CHC kindergarten project aims to further student reading The C.H. Campbell kindergarten team is seeking to purchase books for use in guided reading. Funding for this project will allow them to enhance students’ reading instruction. These books would directly impact 90 kindergarten students annually. CHC kindergartners participate in guided reading, which takes place when teachers meet with students in small groups. Guided reading refers to the grade level expectations that are categorized in books from levels A to Z. For example, kindergarten starts at level A and ends at D. However, because children prog-

ress at different rates, some excel beyond the grade level range. Guided reading “enables children to practice strategies with the teacher’s support.” Guided reading allows them to ensure student success and growth as readers. Students who move through the grade levels will have a stronger foundation as a result of their kindergarten experience. This fundraising project will run until May 26. So far, they have had 20 donors and are halfway to their goal. They are seeking community support to reach it. You can find their page by going to www.

donorschoose.org and searching Cardinals Are Flying Into Guided Reading, by searching Canfield projects, or by visiting the following link: https:// www.donorschoose.org/project/cardinals-are-flying-intoguided-reading/3029384/?utm_ s o u r c e = d c & u t m _ medium=page&utm_ c a m p a i g n = p r oj e c t & u t m _ erm=teacher_3642813&rf=pagedc-2018-02-project642813&challengeid=20781626. Canfield Presbyterian to host silent auction By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

The Canfield Presbyterian Church is hosting Celebration of Gifts Event: Silent Auction and Chili Cook-Off on Feb. 25. The Celebration of Gifts Silent Auction will take place from 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m., with the Chili Cook-Off scheduled from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Proceeds from the event will benefit the church’s 2018 International Mission Trip with Foundation for Peace to Dominican Republic and Haiti. Seventeen youth and adult members of the church are participating in the trip scheduled for July 1120. With more than 70 auction items available to bid on, all are made by church members of friends of church members. Auction items include Christmas tree decorating, pies, photographs, wood signs, guitar and ukulele lessons, lap quilts, cookies, wooden nativity wall art, yard work, moving help, paintings, babysitting, house cleaning, gutter cleaning, crocheted dolls, custom calligraphy, cheesecake, oil change, horseback riding lesson, duck decoy, handmade cards, jewelry, bread, golf outing and voice lessons. “It’s amazing to see the generosity of folks to donate what they have. I’m just blown away by getting more than 70 items donated for the silent auction. We get to see how awesome this church is and what amazing skills our members have, as pretty much everything is made by our members. We are hoping the event is joyfully competitive,” said Rebecca Mattern,

Canfield Presbyterian Church Director of Christian Education. Bidding is open Saturday from 10-11:30 a.m. The Chili Cook-Off is an annual event hosted at the church and is being tied into the silent auction this year. “We wanted to tie it into the silent auction this year, so we can feed everyone and have fellowship through both events,” Mattern said. Tickets for the Chili Cook-Off are $7 and can be purchased at the door. Members of the mission trip team will visit Pendernales, D.R. and Haiti, the same area another mission trip group from the church visited in 2013. “The church sent a group to Pendernales five years ago, and we are going to the same area. While there, we will work on the same school that group did, we will offer vacation bible school, host a medical clinic and work on a Haiti agricultural project. Three people from this year’s group went five years ago, and they will get to see some of the people from their first trip and reconnect with them. It’s going to be really neat for them to be able to see them again,” Mattern said. For more information, and for the complete listing of items, visit canfieldpc.org/auctionandchili. Wrestling team honored with traditional walk-through By ABBY SLANKER neighbors@vindy.com

In keeping with the Canfield High School tradition to honor athletes and teams which have earned the right to compete at the state level, the school had a walk-through for the wrestling team on Feb. 9. The wrestling team, coached by Steve Pitts, earned a trip to

the sixth annual OHSAA State Wrestling Dual Team Tournament at St. John Arena at The Ohio State University on Feb. 11. Prior to the walk through, CHS Principal Michael Moldovan addressed the student body. “Today we continue with the Canfield High School tradition of honoring our athletes who

have reached a state competition with a walk-through. We are happy today to recognize our wrestling team. I do believe this is the first time our wrestling team has qualified for the state competition. We are very proud of them. This is a tremendous accomplishment for the young men who will be competing at the state level. There are more good things to

come from these young men. So step out of your classrooms and show them your support,” Moldovan said. As the wrestling team walked through the school, the wrestlers were honored by and wished good luck by their classmates, faculty, staff and family members, while also joined by Big Red, the Canfield High School mascot.

St. Christine School placed their classroom materials from the displaced classes in the gymnasium. The Cardinal Mooney and Ursuline students moved the materials into other rooms to get classes ready for school.

Rivals come together to help St. Christine School By ZACK SHIVELY zshively@vindy.com

St. Christine School reopened on Jan. 25 with the help of students from Cardinal Mooney and Ursuline high schools. The kindergarten through eighth-grade school closed shortly after the new year due to a roofing issues, which led to a water leak and an asbestos problem. The school brought in Daniel A. Terreri and Sons to remove the asbestos, Boak and Sons to repair the roof and Valley Acoustics to make repairs on the school. The school passed an air quality test that allowed them to reopen. “We couldn’t take a chance on asbestos falling,“ said Walter Carpenter, principal of the school, “You have to think of the safety of the children, staff and parents.“ However, the leak and asbestos removal led to the displacement of classrooms. Many of the school’s resources and materials were placed in the gym during

the cleanup. Cardinal Mooney and Ursuline high schools sent students to the school on Jan. 24 to help get the school ready for classes the next day. “It’s nice that we have two schools that are fierce competitors and are helping out,“ Carpenter said. He continued to say that seeing the two schools come together to help them is special. The problem caused four classrooms to be displaced and closed off a hallway. The students helped rearrange rooms to help become classrooms. For example, they changed a meeting room into a room for classes. The only class that remains without a classroom after the rearrangement is music education, which will be meeting in the gym until the repairs are finished. The students from Ursuline and Cardinal Mooney had gone to St. Christine’s in the past. Mark Vollmer, principal of Cardinal Mooney, said that he called down senior students that had

previously gone to St. Christine to ask if they wanted to help out. “We wanted to help out in any way we could,“ said Vollmer, who helped alongside his students. He offered to place some classrooms at Cardinal Mooney if the school could not reopen this year. He said he appreciates
