Hilltoppers travel around the world

By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

Hilltop Elementary School second-grade students took their audience of family, friends and fellow students on a holiday trip around the world during the school’s annual Holidays Around the World program on Dec. 20. The students performed the show three times throughout the day. The students, under the direction of Stephanie Summers, Hilltop music teacher and accompanied by Courtney Larson on the piano, performed the holiday program which included songs representing several countries. Musical arrangements were by Paul and Teresa Jennings. “Welcome to our second graders’ Holidays Around the World program. They have put a lot of hard work into preparing for this show. Our students and second grade staff have done a great job and we hope you enjoy,” said Joe Maroni, Hilltop Elementary School principal as he welcomed the crowd. The students entered the multi-purpose room with a processional of “Joy to the World” and once the students were on stage, asked audience members to stand and recite the “Pledge of Allegiance.” Throughout the program, students performed the songs “Festival of Lights,” arranged by Lauren Mayer; “O Christmas Tree,” of Germany; “Deck the Halls,” of Great Britain; “The Pinata Song,” of Mexico; “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” arranged by J. Fred Coots, of the United States; “Up on the Housetop/ Jolly Old St. Nicholas,” of the United States; “O Hanukkah,” of Israel and the Jewish Nation, and “Auld Lang Syne,” arranged by Donnelly/Strid. Each song represented its country of origin and in between numbers, students read the holiday traditions of the countries highlighted. For example, be-

fore singing “O Christmas Tree,” a student noted Germany was the first country to have the Christmas tree and before singing “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” a student noted that it is a Christmas Eve tradition that children wait for the arrival of Santa Claus. A student also noted, before the performance of “Up on the Housetop/Jolly Old St. Nicholas,” that the U.S. has the most customs and beliefs because the country is made up of people from all over the world and before singing “O Hanukkah,” a student explained that Hanukkah is an eight-night celebration which includes traditional foods and small gifts. To close the program, the second-graders sang “Around the World.” “Thank you all so much for coming out today and we hope Neighbors | Abby Slanker you enjoyed our show. Have a safe and happy holiday season,” A second-grade Hilltop Elementary School student donned a sombrero during the singing of “The Pinata Song” at the school’s annual Holidays Around Summers said. the World program on Dec. 20.

School board recognition month taking place The Ohio School Boards Association is celebrating School Board Recognition Month. January 2017 has been selected to build awareness and understanding of the vital function an elected board of education member plays in our society. The Canfield Local School District is joining with other districts throughout the state to recognize the important contributions school board members make to their communities. School Board Recognition Month honors the members of Ohio’s more than 700 city, exempted village,

local and joint vocational boards of education and educational service center governing boards for their commitment to providing quality public education to Ohio’s school children. “Ohioans benefit every day from the dedicated energies and countless hours devoted by a group of more than 3,400 men and women across the state,” said Superintendent Alex Geordan. These public servants are elected to serve by local citizens and receive little compensation for their tireless efforts. These men and women are the local

school board members of Ohio. These people selflessly contribute their time and talents toward the advancement of public education. They represent a continuing commitment to local citizen control and decisionmaking in education. These are the dedicated individuals serving Canfield Schools, and are committed to the continuing success of our schools and students: Phil Bova, since 2012; Nancy Lacich, since 2014; Craig Olson, since 2010; Barry Tancer, since 2014; Dave Wilkeson, since 2016.

Eighth-grade student Delaney Pallo was crowned the 2016 school champion of the annual Canfield Village Middle School Spelling Bee on Dec. 21. Each grade level crowned a winner, with Aubree Neuhaus and Harjote Kaur named fifthgrade co-champs, Grace Min named sixth-grade champion, Jaelyn Palmer named seventhgrade champion and Maggie Carrier named runner-up and eighth-grade champion. All grade level champions received a Barnes and Noble gift card, courtesy of the principal’s fund, while Carrier and Pallo

also received a one-year online subscription to Britannica Kids, courtesy of the Scripps National Spelling Bee Program. Pallo also earned a spot in and will represent CVMS in The Vindicator Regional Spelling Bee at Youngstown State University on March 11, for the chance to move on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. The 49 student spellers qualified for the bee by winning a classroom spelling bee, with each homeroom class having a representative, along with one student from each individual Language Arts class and four winners from last year. “Welcome and thank you for

coming. We congratulate and welcome 49 spellers to the competition. Thank you to parents and families who have supported and helped these spellers prepare,” said Erica Putro, spelling bee coordinator. Putro then turned over the spelling bee to guest pronouncer, Youngstown State University English professor Dr. Jeffrey

Buchanan. After eight rounds, the final two spellers, Pallo and Carrier, faced off. Putro explained that for the one word championship round, a student must spell his or her word correctly and then spell one more word correctly to be named overall spelling bee champion.

In the ninth round, Pallo spelled the word ‘lavish’ correctly, and then moved on to spell the word ‘expansive’ correctly to be named the 2016 CVMS Spelling Bee Champion. Spelling bee judges included Putro, Julie Webb, Michelle Napolitano, Mary Lou Thacker, Melissa Nagy, Emily Sipe and Vicki Latimer.
