New year kicks off with new learning space and MLK Day events By Natalie Wright Neighbors Editor

The main branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County recently opened a brand new interactive learning experience through a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The new space a i m s to pr o mote education Wright for children in grades K-8 and offers a unique opportunity for them to get hands-on experience working with the latest technology, including the chance to fly a drone to learn about aerodynamics, compose music on music editing software, film an animated movie and more. The learning space is also in partnership with OH WOW! The Roger and Gloria Children’s Center for Science and Technology. Several stations and activities are paired together to present a completely rounded experience. Participating in these activities will earn your child a stackable badge, which will show off their newly acquired skills. Check in your Neighbors edition in the next several weeks for

our coverage of the grand opening of this space. Also, this week will start off with a celebration of Martin Luther King Day. The struggles of the Civil Rights movement still affect our nation to this day and it is important to make sure that our children understand the importance and significance of the meaning behind this holiday, not just that they can be out of school for an extra day. This year, I challenge not only our readers, but also myself, to spend whatever time possible this Monday reflecting on the historic significance behind Martin Luther King Day. Resources for teachers, parents and students are available through The Vindicator’s Newspapers in Education website found at www.nieteacher.org/ vindynie/, as well as through visiting your local library. Further information on Rev. Martin Luther King, his family and nonviolent social change can be found online at www.thekingcenter. org. In addition, February is right around the corner, and with it comes the celebration of Black History Month. Don’t forget to look in your copy of The Vindicator Feb. 1, 8 and 22 for facts, pictures and more dedicated to honoring Black History Month.

POLL RESULTS Every week, we’ll provide a question about our Neighbors communities and ask you to weigh in with an answer. And we hope you’ll share an opinion as well. Here are the results to last week’s poll.

Several quilts were also

on display and some were available for purchase. Neff also had quilting kits, supplies and gifts for quilters, which are also available at Village Quilts or www. villagequiltscanfield.com. “I wanted to represent Village Quilts here today because our quilting ties into the historic theme of Loghurst Farmhouse Museum,” Neff said. Superintendent lends Zambrini leaves lasting legacy in Canfield support to LaBrae student By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

Former Canfield Local Schools Superintendent Dante Zambrini passed away on Jan. 4. Zambrini served the Canfield Local Schools as superintendent for 10 years, from 2002-2012, and served in other capacities in the district for 36 years, including assistant superintendent, director of administrative services, Canfield Village Middle School principal and Canfield High School secondary instructor. Zambrini earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Education and Administration from Youngstown State University in 1976 and 1980, respectively. He was a graduate of Ursuline High School. Julie Kercher, who has known Zambrini for more than 36 years, said he was dedicated to his students and the community. “What can I say about Dante that will best explain my view of this man, my dear friend? As an educator, he was dedicated to his students and to instilling in them the skills that would take them to their highest potential. As an administrator, he knew he could not please everyone, but he always did what was best for all involved and achieved much more than many are aware. As a member of the community, he became involved in many civic groups to help improve the community, and he not only made others aware of issues but also helped neighbors share their love of home,” Kercher said. Kercher also said Zambrini was a dear friend and will be greatly missed. “Most importantly, as a friend, Dante was always ready to lift my spirits when I experienced a loss, to be the first to applaud my

DANTE ZAMBRINI.

achievements, and to share with me his passion for seeing the very best in people. Like politicians, Dante could ‘work the room,’ but it was never to gain votes or acceptance. He did so to make everyone feel honored, accepted and special. If you paid attention and knew him well, his legacy is that you embrace life not as it is or as it might be but as it should be,” Kercher said.

After being diagnosed with stage four thyroid cancer and enduring an eight-hour surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, LaBrae High School freshman Tanner Noble is getting the support of not only his community and his fellow students, but other communities as well. The students of LaBrae have formed Vikings Hope to help raise funds for Noble’s medical costs which are not able to be covered by insurance. Vikings Hope and members of the community have been busy organizing several fundraisers for the Noble family, most notably Shave for the Brave. Members of Vikings Hope have been busy collecting pledges from members of their community and other communities to shave their heads if a fundraising goal is met. One person who has pledged to shave his head in support of Noble is Canfield Local Schools Superintendent Alex Geordan. Geordan is an alumni of LaBrae and his daughter is a freshman at the high school. Geordan will shave his head if they raise $10,000. “I am happy to help support the Noble family. They are a family who will do anything for anyone, and now it’s our turn to step up and help them. It is tough enough for anyone with medical conditions, but when it hits our youth, it strikes a nerve and pulls at heartstrings. It pulls

