools can help ease the strain on the back by keeping your mom in a standing upright position versus bent over. There are also ergonomic gardening tools with fatter handles and other design features that can make lawn and garden activities a little easier.

Easier Watering

The chore of carrying water or handling a heavy, awkward hose can also be difficult for older gardeners. Some helpful options include lightweight fabric hoses instead of heavy rubber hoses; soaker or drip hoses that can be snaked throughout the garden; thin coil hoses that can be used on the patio or small areas; a hose caddy and reel for easier hose transport around the yard; and a self-winding hose chest that puts the hose up automatically. There are also a variety of ergonomic watering wands that are lightweight, easy to grip, and reach those hard to-get-to plants. To find ergonomic gardening tools and the recommended watering aids, check with local retail

ABOU

THE LAW

Dear Readers, I am honored and privileged to have been asked by Bob Sweeney, Publisher of The Villager, to write a weekly column regarding legal issues and information for seniors. My goal is to provide useful information to seniors, their families and caregivers, regarding legal topics, current law and their concerns. I am a native Coloradoan and attended Thomas Jefferson High School in Denver.

I obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree and Juris Doctor Degree from the University of Denver and I have a private law practice which emphasizes elder law, estate planning, probate, guardianships and conservatorships. I am an active member of the Colorado Bar Association, including the Elder Law Section. My goal is to help elderly people better understand the laws and related legal issues that affect their lives in today’s world, to assist them regarding their rights and personal preferences regarding their care and placement, which remain regardless of their incapacities or the passage of time. Just as my law practice emphasizes elder law, this column in The Villager will be dedicated to providing plain-language information concerning legal issues, doc-

uments and topics affecting seniors and their families. In this weekly column, I will answer Call-for-Action questions from readers and you are welcome to contact me regarding your concerns. As the population ages, many elderly persons and their families are faced with a myriad of legal issues and questions. My column will include the following topics, as well as others that you may raise: 1. Financial and Medical/ Healthcare Powers of Attorney; 2. Estate Planning/Wills and Trusts (such as Revocable Living Trusts, Spendthrift Trusts, Educational Trusts, Contingent Trusts for Children/Grand-

children and Pet Trusts); 3. Advance Medical Directives (including Living Wills, CPR Directives, DNR Orders, Organ Donation, Aid in Dying and Disposition of Last Remains); 4. Types of Deeds (including General Warranty Deeds, Special Warranty Deeds, Quitclaim Deeds, Beneficiary Deeds and their legal effect and ramifications/cautions); 5. Guardianships;

E NGLEWOOD

6. Conservatorships; 7. Personal Representative and Trustee Responsibilities/What To Do When Someone Dies; 8. Mandatory Reporting of Elder Abuse or Exploitation; 9. Protection from Abuse, Identity Theft, Fraud and Telephone Scams. E very case and situation has its own unique set of facts and circumstances. C ertain estate plan documents may work for one family, but may not work for others. Thus, it is best to seek legal advice from an experienced, knowledgeable estate plan attorney, regarding the best documents and methods to achieve your goals, in each particular case. My column and the important information provided, including my responses to your que stions, is not intended to create an attorney-client relationship, or to replace the advice and services of an attorney retained for your specific needs, or of any professional, or agency. I look forward to providing topical information under the current law regarding estate planning and related elder care issues in this column. I also look forward to hearing from you regarding your que stions concerning other elder law topics or issues which may come to your mind, triggered by the information presented.

Littleton School Board hears pros and cons about Arapahoe High School BY FREDA MIKLIN GOVERNMENTAL REPORTER

An open forum to permit public comment on the climate, culture, and leadership at Arapahoe High School (AHS) was held by the LPS board of education on May 2 in response to the results contained in an anonymous survey presented to the board a month earlier. The group who circulated the survey calls themselves the Arapahoe High School Community Coalition (AHSCC), comprised of “a group of parents, educators, and alumni.” AHS has experienced a rash of terrible events in recent years, starting with the murder of senior Claire Davis by a classmate who then took his own life in 2013, followed by eight suicides and the arrest of two teachers for suspected sexual assault this year. The questions raised by AHSCC are largely around the lack of effective action taken in the aftermath of the tragedies. A report issued in 2016 about the 2013 shooting pointed out numerous instances during which school administrators failed to act on signs that pointed to the possibility of the type of horrendous event that eventually occurred. After AHSCC’s survey was presented to the school board on April 2, students, parents, and community members began to take sides publicly, most standing with current

