Book donation

Neighbors serves the towns of Boardman, Austintown, Canfield and Poland and is published every Saturday in The Vindicator. It also is distributed free to nonsubscribers in those towns.

While many students spent their holiday receiving, Austintown Intermediate student, Mary Fedorek, spent her holiday gathering materials for a local charity. The fourth-grade student came up with the idea to collect books for the less fortunate, and with the help of two of her teachers at AIS, she was able to collect close to 500 books. Throughout the years, she has collected many toys and clothes for various organizations. All of the books collected were donated to the Boys & Girls Club of Youngstown. The books will be used to create a learning room at the local charity.

If you have a news story, we would be interested in hearing from you. You may email us at neighbors@vindy.com. You can send mail to Neighbors, P.O. Box 780, Youngstown, OH 44501. Northern Whale, a local band from Youngstown, is working on expanding their popularity by becoming a contestant in the second annual jukebox “Battle of the Bands” contest put on by TouchTunes. TouchTunes is the largest in-venue interactive music and entertainment platform and is featured in more than 70,000 bars and restaurants across North America and Europe. Northern W ha le’s single, “Deep,” is competing against almost 300 other unsigned artists and their singles. The winner of the competition will win a live audition with Warner Brothers Records A&R, a music promotion on TouchTunes and $3,000. “It feels amazing to be in this, not even necessarily for the contest, but it’s really cool to be on TouchTunes. By being at a TouchTunes Jukebox location, such as Buffalo Wild Wings, you can download the app or simply walk up to it and play ‘Deep’ by Northern Whale. It’s really cool when it’s playing and we look around the restaurant, and find a few people tapping their foot or wondering what the song is,” See BAND, Page 4

Boy Scouts and their leaders from Boy Scout Troop 60 presented the International Peace Light flame to the congregation of Bethel Lutheran Church in Boardman during the St. Lucia Festival and Children’s Christmas Pageant Service on Dec. 13. Participating in the presentation to Pastor Richard Kidd (center) were, from left, John Russell, Joe Vasko, David Santangelo, Colin Russell, Stephan Vasko, Mathew Vasko and Dave Santangelo.

Boy Scouts share the International Peace Light in the Valley With the arrival of the International Peace Light on Nov. 30, at the Greater Western Reserve Boy Scout Council office in Warren, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts were busy distributing the Peace Light flame to churches and their friends and families in the Valley. The Peace Light flame was available at the council office to anyone of any faith throughout the weeks before Christmas. Many people came from all over northeast Ohio to receive the flame and return to their homes and share it with their churches. Two deliveries made by Boy Scouts occurred at the JMJ Spiritual Connections II store in the Cornersburg area of Youngstown and Bethel Lutheran Church in Boardman. On Dec. 4, Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 22 from St. Christine’s Church transferred the flame to the owners of the Spiritual Connections II store, Dora Jean and Stephan Havrila, who for the third year had the flame available to anyone in the community during their normal business hours. People from as far as Salem came to the store to receive the flame. On Dec. 13, Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 60 from Westmin-

ster Presbyterian Church transferred the flame during the St. Lucia Festival and Children’s Christmas Pageant at Bethel Lutheran Church in Boardman. The church also made the Peace Light flame available to anyone in the community before and after Christmas. For more than 25 years the Peace Light from Bethlehem has been brought from overseas to America through the cooperation of the Austrian Broadcasting Company – ORF (Linz), Austrian Airlines and the Austrian Boy Scouts and Girl Guides. The 2015 arrival of the Bethlehem Peace Light arrived this year at the JFK airport on Nov. 28. This year’s sponsor in the United States is the Brooklyn Catholic Committee on Scouting. They have provided for its distribution throughout North America, including Canada and Mexico. All Peace Lights originated from this American location as couriers deliver the Peace Light to various locations on the continent. You can see more information about this year’s efforts by visiting the websites www. peacelight.org or www.scout. org/peacelight.

On Jan. 11, the Austintown Lions Club hosted Governor’s Night, with King Lion John Susany presiding. The special guest was District Governor Bob Allgood of the East Liverpool Lions club. Governor Allgood in his remarks praised the Austintown Lions Club for their good work and reminded them of the upcoming District 13-D convention March 11-13 in Canton, at the McKinley Grand Hotel. This convention will mark 50 years for the district. He also presented the club with a Membership Satisfaction patch, and presented a 25-year service award to David Hicks. Bartolone and the children pretended to be a wolf pack to go hunting for different stuffed animals hidden in the trail at Ford Nature Center. The children wore the wolf masks they made so they would look like the wolves.

Children howl with excitement to learn about wolves By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

Mill Creek Metroparks hosted a Big Bad Wolf event for children ages 3-6 on Jan. 7 at the Ford Nature Center. The focus of this month’s program was wolves. The class was led by Mill Creek Metroparks naturalists Hillary Lenton and Julie Bartolone. The children began the event

by coloring a picture of a wolf to get them prepared for the class. To give the children more informed on wolves, instead of having a story, Lenton and Bartolone put on a short skit. Bartolone performed with a wolf puppet and Lenton wore a red cape to pretend to be Little Red Riding Hood. “The kids are going to learn the truth from the fable in stories,” said Bartolone. The skit was set up as an in-

terview. Lenton, as Little Red Riding Hood, would ask Bartolone, the wolf, questions about wolves. Bartolone would explain what is real about wolves versus what people read in stories. The skit was a fun way for children to learn rather than being told facts from a sheet of paper. After the skit, the children worked on making their own wolf masks. They colored in a See WOLVES, Page 13

wolf face, cut out the shape and glued it to stick. This allowed the children to hold the mask up to their faces and pretend to be wolves before they went outside for their last activity. “We are going to take the kids outside and be a pack of wolves.

Julie will be the alpha wolf and hunt as a pact. We hid stuffed animals on the trail,” said Lenton. When the children finished making their masks, they went outside to pretend to be a pack of wolves. Stuffed animals were hidden around the trail at Ford Nature Center and the children had to follow Bartolone to hunt for the stuffed animals that

served as their food. The program finished with the children splitting up into two packs. One pack would try to intimate the other pack of wolves that were trying to move into their homes. Ford Nature Center hosts different monthly programs to allow children to engage in educational activities about nature and wildlife.

Jan. 30 marks the date Youngstown Soup will be hosting a community micro-granting dinner celebrating and supporting creative projects in Mahoning County. With a donation of $5 attendees receive soup, salad, bread and a vote on some of the most innovative project proposals in Youngstown. There will be four presenters who will have four minutes to share their idea on their project proposal, which will help the community in some way. Attendees will have the chance to vote on their favorite soup, enjoy a 50/50 raffle and participate in a silent auction of donated goodies from the Valley’s finest businesses. At the end of the night the ballots are counted and the winner takes home the proceeds raised from the dinner to carry out their project. During the next event they will present to the community how they carried out their project. The event takes place at the Calvin Center, located at 755 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown, on Jan. 30 from 6-9 p.m.