the community together to help and the LaBrae community and students are really stepping up,” Geordan said. Noble’s mother, Demetra, has also pledged to shave her head if the group raises $2,500. Other fundraisers scheduled include a police/fire versus LaBrae faculty basketball game and an alumni versus alumni basketball game, a spaghetti dinner and a golf outing. All events are open to the public. Vikings Hope is also selling bracelets and T-shirts to raise money for Noble. “The health of a child is first and foremost and people want to help in any way they can, no matter if the child is in the LaBrae community or the Canfield community,” Geordan said. To learn more about Noble and his journey, visit Facebook, Twitter or Instragram and search #TannerTuff. The Shave for the Brave pancake breakfast will take place from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Feb. 14, at the Johnson Community Center, located at 800 Gillmer Road in Leavittsburg. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12. For more information or to make a donation, contact LaBrae students Nathan Hendryx at 330-898-5802 or Jason Downey at 330-898-8521, or Geordan at ageordan@canfieldschools.net or 330-7663238.

Hilltoppers shop for the holidays By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

Hilltop Elementary School students shopped till they dropped at the school’s annual PTOsponsored Santa’s Workshop Dec. 9-11. The holiday ‘store’ was set up in the school’s library by parent volunteers and is designed to be a safe, child-centered environment where children can learn how to budget and spend wisely, while also experiencing the gift of giving. Before the children shopped at Santa’s Workshop, a form was sent home with the students which allowed them and their parents to make a list of the people, and pets, they wanted to buy for and create a budget for each of their purchases. Gifts for all ages were available for purchase and included toys and games, a variety of holiday items, jewelry, ornaments, books, mugs, tools and sports items. All items were priced from 25 cents to $5. When the children had completed their shopping, they went to the wrapping table where several PTO volunteers wrapped and labeled the gifts for the children to take home. Several volunteer members of the PTO shop year-round for items for Santa’s Workshop, which gives the students the chance to pick out high-quality gifts for family and friends at a low cost. A variety of items are purchased after the holidays when discounts are available. The year-round shopping process, which focuses on buying items at deeply discounted prices, was started eight years ago to be able to provide the students nice gifts as an alternative to ordering all the items for Santa’s Workshop from one company. Noelle Domer served as chairmen of this year’s Santa’s Workshop and Alyssa Farris served as lead shopper. Dozens of volunteers were involved in this year’s workshop, performing such tasks as buying the items, organizing and pricing the items, setting up the workshop, helping the children shop, wrapping the children’s gifts and packing up after the workshop was over.

Sprout Club pops with excitement By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Sprout Club at Fellows Riverside Garden had its monthly meeting on Dec. 17 and this time the topic was all about popcorn. Lynn Zocolo, the horticlture educator at Mill Creek Metroparks, led the class with help from Mandy Smith, the education director. The children attending learned about popcorn and where it comes from and how the kernels pop into popcorn. The children started the class with a coloring sheet before Zocolo started walking around with pictures of corn plants, corn and then popcorn. Popcorn kernels were passed out to each child for them to feel, smell and look at. After the children were done examining the kernels, they starting working on making a snowman snack cup. There was a little, clear cup at each child’s seat for them to decorate. They would put googly eyes on the cup along with a red scarf, then they would draw a mouth and some buttons on to decorate it however they’d like. While the children waited for their popcorn snack to pop, they all went up to what Zocolo referred to as the “discovery table.” The discovery table had two big bowls on it which contained field corn, popcorn kernels and already pre-popped popcorn, which was used for the children to look at and play with as they waited. “The smell, you can’t go wrong with popcorn,” said Zocolo as the room filled with the smell of freshly popped popcorn. When the popcorn finished popping, the children ate their snack while listening to Zocolo read a story about popcorn. One of the things mentioned in the story was a popcorn volcano, and that’s exactly what Zocolo tried to make as a finale to the event. She laid out a sheet and put the air popper on the ground and removed the lid. She then put kernels in the air popper and waited for the kernels to pop. The children stood around the air popper, some chanting “popcorn volcano,” as they waited for the popcorn to fly into the air.
