Mooney takes over Barnes and Noble for ACHMV By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

Cardinal Mooney staff and students volunteered their time to collect donations for Akron Children’s Hospital of the Mahoning Valley on Dec. 9 and 10 at Barnes and Noble. Staff, such as languages teacher Marlene Bassil, spent time organizing the event and volunteering. Art teacher Maureen Kandray and her students decorated the Starbucks lobby in the store. “When Cardinals appear, angels are near,“ was the school’s slogan for the event. Volunteers made red origami birds to give out during the event to go along with their mascot, the Cardinal. They had pens, notebooks and

other items with the school’s logo on them at the event. The volunteers gift wrapped presents for those at the library for a small fee. The Starbucks location made a special drink called the “Mooney Mocha“ during the two days. All money made through the wrapping and drink sales went toward Akron Children’s Hospital of the Mahoning Valley. The school also brought in their choir and speech and debate team to the store on Sunday. The choir sang Christmas Carols during the event. The speech and debate team had a story time in the children’s section of the store. They also brought a Cardinal Mooney coloring book activity with them.

Dobbins families give back to those in need By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

Dobbins Elementary School’s PTO organized a Giving Tree Project at the school from Dec. 4-15 to help less fortunate students throughout Mahoning County. They filled five boxes and six bags full of socks, gloves, mittens, scarves, headbands, earmuffs, hats and coats. The items went to the Mahoning County Children Services, which will distribute the donated items to children in need. “Children naturally want to give back and help, and we want to encourage them to keep that feeling alive,“ said Michael Daley, Dobbins Elementary’s principal. The PTO Service Committee coordinated the Giving Tree Project at the school. Ja-

nine Malloy, the chair for the Service Committee, said the committee is very important to the school, as it teaches the children to share with others throughout the community. The committee designated two classrooms to collect each item of clothing to ensure they received a good amount of each item. They also asked for donations of coats for children from the school’s families. They received 21 coats overall. “W hen Mr. Daley reached out to Mahoning County Children’s Services in October to coordinate the Giving Tree Project, our contact indicated that a caseworker had just shared a coat with a toddler the day before. It warms your heart to know that a project our children supported was able to provide a coat to child in need,” said Malloy.

Jennifer Kollar, public information officer for Mahoning County Children Services, said they have more than 500 children to serve throughout the county. These children often have very little in terms of winter clothing, so these types of programs throughout the community help. They collect clothing for infants to 18-year-old children. Kollar said the program “is an

amazing gift.“ She complimented the project for having “kids help kids,“ which she believes leaves a “tremendous impact“ on the students. Dobbins Elementary’s PTO Service Committee has two annual events: the Giving Tree Project in the winter and a food drive in the spring. The Giving Tree Project has occurred every year for more than 10 years at the school.

Girl Scout Troop 80200 went to the Poland library for the “Nutcracker Sweets” event that gave them a story, many crafts and activities and sweets.

The Poland library celebrates “The Nutcracker” By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

The Poland library kicked off their series of holiday events with their “Nutcracker Sweets“ event on Nov. 30. Librarian Jennifer Kuczek organized the event. She had a story time and plenty of crafts during the event. Each station she set up in the room related to the story. She wanted to do an event

around the Nutcracker stories and ballet for a couple of holiday seasons. Kuczek said she loves the story of the Nutcracker and “wanted to bring it to life for the kids.“ The event began with Kuczek reading a pop-up book version of “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King“ by E.T.A. Hoffman to the children. After the story, the children could go around to the different stations throughout the room. Most children chose to go to the back station, “The Land of the Sweets,“ after the story. The children received candy and lemonade at this station. They made little bags of candy to carry with them throughout the room and take home. The children could do a number activities. One station showed where the children should place their feet for different ballet positions. The table at the station had a number of books on ballet the families could check out. At another station, the chil-

dren could play ring toss where they tossed rings on the mouse king to defeat him. They also had “Sugar Plum Fairy Dough,“ where the children could play with a putty-like substance. Kuczek also set up a number of crafts. The “Princess Pirlipat’s Paper Dolls“ station gave the children a sheet where they could cut out a paper doll. The children colored the nutcracker on a worksheet at another station. The other craft had the children create their own nutcrackers using toilet paper rolls, markers, glue and paper. The families could also take pictures between the library’s Christmas tree and a giant nutcracker. Kuczek also played music from “The Nutcracker Suite“ by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, and some of the children danced near the center of the room. The Poland library hosts a number of holiday events, with different special events every year. Kuczek will be offering this event at other branches of the library throughout the month.
