T he I naug u ra l Ca rd i na l Chili Cook-off took place in the Canfield High School cafeteria on Jan. 6. Twenty-two local restaurants, businesses, clubs a nd indiv idua ls a nd groups participated and entered their chili in the contest. There were three categories for judging: hot and spicy, thick and hearty and unconventional. A people’s choice award was also voted on by all attendees. A cash prize of $20 and medals were awarded to the winner of each category. Chili Cook-off entrants included John Ihnat, Cardinal Joint Fire District, C.H. The judges named Cocca’s Pizza as the winner of the Thick and Hearty category, Alex Geordan as winner of the Hot and Spicy category and the CHS cafeteria ladies as winner of the Unconventional category. Attendees voted Lions Club/ Phil Bova the People’s Choice winner. The menu included all-youcan-eat chili, bread, dessert and beverage. Cocca’s Pizza donated bread sticks, Kim’s Confections donated desserts, Canfield PTO donated bottled water and the CHS cafeteria provided corn bread. Canfield Local School Superintendent A lex Geordan brought the idea of a chili cookoff from a former school district and said it was meant to serve as a community event. “I first experienced this event
when I worked in the Ashtabula School District. I thought it was a great idea and wanted to bring it to Canfield. With the help of the Communications Committee, we decided this was the year to do it. We wanted the community to come in, sit down, enjoy some chili and see friends. It is all about community engagement. We have our school families here, and we wanted community members who usually don‘t come into our schools to come out and have a good time,” Geordan said. The event was planned to coincide with the CHS boys basketball game versus Lakeside. “We wanted to tie the chili cook-off to an event already going on at the school, so we planned it to be held prior to the varsity basketball game. We wanted to give the communit y t he opportunit y to come out to enjoy some chili and then go to the basketball game,” Geordan said. Geordan said several com-
munity members attending the chili cook-off requested tours of the high school. “Several community members asked for tours of the high school so they could see what it looks like now as compared to when they attended the school or last visited the school. We hadn’t thought of that, but we will make a point of offering tours during future events,” Geordan said. According to Geordan, the school district will make this an annual event. “We want to ma ke this a Canfield tradition. We plan on expanding it and making this an annual event,” Geordan said. Several student groups were also involved, with the students helping to set up, serving chili to the judges and helping with clean up. “The best thing about this event is the school system, the community, local businesses and students were all involved. You can’t beat that,” Geordan said.

For the 20th year, C.H. Campbell Elementary School kicked off its annual American Heart Association Jump Rope for Heart campaign with a highenergy, music-filled assembly on Jan. 27. Fourth-grade students, dressed in Canfield Cardinal red and black, put on a jump rope show for their fellow students. Ronie Haurin, C.H. Campbell physical education instructor, readied the students for their performance. The students have been working on their jump rope skills since kindergarten. To start their performance, the fourth-graders entered the gym to Van Halen’s “Jump” while running and jumping rope. After a brief introduction and a jump rope for heart cheer, the fourth-grade students dazzled the crowd with their jump rope skills. The students performed individually and in groups to the cheers of their fellow students. Some stunts the students executed were bouncing and passing a basketball to jumping students, jumping on one foot, speed jumping, synchronized jumping, double dutch, crouching to the floor, solo jumping, duo jumping, twirling while jumping, ‘push

To end the assembly, the students were shown a video explaining what the Jump Rope for Heart program is all about, and included the personal stories of families who have been helped by the program. The school’s Jump Rope for Heart campaign raises money for the American Heart Association, which funds lifesaving heart and stroke research and community and educational programs for youth. Last year, C.H. Campbell students raised more t han $10,000. Jump Rope For Heart teaches
students how physical fitness benefits the heart and shows that volunteering can be a fun and positive experience for the entire community. The Jump Rope for Heart campaign is under the direction of Haurin, and the students will jump rope during their scheduled gym class. Students will collect donations for their jumping and turn them in during the week, earning prizes along the way. Jump Rope For Heart is cosponsored by the American Hea rt Association a nd t he American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

Go Baby Go build takes place at MCCTC By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com
The second annual Go Baby Go build took place at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, with six teams of students and professionals modifying ride-on cars for six children on Jan. 21. Go Baby Go is a program which provides modified ride-on cars for young children with disabilities. Dr. Cole Gallaway PT, PhD, an associate professor at the University of Delaware, founded this program. As there are only a few commercially available devices to promote mobility in young children, modified ride-on cars can facilitate a child’s independence at a much younger age, and at a relatively low cost. This nationally-known program is specifically for young children, 0-5 years of age, with mobility impairments. Children who have difficulty moving on their own may have an underlying medical diagnosis including cerebral palsy, down syndrome or spina bifida. Every car is tailored to each child’s specific needs to improve and enhance a child’s independence and provide a way for that child to explore and play.
Volunteers from Mahoning County Career and Technical Center and Youngstown State University PT Program, as well as local electricians and teachers, worked in conjunction with Oh Wow Children’s Center and Mahoning County ESC to modify a small “fleet of cars” so Valley children could benefit. Past research has shown this kind of opportunity for independent mobility is linked to cognitive, social, motor and language development. Workshop leaders included Natalie Wardega of RePlay for Kids, electrician Mark Guerino, Walter Baber of MCCTC engineering, engineer Angelo LeMarca and Bev Lankitus of Mahoning County ESC. Therapists included, Carolyn Wyand, OT, Kathy O’Shaughnessy, PT, Patty Chongolola, OT, Gina D’Apolito, PT, Brenda Devenport, PT, Christine Sandor, PTA and Diane Kluchar, OT. The workshop leaders and therapists were assigned to the children’s teams, including Team Lily, Team Bella, Team Matthew, Team Paxton, Team London and Team Guiliana. The girls received “Frozen” themed cars, while the boys received “Minion” themed
cars. Matthew’s mother, Patty, was grateful to be included in the program. “Bev Lankitus is Matthew’s therapist, and she told us about Go Baby Go. He was supposed to be involved last year, but got sick, so I am so happy to be here this year. We waited a year and weren’t going to miss it this time. It’s a wonderful thing,” Patty said. Beth Smith and Mary Ann Whitcher, interns at the Oh Wow Children’s Center and students at Brown Mackie Akron, were excited to be part of the program. “It is a very cool program. The mobility of the modified car provides the children the opportunity to explore their environment and improve their social interaction,” Smith said. “This type of non-traditional program gives the community a chance to volunteer and give back and help the children. It’s a unique aspect that you really don’t hear about too often,” Whitcher said. An “obstacle course” was set up for the children to drive through once their cars were competed and each child was gifted the car to take home.

