Teens begin epic quest at Boardman library By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

Teenagers gathered in the Boardman library’s meeting room on Jan. 17 to create characters for their future fantasy adventures. Members of the library’s Teen Advisory Board (TAB) created a program for the teenagers to run a Dungeons and Dragons campaign. They met for the first time to make their characters that they will use throughout the quest. Boardman librarian Amy Burkard supervises the library program, titled “Apprentice’s Inn,“ but the creation of the event came from Daniel Pirone, a long-time member of the TAB group. Pirone came to the TAB meetings with Dungeons and Dragons guides and materials that he checked out from the library, Burkard recalled. The books sparked the interest of other members of the TAB group who had played the game before or had wanted to play the game. The TAB group decided to create the Apprentice’s Inn program because of the interest, since the role of the group is to get teenagers more involved with the library. They spent about four meetings planning the event, which included naming the program and making certain they had all the materials needed between the library and group members. Burkard said the program gives them a safe space to play and join together, as members come from different schools. The group allows teenagers to meet new people who have a shared interest in fantasy. She said the library has done this type of event in the past and there seems to be a growing interest in the game again because of media such as the Netflix show “Stranger Things,“ where the characters have their own Dungeons and Dragons campaign. The group spent most of their first meeting creating their char-

characters, but instead control the adventure and the way the story plays out. In future months, the group will go on their adventure. Through the campaign, the group will split into two different parties with two dungeon

masters. Both groups of adventurers will head on a quest to fight evil. Eventually, the two groups will combine near the end of their campaign. They chose to name their campaign the Apprentice’s Inn for a reason. First, the members of the group are mostly new, some having never played Dungeons and Dragons at all, so they chose “apprentice” be-

cause they are just learning the game. They decided on “inn“ because it is a common setting and beginning place for new campaigns. The Apprentice’s Inn program occurs on the third Wednesday of each month. The group will have pre-designed characters for those who wish to join the campaign once they have begun their quest.

Mill Creek celebrates winter in Davis Center By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

Mill Creek Metroparks had a special “Toyland“ holiday celebration at the D.D. and Velma Davis Education & Visitor Center throughout December. The Davis Center had areas where families could play during the open hours of the building. The Mill Creek workers and volunteers set up giant toy soldiers like those from “The Nutcracker” in their toyland, which

they filled with building blocks, board games and a train set. The park also organized a holiday tree walk and scavenger hunt. Organizations throughout the community decorated different plastic Christmas trees for the holiday tree walk. Families walked through the different areas of the Davis Center to see all of the holiday trees. They designed the scavenger hunt for children to find different areas of the Davis Center.

The Davis Center opened for special hours each Saturday night throughout December for their “Winter Celebration Nights.“ These special hours operated in the same way as their toyland celebration, but they had more games, a light display and hot chocolate from Kravitz Garden Café at a discount price. Lynn Zocolo said they wanted the winter celebrations to See WINTER, Page 6

Kimbrough was wanted on a Campbell warrant charging him with violating a court order. Assault: A woman alleged that during an argument related to an air-conditioning unit in her Wolosyn Circle apartment, the accuser’s landlord pushed on her door, striking her with it. The woman had no apparent injuries, however. Harassment: A worker for a Southern Park Mall store told officers a man who claimed to be the mall’s manager made several unwanted calls to her. Identity theft: Officers booked Neasha L. Taylor, 27, and Michael A. Faiola Jr., 33, both of Lynn Avenue, Poland, on charges of identity theft, misuse of a credit card and receiving stolen property, related to a Sept. 21, 2017, situation in which a Youngstown woman reported her purse stolen and that someone tried to use her credit card at several township locations. Arrest: After pulling him over on Grover Drive, authorities took into custody Raheem A. Satterthwaite, 28, of East Boston Avenue, Youngstown, on charges of being a convicted felon with a firearm, obstructing official business and resisting arrest. Jan. 12 Assaults: Authorities responded to the 100 block of Carter Circle, where a tenant and a landlord each reported having been assaulted by the other. The landlord alleged the tenant

The woman also realized $1,100 was removed from her account via automated teller machine withdrawals. Arrest: Police picked up Robert J. Koby of Birch Trace Drive, Austintown, who was wanted on three counts of public indecency and one of possessing drug paraphernalia after an incident last June in which three employees with a Boardman-Poland Road gas station alleged Koby, 26, pulled down his pants and performed lewd acts in the business. Also, a scouring pad with burn marks indicative of drug use was in Koby’s vehicle, a report stated. Participants at the Boardman library’s All About Yarn event finished their rugs on Dec. 8 that they had started the previous month. Karen Saunders taught beginner-level crocheters how to make a “rug rag,“ a rug made out of older clothes to upcycle unused cloth. The participants’ rugs took an oval shape, but they could have made a rectangular shape if they had wanted. Some participants brought in old shirts or sheets to make their projects. They cut the material into strips and crocheted the rug together. The crocheted style gave the rugs an unusual texture to them. Saunders used the theme of a “rag rug,“ but she explained that the participants could use yarn to make normal rugs. One of the members of the event in November came to the event in December with a crocheted rug made of vintage yarn. The participants talked about their lives during the event. Two mot hers ta lked about motherhood, and a third member whose children were older talked about how she raised her children. They laughed and connected whole working on

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize at the Boardman library every Tuesday in January at 10 a.m.

Then, after this detailed look into WHY you hurt, we’ll sit down together and go over everything. We’ll answer any questions and discuss your options for feeling better. We’ll also work out a written action plan to get you there, so it’s all down in black & white. And even after all this, you’re STILL under NO OBLIGATION to do anything, or to spend even one thin dime.

their rugs. The majority of the group had begun their projects in November and used the time between the All About Yarn meetings to finish their rugs. One new member came to the meeting and Saunders helped her begin her project. The others learned how

to stitch non-slip material onto the bottom of the rug to prevent it from moving too much while in the house. Saunders has had All About Yarn classes all throughout the year. She will begin 2018 with a class on peg loom weaving on Jan. 25.

Neighbors wants winter sports news The snowy season is here, winter athletics have arrived and Neighbors wants to be there every step of the way. If you’re a sports coach or the parent of an athlete, we need your help. In order to get teams and players the recognition they deserve, we want to showcase them in our pages. We can only do that if you commit to sending us game reports and photos each week. If you send it, it will get in. You can email us at neighbors@vindy.com. You don’t have to be a writer — just send us the information and we’ll put it all together. When emailing pictures, send them as JPEG files and as large as possible. Provide caption information and where people are located from left to right, front row to back. The sports news we’re looking for ranges from varsity high school teams down to middle school and even elementary and recreational leagues. We look forward to hearing about your teams successes.
