Saxon Club has porkkraut dinner on Feb. 19 The Youngstown Saxon Club, located at 710 S. Meridian Road, will host its next Pork-Kraut dinner on Feb. 19 from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The price is $9.50 for adults and $5 for children and includes dessert and coffee, tea or pop. Mardi Paws Wine Taste event to be Feb. 25 To celebrate Mardi Gras, Legacy Dog Rescue is hosting a MARDI PAWS Wine Taste event on Feb. 25 at Lil Paws Winery, located at 17547 Mahoning Ave. in Lake Milton from 6–10 p.m. Admission is $10 for wine tasting, appetizers, desserts and classic Mardi Gras fare. There will be a prize for best dressed and a Chinese Auction. Live music starts at 7 p.m. Proceeds will help Legacy Dog Rescue, a local 501c3 nonprofit group, save and rehabilitate dogs that have been abandoned, abused or neglected and place them into loving homes.
Transportation Director resigns The Austintown administration thanks John Lenkey for his hard work
as Transportation Director for the district. Lenkey was instrumental in creating an incentive program for contracted bus drivers. Drivers are now able to earn up to $2,400 extra a year with the program. In order to receive a bonus, drivers must meet certain criteria. Requirements include having a clean driving record, causing minimal wear and tear to school buses, complying to bus rules and regulations and following attendance policies. Lenkey will resign from his position effective March 17. The district is currently taking applications to fill the position.
Junior Women’s League hosts “Step Back in Thyme Tea” The GFWC Ohio Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s League will host a “Step Back in Thyme Tea” that will benefit Mahoning County Women And Children’s Shelters. The “Step Back in Thyme Tea” will take place at The Poland Presbyterian Church, located at 2 Poland Manor Dr. in Poland, on March 11 at 1 p.m. The cost is $20 per person. The tea includes lunch, special herbal teas, a basket auction and more. Ellen Speicher will present “English Gardens” - A pictorial visit to several spectacular gardens in England along with scenes from the world-famous Chelsea Flower Show. Students at Austintown Elementary School spread kindness throughout the halls to their fellow classmates and teachers Jan. 23-27. The Great Kindness Challenge is a nationwide campaign, but Austintown wanted to make it local and help influence the community. It is a grassroots movement that dedicates one week to creating a culture of kindness to campuses nationwide. On Jan. 27, the students brought in their spare change to donate to Making Kids Count. The AES students celebrated each day of the week in a different way. On Monday, students dressed in pajamas for Dream of Kindness. On Tuesday, students wore sports apparel for Team Kindness. On Wednesday, students wore a tie for Tied Together by Kindness. On Thursday, students dressed
like a hippie for Peace, Love and Kindness and on Friday, students brought in spare change to donate. “Kindness makes you a better person because kindness is sweet and it’s sharing and love,” said Scarlett Wells. “Kindness week is where you share kindness and give it to other people,” said student Addison Whitten. The students also enjoyed being able to dress up in different outfits each day of the week to celebrate a good cause. Several students said they enjoyed Tied Together by Kindness day and Peace, Love and Kindness day. “I can wear all this cool stuff, the ‘Kind is Cool’ bracelet and shirt. I gave a bracelet to Mrs. Patrick,” said student Enrique Martinez whose favorite day was Peace, Love and Kindness day. See KINDNESS, Page 4

The second annual Go Baby Go build took place at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, with six teams of students and professionals modifying ride-on cars for six children on Jan. 21. Go Baby Go is a program which provides modified ride-on cars for young children with disabilities. Dr. Cole Gallaway PT, PhD, an associate professor at the University of Delaware, founded this program. As there are only a few commercially available devices to promote mobility in young children, modified ride-on cars can facilitate a child’s independence at a much younger age, and at a relatively low cost. This nationally-known program is specifically for young children, 0-5 years of age, with mobility impairments. Children who have difficulty moving on their own may have an
underlying medical diagnosis including cerebral palsy, down syndrome or spina bifida. Every car is tailored to each child’s specific needs to improve and enhance a child’s independence and provide a way for that child to explore and play. Volunteers from Mahoning County Career and Technical Center and Youngstown State University PT Program, as well as local electricians and teachers, worked in conjunction with Oh Wow Children’s Center and Mahoning County ESC to modify a small “fleet of cars” so Valley children could benefit. Past research has shown this kind of opportunity for independent mobility is linked to cognitive, social, motor and language development. Workshop leaders included Natalie Wardega of RePlay for Kids, electrician Mark Guerino, Walter Baber of MCCTC engineering, engineer Angelo
LeMarca and Bev Lankitus of Mahoning County ESC. Therapists included, Carolyn Wyand, OT, Kathy O’Shaughnessy, PT, Patty Chongolola, OT, Gina D’Apolito, PT, Brenda Devenport, PT, Christine Sandor, PTA and Diane Kluchar, OT. The workshop leaders and therapists were assigned to the children’s teams, including Team Lily, Team Bella, Team Matthew, Team Paxton, Team London and Team Guiliana. The girls received “Frozen” themed cars, while the boys received “Minion” themed cars. Matthew’s mother, Patty, was grateful to be included in the program. “Bev Lankitus is Matthew’s therapist, and she told us about Go Baby Go. He was supposed to be involved last year, but got sick, so I am so happy to be here this year. We waited a year and weren’t going to miss it this time. It’s a wonderful thing,” Patty said.

Beth Smith and Mary Ann Whitcher, interns at the Oh Wow Children’s Center and students at Brown Mackie Akron, were excited to be part of the program. “It is a very cool program. The mobility of the modified car provides the children the opportunity to explore their environment and improve their social interaction,” Smith said.
“This type of non-traditional program gives the community a chance to volunteer and give back and help the children. It’s a unique aspect that you really don’t hear about too often,” Whitcher said. An “obstacle course” was set up for the children to drive through once their cars were competed and each child was gifted the car to take home.

