The Davis Family YMCA is hosting its third annual FIVE Squared benefit art show and sale from Feb. 7 until March 7 at the McClurg Road facility. The sale is open on a first come, first served basis. All art is hung anonymously. Once pieces are sold, the artists’ names are revealed. This year, more than 200 local, national and international artists donated 610 5 inch by 5 inch pieces of art. Among the donations are pieces from disabled children at a Russian orphanage. All of the art, both amateur and professional, is offered for sale for $25 (adult) or $10 (youth) each. In addition to the sale od the 5 inch art, seven larger works will be presented at a silent auction. The silent auction features pieces by some of the most recognized and respected artists in the community: Al Bright, Nancy Hawkins, Jim O’Malley, Paula Smith, Gary Taneri and Don Wright. All proceeds from the event fund the Art Outreach project, which makes it possible for under-served children in the community to receive high quality art lessons. During 2015, Beatitude House, Casa Madre, the City Rescue Mission, Daybreak and the Youngstown Community School were among those served. FIVE Squared is made possible by the generosity of donating artists, the Classical Strings Quartet, Chipotle, Giant Eagle, Rulli Brothers and many wonderful Y staff and volunteers who help organize the show. All of the art can be viewed online at ymcaart.blogspot.com, with many facts at facebook.com/fivesquaredymca. For more information, call 330480-5656 or email sgray@youngstownymca.org.

NEW TREATMENT OPTION FOR
OPIOID ADDICTION
By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Spring has sprung early at the Austintown library. Guests were able to come in and create their own bird seed ornaments on Jan. 13. Austintown librarian, Lindsay Platt, led the class in making the bird seed ornaments. She started by going through the instructions one by one and then showing what the final product would look like. The class started by mixing together unflavored gelatin, hot water and Karo syrup. Then a combination of bird seed and flour was slowly stirred in to the liquid mixture. After everything was mixed together, the bird seed mixture was placed into a cookie cutter to form a shape of the participant’s choice. They poked a hole in the shape for the ribbon, then the cookie cutter was removed and the seed shapes were left to harden. The bird seed is very sticky when you place it in the cookie cutters. Being sticky helps the seeds stay together and keep their shape after the mold is removed. “It’s pretty gross isn’t it?,” said Platt in reference to putting the mixture into the mold and using her hands to make sure everything is packed tight. Aside from getting your hands a little dirty, making the bird seed ornaments was a fun experience for the participants. They have something they can bring home with them while learning how to make a new craft as well.

Children read with Reese By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Every so often the Austintown library hosts a Tales to Tails event for children to read to therapy dogs. This month children had the chance to read to Reese, a golden doodle therapy dog, on Jan. 23. The children can bring a book from home or pick one out from the library to read to Reese. The library sets an hour aside for Reese and his owner, Dana Patrick, to visit, giving each child their own one-on-one time with
Reese to read whatever book they wish. “We started this in the summer. We come on a Saturday usually once a month and people sign up through the library to come here and the kids get to read to him,” said Patrick. Austintown librarian Starr Jones said this event is one people really enjoy. There is always a good turnout and people are quick to register a spot for their children. Patrick and Reese visit other places, such as schools, to give
students a break from their regular school schedule and spend time with Reese. Patrick, a teacher for Austintown Local Schools, said she was working on a new system with the school called Reese Rewards. Teachers will give out Reese Rewards to students and when Reese visits once a month, Patrick will take the students who earned Reese Rewards to hang out with Reese. Students can read to him, play with him and learn how to take care of a dog. “He is a community partner of Pet Partners therapy dog. Through that we call places and see who wants visits,” said Patrick about Reese. Reese’s visits give children the opportunity to work on their reading skills in a non-judgemental zone, while also enjoying company from a dog.

Fun-filled activities for seniors By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Every third and fourth Thursday of the month, Boardman Park hosts a Senior Fun Day at the Lariccia Family Community Center. The first Senior Fun Day of 2016 occurred on Jan. 21. The event is three hours long and consists of different activities for those who come to enjoy. There is a fee of only $1 and with that there is lunch, a craft, exercise, a blood pressure screening and Bingo. Boardman Park and Senior Independence are in partnership for this event and those who sponsor it are Sunrise Assisted Living, the Blackburn Home and Shepherd of the Valley. There are usually around 70 seniors who attend and come spring, more people will come out to enjoy the nicer weather. Many people that attend are regulars and come as often as they can. A lot of the seniors also come with a group of their friends.

Two women listened carefully as the letters and numbers for Bingo were called at Senior Fun Day. Bingo is played at every Senior Fun Day and is one of the most anticpated activities during the event.
Having senior fun day gives people the opportunity to get out and socialize with their friends who they may not see often, while also meeting new people. One of the favorite parts of the day is Bingo. There are three to four games that are played, and
they play until there are at least three winners per game. “It’s a lot of fun for seniors to get out and not have Winter blues, and enjoy a couples hours at the park and out with their friends,” said Boardman Park recreation director, Karen McCallum.