AHS administration. Multiple students acted to protect their principal by circulating surveys of their own to “prove” that the AHSCC survey did not re ect the feelings of most students and parents. Natalie Pramenko, AHS principal, issued a 500-word open letter to the community addressing the issues raised by the survey. Speaking to the 400-person crowd who filled the auditorium, AHSCC’s Jessica Roe, AHS graduate and current parent, alleged that school leadership had failed to create and maintain a culture and climate of safety and fair treatment of all students, favoring “4.0+ students, football players, and cheerleaders, “ an arguably common occurrence at many high schools in and out of Colorado. AHSCC presented evidence it believes demonstrates the dependability of its survey data that elicited “1,169 reliable responses,” including 498 from parents and 292 from students. According to Roe, “73 percent (the slide did not specify whether that statistic applied to responses or respondents) support changes to the administration at AHS.” Following Roe’s presentation, Dr. Jack Reutzel, board president, asked Roe if she believed that multiple AHS parents and students have differing opinions about the conditions at the school and whether it was the group’s goal to have the principal removed ? Roe agreed that there were differing opinions

about the questions at issue and said her group wanted an evaluation of the principal. Robert Reichardt, board secretary, criticized the survey’s methodology and asked Roe how much money had been spent on this effort. Roe became emotional, saying she had spent a significant amount of her own money because she felt this was very important, and added, in response to the question about money, “This is why people are afraid to talk to you.” Laura Mutton spoke a short time later. She described herself as a parent who sits on the district accountability committee and financial advisory committee. Hers was a highly polished, professional power point presentation that included results from “Surveys currently used by LPS,” the Comprehensive School Climate Inventory administered to students, parents, and school personnel in 2016, 2017 and 2018, and Teaching and Learning Conditions Colorado administered to schoolbased licensed educators.” Mutton’s results were as positive as Roe’s were negative related to AHS leadership. Mutton also pointed out what she saw as significant weaknesses in Roe’s survey methods. Mutton’s presentation concluded that the surveys she cited showed a “positive or neutral school climate at AHS” and that staff supports the AHS administration. Rolf Asphaug rose to say that tragic deaths and the

arrest of two teachers are “serious issues that need to be addressed in a serious, professional way, not with social media and a witch hunt,” citing a quote from AHSCC’s attorney, Jessica Peck, calling for the resignation of the AHS principal. He went on, “Fourteen hundred real people have signed their name to a petition supporting AHS staff.” The other speakers were mostly students who came to demonstrate sincere support for their principal, largely due to interactions they and their peers had had with her during which they felt she heard, understood, and cared about them. Senior Maggie Coan ad-

dressed the board, saying, “None of you and none of us were ever trained to deal with the types of things that we’ve had to deal with at AHS.” The mood in the room lightened up when LPS board president asked Coan, “It has been reported that the hallways at AHS are chaos. Is that true?” Coan thought for a moment, then said, “I don’t think the freshmen know how to walk.” Having heard the public comments expressed at the meeting on May 2, it is expected that the LPS board will address the issues raised at its next regular board meeting on May 9. Fmiklin.villager@gmail.com LPS board members Kelly Perez, Robert Reichardt, Superintendent Brian Ewert, President Jack Reutzel, Jim Stephens, and Carrie WarrenGuily listened to speakers and asked pointed questions.

Over 400 people came to listen to the speakers discuss the climate, culture, and leadership of AHS.

SERVICES

the drive and ride is the dial transmission with two-speeds mounted on the dash. The drive mode seems to work for all occasions and is easy to operate, however this driver would prefer a different sequential transmission with shift mode gear choices. The larger engine is a real boost for this hybrid with some hybrids having smaller engines and less power. Hybrids have been known to have trouble in deep snow with the battery power not strong enough to move enough to start the auxiliary engine. Certainly not the case with this Pacifica. The buckets seats and comfortable ride are very impressive. However, there is no center console arm rest and a big gap exists between the two front seats. I miss the larger arm rest between the seats and also the deep storage compartment found in most vehicles.

