Market Street Elementar y School invited parents and students to the school on the night of Feb. 8 to show the parents what their children learn in their language arts classes. The school began the event three years ago to help parents better understand what the students do during the school day and to learn how to help their children in language arts. Reading Center teacher Julie Kamenitsa led and organized the event. They split the parents into two groups, one for parents of children in kindergarten and first grade and another for the parents of children in grades second, third and forth. They made this distinction because the higher grade levels work on concepts that the younger students would not understand as well. Both groups rotated between five stations. Some of the stations were the same between the two groups. They both had a word work station that focused on vocabulary, a writer’s workshop to improve the students’ writing skills and a guided reading
station designed to increase the students’ reading abilities. Both groups also had a technolog y related station. The kindergarten and first-grade parents got to use the Chromeb o ok s t h a t s t u d e nt s u s e throughout the school. The other group met in the school’s technology room, where they showed the parents some of the skills they have learned there. The other station for the kindergarten and first-grade families was a story time featuring a guest speaker, Alex George of WKBN. The other families had a test preparation station that got families and students ready for the standardized testing that begins in thirdgrade. The school had the school’s Scholastic Book Fair in the gym during the night. The book fair lasted all week, but the night provided students with a good opportunity to talk to their parents about the books they wanted. Jennifer Eynon, the chairperson for the book fair, set up two preview days and three days of purchase for the students. The money raised during the book fair will be spent on

books and materials for the school library and the teacher’s individual class libraries. They also plan to buy a book for each student at the end of the school year for them to read over summer. The school also gave snacks and water to the attendees. The families could also register to vote in the school’s cafeteria. The Boardman library set up an area in the cafeteria to sign
up for a library card. They had merchandise from YSU, which sponsored the event. Market Street Elementar y has had their Literacy Night for three years, but this year will be the first year that the other elementary schools will have their own Literacy Nights. In addition to the Literacy Night, Ma rket St reet E lementa r y plans to do a math night later in the school year.

The Boardman Schools Fund for Educational Excellence provided funding for eight new projects throughout the school system on Jan. 3. The Boardman Education Association helped garner the funds for these projects, which totaled to $8,465. Each project will give students a more indepth educational experience in many different subject fields. These projects will “impact the lives of a multitude of students,“ said Joyce Mistovich, President of Boardman Schools Fund for Educational Excellence. She explained that she wants the impact to be a lasting one, with these students using what they learn in the community as they grow older. The high school’s science department will receive a spectrophotometer for light analysis. The purchase will benefit approximately 600 students throughout chemistry, biology and physics classes. Teachers Justine Burkey and Chad DeAngelo lead the project to get the technology. Allison Herman at Boardman Glenwood Junior High School acquired funding for her grant,

Boardman Quiz Bowl team on winning streak Neighbors | Submitted
Boardman’s Quiz Bowl team is on a 54match win streak. They are the undefeated champs of the Mahoning League for the last three years. The team’s captain, Pranav Padmanabhan, has been the league’s “Player of the Year” for the past two years. On Feb. 24, Boardman will host the daylong Mahoning League Championship at Boardman High School. The Mahoning League has expanded to 26 teams this year, representing school districts from Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana Counties. Students must answer academic-based questions ranging from literature, science, math and history to pop culture. Last year, Boardman’s team was ranked among the 250 best teams in the nation.
Jazz ensemble plays at OMEA conference Neighbors | Submitted
The Boardman’s top jazz ensemble played under the direction of Thomas Ruggieri at the Ohio Music Education Association Professional Development Conference on Feb. 8. The ensemble was one of six jazz bands that the group selected to play. OMEA selected 40 bands of 130 jazz, wind and choir groups from the middle school, high school and college levels. Ruggieri has had three ensembles over his 19 years of teaching at Boardman perform at the event.

give them a safer alternative for strength training. Siembida explained that the name stands for “Physically Overcoming While Encouraging Responsibilities.” She said that the students support each other in making the right choices. They have a fitness plan for the students that to help them learn healthy choices that they can continue throughout their lives. The Boardman Schools Television Network replaced their old teleprompter with the funding. The new equipment uses software instead of wireless internet, so they can always use the equipment. The teleprompter is also more than twice the size of the former one. The BSTN students will use the technology as well as students involved with the Speech team. Chris Clones and Amy Radinovic brought the project forward. West Boulevard teachers Dan Kibby, Krista Schmied, Dawn
Fleming and Jennifer Bennet received a number of nonfiction books and STEM stations for their kindergarten students. The books will help the teachers meet science standards. The stations and learning centers include equipment for hands-on learning, which will help students learn at their own pace. The high school’s art department will get a Cricut machine. The machine works like a printer and can cut multiple surfaces. The students design a project using digital software and the Cricut can cut that design. The art teachers Alyssa Birch, Amanada Bero and Kate Burnside want to introduce the equipment to their students who may look to
buy a Cricut and continue their artistic endeavors. Third- a nd four t h-g rade teachers at Market Street Elementary School will receive guided reading books. Tara Alberti, Kendra Baltes, Lisa Ebie and Laurel Sanders headed the project. The books span multiple genres of both fiction and nonfiction for children to read independently at their reading level. The Boardman Schools Fund for Educational Excellence began in 2009 and started to award grants in 2011. They support projects involving all Boardman Local Schools and each grade level from kindergarten to twelfth grade.

