Essential oil class to take place in January and February Naturopathic Doctor Dannielle MacDuff is offering a four-week course on how and when to use essential oils and how to include them in your first aid kit. The course is of particular interest to individuals who prefer holistic health remedies rather than prescription medication. Start the New Year in stitches with TQGIBT TQGIBT – That Quilt Group I Belong To – will be stitching a stunning table topper/wall hanging at the January meeting on Jan. 17. Led by members Mida Delaney and Mary Rose Nordquist, participants will be sewing a foundation paper pieced project called Paddlewheel. Participants are asked to bring their sewing machine and basic sewing supplies, as well as a rotary cutter and mat, ironing surface and iron. A water soluble glue stick and add-a-quarter ruler would also be helpful. As always, guests are welcome – it’s a great opportunity to visit the guild and watch as members work on their projects. The event begins at 1 p.m. for those anxious to start sewing, whether stitching your Paddlewheel or a charity quilt. After a break at 5 p.m. for dinner at Broad Street Diner, the meeting will commence at 6:30 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. TQGIBT meets at Fair Park in Canfield on the third Tuesday of each month, with some exceptions, and is open to all quilters in the Mahoning Valley, at all skill levels. The Canfield High School student council coordinated the Salvation Army Angel Tag Drive again this holiday season and, according to the Salvation Army, Canfield High School is the largest donor this year. The school supplied items for 325 tags, with donations coming from all student council members, CHS staff, Interact Club and Canfield Rotary. The truckload of toys was loaded at Canfield High School and headed to the Salvation Army on Dec. 7. Major Valerie Kahn of the Salvation Army visited the school as students loaded the truck, with the help of Salvation Army truck driver Mark Young. “The students here at Canfield do a fabulous job every year. I am proud of them. This is a great hands-on experience for these young people. This is my sixth year here, and every year it gets bigger and bigger. I think those results show how excited the students are to help families and children in need. We have over 700 families and 1,768 children in Mahoning County who have registered with the Salvation Army this year,” Major Kahn said.

Major Kahn also said these students’ efforts prove that there is still good in the world. “Seeing all these donated toys is something to behold. I love this part because I get to see all the toys being loaded onto the truck. I talk about these students throughout the whole year, not

just at the holidays. This inspires me. It reminds me why I do what I do. It proves that there is still good in the world. These students are the future and it is great that they are exposed to charitable giving now, knowing they will continue giving as they get older,” Major Kahn said.

Major Kahn noted that the need for help never goes away. “The need never goes away. It is year round. No one wants to see families and children go without. That is very evident here today and we thank Canfield High School for their support,” Major Kahn said.

APA shoe drive taking place In the spirit of the holidays, Austintown Podiatry Associates recently announced its annual shoe drive. They are accepting new and gently used shoes at all three offices. To celebrate Giving Tuesday, Cardinal Mooney High School, along with an anonymous Alumna donor, contributed $500 to the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley. This donation was made in honor of all Lumen Christi eighth-graders in the Diocese of Youngstown and St. Paul’s School, Salem, and St. Joseph the Provider School, Youngstown. Eighth-graders are unable to volunteer at the Mission due to age constraints, so Mooney wanted to make sure these younger students would be represented in the annual Giving Tuesday event. Several families made their way to Boardman Park on Dec. 7 and 8 to enjoy the annual Supper with Santa event. Boardman Park has been hosting the event since 2003,

making this the 13th year. The two-night event started out as one night, but with the popularity of the event it became two nights. “It’s a great family holiday celebration,” said park recreation director Karen McCallum. Families get to take a pic-

ture with Santa in his sleigh, do some crafts, eat supper and play with fake snow. There was also a station where children could dress up as Santa using different props and clothing items. This event gives the families a chance to enjoy spending holiday time together. Both

Salvation Army receives anonymous gold coin donation Salvation Army kettles in Mahoning County got a much needed boost with three oneounce gold coins discovered in three of its kettles across the area. The coins: a one-ounce fine gold Canadian Maple Leaf was dropped in a kettle at Canfield Giant Eagle Supermarket, one-ounce fine gold South African Krugerrand, and a oneounce Grant Wood American Arts Commemorative Series coin were dropped in kettles at the East and West entrances of Giant Eagle Supermarket in Austintown, respectively. The coins were donated by an anonymous donor(s) who left no note or information. The coins will be appraised at Ace Diamond & Jewelry Brokers, Inc in Board-

man. Each coin may be worth $1,200-$1,300. The Red Kettle Campaign is the biggest fundraising effort undertaken by The Salvation Army Mahoning County each year. “At a time when our Red Kettle Campaign is running behind by over $40,000 as of Dec. 20, 2016 compared to the same time last year, these gold coins will help us make up some of the fundraising gap we have experienced this season,” said Major Elijah O. Kahn, Mahoning County Area Coordinator. “We are amazed by this incredible generosity, and we want to express our thanks and gratitude to the donor(s) for this generous gift. It will make a huge difference in our ongoing ministry

this Christmas and year round.” The Salvation Army has been serving the neediest citizens in Mahoning County since 1884 providing holistic services that meet the spiritual and practical needs of all. The organization serves thousands of individuals, men, women, children and the elderly with food, clothing, Christmas assistance, toys, utility and rental assistance, emergency aid, social services, youth and recreational programs, seniors programs and men’s and women’s programs. The 2016 Red Kettle Campaign has a goal of $350,000. Funds raised at Christmas are used locally. The red kettle campaign runs through Dec. 24. home all of the crafts they made during the event. As the families left the park they watched as the Christmas decorations lit up the park and could listen to Christmas music on their car radio to stay in the holiday spirit.