Since its founding in 1901 by social activist Mary Harriman, The Junior League has evolved into one of the oldest, largest and most effective women’s volunteer organizations in the world. Long before some famous women became world renown for their position in life, they were members of the Junior League. These women included Eleanor Roosevelt, Shirley Temple and Sandra Day O’Connor. The Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) is now 160,000-plus members strong with 291 Leagues in four countries. In continuing that long tradition, the Junior League of Youngstown is hosting a meet and greet event on Feb. 23 at 5:30 p.m. One Hot Cookie in Boardman will be hosting the event. One of St. Christine School’s teachers received a special surprise on Jan. 26 from her students, WFMJ and Dunkin’ Donuts. Kindergarten teacher Amy Savich received the Dunkin’ Donuts Class Act award from WFMJ and Dunkin’ Donuts after student Brynn Cappelli and her grandmother wrote a nomination letter for her. Savich has been teaching kindergarten for 18 years and is the only grade she has ever taught. Savich and her students were returning back to their class-
room after attending an assembly in the gymnasium. Savich was unaware of the situation and what was about to happen until some of her students noticed there was a GoPro camera set up in the classroom. She then knew something was going to happen, but had no idea what it was going to be. “It was a nice surprise,” said Savich. Savich said she really enjoys teaching students in kindergarten. She does what she can to encourage them to want to come to school and be ready to learn when they get there. “This is their first experience at school so it’s my job to get
them to want to stay in school and continue their education all the way through and be excited about being here,” said Savich. Several students have been impacted by Savich during her 18 years of teaching and it only took a nomination from a student to get her recognition she deserves. “Because she’s special,” said Cappelli of why she nominated Savich. Savich has a special bond with her students and is very appreciative she won an award showcasing how much she is dedicated to her students and teaching.

Students pedaled their way into the Growing Place on Jan. 30 and 31 for the annual St. Jude Trike-A-Thon. The Growing Place has been
hosting a Trike-A-Thon since May 2000. Currently the Growing Place has collected $39,657 to donate to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The Trike-ATon is hosted once a year, over a two-day span so all of the chil-
dren in the Growing Place can participate in it. The children are sent home with a list of sponsors who they will be riding their bikes for. Before the children begin riding their bikes, they watch a video from St. Jude about bike safety. “It’s something for the kids to enjoy,” said Debbie Daus, director of the Growing Place. Previous Growing Place director, Wendy Avery, has experience with St. Jude making the Trike-A-Thon special and personal to the Growing Place. St. Jude invited Avery to visit
their facility in Tennessee to see exactly what St. Jude was about. Just six months after the trip, Avery’s song was diagnosed with Acute Myeloud Leukemia and the Avery’s made their way back to St. Jude, but this time as a patient family. The St. Jude Trike-A-Thon is special to the Growing Place so it’s something the child care center looks forward to every year. Jackson Berni, current second-grader and former Growing Place student, came up with the idea to sell baked goods as
an extra way to raise money for St. Jude. Jackson, his mom, Pam, and his two grandmothers spend a lot of time baking for the guests at the Trike-A-Thon. This is the second year Jackson has sold baked goods and raised more than $100 last year. “It’s a special moment for us together and it’s a great way for them to learn about thinking of others and giving to others,” said Pam Berni. Happily Ever After Mr., Mrs. Cap celebrate 50th anniversary CANFIELD
George P. and Nancy Cap marked their 50th anniversary June 4. Their children are Michael Cap of Henderson, Nev.; Michele (Cap) Laws of Mooresville, N.C.; and Kelly Cap of Pinehurst, N.C. They also have a granddaughter, Sarah. The former Nancy Holecko and Mr. Cap were married June 4, 1966, at Sacred Heart Church in Youngstown, where they are members. M r s. Cap w a s a se c ret a r y for Youngstown City Schools and retired July 1, 2007. She also worked part time at St. Charles Borromeo Church rectory for seven years. Mr. Cap worked as a tool maker for stown for 25 years. He retired Jan. 1, Sheet and Tube in Campbell for 19 2007. He served in the U.S. Marine years and for General Motors in Lord- Corps from 1957 to 1959.

Alison Marie Catanzarite and James Kozlow were married Oct. 22 at Old St. Patrick Church. The Rev. Thomas Hurley officiated the 5 p.m. ceremony, and a reception followed at Newberry Library. The parents of the bride are James and Rita Nolting of Frankfurt, Ill. The parents of the groom are Dr. James and Janet Kozlow of Poland. The bride wore a scoop-back gown with cap sleeves. Christina Ireland was the honor attendant. Catherine Howley, Fallon O’Connor, Rachel Murphy, Solmaz Rahmani, Hillary Flynn, Amy Feinkind and Alyssa Kozlow, sister of the groom, were bridesmaids. Addison Nolting, niece of the bride, was the flower girl. The attendants wore cabernet-colored lace dresses. The best man was Donald Pipino, and the groomsmen were Matthew Ramsbottom, Dominic Marchionda, Michael Rich, DJ Farrell, Matthew Michael, William Lee and Dan Polkovitch, a cousin of the groom. A cousin of the groom, Griffin Harman, was the ring bearer.
Mrs. Kozlow graduated from Indiana University with a bachelor’s degree in communications. She is an account manager for LinkedIn in Chicago. Mr. Kozlow graduated from Miami University with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering. He is pursuing a master’s degree in business at Duke University. The couple traveled to Belize for their wedding trip and reside in Durham, N.C.

The bride-elect is the daughter of Bob Ula and Joann and Ron Russo, all of Poland. The prospective groom is the son of Amy Keller of Poland and Paul and Shalynn Keller of Canfield.
