The concert included performances from the concert band and choir, with selections from smaller ensembles within the two groups. Jeff Hvizdos directed the bands and Shannon Nicholson instructed the choirs. A member of Holy Fa mily Church welcomed the audience to the concert as the band prepared to play. Hvizdos also spoke before going into “A Christmas Flourish,“ a James Curnow arrangement for the wind ensemble. T he nex t song, “Yes V i rginia, There is a Santa Claus,“ required some introduction. Composer Robert W. Smith wrote the song based on an editorial piece published in The Sun. The article responded to a young girl’s inquir y about whether or not Santa ex-

The school just recently added the a cappella group to their program. Four students from the choir combined on backto-back duets of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside“ and “Love and the Weather.“ A sa xophone quartet followed the duets. Mill Creek celebrates winter in Davis Center By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com
Mill Creek Metroparks had a special “Toyland“ holiday celebration at the D.D. and Velma Davis Education & Visitor Center throughout December. The Davis Center had areas where families could play during the open hours of the building. The Mill Creek workers and volunteers set up giant toy soldiers like those from “The Nutcracker” in their toyland, which
they filled with building blocks, board games and a train set. The park also organized a holiday tree walk and scavenger hunt. Organizations throughout the community decorated different plastic Christmas trees for the holiday tree walk. Families walked through the different areas of the Davis Center to see all of the holiday trees. They designed the scavenger hunt for children to find different areas of the Davis Center. The Davis Center opened for
special hours each Saturday night throughout December for their “Winter Celebration Nights.“ These special hours operated in the same way as their toyland celebration, but they had more games, a light display and hot chocolate from Kravitz Garden Café at a discount price. Lynn Zocolo said they wanted the winter celebrations to offer “a free, family fun event.“ See WINTER, Page 6

Alumni game brings in money for scholarship fund
Neighbors wants winter sports news
On Dec. 27, Cardinal Mooney High School, located at 2545 Erie Street in Youngstown, hosted its second Men’s and Women’s Alumni Basketball Game in honor of alumnus Dave Petty, class of ’84. Petty was an alum, coach and teacher at CMHS before his passing in 2010. To honor Petty’s legacy, CMHS hosted a coed basketball game to benefit its Adopt-AStudent Scholarship Fund. More than 200 attendants helped to raise more than $2,500 for AdoptA-Student, which provides tuition assistance to deserving and at need students. The teams (gray and white) largely coached themselves, with current CMHS boys basketball coach Carey PalNeighbors | Submitted ermo and girls coach Jason Baker Pictured are Petty’s daughter Magen, Raynae Petty, Petty’s widow, and son William during the second annual Cardinal Mooney Alumni basketball game. acting as referees.
The snowy season is here, winter athletics have arrived and Neighbors wants to be there every step of the way. If you’re a sports coach or the parent of an athlete, we need your help. In order to get teams and players the recognition they deserve, we want to showcase them in our pages. We can only do that if you commit to sending us game reports and photos each week. If you send it, it will get in. You can email us at neighbors@vindy. com. You don’t have to be a writer — just send us the information and we’ll put it all together. When emailing pictures, send them as JPEG files and as large as possible. Provide caption information and where people are located from left to right, front row to back. The sports news we’re looking for ranges from varsity high school teams down to middle school and even elementary and recreational leagues. We look forward to hearing about your teams successes.

For the sixth year in a row, Todd Bury and Brian Laraway of Bury Financial Group committed to donating $50 for each touchdown scored by the Poland Bulldogs during the 2017 season to the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley. Bury and Laraway, along with Laraway’s daughter, Quinn, presented the check for $1,500 to Bob Hannon, United Way President, at the UW annual Holiday Basketball Classic at Poland Seminary High School on Dec. 9. Since 2012, Bury Financial Group has donated a total of $9,000 through the United Way Touchdown Challenge. Pictured are Bob Hannon, Todd Bury and Brian Laraway’s daughter Quinn.

Holy Family second-graders had a guest visitor in their Spanish class. Kristi Sanchez came in and talked to the students about her Christmas traditions from New Mexico. The students showed off all the Spanish words they have learned, including regalo (present), Arbol de Navidad (Christmas tree), verde (green), rojo (red) and Feliz Navidad (Merry Christmas). She brought in a special treat of biscochitos (a Spanish cookie) and Feliz Navidad sugar cookies in the shape of New Mexico for the students to enjoy. Spanish teacher Stephanie Markey taught the students how to make an ornament craft of an Ojo de Dios (eye of God) after sharing the history and meaning behind it.
