Mill Creek Park’s Winter Celebration - One Man’s Dream: Celebrating 125 Years of Mill Creek Park started Dec. 3 and will run every Tuesday through Sunday until the end of December. More than 45 non-profit organizations decorated trees at Fellows Riverside Gardens for people to look at as they walk through the building. Meals of Wheels decorated a tree for the first time this year to show their mission and partnership with Subaru’s Share the Love event. Meals on Wheels decorated their tree with photos of drivers and board members of the Mahoning County Branch. The tree was decorated with blue and silver to match Subaru’s theme for the Share the Love event. Meals on Wheels started their planning in October. A children’s car was next to the tree with a giant snowman driving and cans of food in the back seat. Subaru will donate $250 to Meals on Wheels for every Subaru purchased starting Nov. 17 through Jan. 3, 2017. “Our drivers are just outstanding. Martial arts instructor teaches at after school program Poland After School Program had a new visitor in October. Tom Richie, an instructor at the Martial Arts Training Center in Poland, spent five days teaching different martial arts classes. He had the rapt attention of the students as he showed them many of the basic moves. For many of the childrens, it was their first exposure to the martial arts and the teachers could tell by the expressions on their faces that the children enjoyed it. “There was a $10 fee for the
sessions, but Instructor Richie donated the entire fee directly back to the after school program,” said Asst. Director Mary Beth Komsa. “The funds will be used to purchase gym equipment, games, puzzles and more to keep the kids minds and bodies moving.” Poland After School currently has 120 pre-K through fifth-graders registered this year. The program is located at the former North Elementary building.

Students begin day on the Polar Express By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Students at Poland North Preschool stayed in their pajamas as they rode the Polar Express to school on Dec. 13. As students arrived to school, they lined up behind a cut-out Polar Express train to start the beginning of their Polar Express day. Upon entering the building, the students prepared to celebrate the rest of their special day. Students from Danielle Argeras’s, Joy Bucci’s and Samantha Cox’s classes sat together as they watched a “Polar Express” film. When the movie was finished, the students went back to their own classrooms to finish out the Polar Express day. All three teachers had their students participate in different Polar Express activities. Students in Cox’s class decorated cookies and went fishing for candy canes, along with several other fun projects planned for the day. Bucci’s class went to the gymnasium as they worked on their songs for their upcoming Christmas sing. Argeras set out silver bells, like the ones in “The Polar Express” around the classroom for students to find and take home with them. The students and teachers enjoyed their fun-filled day all in the comfort of their own pajamas. With the holidays approaching, the students will continue to work on their songs for the upcoming Christmas sings.

Supper with Santa at Boardman Park fills people with joy By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Several families made their way to Boardman Park on Dec. 7 and 8 to enjoy the annual Supper with Santa event. Boardman Park has been hosting the event since 2003, making this the 13th year. The two-night event started out as one night, but with the popularity of the event it became two nights. “It’s a great family holiday celebration,” said park recreation director Karen McCallum. Families get to take a picture with Santa in his sleigh, do some crafts, eat supper and play with fake snow. There was
also a station where children could dress up as Santa using different props and clothing items. This event gives the families a chance to enjoy spending holiday time together. Both nights of the event get sold out and about 120 people attend the event each night. There are volunteers from the Boardman High School Emerging Leaders Club who help at each table with the different crafts. The children were able to bring home all of the crafts they made during the event. As the families left the park they watched as the Christmas decorations lit up the park and could listen to Christmas music on their car radio to stay in the holiday spirit.

Students get holiday shopping done early at Santa’s Workshop By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Dobbins students had a few days to shop for holiday gifts during school on Dec. 13 and 14 during Santa’s Workshop. Students had the opportunity to purchase gifts for their friends and family from the shop the Dobbins PTO worked hard to put together. Several parents volunteered their time work during
Santa’s Workshop to make sure the shop ran smoothly. The PTO plans the workshop every year and provides items that are affordable for the students. There was a variety of items available for the students to purchase. There were gifts showing Poland school spirit, toys for children, products for adults and various others. Each class came down one at a time and had around 30 minutes to pick
out their gifts. The students could use baskets to hold their gifts until they were ready to check out. The money made from Santa’s Workshop goes back to the Dobbins PTO to help fund other activities and classroom parties for the students to enjoy. Santa’s Workshop gives students the opportunity to have fun, while being productive, and buying holiday gifts.

Neighbors wants winter sports news Winter athletics have arrived and Neighbors wants to be there every step of the way. If you’re a sports coach or the parent of an athlete, we need your help. In order to get teams and players the recognition they deserve, we want to showcase them in our pages.
We can only do that if you commit to sending us game reports and photos each week. If you send it, it will get in. You can email us at neighbors@ vindy.com. You don’t have to be a writer — just send us the information and we’ll put it all together. When emailing pictures, send them as JPEG files and as large as possible. Provide caption information and where people are located from left to right, front row to back. The sports news we’re looking for ranges from varsity high school teams down to middle school and even elementary and recreational leagues. We look forward to hearing about your teams successes.
