CHS students swim with the ‘sharks’ By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
Canfield High School students in Sherry Creighton’s Introduction to Business courses were swimming with the sharks during their Shark Tank presentations on Jan. 6. The students had been learning about entrepreneurship through the Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley JA Be Entrepreneurial program. The JA Be Entrepreneurial program introduces students to the essential elements of a practical business plan and challenges them to start an entrepreneurial venture while still in high school. Students learned about advertising, competitive advantages, financing, marketing and product development with local business mentors teaching the Junior Achievement lessons. This program was made possible through a grant to JA from The Burton D. Morgan Foundation. The Burton D. Morgan Foundation’s mission is to champion the entrepreneurial spirit with a vision of a free enterprise society that supports entrepreneurship and cultivates economically indepen-
dent citizens who contribute to the improvement of their communities. The groups of students presented their product ideas to a panel of judges from the business community, including Julie Michael Smith, Joseph Jeswald, Joseph F. Angelo, Vicki McGee, Gregg Warner, Camille Favre, Jack Scott and Dave Wilkeson. Each group presented a Power Point presentation, which included such specifics as product description, product pricing/ cost, target audience, need met by product, competitive advantage/competitors and a sketch of their product. The students also had a prototype of their product to show the judges. Each student was responsible for a part of the presentation and demonstration of their product. Several groups also came up with a name for their business. Each group also had a tagline to close their presentation. The students pitched such products as the D1 Thumb Guard, Pooch Pillow, EZ Carrying Case, The Cozy Blazer, The Cord Clipper, Pretzel Dipperz and All Together. The D1 Thumb Guard, created by Dingerz, Inc., was de-
signed to minimize the pain in the thumb of a baseball or softball player caused by the bat when hitting, while the Pooch Pillow, created by PSI Industries, was designed to relieve anxiety and provide comfort to arthritic dogs. EZ Way, Inc., designed the EZ Carrying Case to safely transport sneakers and protect the shoeboxes while traveling and The Cozy Blazer was designed to keep women warm in the workplace, offering the comfort of a hiking jacket with the professional look of a business blazer. The Cord Clipper was created to solve the problem of tangled headphone cords and to help keep them organized. Pretzel Dipperz was designed for chocolate covered pretzel rods to dry while standing strait up, thus eliminating the flat part of the chocolate on the pretzel. All Together was created as a full service website, offering several perks for online postings, targeted toward the 12- to 21-year-old demographic. When the presentations were complete, the judges were asked to choose an overall best product winner and overall best presentation winner. The judges convened in the hallway and re-
turned to the classroom to announce the winners. Before announcing the winners, judge Jack Scott addressed the students. “This is the second year I have judged this competition. I am always amazed with the great ideas you students come up with. Your great creativity is sometimes not appreciated. Hats off to you all. These are tremendous ideas. A few might even be worth pursuing. You have all done great work,” Scott said. The judges declared the D1 Thumb Guard as the best product, which was presented by Dingerz, Inc., founders Spencer Woolley, Ricky Havrilla and Richie Herrera. The judges then bestowed the best presentation award on the duo of Justin Schneider and Andrew Murphy of EZ Way, Inc., for their EZ Carrying Case. Nicole Ford, program manager for Junior Achievement of Mahoning Valley, was also on hand to observe the students present their product pitches. “These kids really have some amazing ideas. I love coming out to see what they have come up with,” Ford said.

Student receives surprise at school By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
St. Christine kindergarten student Jason Davis Jr., who goes by J.P., got a special surprise at school on Jan. 24. Jason Davis, a member of the Navy, was stationed in the Middle East and has not seen his family in seven months. Jason made a trip back home for the birth of his new daughter, but his son wasn’t aware his father was home. Principal Walter Carpenter said the entire thing was a surprise to him and the students. J.P.’s teacher, Joann Matune, received a called from Jason’s wife, Jana, earlier that day saying Jason was planning to surprise his son at school. Matune then talked to Carpenter and suggested the whole school doing something in honor of the special moment. Students of St. Christine lined up outside, through the halls and all the way to the classroom of
J.P.. Jason and Jana walked the hallways through all of the students holding up flags and “Welcome Home” and “Thank You” signs. Several students chanted “U.S.A.” while others saluted Jason as he walked by. When Jason and Jana got to their son’s classroom, the couple opened the door and walked in. J.P. saw his dad and immediately ran up to him to embrace him. The whole family had tears of joy coming down their faces, along with students and faculty of St. Christine. “Honestly, this is the best feeling ever having the family together,” said Jana. “I can’t put it into words,” said Jason on the excitement and how he feels seeing his family. J.P. was excited and completely surprised to see his dad show up at his school. Jason will be enjoying the time with his family for a month before he has to return to his duties overseas.

Children at the Mad Science Sprout Club program did an experiment with making marshmallows sink and float in water at Fellows Riverside Gardens on Jan. 19.
Children sprout into scientists By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
Children became young scientists practicing experiments during the Mad Science Sprout Club at Fellows Riverside Gardens on Jan. 19. Lynn Zocolo, horticulture director, was the lead scientist who demonstrated the experiments to the children. Zocolo started the afternoon with a picture of plant roots and explained how the roots are used
to absorb water for the plants. This was put into a visualization by using water, celery, food coloring and paper towels. In one cup there was a piece of celery in colored water which allowed the children to see the water move through the celery stalk. The second way of showing walking water was sticking a napkin in a cup of yellow water, a napkin in a cup of blue water and placing both napkins in an empty cup. The water would
absorb into the napkins and transfer into the empty cup. Many of the experiments performed were hands-on allowing the children to see how things worked. Children had the opportunity to microwave soap and watch it turn into a cloudlike shape. The air bubbles in the soap expanded, but the soap was still solid and could be used as a normal body soap. One of the favorite experiments was referred to as the exploding toothpaste experiment. The children mixed together yeast, water, peroxide
and food coloring. When all of the ingredients were mixed together in a water bottle, the mixture would start to foam and come out of the bottle. The children’s faces lit up when they saw the colorful bubbles flowing out. A final experiment focused on the ability to differentiate the taste of an apple from a potato without using their sense of smell. The apples and potatoes were peeled and sliced so the children couldn’t tell which was which. Some children said they could tell what one was the po-
tato versus the apple with their noses plugged, but others could not. When the program was over, the children enjoyed a snack before they went home. Zocolo made edible slime for the children to take home as well. Zocolo said she put in a lot of hard work and preparation for this program, but it was all worth it to see the looks on the children’s faces when they take part in the experiments. The next Sprout Club will be on Feb. 16 and the children will learn about air plants.
