Knitting guild to meet on Feb. 14 The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Rotary Community Building in Fair Park in Canfield. A program of a knitted headband with right and left twists will be presented by Shawn Anderson. Those wishing to participate should bring size 8 US circular knitting needles, scissors, a stitch marker and a tapestry needle. The pattern will be provided. Newcomers meetings for January and February Newcomers of Mahoning Valley Book Club will be meeting on Feb. 9 and will be discussing a book by David Baldacci, “The Camel Club.” The Movie Group saw “La La Land” in January and is looking forward to seeing another good movie on Feb. 15. Needlework will resume meeting on Feb. 7 and a restaurant and date will be chosen for Roundtowners, also in February. The birthday luncheon will be announced at the luncheon in January. Lions host Treasures of the Trunk Sale The Poland Lions will host a “Treasures of the Trunk Sale” to benefit the Poland Lions Scholarship and Community Funds on June 10 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the Poland High School stadium parking lot. The Lions are currently looking for venders for the one-day sale, including crafters, home goods, furniture, toys, specialty items and venders with garage sale items. There is a limit of 100 spaces, so reserve your space early. Registration is $10 per one parking space prior to May 1. After May 1, the cost is $15 per space. Venders must bring their own tables. PLYMC offers online learning service The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (PLYMC) is offering a free service which connects library cardholders to the popular learning platform, Lynda.com. Library customers can get to the free Lynda.com offerings by using the PLYMC portal through a link on the LibraryVisit.org website. Look on the horizontal menu under “LEARN” for the link. Library customers can learn anytime, day or night. Lynda.com is available online 24/7. The learning resource offers more than 3,000 courses and 150,000 video tutorials taught by experts. Some available areas include 3-D, animation, audio, business, design, home computing, photography, video, the web, technical skills, business techniques, creative skills and more. Friendly Squares to have monthly dance The Niles Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance Feb. 11 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State St. in Niles. Dress is casual and there is a $6 donation per person at the door. This will be a high/ low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Third-grade students at Dobbins Elementary traveled back in time to the 18th century on Jan. 23. The Poland Township Historical Society visited Dobbins to educate the students on the history of Poland from the 18th century to the present. Tracy Kaschak, teacher at Dobbins, contacted Dave Smith of the historical society to see if they would come to the school and talk to the students. The third-grade classes go on an outdoor walking tour in the spring led by Smith. Kaschak thought having the historical society come in prior to the outdoor walk the students would get the opportunity to learn about things they’re going to see on their walk. It also gets the students excited for their upcoming walk to see the things in person they learned about. “The social studies curriculum lends itself to community so it’s just one way of exploring our own community,” said See HISTORY, Page 5

Breakfast raises funds for Celebrate Poland The Celebrate Poland Planning Committee recently announced its second annual Pancake Breakfast/Basket Raffle fundraiser, to take place on Feb. 11 from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the Poland Seminary High School cafeteria, located at 3199 Dobbins Road in Poland. Last year the Pancake Breakfast raised $2000. All the monies raised go to fund the Celebrate Poland’s weekend activities, including the two nights’ music entertainment and fireworks display, both of which promise

to be “bigger and better” this year. The breakfast includes pancakes, sausage and drinks, by donation at the door. There will also be a simultaneous basket raffle the day of the event. Winners need not be present to win. Celebrate Poland is in it’s 11th year and attracts thousands of people for the weekend community event. In 2017, Celebrate Poland will take place on June 30 and July 1. The festivities begin on Friday evening with the Fireman’s Parade, followed by

family fun, food and a night of 80’s music with the band, Disco Inferno, on the Town Hall lawn. Saturday’s all-day activities feature an art and craft show, Chalk the Walks for Poland, a talent contest, and much more, also on the town hall lawn. The weekend culminates with a fireworks display at dusk on Saturday night. An updated Mahoning County Plat Book is now available at the OSU Extension Office in Canfield. This publication contains township maps of the entire county, showing plat maps (including all rural landowners) with detailed information on each section. The book also contains an alphabetical list of land owners relating to the page and section of the plat book. The details of each parcel include the outline of the parcel, who owns the land and how many acres are included. The book is published by Farm and Home Publishers (FHP). FHP uses county and townships offices, ODOT information and 911 information to produce this accurate map. The sale of the Mahoning County Plat Book is a fundraiser for the Mahoning County 4-H program. This book makes a great gift for the avid hunter, hiker or bird watcher of the family. Kashcak. The six third-grade classes were separated into three onehour sessions. The classes would learn about artifacts, buildings, monuments and people who had an impact on the history of Poland. “I liked learning about all the people that made the buildings