CHS performs at Solo and Ensemble event On Jan. 28, 56 members of the Canfield High School band program participated in 61 events at the annual Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) District 5 Solo and Ensemble Adjudicated Event. This year’s event took place at Warren G. Harding High School. Teacher receives award for dedication By ALEXIS BARTOLOMUCCI abartolomucci@vindy.com
One of St. Christine School’s teachers received a special surprise on Jan. 26 from her students, WFMJ and Dunkin’ Donuts. Kindergarten teacher Amy Savich received the Dunkin’ Donuts Class Act award from WFMJ and Dunkin’ Donuts after student Brynn Cappelli and her grandmother wrote a nomination letter for her. Savich has been teaching kindergarten for 18 years and is the only grade she has ever taught. Sav ich and her students were returning back to their classroom after attending an assembly in the gymnasium. Savich was unaware of the situation and what was about to happen until some of her students noticed there was a GoPro camera set up in the classroom. She then knew something was going to happen, but had no idea what it was going to be. “It was a nice surprise,” said Savich. Savich said she really enjoys teaching students in kindergarten. She does what she can to encourage them to want to come to school and be ready to

Several students have been impacted by Savich during her 18 years of teaching and it only took a nomination from a stu-

She was a three-time first team All-District selection, three-time All-AAC first team, two-time AAC Player of the Year (2015-16) and Vindicator female “Player of the Year” (2016). Mancini will attend the University of Toledo to major in nursing while continuing her soccer career as a Rocket. A 3.97 GPA student, she is the daughter of Frank and Lori Mancini. Canfield High School Athletic Director Greg Cooper welcomed Mancini’s friends, classmates, teammates and family members to the signing. “Welcome and thank you for coming to recognize Anita today. Student athletes distinguish themselves as athletes, but more importantly as students. Anita has excelled both on and off the field here at Canfield High School. Congratulations, Anita, on your accomplishments and your selection of University of Toledo to continue your athletic career,” Cooper said. Cooper then introduced Canfield High School girls soccer head coach Phil Simone. “Thank you for coming and celebrating with Anita and her family. Congratulations to Ani-

ta and congratulations to Frank and Lori on doing a phenomenal job in raising Anita. It was a special treat to coach her. I have worked with her on and off since she was 11. As some of you may know, we didn’t always see eye to eye, but she is definitely one of those players you always wanted in your program. In the last two years, she has been responsible for 90 percent of our scoring. She scored in all 18 matches this year. With her persistence, attitude, leadership skills and work ethic, I know she will succeed at the next level and I look forward to following her career at the University of Toledo,” Simone said. Cooper then opened the floor to Mancini. “Thank you for coming. I am happy to see all of you. First, I would like to thank Simone for running such a wonderful program. I would also like to thank my friends and teammates who always pushed me and supported me. And thank you to my family. I wouldn’t be here without them. My dad and Coach Bill shaped me into who

Family story time Bring the whole family to the Canfield library on Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. for stories, games, crafts and fun for all ages.
Bonding with babies and books and signs, oh my! Come to the Canfield library on Feb. 23 at 10 a.m. and learn how to use American Sign Language (ASL) with your child through rhymes, Neighbors | Submitted
Since its founding in 1901 by social activist Mary Harriman, The Junior League has evolved into one of the oldest, largest and most effective women’s volunteer organizations in the world. Long before some famous women became world renown for their position in life, they were members of the Junior League. These women included Eleanor Roosevelt, Shirley Temple and Sandra Day O’Connor. The Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) is now 160,000-plus members strong with 291 Leagues in four countries. In continuing that long tradition, the Junior League of Youngstown is hosting a meet and greet event on Feb. 23 at 5:30 p.m. One Hot Cookie in Boardman will be hosting the event. Interested women from the Mahoning Valley are invited to meet local members and to learn more about the league’s impact in the community. The Junior League of Youngstown empowers its members to build upon their skills and utilize them in other significant leadership roles within the community. As a member of The Junior League, you will have limitless opportunities with unique volunteer experiences, new friendships and a path to improve personal and professional skills. If you are interested in becoming a new member for the 2017-2018 League year, attending the event, or you would like more information about the Junior League of Youngstown, contact the League office at 330-743-3200 or visit www.jlyoungstown.org.

The Davis Family YMCA is hosting its fourth annual FIVE Squared benefit art show and sale from Feb. 5 until March 5 at the McClurg Road facility. More than 450 pieces of 5 inch art from eight countries and eight states will be up for purchase at $25 each or five for $100 (youth art is $10, six for $50). Art is sold on a first come, first served basis. Bidding for the silent auction will be in place until 5 p.m. on Feb. 19. All proceeds from the sale and silent auction provide art classes to under-served children, teens and families at the Rescue Mission, Daybreak, YCS and others.