Canfield dominates Cardinal Classic tournament By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

The third annual Canfield Cardinal Classic boys basketball tournament took place at Canfield Village Middle School Dec. 3-4 and Dec. 10-11. The 2016 tournament included a total of 26 fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade teams. Canfield High School boys basketball players volunteered their help at the tournament, including working the scorers table. Player parents also volunteered throughout the tournament, helping at the concession stand and working the admittance table. Proceeds from the annual tournament will benefit the boys Basketball Boosters. The boosters use the money to buy a large piece of equipment each year, such as a shooting machine, and the proceeds also help defray the cost of summer camps and shootouts. The bride is the daughter of Jack and Sheila Koontz of Austintown, and the groom is the son of Mike and Judy Libnoch of South Carolina. Her husband graduated from KSU Trumbull with a bachelor’s degree in technology. He is a content specialist for FactSet Research Systems in Youngstown. The bride wore a white satin gown with a sweetheart neckline embellished with crystal beading. It featured a corset back, inverted basque waist with a fit and flare silhouette and a chapel-length train. Wearing black gowns were the bride’s sister-inlaw, Marlo Boehlke, matron of honor, and maids of honor Jennifer Shaffer and Lindsey Shaffer. John and Lucille Hrinak celebrate 75th anniversary STRUTHERS John and Lucille (Marinelli) Hrinak of Struthers are celebrating their 75th anniversary at a private gathering today with their family. It will be hosted by their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They are Barbara (Hrinak) Orenic of Boardman and Jack and Sandi Hrinak of Medina, Ohio. Grandchildren are Michele Bonamase and Christine Ward; and greatgrandchildren are Nicolette Bonamase and Brittany Ward. A great-grandson, Brandon Bonamase, is deceased. The couple were married Nov. 20, 1941, at St. Dominic Church in Youngstown. They are members of St. Nicholas Church of Christ Our Savior Parish and AARP. Mrs. Hrinak worked for Almart Department Store in Boardman and retired in 1975 as a receiving clerk. She is a member of Holy Family Senior Citizens. Mr. Hrinak worked for Master Addresser Co. of Minneapolis, Minn., and retired in 1983 as a factory

representative. He served in the U.S. Army with the 18th Airborne Corps in the European Theater during WWII. He attained the rank of master sergeant and is a member of VFW Post 3538.

As a result of Canfield High School seniors and varsity soccer players Jad Saleh’s and Cecilia Shaer’s National Honor Society service project, Soccer Pink Outs on Oct. 8, the students presented The Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center with a check for $1,645 on Dec. 7. The students raised breast cancer awareness and funds during the Pink Outs during the girls junior varsity and varsity soccer games and the boys junior varsity and varsity soccer games on Oct. 8. The students presented the check to Rashid Abdu, M.D., along with Gina Marinelli of Mercy Health Foundation of Mahoning Valley and Juli Dulay, manager of The Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center at St. Elizabeth’s. “These students deserve recognition for doing what they do to help us. Community Christmas creates holiday joy By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Boardman Park started the Christmas season on Dec. 4 with the 20th annual Community Christmas. The Community Christmas event is a free event for the public to come and participate in several activities. One of the biggest parts of the Community Christmas is the decorating of the parks pine trees by families and organizations. Each of the pine trees can be purchased by any of the community members to decorate. The park requests that the pine trees should be decorated with natural materials the park animals are able to eat. People used bagels, popcorn, fruits and other edible items. All of the pine trees were purchased and the proceeds raised from the trees goes back to the park to continue hosting different programs. After people finished decorating their trees, they had the op-

tion to watch some music performed by the Boardman High School band, enjoy cookies and hot chocolate and visit Santa once he arrived via fire truck. The Boardman High School band played Christmas carols that Linda Smrek sang along to. The band performed in the St. James church and guests sat and listened to music as they ate cookies and drank hot chocolate. Once Santa arrived children waited in line to get a picture with him and tell him their wish list. The lighting of the Christmas tree in Boardman park took place halfway through the event. The lights shone bright on the tree as the other decorations lit up the pathways in the park. T he a n nua l Com mu n it y Christmas brings community members together to celebrate the holidays. The parks hopes the event continues the success it has had all 20 years.
