Saxon club to have pork-kraut dinner The Youngstown Saxon Club, located at 710 S. Meridian Road, will host its next pork-kraut dinner on Jan. 15 from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The price is $9.50 for adults and $5 for children. The menu includes dessert and coffee, tea or pop. The public is welcome and take-outs will be available.

APA shoe drive taking place In the spirit of the holidays, Austintown Podiatry Associates recently announced its annual shoe drive. They are accepting new and gently used shoes at all three offices. The shoes will then be delivered to those who are less fortunate. Shoes can be dropped off at any of the three locations during business hours. More than 5,000 fans cheered on the Youngstown Phantoms during the special Get Schooled event at the Covelli Centre on Dec. 8.

Schools from the Mahoning Valley area brought students to the Covelli Centre to enjoy a game of hockey while also learning about different careers. There were businesses set up in the concourse area that stu-

dents could visit the table and talk to representatives from the company. “The purpose behind the game is not only to expose students to hockey, but also to provide our Hockey for Health

Several families made their way to Boardman Park on Dec. 7 and 8 to enjoy the annual Supper with Santa event. Boardman Park has been

hosting the event since 2003, making this the 13th year. The two-night event started out as one night, but with the popularity of the event it became two nights. “It’s a great family holiday celebration,” said park recreation

director Karen McCallum. Families get to take a picture with Santa in his sleigh, do some crafts, eat supper and play with fake snow. There was also a station where children See SANTA, Page 6

Theft: A stolen credit card was reported by a person who lives in a home in the 4000 block of Kirk Road. Warrant: Police arrested Katherine Sakalosh, 32, of Wilshire Drive, Youngstown, on a warrant for failure to comply on a possession of dangerous drugs charge. She was also charged with soliciting and possession of criminal tools. Identity theft: A Paypal account was involved in an identity theft at a home in the 3000 block of Johnson Farm Drive. Assault: Two men were involved in an assault at a home in the 5000 block of Mahoning Ave. Theft: An Ohio driver’s license was taken from a purse at MoJo’s, 6292 Mahoning Ave. Auto theft: A 2004 Chrysler fourdoor sedan was stolen from a home in the 1000 block of Moorefield Road. Drug overdose: Police arrested Raymond Olson, 27, of Mathews Road, Boardman, after he was found with another male unconscious in the front seat of a running car in the parking lot of a South Meridian Road business. Lane Ambulance first responders administered four doses of Narcan to the suspect before getting a pulse. He was arrested for operating a motor vehicle under the influence. Dec. 29 Theft: Police arrested Joshua Weston, 36, of Mahoning Avenue on a theft charge. Police accuse him of taking two cartons of cigarettes from Sheetz gas station, 5499 Mahoning Ave.

Burglary: Police arrested Joseph McCoy, 34, of Broad Street, Struthers, on a burglary charge after police said he was caught inside a home in the 400 block of North CanfieldNiles Road. Theft: Police issued a summons to Louis Dumas, 77, of Wilcox Road on a theft charge. Police accuse him of taking $42.84 in candy, food and a web cam from Walmart. Theft: Police issued a summons to April Futton, 56, of Westmont Drive on a theft charge. Police accuse her of taking $177.16 in merchandise from Walmart. Menacing by stalking: Police received a complaint that a male suspect will not stop bothering a female who lives at a home in the 4000 block of Woodhurst Boulevard. Warrant: Police arrested Robert Tatt, 31, of Compass West Drive on a warrant for breaking and entering a home on Center Street, Struthers. Warrant: Police arrested Raymond Betts, 33, of South Turner Road on a warrant for burglary. Theft: A 20-inch black Fit Conway bicycle was stolen from a home in the 500 block of North Four Mile Run Road. Dec. 30 Assault: Police arrested Michael DiGregorio, 51, of South Main Street for a reported assault at Chippers Sports Lounge, 5 N. Edgehill Ave. Theft: A check was cashed without the property being delivered at a home in the 1000 block of Laurelwood Place. Domestic violence: Police arrested Richard Farrow, 59, Lanterman Road on the charge of domestic violence and issued him a summons on charges of drug abuse of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. to enjoy spending holiday time together. Both nights of the event get sold out and about 120 people attend the event each night. There are volunteers from the Boardman High School Emerging Leaders Club who help at each table with the different

crafts. The children were able to bring home all of the crafts they made during the event. As the families left the park they watched as the Christmas decorations lit up the park and could listen to Christmas music on their car radio to stay in the holiday spirit.

Austintown Senior to attend Dartmouth on four year scholarship through QuestBridge Program Founded in 1994, QuestBridge is a national nonprofit based in Palo Alto, Calif. that connects the nation’s most except iona l, low-income youth with leading colleges and opportunities. This year Austintown senior Giovanna LaGamba received a scholarship through the QuestBridge “National College Match” program. Students selected for the College Match are “matched” to one of QuestBridge’s 38 college partners, admitted with a guaranteed full, fouryear scholarship, including

tuition, room and board, and other expenses. Out of 15,000 applications, 767 students were chosen from around the United States. On Dec. 2, LaGamba found out she was one of those selected students and matched with Dartmouth University. 1. Scholarship applications are based on the following academic criteria: 2. John and Lucille Hrinak celebrate 75th anniversary STRUTHERS John and Lucille (Marinelli) Hrinak of Struthers are celebrating their 75th anniversary at a private gathering today with their family. It will be hosted by their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They are Barbara (Hrinak) Orenic of Boardman and Jack and Sandi Hrinak of Medina, Ohio. Grandchildren are Michele Bonamase and Christine Ward; and greatgrandchildren are Nicolette Bonamase and Brittany Ward. A great-grandson, Brandon Bonamase, is deceased. The couple were married Nov. 20, 1941, at St. Dominic Church in Youngstown. They are members of St. Nicholas Church of Christ Our Savior Parish and AARP. Mrs. Hrinak worked for Almart Department Store in Boardman and retired in 1975 as a receiving clerk. She is a member of Holy Family Senior Citizens. Mr. Hrinak worked for Master Addresser Co. of Minneapolis, Minn., and retired in 1983 as a factory

representative. He served in the U.S. Army with the 18th Airborne Corps in the European Theater during WWII. He attained the rank of master sergeant and is a member of VFW Post 3538.

Boardman Park started the Christmas season on Dec. 4 with the 20th annual Community Christmas. The Community Christmas event is a free event for the public to come and participate in several activities. One of the biggest parts of the Community Christmas is the decorating of the parks pine trees by families and organizations.

Each of the pine trees can be purchased by any of the community members to decorate. The park requests that the pine trees should be decorated with natural materials the park animals are able to eat. People used bagels, popcorn, fruits and other edible items. All of the pine trees were purchased and the proceeds raised from the trees goes back to the park to continue hosting different programs.

After people finished decorating their trees, they had the option to watch some music performed by the Boardman High School band, enjoy cookies and hot chocolate and visit Santa once he arrived via fire truck. The Boardman High School band played Christmas carols that Linda Smrek sang along

to. The band performed in the St. James church and guests sat and listened to music as they ate cookies and drank hot chocolate. Once Santa arrived children waited in line to get a picture with him and tell him their wish list. The lighting of the Christmas tree in Boardman park

took place halfway through the event. The lights shone bright on the tree as the other decorations lit up the pathways in the park. Puhalla earns Eagle Scout rank Leo J. Puhalla of Austintown was awarded his rank of Eagle Scout on Dec. 4 at his Court of Honor ceremony at St. Joseph Church.