Suzie’s Dogs and Drafts kicks off a Pay-it-Forward
Inspired by the life lived by a former colleague; Suzie’s Dogs & Drafts is hoping to pay tribute by taking action. Hosted in cooperation with the Rescue Mission of Mahoning Valley, Suzie’s customers can donate a hot dog for the hungry and write a note of support. T hei r don at ion w i l l b e matched dog-for-dog by Suzie’s. Then on the second Wednesday of every month this year, Suzie’s employees will provide a meal for the overnight residents and meal visitors at the Mission’s downtown Youngstown facility. The goal is food for the body and encouragement for the spirit. The project is inspired by the untimely passing late last November of Colin Brown. Brown worked in the restaurant industry, managing newly opened restaurants and helping get them off the ground. He was a volunteer with the Common Wealth Kitchen Incubator in Youngstown, was known for his pay it forward attitude and always helping those in need. “Colin always was willing to support someone when they were down,” said Suzie’s CEO Christian Rinehart. He and Brown started their careers together as coworkers at Jillian’s in the late 1990s. “I hope that sharing his example will inspire others. “This is just fantastic. Colin is up there smiling because he would love this,” said April Brown, Colin’s sister, describing her brother as a very giving person who loved to put a smile on everyone’s face. “If this project can accomplish even a fraction of (the work) he would do, he would be so proud.” In the last few years, charitable dining has been quietly building momentum around the world in the form of paywhat-you-wa nt ca fes a nd buy-one give-one models often launched by millennial entrepreneurs. The concept is simple: feed someone in need at the same time you feed yourself. In Canada, a broader network has led to a nonprofit made up of more than 200 restaurants that are collaborating to donate meals to the hungry. “Here in the Valley we are in

need of long-term solutions to hunger and poverty,” said Rinehart, noting the Youngstown Metropolitan Area has an overall poverty rate of 17.2 percent and the poverty rate for is 50 percent compared to the national average of 21 percent. “In the meantime, however, there are people on our streets that struggle to eat on a daily basis. This is our way to help them.” Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley, currently celebrating their 125th year in The Valley, can attest to the need to feed the hungry in our community. Daily, more than 300 meals are served to anyone in need, no questions asked, often through community projects like this one.
“The Mission has been supported by our neighbors since the doors were opened,” said Lynn Wyant, vice president of development at the Mission. One way this happens is with the Mission’s “Take Out Team” program where restaurants agree to cater (or even just provide ingredients) for a lunch or dinner meal once a month or quarter. “Having Suzie’s join in this effort is a blessing.” For more information about this pay-it-forward campaign or Suzie’s Dogs & Drafts, contact Christian Rinehart at 440-3395931. Top Flite Financial donated coats to Boardman elementary school students on Jan. 4 at Stadium Drive Elementary School. The company collected 51 coats between the end of November and the end of December. The coats will be distributed to elementary students in all four elementary schools. Michael Zoccali, Stadium Drive Elementary’s principal, and Jennifer Carey, a school counselor at Stadium Drive Elementary and Market Street Elementary, met branch manager Ryan Cuffle and other representatives from the mortgage company. Cuf f le a nd Zocca li have teamed up for this event for three years now, one while Zoccali was an assistant principal at Austintown schools and the last two years with Boardman schools. Zoccali explained that the
students have to get in and out of the school in the cold weather, but also have to endure the cold during recess outside. He said that the effect goes beyond school, because the students need the coats on the weekends and after school. Both he and Carey said they are thankful for the coats to help the students. They both continued to say that the deed helps the families who are struggling by supplying the students with coats, so they have one less expense to worry about. Carey said any family in need of a coat can contact her throughout the school year. “And, as an educator, I hope that when a student gets a coat, they learn the importance of giving,“ said Zoccali. Top Flight Financial acquired the coats from business partners throughout the community. They set up a raffle where each donated coat led to a chance to win tickets to see the Cavaliers play.

Neighbors wants winter sports news The snowy season is here, winter athletics have arrived and Neighbors wants to be there every step of the way. If you’re a sports coach or the parent of an athlete, we need your help. In order to get teams and players the recognition they deserve, we want to showcase them in our pages. We can only do that if you commit to sending us game reports and photos each week. If you send it, it will get in. You can email us at neighbors@vindy.com. You don’t have to be a writer — just send us the information and we’ll put it all together. When emailing pictures, send them as JPEG files and as large as possible. Provide caption information and where people are located from left to right, front row to back. The sports news we’re looking for ranges from varsity high school teams down to middle school and even elementary and recreational leagues. We look forward to hearing about your teams successes.