The appearance is that of a powerful van with a sleek hood and “Jazz Blue Pearl” paint. The interior is attractive and seats and steering wheel are heated and cooled. This is a very versatile utility vehicle that can haul a soccer team or large family with ease and comfort. All of the safety features are included and now we have Car Play where the smart phone can be connected through the radio channels. The Pacifica Hybrid Limited comes with price tag of $50,375 and a 5 year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. Chrysler is very international, with the engine is made in Mexico, transmission in US, and the assembly in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. I like driving this vehicle and the ride is exceptional.

2019 Ford F-150 Raptor is awesome

a special tow mode option. Horsepower was not provided, but the pickup has plenty of power and the ten-speed transmission provides more than enough muscle in a drive or pulling a boat or trailer. Dual engine oil cool gauges show oil temperatures for hard mountain drives pulling a load. Overall fuel averaged around 15 mpg. with a large fuel tank capacity with a range of over 500 miles on a tank of gas. The Raptor has all new safety features and a 360-camera angle that is useful in towing with a wide rear screen view. Led lighting and large outside

mirrors enhance the safety of this truck. Driving the truck in city traffic was easy and amazing how people give way to a monstrous blue Ford truck with a menacing front grille. The safety rating on the F-150 Raptor is a perfect fivestar and the comfort level and cabin ride is impressive. It would be easy to pull a camper and view America inside this vehicle. American made in Detroit, Michigan, this truck is a great example of the quality, engineering, and factory assembly of Ford Motor Co. products. Ford is on the move.

Resilient Rockies salvage a rough week

in for another disappointment as the Diamondbacks drove in 2 runs in the top of the eighth inning to give them a 7-3 lead. But in the bottom of the eighth inning, the comeback kids did it again scoring 5 runs highlighted by Raimel Tapia’s triple with the bases loaded to tie the game. Tapia scored on a Ryan McMahon single to give the Rockies an 8-7 lead which closer Wade Davis clinched in the ninth inning. The major concern that arises from the past week is the string of erratic performances by the Rockies once vaunted rotation. There were 45 runs scored against the Rockies in these 7 games with 12 home runs allowed. Even a hot offense won’t be able to salvage many wins from that level of performance. On the bright side, some kudos are due. The Rockies defense has been outstanding as

the team is tied for third place in the major leagues with a fielding percentage of .990. At the plate, there a several players to be spot lighted. A veteran but new to the Rockies, first baseman Daniel Murphy has proved to be a solid presence in the third spot in the lineup. Murphy has been on base in all nine games since his return from the injured list on April 24. Catcher Tony Wolters has become a contributor at the plate with a .292 batting average including 7 doubles. And finally, the speedy left fielder, Raimel Tapia has delivered some real power numbers with 15 RBI including 5 doubles, 4 triples and 4 home runs. This week the Rockies are at home facing Division rivals: the San Francisco Giants for three games beginning Tuesday and the San Diego Padres on the weekend.

Ford is making a dramatic comeback, not that they ever went anywhere in the first place. Henry Ford has been an icon since he started making Model T cars so Americans could afford a good low priced automobile. Model A’s great success moved onward to a work of art in the Ford Thunderbird, so prized by collectors and owners today. Winners at countless auto shows for the attractive styling and design. Ford has ceased making standard cars for the time being and if you want a Ford car, go buy a new Lincoln that customers brag about. To their credit they have kept the Mustang line and use the Shelby name on some of the immense V8 engine models. Mustang has become the Thunderbird of today as a

high-performance sports car at a competitive price. Ford’s first-quarter earnings report released last week has pushed a stock rally and a market cap of $41 billion, surpassing upstart Tesla that passed Ford in 2017. This has pushed the 117-year-old automaker ahead of Tesla by about $900 million, moving the stock up 11 percent last week. Ford’s wisdom is paying off in the SUV, all-wheel drive line of vehicles and their F-150 pickup-trucks driving US sales. Ford has brought back the F-150 Ranger to the mid-size pickup market, a mini vehicle to the larger F-150 Raptor that arrived in my driveway last week. This new “Velocity Blue” Raptor Super crew 4x4 is a monster with a suggested