and Poland what it is now,” said third-grader Lauren Coss. After listening to the presentations, the students were able to look at the artifacts that were brought in up close. The students would then decide what part of Poland history they wanted to do their school project on. “It seems like it’s an interesting thing. It kind of gives a more comprehensive history,” said historical society President Lar-

ry Baughman. Dobbins and the historical society both agreed this is something they would like to continue. It is something that teaches students to have pride in t heir communit y whi le learning about how it came to be what it is now. “The importance of preserving our history,” said Smith on what he hopes the students walked away with after hearing the presentation.

Harvest Program helps families nationwide By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com

The Boardman Olive Garden and the Big Reach Center of Hope have been working together for several years to help bring happiness to the community. The Harvest Program started in 2003 and every Olive Garden restaurant, nationwide, participates. Olive Garden has donate more than 35 million pounds of food, nationwide, to families in need. The program is one that occurs all year round to help out families. More than 50,000 people at the Big Reach have been helped by

this program. Doug Gough, director of the Harvest Program at Greenford, explained that this was a good way to help people in the community and make friendships. “We want to do things that make impact and this program makes tremendous impact,” said Gough. “It helps people get over some of the bumps in the road.” Families come once a month for distribution, but there are two distributions a month to accommodate the needs of multiple families. There are several restaurants, delis, bakeries and grocery stores who partner with the Big Reach Center of Hope to

help provide a variety of items for the distributions. Joe Bezilla, General Manager at Olive Garden, said his team of staff members are always willing and happy to participate in the program. The staff members have formed a friendship with driver, Steve Sanders, who has been coming twice a week for the last six years to pick up the food.

During orientation for new hires, Bezilla makes sure to talk about the Harvest Program and always receives a positive reaction from the new hires. “Seeing what it does for the people far outweighs the cost,” said Bezilla. “I love the fact that it’s something that we do.” Gough said they encourage the families who receive food to

volunteer their time in the community as a way of giving back. This creates a full circle of people trying to help each other out and making the community a better place. “It blesses my heart to know that I can do some kind of good to get food out to other people,” said Sanders. “It’s something all of our volunteers love to do.”

Junior League hosts Pink Ribbon Tea T he Ju n ior L eag ue of Youngstown sponsored the 22nd annual Pink Ribbon Tea at Stambaugh Auditorium. Dr. Rashid Abdu served as Honorary Chairman. There were 485 guests at the celebration, where breast cancer survivors attend free of charge, made possible by donations from the group’s underwriters, sponsors and Junior League members. The Junior League of Youngstown made a $500 donation in honor of Joanie Abdu and will benefit the fund of Joanie’s Promise through the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. The funds will be used for women who are under-insured or those who are without insurance and cannot afford the diagnostic fees associated with a mammogram. T he Ju n ior L eag ue of Youngstown has served the Mahoning Valley for more than 85 years. This local non-profit organization will solidify its commitment of helping women celebrate survival. Zedaker awarded for 25 years of service January is School Board Recognition month, and on Jan. 9, longtime school board member Elinor Zedaker was recognized for 25 years of service to the Poland Local Schools. Ohio School Board Association Northeast Regional Manager Reno Contipelli attended the Reorganizational Board Meeting to deliver the plaque and congratulate Zedaker. “There are approximately 3,400 school board members across the state of Ohio, but only a small group can say they’ve served 25 years or more in one district,” said Contipelli. “It’s quite an accomplishment.” Zedaker was first elected to the Board in November of 1991, and says she was the only woman running against a field of six men. She is a graduate of Boardman High School, but has been a Poland resident more than 50 years. Her late husband, their two sons and now their grandsons are Poland Bulldogs and Zedaker calls herself, ‘a bulldog, through and Neighbors | Submitted through.’ “It’s an honor to serve this school district.” OSBA Northeast Regional Mgr. The Junior League hosted its annual neighborhood meetings this month in Canfield, Liberty and Poland at a sustainers home. The neighborhood meetings have been a tradition since the 2007-08 League year.The meetings are a small group informal discussion with members to discuss the future planning of the league mission. League members also collected health and hygiene products, craft kits, socks, books, puzzles, coloring books, and markers for Northeastern Ohio Adoption Services.
