Mike Senchak, president of First Light Home Care of Austintown, stepped up to join the Rotary Club of Austintown to give gift cards to families in need this Christmas. A local businessman for more than 30 years, Senchak spoke to Rotarians about the evolution of his business, which included the Mahoning Valley Hospital at one time. Seeing the need for home services, especially for the eldery in lieu of nursing home care, Senchak purchased the former bank building at the corner of Raccoon Road and Mahoning Avenue to establish a center for services that allow seniors to function in their homes. Senchak also funds after school programs at Tabernacle Church, Falcon Wellness programs and health speakers. Pictured is Rotary Club President Mal Culp presenting a library book, which will be placed in the AES library, to Senchak in honor of his speech.

Hot chocolate for the holidays By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Hot chocolate and other candies were served at the Austintown library on Dec. 7 for the HoHo-Hot Chocolate event. Austintown librarian Lindsay Platt hosted this event for the first time and had a successful turnout. A table was set up with a chocolate fountain, pretzels and supplies to make your own hot chocolate. Another table was filled with different types of candies. There were peppermint sticks, white chocolate chips, chocolate syrup, sprinkles and more. The tweens and teens attending the event dipped their pretzel rods in chocolate and coated them with the different candy available. After the pretzels dried, they were put into a clear bag to make into a gift bag to give to someone or take home for themselves. While some people worked on making hot chocolate and chocolate-covered pretzels, others sat back and watched a movie. “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” was playing for those who finished their gifts or wanted to take a break. “We had a lot of people in and out. Some came in to make the hot chocolate, some came to make the little gifts that we were doing. Some just ate the chocolate-covered pretzels,” said Platt. The chocolate fountain was a big hit among the guests. Platt mentioned that the guests went through six pounds of chocolate during the hour-long event. Although this was the first time the event occurred, things went smoothly. The people were eager to make chocolate treats for themselves and for others while enjoying a holiday movie.

Austintown Fitch High School hosted a Trade Fair for all high school students at Austintown Fitch on Dec. 9. Representatives from the Western Reserve Building Trades attended the high school to talk about several different trades.
Fitch students learn about college alternatives By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Representatives from the Wester n Reser ve Bu i ld i ng Trades made an appearance at Austintown Fitch High School on Dec. 9 for the semi-annual trade fair show. Instead of the fair being open to only juniors and seniors like previous trade fairs, this time it was open to all grades in high school. The trade fair give out information to the students who may not want to go to college and would rather work toward a career right out of high school. Ma r ie Dock r y, g u ida nce counselor at Austintown Fitch, helped organize the trade fair this year with the help of Don
Crane, the Western Reserve Building Trades Council President. The trade fair started with members from different trade companies talking to the students about apprenticeships and the different responsibilities of starting in a trade company instead of going to college. “I was at a career fair just like this, 1972, when I first heard about the trade. I graduated in ‘73. The day I graduated, that night I started my apprenticeship. That’s just the way it worked out, it’s doable,” said Carlton Ingram, part of the Operating Engineers Local 66. The trade company representatives emphasized a lot about how many apprenticeships are
free for the students although they cost a lot of money for the company. Hearing this interested several students, who in turn asked for more information on the money aspect of apprenticeships. They were intrigued to learn that, while college can cost a lot of money depending on your financial situation and scholarship availability, working for a trade company can allow people to make money while acquiring useful stills that directly relate to their careers. Austintown Fitch will continue its semi-annual Trade Fair in hopes of providing alternate opportunities for students who are not exactly sure what they want to do after graduation.

Santa rides sleigh into Boardman Park By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Children and t heir fa milies enjoyed a fun-filled night with Santa at the Supper with Santa event at Boardman Park on Dec. 8 and 9. Santa came to the Lariccia Fa mily Communit y Center to eat dinner with guests and take pictures just in time for Christmas. The event is so popular that Karen McCallum, recreation director, made it available for two nights and both nights were sold out. The children and their families arrived to enjoy dinner first and watch a classic holiday movie. After guests finished eating, they went into the adjoining room to make crafts and take pictures and visit with Santa. Right next to Santa in his sleigh was a table with several holiday props. Many of the children liked to dress up in the Santa costumes. Dif ferent tables were set up with various crafts. Some children made Christmas ornaments while others played with stamps to make cards. With Christmas approaching, Supper with Santa gave participants a night to prepare for Christmas. All of the
On Dec. 5, four Austintown Middle School First Lego League (FLL) Robotics Teams (Dark Matter, 9 Volts, Girlbotics and Another Mad Squad) competed in t he Wa rren Delphi Regional FLL competition. The AMS teams competed against 20 other teams from around Northeast Ohio. The morning competition consisted of students doing three presentations, which included a project presentation, a robot presentation and a core values presentation. In the afternoon, the teams had to program a LEGO mindstorm robot to perform missions on the table and were then scored based on the best of three rounds. All four teams received awards at the competition and three teams (9 Volts, Girlbotics and Another Mad Squad) were invited to the District Tournament in January at the University of Akron. AMS Dark Matter won the Project Innovative Solution award, which recognizes a team’s solution that is exceptionally well-considered and creative, with good potential to solve the problem researched.
AMS 9 Volts won the Judges Award, where during the course of competition, the judges may encounter teams whose unique efforts, performance or dynamics merit recognition. Some teams have a story that sets them apart in a noteworthy way. Sometimes a team is so close to winning an award that the Judges choose to give special recognition to the team. Judges Awards allow Judges the freedom to recognize remarkable teams that stand out for reasons other than the Core Awards categories. AMS Girlbotics won the Core Values Teamwork Award, which recognizes a team that is able to accomplish more together than they could as individuals through shared goals, strong communication, effective problem solving and excellent time management. AMS Another Mad Squad won the Robot Performance award for scoring the highest score on the Robot table - 495 Points. The Robot Performance Award recognizes a team that scored the most points during the Robot Game. Teams have a chance to compete in at least three, 2.5-minute matches and their highest score counts.

Guests attending the 20/9 Amateur Radio Club Annual Craft show on Dec. 12 at the Austintown Senior Center shopped around for gifts and looked at different vendor tables.
Craft show helps local businesses By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
The 20/9 Amateur Radio Club hosted its third annual Craft Show and Vendor Expo on Dec. 12 at the Austintown Senior Center. The radio club hosts two craft shows per year to help raise funds for the club. The club is a non-profit 501c3 organization that helps handle radio communications for events around the Youngstown area. Dotti ONeilMeleski, the Vice President of the 20/9 Amateur Radio Club, helps organize the crafts shows. “Everything that we do is all volunteer, we can never get paid for any services we provide. So we have fundraisers throughout the year to fund our club to keep it going,” said ONeil-Meleski. More than 75 vendors made an appearace at the craft show to sell their products and try to get their names out. Three large rooms were filled with vendors, who all came early in the morn-
ing to set up their tables. One goal of the craft show is to support the idea of shopping and buying local, which boosts the local economy. Aside from having vendors, there is a Holiday Food Basket collection. Monetary donations and non-perishable food donations are accepted to help those in need. With the monetary donations, other foods are bought in, along with toys for the children. For each item and monetary donation, a person received a ticket for a special door price. Pictures with Santa were also available as a special surprise for the children who attended. The 20/9 Amateur Radio Club will continue to host the craft shows in an attempt to help support their club while helping others. The radio club wishes to thank the Austintown Senior Center for their willingness and happiness to provide a space for the craft show.
