Ca n f ield V i l lage M idd le School’s fifth- and sixth-grade choirs, under the direction of Tom Scurich, celebrated the holiday season with music and singing during the school’s annual winter choir concert on Dec. 5. The students performed to a standing room only auditorium packed with family and friends at Canfield High School. Courtney Larson accompanied the choirs on piano. Scurich welcomed the audience to the concert. “Good evening and welcome to our fifth- and sixth-grade winter choir concert. The second selection is a Columbian carol and the third selection, “Hanukkah Shalom,” is a piece showing the love and peace of the holiday. The fourth selection is an African-American spiritual. Spirituals are a very important part of American history and are the foundation of American music,” Scurich said. The fifth-grade choir opened the show with “Solstice” by Randall Thompson, followed by “El Pequeno Nino,” arranged by Ruth Dwyer and Henry Leck.
The choir continued the show with “Hanukkah Shalom” by Ruth Elaine Schram and Linda Marcus and closed their portion of the performance with “Child of God,” an African-American Spiritual arranged by Emily Crocker. Gomez selected for national softball camp and tournament Mary Gomez, a sophomore at Canfield High School, recently participated in the Under Armour Softball Factory Christmas Camp and Tournament in Vero Beach, Fla. After attending a national tryout in Dublin, Ohio in August, Mary was one of 80 girls from 29 different states across the country that was selected to attend. The camp took place at the historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Fla., former spring training facility of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The week included training and instruction from many former division one coaches and players, and a five game tournament. For the five games, Mary batted an even .400, with two walks, scoring six runs for her team, Under Armour Hyper Green. Her team finished 3-2, good enough to place third out of eight teams. Winter athletics have arrived and Neighbors wants to be there every step of the way. If you’re a sports coach or the parent of an athlete, we need your help. In order to get teams and players the recognition they deserve, we want to showcase them in our pages. We can only do that if you commit to sending us game reports and photos each week. If you send it, it will get in. You can email us at neighbors@ vindy.com. You don’t have to be a writer — just send us the information and we’ll put it all together. When emailing pictures, send them as JPEG files and as large as possible. Provide caption information and where people are located from left to right, front row to back. The sports news we’re looking for ranges from varsity high school teams down to middle school and even elementary and recreational leagues. We look forward to hearing about your teams successes.

More than 5,000 fans cheered on the Youngstown Phantoms during the special Get Schooled event at the Covelli Centre on Dec. 8. Schools from the Mahoning Valley area brought students to the Covelli Centre to enjoy a game of hockey while also learning about different careers. There were businesses set up in the concourse area that students could visit the table and talk to representatives from the company. “The purpose behind the game is not only to expose students to hockey, but
also to provide our Hockey for Health program in a different way. We visit to schools to do the program, but it’s nice to bring them to the arena to showcase what our guys do on the ice and also use it as a way to get our message out there,” said Director of Operations Katie Seminara-DeToro. The morning at the Phantom’s game was a little different for some students. There were 10 students from Austintown Fitch High School’s Future Business Leaders of America group who spent the morning job shadowing different staff members.

Schools from all over the Mahoning Valley area came to the Get Schooled event at the Covelli Center on Dec. 8 and watched a Youngstown Phantoms game.
“It teaches you to be quick on your feet. You have to have quality, not just do it fast and do it sloppy, but do it fast and do it well,” said senior Morgan Crawford. “It gives you an insight that it’s not something you can throw together last minute. You have to be willing to prepare,” said senior and Vice President of FBLA Sienna Morales-Sweeney. Job shadowing gave the students an insight as to how the game-day operations work and what the different departments do. Some students worked in the production booth, others followed the sales department while some worked
with Seminara-DeToro in operations. “I hope they appreciate the athleticism of the sport. These are players that aren’t that far removed from a lot of these students,” said Troy Loney, co-owner of the Phantoms. “There’s a lot of different ways to get to a college career, hockey being one of them.” This is the seventh year the Phantoms have had the Get Schooled event and continues to be one of the favorite games amongst the staff, the schools and the players. The Covelli Centre and the Youngstown Phantoms look forward to the event each season.

Youngstown Alumnae Panhellenic Association hosts holiday luncheon The Youngstown Alumnae Panhellenic Association had its holiday luncheon at Johnny’s Restaurant with a flute entertainment program by YAPA member Kimberly Russell. The luncheon is a time to celebrate the Panhellenic bond, with members and honor members who have a membership milestone. YAPA recognized four members for Life Membership, which is for 50 years of membership. Honorees were presented with a certificate from Panhellenic and a gift to acknowledge their dedication. The life members were Shirley Bell, Donna Fulks, Sally Ocker and Judy Reddick. Sixteen YAPA members participated in a “Smart Cookie” program. Members donated sweet treats for YSU Collegiate women as a care package for finals week. Each sorority was given treats for their individual members, along with a note of encourage-
ment. YAPA also made a $200 donation to the YSU Collegiate Panhellenic Council for Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values Conference that will be in February. The Youngstown Alumnae Panhellenic Alumnae Association is in its ninetieth year and provides lifelong alumnae involvement for Greek alumnae women and supports collegiate Greek women. YAPA members contribute and raise funds for a scholarship, develop and strengthen the Panhellenic bond and provide support for collegiate sororities at Youngstown State University. YAPA has leadership positions available for sorority alumnae. For more i n for mat ion about membership, contact at y oa lu mpa n hel @ g m a i l . com, or visit the website www. youngstownalumnaepanhellenic.weebly.com to obtain a membership form.
